This new page lists former entries in the Searching For A Gem list that have now been released since 1998 (when the site was set up) on currently available Dylan CDs in the USA. I've also listed the Dylan album releases that include the former rarities. A case has been made by correspondents that because record companies today like to remix and remaster old material, no rarity is ever now released in its exact original form. However, this page still enables visitors to identify previously hard-to-find performances.
I have been asked to include here items which were already included in Dylan albums when I started the site in 1997 but had been rarities on their original release. A good example is the live Rolling Thunder Revue performance of Isis released on the 1978 promo EP 4 Songs From "Renaldo And Clara", and again in 1984 as the B-side of Jokerman 7" singles - this ceased to be a rarity when it was released on Biograph in 1985. This is a good idea, but the current high level of submissions means it has been given low priority.
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Items Removed from the Searching For A Gem list
This list only includes items that have been removed completely from the Rarities list. Items with former rarities that still have other rarities are still listed!

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for finding the copy from Suze Rotolo's personal collection for auction at Christie's, New York, in Nov 2006. The album is housed in a buff paper sleeve with a sticker giving Albert Grossman's then postal address in New York. It has generic labels with typed title and tracklists. Thanks to Arie de Reus for further information, especially that it is a mono vinyl LP, not an acetate as previously reported, and for the label scans.

R-0029 Long Ago, Far Away - Witmark demo of this still unreleased song, recorded Nov 1962
R-0291 Tomorrow Is A Long Time - Witmark demo, recorded Dec 1962, different from the version released on Greatest Hits Vol. 2/More Greatest Hits, 1971, which is a live performance from New York Town Hall, 12 Apr 1963. R-0293 Farewell Pamilina [Farewell] - Witmark demo, recorded Mar 1963 - this performance was short-listed for The Bootleg Series, Vols. 1-3, 1991
The last track is not a mistitled Farewell Angelina, this was actually the earliest title of the unreleased song called Farewell (see my "Starlight In The East" Directory of Bob Dylan's Unreleased Songs, page F - information from Tim Dunn). Bob recorded the song at Columbia Studios, New York, on 6 Aug 1963, during the Times They Are A-Changin' sessions, although the four takes are listed as incomplete.
All these tracks were officially released in mono in Oct 2010 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964, so have ceased to be rarities.

Away - Witmark demo of this still unreleased song,
recorded Nov 1962 Now officially released in mono in Oct 2010 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964., so no longer a rarity. This single-sided acetate came in a plain sleeve, with a sheet containing the music and lyrics. Like the LP above and the two acetates below, this acetate was cut for promotion to other artists who might record Dylan songs. Long Ago, Far Away was subsequently recorded by The Brothers Four and Odetta, see my "Starlight In The East" Directory of Bob Dylan's Unreleased Songs, page L. R-0031 Ain't Gonna
Grieve - Witmark demo recorded Aug 1963 Now officially released in mono in Oct 2010 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964., so no longer a rarity. This acetate has a generic Columbia promo white label with typewritten title "Ain't Gonna Grieve No More" and handwritten "23591" in red. There is still no officially released recording of this song. This performance later appeared with eight other Witmark demos on a US Warner Bros/7 Arts Music 12" singled-sided acetate LP in 1967. It also surfaced in a set of US Music Publishers Holding Corporation acetates, see 2004. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scan. |

