This new page lists former entries in the Searching For A Gem list that have now been released since 1998 (when the site was set up) on currently available Dylan CDs in the USA. I've also listed the Dylan album releases that include the former rarities. A case has been made by correspondents that because record companies today like to remix and remaster old material, no rarity is ever now released in its exact original form. However, this page still enables visitors to identify previously hard-to-find performances.
I have been asked to include here items which were already included in Dylan albums when I started the site in 1997 but had been rarities on their original release. A good example is the live Rolling Thunder Revue performance of Isis released on the 1978 promo EP 4 Songs From "Renaldo And Clara", and again in 1984 as the B-side of Jokerman 7" singles - this ceased to be a rarity when it was released on Biograph in 1985. This is a good idea, but the current high level of submissions means it has been given low priority.

Witmark offices, New York, Jul 1962 This 10" acetate was made for Witmark by Liberty Records, Los Angeles, CA. The description of the performance sounds like the circulating Witmark demo from Jun 1962. The title is given as "It's Blowing In The Wind". R-0776 was included in the Deluxe Edition of Together Through Life, 2009 and was also released in Oct 2010 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964. A copy of this pre-Freewheelin' album of Witmark demos came up for auction in Dec 1992, when it fetched $1,000 (nowadays it would fetch around $15,000). These discs were created by Sound Makers Inc., 6 West 57th Street, New York, on behalf of Columbia Records for distribution to other artists who might record Dylan songs. |

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for finding the copy from Suze Rotolo's personal collection for auction at Christie's, New York, in Nov 2006. The album is housed in a buff paper sleeve with a sticker giving Albert Grossman's then postal address in New York. It has generic labels with typed title and tracklists. Thanks to Arie de Reus for further information, especially that it is a mono vinyl LP, not an acetate as previously reported, and for the label scans.

R-0291 Tomorrow Is A Long Time - Witmark demo, recorded Dec 1962, different from the version released on Greatest Hits Vol. 2/More Greatest Hits, 1971, which is a live performance from New York Town Hall, 12 Apr 1963. Bob later recorded a version at Columbia Studios, Nashville, TN, during the New Morning sessions, but that is still unreleased.

R-0293 Farewell Pamilina [Farewell] - Witmark demo, recorded Mar 1963 - this performance was short-listed for The Bootleg Series, Vols. 1-3, 1991
The last track is not a mistitled Farewell Angelina, this was actually the earliest title of the unreleased song called Farewell (see my "Starlight In The East" Directory of Bob Dylan's Unreleased Songs, page F - information from Tim Dunn). Bob recorded the song at Columbia Studios, New York, on 6 Aug 1963, during the Times They Are A-Changin' sessions, although the four takes are listed as incomplete.
All these tracks were officially released in mono in Oct 2010 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964, so have ceased to be rarities.

"MPHC" stands for “Music Publishers Holding Corporation,” of which Witmark was a part. Some sources give the date of this Witmark demo as Dec 1963, although the Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 version was recorded on Columbia Studios, New York, on 12 Aug 1963, which would place any publishing company demo somewhat earlier. R-0049 Positively 4th Street - alternate stereo
mix, slightly longer at 4:12 as opposed to 3:56 on regular track Carsten Baumann informs me that he's checked the version on this 1966 album (also on the 1965 Witmark tape, see 1965) against the version now included on the remastered Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits (US release), and they are the same. This means it replaces the single version which is now to be found on CD only on Biograph. (R-0049 is also on the non-US release The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2, see 2000). Thanks also to David Goldsmith for confirmation. The stereo version has therefore ceased to be a rarity, and the entry has now moved here and International Compilations: Various Artist Albums 1962-69. The mono version of R-0049, R-0049M, remains a rarity and is still listed for 1965 and 1966. These are all Witmark & Sons demos recorded in the Witmark offices,
New York, in 1962-63 except R-0037, which is an alternate Columbia studio take
from 1964 used as a demo. The record is single-sided so there is no label on Side 2. For

These four acetates on stock labels with handwritten text contain Bob Dylan songs
which were then unreleased and turned up in
2004. They are all single-sided. The
publisher is identified as "W-7 Music", which is Warner Bros/7 Arts, also
publisher of a 12" acetate LP that surfaced in 1967. My tentative identification of the performances

