Bob hit the road again last night, starting his west coast swing. The setlist didn’t change, the presentation of a few songs apparently did: subscribers to Flagging Down the Double E’s got details in an email today.

The good news is the the iPhone Hostage Program did not stop the tapers: a copy of the show is already being shared at Expecting Rain.

During the recording sessions that produced Shadow Kingdom we know that Dylan recorded a lot more than we got in the streaming show. At least one song was Blowin’ In The Wind, and that recording is being used as a ‘exclusive’ for T-Bone Burnett’s new Ionic recording venture – with the only copy of the song being set for auction and expected to fetch $1M or more.

Many are upset about this, although it is unlikely we will not get to hear this recording. But let’s not let the promotion (which is in fact making news) take attention away from the fact that the company has developed the first big advance in records in decades and promises to make scratches and noisy records a thing of the past and deliver super high-fidelity to all existing turntables and stereo systems.

Sure the first ones are expensive – but the price will come down and the production capacity will ramp up. Competitors will get into the game. Vinyl has sonic advantages but some real disadvantages too. It’s doesn’t make sense to be unhappy about the promise of better sounding music. Bob is supporting this advanced by lending a song.

The Scott Warmuth episode of Man & God & Law linked below is an excellent intro to the world of Dylan’s late-period lyrics, and to one of our speakers for our June 11 live event. This episode is filled with interesting and wise commentary from both Scott and Steven Daniel Arnoff.