"Paths Of Victory" - 8" acetate of Witmark demo, MPHC Reference Recording (no catalogue number) (USA), recorded 1963, offered for sale by auction, Dec 1992:
Picture from "Isis" 46, Dec 1992/Jan 1993 |
R-0465 Paths Of Victory - Witmark demo (different from
version released in 1991 on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3, see
International Album Releases) This is no longer a rarity because it was released officially in 2010 on the Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music set The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964. "MPHC" stands for “Music Publishers Holding Corporation,” of which Witmark was a part. Some sources give the date of this Witmark demo as Dec 1963, although the Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 version was recorded on Columbia Studios, New York, on 12 Aug 1963, which would place any publishing company demo somewhat earlier. This single-sided 8" acetate is housed in an "audiodisc" generic sleeve, see 7" Single Sleeves. Thanks to Derek Barker of "Isis" magazine for the information. For three 1963 MPHC acetates of Long Ago, Far Away, Quit Your Lowdown Ways and I'd Hate To Be You On That Dreadful Day, see 1963. For a 1964 MPHC acetate of I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met), see Mono Singles & EPs 1962-64. For a 1965 Columbia acetate of Positively 4th Street in an "audiodisc" sleeve, see Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1965. "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" - Columbia acetate (USA), 1965:
R-0327 If You Gotta Go, Go Now - Columbia 1965
acetate of the version released in the Netherlands in 1967 as a single (see R-0055,
1967), but without the overdubbed vocal backing by the Poppies (information from Rob van
Estrik). This take still has backing vocals by Angeline Butler. This take without overdubs, (take 2, 15 Jan 1965) has now been released in Nov 2015 on The Best Of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (2 CD Standard Edition) (CD 1, track 9), The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (6 CD Deluxe Edition) (CD 1, track 22) and The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (18 CD Collector's Edition) (CD 3, track 2). R-0327 is therefore no longer a rarity. R-0055, 1967, remains a rarity. |

R-0488 Highway 61 Revisited - mono version

than stereo album version (3:28) R-0488 is included on the mono release of Highway 61 Revisited as part of the 9CD set The Original Mono Recordings in Oct 2010, so is no longer a rarity. Full details of these singles are now here. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scan. |

|
R-0049 Positively 4th Street - alternate stereo
mix, slightly longer at 4:12 as opposed to 3:56 on regular track Carsten Baumann informs me that he's checked the version on this 1966 album (also on the 1965 Witmark tape, see 1965) against the version now included on the remastered Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits (US release), and they are the same. This means it replaces the single version which is now to be found on CD only on Biograph. (R-0049 is also on the non-US release The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2, see 2000). Thanks also to David Goldsmith for confirmation. The stereo version has therefore ceased to be a rarity, and the entry has now moved here and International Compilations: Various Artist Albums 1962-69. The mono version of R-0049, R-0049M, remains a rarity and is still listed for 1965 and 1966. For the previous release in this series, Disco Teen '65, which contains Subterranean Homesick Blues, see the Various Artist Compilations page of Mono Album Releases and International Compilations: Various Artist Albums 1960-69 (stereo). These are all Witmark & Sons demos recorded in the Witmark offices,
New York, in 1962-63 except R-0037, which is an alternate Columbia studio take