Bros/7 Arts acetate LP,
see 1967 The fifth acetate, not shown here, contains a studio performance of Bob Dylan's New Orleans Rag, not a Witmark demo, that can be found in 2004. This performance, Take 2 from Columbia Studios, New York, 24 Oct 1963, has now been released on the Columbia/Legacy Europe 6LP limited edition 50th Anniversary Collection 1963, Dec 2013. Also shown are photos of a strange acetate of another Witmark demo, Walkin' Down The Line (R-0539, see 1963 and above), with the same label and typewritten text as the others. However, it has Bob's name as "BOB ZIMMERMAN". This is strange because as far as I know Bob never used his real name after he came to New York in 1961, even before he changed it legally to "Dylan" in Aug 1962. Jeff Gold of Record Mecca was commissioned by Bob's business manager Jeff Rosen to appraise over 10,000 Dylan items at the Bob Dylan Archive at the University of Tulsa, OK, and did not find one with Bob's real name on! Tim Dunn says that not one of Bob's copyrights mentions the name "Zimmerman", not even the earliest Leeds/Duchess Music contracts, and Bob's contract with Witmark was in the name of "Bob Dylan". The Emidisc UK 14 track test pressing LP (two copies of which are shown with different text, one typewritten, one handwritten) is reputedly the source of the songs made available to UK groups such as Manfred Mann (The Mighty Quinn), The Brian Auger Trinity/Julie Driscoll (This Wheel's On Fire), Fairport Convention (Million Dollar Bash), etc. Apparently only about ten copies were pressed. John Bauldie describes this 14 track test pressing in detail in his article "The Basement Tapes" in "Record Collector", Jul 1987, but Hans Seegers disputes its legality. Hans says the songs were only legally distributed on tape, which is confirmed by Dean Chambers, who has information the songs were supplied to the music publishing company Feldmans in London on a 7" reel by Albert Grossman. However, several test pressings were indeed made from this tape for private distribution, and these were the source of the much poorer quality bootleg LPs that surfaced. The US test pressing from Arie de Reus has exactly the same track list and appears official.
Also shown are other Emidisc double-sided and single-sided test pressings for sale on eBay. ("Emidisc" was EMI's brand of recording blank, made at Hayes, Middlesex, which could be used by anyone in the recording industry - exactly like a CD-R today - and the name does not mean this recording was produced by EMI itself. I have other 1960s test pressings pressed using Emidisc blanks. Note these are not acetates, an acetate is single-sided with a metal back, usually aluminium, covered with a soft lacquer on which the recording is cut.) The single Emidisc test pressing of "I Shall Be Released" is of the track from The Basement Tapes sessions eventually released on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 in 1991, not the later version released on Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II in 1971. The title is misspelled "Realeased"! The three other single Emidisc test pressings are all of tracks from the UK LP and later released on The Basement Tapes in 1975. Gerd Rundel's copy of Please Mrs. Henry is blank on the reverse and comes in a grey card sleeve with blue edges. The Emidisc test pressing EP has two takes of Tears Of Rage plus Quinn The Eskimo on Side 1, with Quinn the Eskimo, Open The Door, Richard and "Nothing Is There" (Too Much Of Nothing or Nothing was Delivered?) on Side 2.

Bob re-recorded these five tracks at the last minute in Minnesota in Dec 1974 with local musicians, some say because he felt there was a little too much "blood on the tracks", others say it was because his brother David Zimmerman convinced him that all the tracks on the album sounded too similar. Ellen Bernstein may also have had a role in convincing Bob to change the album. All the previous rarities are now released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 - More Blood, More Tracks, Nov 2018, see below.

Thanks to Fred Muller for the following information about the Dylan content: "A series of stills of Dylan at Newport in 1965 (afternoon soundcheck with polka-dot shirt) is shown about halfway through the film, during an interview with Marshall Chess. The soundtrack has an excerpt of the live Newport recording of Maggie's Farm at that point. Immediately thereafter there's about 15 seconds of monochrome film of Dylan with the band members, presumably shortly after the show. It seems to be slowed down somewhat and Dylan holds a wine bottle to his left ear as the camera pans away from him." Thanks to Jack from Canada for scans.

However, Don Handy considers that the performance on this album is different from the performance from the EP 4 Songs From "Renaldo & Clara", which he suggests actually comes from The Forum, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975. Both Glen Dundas and Olof Bj�rner confirm the 20 Nov 1975 date on the EP, not 4 Dec 1975. This is the complete famous "Halloween Mask" concert at the New York Philharmonic Hall on 31 Oct 1964. We already knew that the concert had been recorded by Columbia, because six tracks from it surfaced on Columbia acetates in 1980 - one of them, Mama, You've Been On My Mind (R-0220), the live duet with Joan Baez, appeared on her Vanguard boxed set Rare, Live & Classic in 1993. while the complete take which follows it comes from 14 Jan 1965 (take 2, on CD2,
track 4). R-0053 is therefore also released as CD2, track 4! R-0053 will still remain a rarity, because of the limited availability of
this massive set.

on this set in their original form, so remain rarities. Confirmation that the 6CD Deluxe Edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 - More Blood, More Tracks is a Strictly Limited Edition means that other previous rarities including tracks from the Blood On The Tracks test pressing, the alternate take of Shelter From The Storm from the Jerry Maguire soundtrack album, and the alternate take of Meet Me In The Morning from the 2012 Duquesne Whistle single remain rarities. This entry has been kept here for information.
