This page contains promotional and commercial releases of mono 7" singles and EPs with Dylan album tracks for 1962-64. Mono LPs have their own pages, see Mono Album Releases. All Bob's original mono albums from Bob Dylan to John Wesley Harding were released on CD as The Original Mono Recordings in Oct 2010.

For 1962-64 Dylan mono 7" singles and EPs with rarities see the yearly pages in Part 1. For illustrations of all the generic 7" single sleeves used by Bob's record companies from the 1960s onwards, see the 7" Single Sleeves page. (A single has much less value to a collector if it doesn't have its correct original sleeve.)

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

"I'll Fly Away"/"Swing And Turn Jubilee" - mono 10" single-sided acetates, Columbia (no catalogue numbers (USA), Sep 1961:

FlyAway1HammondAcetate.jpg (11932 bytes)
John Hammond's own acetate with I'll Fly Away, photo by Jeff Gold

These acetates, which I assume are mono, are from Carolyn Hester's first Columbia album and are of two of the three tracks on which Bob played harmonica. Because they contain rarities, full details are in 1962 (the album's release year). As they were created before the release of the album, these are Bob's first recordings!

Thanks to Jeff Gold of Record Mecca for photos.

"Rollin' Along" - 10" mono metal acetate, CBS (no catalogue number) (UK), 1962:

Picture from eBay
This four track acetate called "Rollin' Along" (misspelled) has three tracks from Bob Dylan (one twice): on Side 1 it has House Of The Risin' Sun and Freight Train Blues; on Side 2 a second version of Freight Train Blues, the same performance but quieter, and Man Of Constant Sorrow. It comes from the same vendor who offered the Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands 1966 10" metal acetate, see Questionable Releases. However, this type of record label was definitely used by CBS UK. If it's genuine, it was almost certainly made by Philips for CBS Records.

Thanks to Arie de Reus and Gerd Rundel for information.

"Blowin' In The Wind"/"Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" - 7" mono promo and commercial singles, Columbia JZSP 75606/JZSP 75607 (USA), Jul 1963; Columbia 4-42856 (USA), Aug 1963:

Test pressing/Acetate (USA), 1963/1972(?):

Columbia Reference Recording, picture found by Anneke Derksen Hoftijzer
Thanks to Anneke Derksen Hoftijzer for finding this 1963 45 RPM Columbia Reference Recording of Blowin' In The Wind. This is a pressing on black vinyl, not an acetate. Sergio Mariano Romay has found a single-sided 7" acetate of Don't Think Twice, It's All Right, lacquer on metal, from Warner Bros Music Corp, Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles. However, the label has the blue "W" Warner Music logo that seems not to have been used before 1972. The WB Music Corp address is shown as 9200 Sunset Boulevard, Suite 222, which was indeed the address of Warner Bros Records until they moved to Burbank, CA, in 1975, although it appears that the tower block fronting Sunset Boulevard which houses the offices of many entertainment-related companies wasn't opened until 1971. This acetate must therefore, if genuine, date from the 1970s.

The white label promo with black text has a custom sleeve with the famous "Rebel With A Cause" newsletter introducing Bob Dylan written by Bob Thompson of Columbia Records. Manuel García Jara's copy comes in the same sleeve and has a handwritten date of "7/20/63" (20 Jul 1963).

The later white label promo with red text has the catalogue number Columbia 4-42856 - it has the generic mushroom-coloured Columbia sleeve shown on 7" Single Sleeves and comes without the newsletter. Hans Seegers has a white label promo copy with red text with a French-language date stamp of "19 Aout 1963 [19 Aug 1963]" on the A-side, presumably from Canada. This could be the release date or perhaps just the date the record was received by the recipient. The commercial single also came in the mushroom-coloured sleeve. Manuel García Jara has a copy with a date stamp on the B-side of "Aug 21, 1963".

The labels of Jo Slater's copy have darker red text than the other copies shown.

"Blowin' In The Wind" - 7" mono EP, CBS EP 5688 (France), Jun 1964:

CBS EP 5688 (France) - front with blank side of languette, scan by Hans Seegers (first variant)
This was the first Bob Dylan EP in France. The front sleeve photo is a crop of the photo on The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan album. Tracks are:

A-side: Blowin' In The Wind; Corrina, Corrina
B-side: Don't Think Twice, It's All Right; Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance.

Note the unique "languette" or index tab on the right edge of the sleeve of this French EP - these were included by all record companies in France at the time on both albums and EPs. They are easily broken off, but their absence reduces the value of the item considerably to a serious collector.

This EP was released twice. The front of the second sleeve has "Bob Dylan" in a lighter orange, although the difference is not enough to scan successfully. There is a tiny difference on the B-side of the record itself - "45" is slightly larger at 7mm instead of 6mm (shown below). The A-sides are identical.

Thanks to Robert Paulsen for information about this item and to Hans Seegers for further information and scans.

These three EPs were extracted from the Vanguard LPs Newport Broadside (Topical Songs) and The Newport Folk Festival - 1963: The Evening Concerts Vol. 1, released in the UK by Fontana. They were quickly withdrawn because of legal problems with CBS Records (the then trading name of Columbia in the UK) who had licensed Bob's appearances on the Fontana LPs only.

"I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)" - 8" mono acetate, Music Publishers Holding Corp. for Witmark Publishing Company (no catalogue number) (USA), mid 1964:

Picture from eBay found by Jean-Pol Hiernaux
"MPHC" stands for “Music Publishers Holding Corporation,” of which Witmark was a part. This single-sided 8" acetate is housed in an "audiodisc" generic sleeve, see 7" Single Sleeves. It is described on eBay as a Witmark demo recording, although it's probably the studio version from Another Side Of Bob Dylan. since these were used by Witmark after Bob stopped recording demos specifically for them in 1964. The studio recording is in circulation amongst collectors from what are known as "the Emmett Grogan acetates" with Bob saying "OK? Ready?" before he starts the song, edited from the album. If this is that version I'll classify it as a rarity.

The acetate is accompanied by a double-sided music and lyrics sheet which has suffered water damage. Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for finding this on eBay and to Tim Dunn for further information. Tim saw an MPHC acetate with Let Me Die In My Footsteps at the Bob Dylan exhibition at the Experience Music Project, Seattle, WA, in Jan 2005. For three 1963 MPHC acetates of Long Ago, Far Away, Quit Your Lowdown Ways and I'd Hate To Be You On That Dreadful Day, see 1963. For a 1963 MPHC acetate of Paths Of Victory which surfaced in 1992, see 1992.

"All I Really Want To Do" - sheet music, Allan & Co. Pty. Ltd. (Australia), 1964:

Front scan by Stuart Moore
Stuart Moore has a copy of the sheet music for All I Really Want To Do, published by Allan's, the 1960s Dylan music publisher in Australia. As Bob doesn't read or write music, this will have been transcribed from the recording. Copyright records in Tim Dunn's book "The Bob Dylan Copyright Files" often include the name of the transcriber, indicated as working for hire, which means they don't benefit from any royalties.

Taken from the album of the same name listed in 1964 because it contains a Dylan rarity, this EP has:

Side 1: Where Have All The Flowers Gone? (Pete Seeger), This Land Is Your Land (New Christy Minstrels)
Side 2: Blowin' In The Wind (Bob Dylan); This Train (Brothers Four).

Manuel García Jara has a copy with a "DEMONSTRATION RECORD" sticker on the B-side.