These four acetates on stock labels with handwritten text contain Bob Dylan songs
which were then unreleased and turned up in
2004. They are all single-sided. The
publisher is identified as "W-7 Music", which is Warner Bros/7 Arts, also
publisher of a 12" acetate LP that surfaced in 1967. My tentative identification of the performances
is as follows: R-0691 All Over You - lyrics on bobdylan.com here, Witmark demo, recorded Mar 1963 R-0035-2
The Death Of Emmett Till -
lyrics on bobdylan.com
here, Witmark demo,
recorded Dec 1962, surfaced in 1967 on a 12" Warner
Bros/7 Arts acetate LP,
see 1967 R-0031-3 Ain't Gonna Grieve No More - Witmark demo, recorded Aug 1963, also surfaced in 1967 on a 12" Warner Bros/7 Arts acetate LP, see 1963 and 1967 R-0692 Talkin' John Birch Society Blues - Witmark demo, recorded Mar 1963, previously unreleased The version of this song released on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 in 1991 is a live performance from Carnegie Hall, New York, 26 Oct 1963. For the studio version from the Columbia test pressing and promotional copies of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, see 1963. R-0036-2 (I'd Hate To Be
You On That) Dreadful Day -
Witmark demo, recorded Mar 1963, surfaced in 1967 on a 12" Warner
Bros/7 Arts acetate LP,
see 1967 The fifth acetate, not shown here, contains a studio performance of Bob Dylan's New Orleans Rag, not a Witmark demo, that can be found in 2004. This performance, Take 2 from Columbia Studios, New York, 24 Oct 1963, has now been released on the Columbia/Legacy Europe 6LP limited edition 50th Anniversary Collection 1963, Dec 2013. Also shown are photos of a strange acetate of another Witmark demo, Walkin' Down The Line (R-0539, see 1963 and above), with the same label and typewritten text as the others. However, it has Bob's name as "BOB ZIMMERMAN". This is strange because as far as I know Bob never used his real name after he came to New York in 1961, even before he changed it legally to "Dylan" in Aug 1962. Jeff Gold of Record Mecca was commissioned by Bob's business manager Jeff Rosen to appraise over 10,000 Dylan items at the Bob Dylan Archive at the University of Tulsa, OK, and did not find one with Bob's real name on! Tim Dunn says that not one of Bob's copyrights mentions the name "Zimmerman", not even the earliest Leeds/Duchess Music contracts, and Bob's contract with Witmark was in the name of "Bob Dylan". Bob Dylan/The Band - "Basement Tapes"
test pressings, Sunset Sound Recorders (USA); Feldmans/Dwarf
Music (UK), 1968:
R-0545 and R-0546 have now been released in Nov
2014 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 - The
Basement Tapes Complete (see below), so are no longer rarities.
The Emidisc UK 14 track test pressing LP (two copies of which are shown with different text, one typewritten, one handwritten) is reputedly the source of the songs made available to UK groups such as Manfred Mann (The Mighty Quinn), The Brian Auger Trinity/Julie Driscoll (This Wheel's On Fire), Fairport Convention (Million Dollar Bash), etc. Apparently only about ten copies were pressed. John Bauldie describes this 14 track test pressing in detail in his article "The Basement Tapes" in "Record Collector", Jul 1987, but Hans Seegers disputes its legality. Hans says the songs were only legally distributed on tape, which is confirmed by Dean Chambers, who has information the songs were supplied to the music publishing company Feldmans in London on a 7" reel by Albert Grossman. However, several test pressings were indeed made from this tape for private distribution, and these were the source of the much poorer quality bootleg LPs that surfaced. The US test pressing from Arie de Reus has exactly the same track list and appears official.
Also shown are other Emidisc double-sided and single-sided test pressings for sale on eBay. ("Emidisc" was EMI's brand of recording blank, made at Hayes, Middlesex, which could be used by anyone in the recording industry - exactly like a CD-R today - and the name does not mean this recording was produced by EMI itself. I have other 1960s test pressings pressed using Emidisc blanks. Note these are not acetates, an acetate is single-sided with a metal back, usually aluminium, covered with a soft lacquer on which the recording is cut.) The single Emidisc test pressing of "I Shall Be Released" is of the track from The Basement Tapes sessions eventually released on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 in 1991, not the later version released on Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II in 1971. The title is misspelled "Realeased"! The three other single Emidisc test pressings are all of tracks from the UK LP and later released on The Basement Tapes in 1975. Gerd Rundel's copy of Please Mrs. Henry is blank on the reverse and comes in a grey card sleeve with blue edges. The Emidisc test pressing EP has two takes of Tears Of Rage plus Quinn The Eskimo on Side 1, with Quinn the Eskimo, Open The Door, Richard and "Nothing Is There" (Too Much Of Nothing or Nothing was Delivered?) on Side 2.
Thanks to Arie de Reus, Andrew Codd, Gerd Rundel and Wiebke Dittmer for information and scans.

"Blood On The Tracks" - 12" stereo acetates, Columbia S-19322 (USA), Sep & Oct 1974:
R-0118 Idiot Wind - unreleased take with different lyrics, identified as Take 1, 19 Sep 1974 - the take that appears on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 is Take 4
R-0119 If You See Her, Say Hello - unreleased take with different lyrics, Take 1, 19 Sep 1974
R-0116 Lily, Rosemary & The Jack Of Hearts - unreleased take with extra verse, Take 2, 16 Sep 1974
Bob re-recorded these five tracks at the last minute in Minnesota in Dec 1974 with local musicians, some say because he felt there was a little too much "blood on the tracks", others say it was because his brother David Zimmerman convinced him that all the tracks on the album sounded too similar. Ellen Bernstein may also have had a role in convincing Bob to change the album. All the previous rarities are now released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 - More Blood, More Tracks, Nov 2018, see below.

Acetate 5:
R-0394 Phantom Engineer [It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry] - early version of this song, recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 15 Jun 1965 - I had this listed as an alternate take to the one released on The Bootleg Series Vols.1-3, but Bob Stacy informs me they are the same! A definite alternate take was released in Sep 2005 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 7: No Direction Home! Both are now on The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (18 CD Collector's Edition), Nov 2015
R-0395 Over The Cliff [Sitting On A
Barbed Wire Fence]- recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 15 Jun 1965
I originally listed this as an alternate longer take to the one released on The Bootleg Series Vols.1-3,
but Roger Ford informs me that
this is actually the same take, just a slightly different mix with the piano
more upfront, and not faded at the end.
Now on The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg
Series Vol. 12 (18 CD Collector's Edition), Nov 2015.
R-0396 Freeze Out [Visions of

R-0047 Just A Little Glass Of Water [She's
Your Lover Now] - out-take from Blonde On Blonde, recorded Columbia
Studios, New York, 21 Jan 1966, a solo
piano version, not the version on The Bootleg Series Vols.
1-3
Take 16 has now been released on The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg
Series Vol. 12 (6CD Deluxe Edition) CD5, track 7, and The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg

Deluxe Edition is widely available, R-0047 is no longer a rarity.
Acetate 8:
R-0009
(I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle
[listed as Lonesome Whistle Blues] (Hank Williams) - out-take from The Freewheelin'
Bob Dylan, recorded at Columbia Studios, New York,
25 April 1962 (take 2)

R-0446 Most Of The Time
- this version was reportedly remastered from
the original 1989 Oh Mercy version
Oh Mercy was one of three Dylan albums that were remastered in 1997 but were not then released in the remastered CD format. This track appeared to be from that master. It has now been superseded by the remastered hybrid SA-CD release of Oh Mercy. Bob's contribution, included in Episode 5, "Godfathers and Sons", directed by Marc Levin, is Maggie’s Farm, the electric performance from Newport, 1965, which is no longer a rarity. R-0300-4 Maggie's Farm - recorded live with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band at the Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI, 25 Jul 1965 (footage from Murray Lerner's "Festival!" film, see VHS & DVD 1960s), now on The Bootleg Series Vol. 7 - No Direction Home: The Soundtrack, Sep 2005 |

Hip-O B000074109 (USA) - DVD scan by Jack from Canada |
Thanks to Fred Muller for the following information about the Dylan content: "A series of stills of Dylan at Newport in 1965 (afternoon soundcheck with polka-dot shirt) is shown about halfway through the film, during an interview with Marshall Chess. The soundtrack has an excerpt of the live Newport recording of Maggie's Farm at that point. Immediately thereafter there's about 15 seconds of monochrome film of Dylan with the band members, presumably shortly after the show. It seems to be slowed down somewhat and Dylan holds a wine bottle to his left ear as the camera pans away from him." Thanks to Jack from Canada for scans.

R-0137 It Ain't Me, Babe - live with the Rolling Thunder Revue, Harvard Square Theatre, Cambridge, MA, 20 Nov 1975 This performance was originally released on the 1978 US Columbia promo 12" EP 4 Songs From "Renaldo & Clara" (see 1978). However, Don Handy considers that the performance on this album is different from the performance from the EP 4 Songs From "Renaldo & Clara", which he suggests actually comes from The Forum, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975. Both Glen Dundas and Olof Bjrner confirm the 20 Nov 1975 date on the EP, not 4 Dec 1975. It also appeared on: Thanks to Larry Crum for pointing out that the 2002 version of this performance is actually a remix of the track, so R-0137 remains a rarity. |

This is the complete famous "Halloween Mask" concert at the New York Philharmonic Hall on 31 Oct 1964. We already knew that the concert had been recorded by Columbia, because six tracks from it surfaced on Columbia acetates in 1980 - one of them, Mama, You've Been On My Mind (R-0220), the live duet with Joan Baez, appeared on her Vanguard boxed set Rare, Live & Classic in 1993. This has lead to more rarities being removed from this list! |
The six live tracks from the "Goldmine Acetates", Columbia acetates which surfaced in 1980:
R-0389 You Gotta Go [If You Gotta Go, Go Now]
R-0397 Never Have Met [I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)]
R-0398 Mr. Tambourine Man
R-0399 A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
R-0400 Gates of Eden
R-0220 Mama, You've Been On My Mind - duet with Joan Baez
R-0220 also appeared on Joan Baez's Vanguard boxed set Rare, Live & Classic, 1993
(No entries have actually been moved from the main list because of this release.)
"The Bootleg Series Vol. 7 - No Direction Home: The Soundtrack" - 2CD set, Columbia/Legacy C2K 93937 (USA); Columbia/Legacy 520358 2 (Europe), 29 Aug 2005:

This release means four Rarities are removed from the list: BDC71 Dink's Song (traditional) - from the "Minnesota Hotel Tape", Minneapolis, MN, 22 Dec 1961, from bobdylan.com in Sep 2001, see Online Performances). An excerpt of this song was included in the Highway 61 Interactive CD-ROM, 1995 R-0289 Don't Think Twice, It's All Right - Witmark demo version from Columbia US promo mono 12" LP, different from the regular Freewheelin' version, 1963 |
R-0373 When The Ship Comes In - live, Carnegie Hall, New York, 26 Oct 1963, from the unreleased 1964 Columbia album Bob Dylan In Concert, see 1964
R-0300 Maggie's Farm - recorded live with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band at the Newport Folk Festival, 25 Jul 1965, from Murray Lerner's film Festival, 1967 (see VHS & DVD Part 1), also available on a 1991 Italian CD Bob Dylan 1 accompanying an issue of Il Dizionario del Rock (The Dictionary of Rock) - a series of magazines in the early 1990s, see Questionable Releases
Also, Arie de Reus identifies this rarity as now released here (take 1, recorded Columbia Studios, New York, 29 Jul 1965):
R-0378 Desolation Row - otherwise unreleased alternate take. I was originally told this features a contra bass, but Roger Ford says this take has an electric bass, whereas the album take has a stand-up acoustic bass. Al Kooper also plays electric guitar on this take, as confirmed by him to Roger Ford.
I previously misreported three others as rarities now released:
R-0514 I Was Young When I Left Home (traditional) - from the "Minnesota Hotel Tape", Minneapolis, MN, 22 Dec 1961, now officially released on a bonus disc with the limited edition of "Love And Theft", Sep 2001, see 2001 and 2002. It is released here with a spoken intro, so the version without the intro remains a rarity as R-0514.
R-0580 Sally Gal (Woody Guthrie) - unreleased Freewheelin' out-take from a 1962 Columbia acetate that
surfaced in May 1982
Bob Stacy informs me that the version on The Bootleg Series Vol. 7 is in
fact new, and does not match the two circulating Freewheelin' out-take versions!
This newly released performance is take 1, whereas the two previously
circulating performances were take 3 (R-0580) and take 4 (still officially
unreleased).
R-0394 Phantom Engineer [It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry] - early version of this song, recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 15 Jun 1965. This is actually the take released on The Bootleg Series Vols.1-3, from Columbia acetates that surfaced in 1980, not an alternate as I previously reported. The take on The Bootleg Series Vol. 7 is new!
Thanks to Bob Stacy for the corrections.
(No entries have actually been moved from the main list because of this release.)
"Dylan" - 3CD Deluxe set in box, Columbia/Legacy 88697 11420 2 (USA/Canada/Europe/Australia), 1 Oct 2007/Sony SICP 1553-1555 (Japan), 24 Oct 2007:

The 2CD set release includes six current rarities: R-0266 The Lonesome River (Carter and Ralph Stanley) 3:04 (With Ralph Stanley, from the album Clinch Mountain Country). see 1998 R-0586 'Cross the Green Mountain 8:15 (From Gods and Generals Soundtrack), see 2003 and VHS & DVD 2000s Part 2 R-0680 Dignity 2:09 (Piano demo, Oh Mercy), from a promo US Columbia CD single given away with Bob Dylan's autobiography "Chronicles Vol. 1", see 2004. However, Peter Coulthard points out that the Tell Tale Signs version has approximately five seconds of piano intro that is missing from R-0680, so it remains a rarity. R-0613 Everything Is Broken - alternate take with different lyrics from the version on Oh Mercy, available for download from iTunes in Apr 2003, see Online Performances (Other) R-0738 Huck's Tune (From Lucky You soundtrack), see 2007 and VHS & DVD 2000s Part 4 R-0830 High Water (For Charley Patton) - live, Oakes Garden Theatre, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, 23 Aug 2003, from an exclusive download in Sep 2007 from iTunes with Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine): Mark Ronson Re-Version, see Online Performances (Other) |
Columbia/Legacy 8697 35797 2 (USA) - front of sealed box with sticker (my copy) |
The 3CD version contains:
R-0681 Tryin' To Get To Heaven
- live audience recording from the UK in 2000 (now
identified as Wembley Arena, London, England, 5 Oct 2000), from a US Columbia promo CD single, see
2004
This track was previously wrongly identified as being from the Guildhall,
Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, 25 Sep 2000.
As this is a Limited Edition of 5000 copies, R-0681 remains a rarity.

R-0837 I'm Not There [Bob Dylan/The
Band]
- out-take from The Basement Tapes, recorded at Big Pink,
Saugerties, New York State, Jun-Oct 1967 (5:13), released on I'm Not
There: Original Soundtrack,
see
2007, and also in the I'm Not There feature
film, see VHS & DVD 2000s
Part 4.
This track, which has long
circulated unofficially, is usually known to Dylan fans by its 1970
copyrighted title of "I'm Not
There (1956)" (thanks to Tim Dunn for information). It was available on the bobdylan.com Performances
page in Dec 1997, see Online Performances
(bobdylan.com). The song has now been released in Nov 2014 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 - The
Basement Tapes Complete (CD3, track 11) and The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 -
The Basement Tapes Raw (CD1, track 10), but in a remixed version, so
R-0837 remains a rarity.
Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for information and scans.
"The Bootleg Series, Vol. 12 - The Cutting Edge" - standard 2CD releases, Columbia/Legacy 88875019672 (USA/Canada), 4 Nov 2014; Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 888750196729 (Europe/Australia), 3 Nov 2014:
This release includes several rarities from 1965
and 1966. R-0046 From A Buick 6 - alternate take with
harmonica intro (take 4, 30 Jul 1965, 3:06), from the original US and Canadian
stereo pressings of Highway 61 Revisited, also all Japanese stereo LP
pressings on CBS/Sony from 1968.
This alternate take is also on the Sony Music Japan promo-only 2CD set Dylan Ga Rock
(1993 release only, not the
2010 release) |
R-0047 Just A Little Glass Of Water [She's
Your Lover Now] - out-take from Blonde On Blonde, recorded Columbia
Studios, New York, 21 Jan 1966, a solo
piano version, not the version on The Bootleg Series Vols.
1-3
Take 16 has now been released on The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg
Series Vol. 12 (6CD Deluxe Edition) CD5, track 7, and The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg
Series Vol. 12 (18 CD Collector's Edition) CD11, track 4. Because the 6CD
Deluxe Edition is widely available, R-0047 is no longer a rarity.
R-0758 California
- early version
of Outlaw Blues from Bringing It All Back Home with different lyrics
(which appear in "Writings and Drawings" under this title, lyrics on bobdylan.com
here), recorded at
Columbia Studios, New York, 13 Jan 1965
Now released on The Best Of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg
Series Vol. 12 CD1, track 11, The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg
Series Vol. 12 (6CD Deluxe Edition) CD2, track 1, and The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg
Series Vol. 12 (18 CD Collector's Edition) CD1, track 14, so no longer a
rarity.
R-0727 Outlaw Blues - alternate take from Bringing It All
Back Home, recorded Columbia Studios, New York, 13 Jan 1965 (wrongly listed as "16
Jan 1965"), from "Exclusive Out-takes
From 'The Bootleg Series Vol. 7: No Direction Home - The Soundtrack'"-
Three Track Download Only Single, iTunes (USA/Europe), Nov 2005
This alternate take was then previously uncirculating. Thanks to Roger Ford for
information that this take is now on both the 6CD and 18CD versions of The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 - Bob Dylan
1965-1966 The Cutting Edge released in Nov 2015 (6CD version - CD1, track
14; 18CD version - CD1, track 10), so is now no longer a rarity.
R-0044 Can You Please Crawl Out
Your Window? - early version released on a Columbia US 7" single as Positively
4th Street by mistake and withdrawn very quickly (take 17, recorded at Columbia
Recording Studios, New York, 30 Jul 1965)
See the promo and commercial singles below. Take 17 has now been released in
stereo on The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg
Series Vol. 12 (6CD Deluxe Edition) CD4, track 2, and The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg
Series Vol. 12 (18 CD Collector's Edition) CD6, track 19. Because R-0044 is
in mono, it remains a rarity.
R-0053 Bob Dylan's 115th Dream - edit with false
start/laughing removed, from Bringing It All Back Home - 7" stereo
jukebox EP, Columbia 7-9128 (USA), 1965.
Release of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg
Series Vol. 12 (18 CD Collector's Edition) in Nov 2015 revealed that the
false start with laughing comes from 13 Jan 1965 (take 1, on CD1, track 5),
while the complete take which follows it comes from 14 Jan 1965 (take 2, on CD2,
track 4). R-0053 is therefore also released as CD2, track 4! R-0053 will still remain a rarity, because of the limited availability of
this massive set.
This take without overdubs,
(take 2, 15 Jan 1965) has now been released in Nov 2015 on The Best Of The Cutting Edge
1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (2 CD Standard Edition) (CD 1, track
9), The Cutting Edge
1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (6 CD Deluxe Edition) (CD 1, track 22)
and The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (18 CD Collector's
Edition) (CD 3, track 2). R-0327 is therefore no longer a rarity. R-0055,
1967,
remains a rarity.
R-0062 Pledging My Time - alternate stereo mix on
"Zenith Salutes... The Teen Sound"
(1966) and the Dutch Greatest Hits
Vol. 3 album (1967)
Thanks to Larry Crum for pointing out that this mix appeared on the
revised US stereo version of Blonde On Blonde released on LP in
1968 and on CD in 1982, see 1966 Blonde On
Blonde Rarities.
R-0063 4th Time Around - alternate stereo mix to the one
used on the first 1966 US stereo pressing of Blonde On Blonde on the Dutch Greatest Hits
Vol. 3 album (1967)
This mix was again used on the remixed 1968 US stereo pressing of the album, see
1966
Blonde On Blonde Rarities.
R-0327 If You Gotta Go, Go Now - Columbia 1965
acetate of the version released in the Netherlands in 1967 as a single (see R-0055,
1967), but without the overdubbed vocal backing by the Poppies.
This take without overdubs,
(take 2, 15 Jan 1965) has now been released in Nov 2015 on The Cutting Edge
1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (6 CD Deluxe Edition) (CD 1, track 22)
and The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (18 CD Collector's
Edition) (CD 3, track 2). R-0327 remains a rarity
R-0513 Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? - stereo
version, still officially unreleased, from 1965 Columbia US acetates
The single version
released in Nov 2015 on the 18CD Collector's Edition of The
Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (CD10, track 12)
is in stereo and has been remixed from the original tapes. R-0513 will still remain a rarity, because of the limited availability of
this massive set.
