This page lists mono releases of this regular Bob Dylan album. These LPs were listed here because the mono versions of Dylan songs were unavailable on CD until the release of the first eight Dylan albums in mono as The Original Mono Recordings in 2010. Mono LPs with rare tracks (e.g. mono versions with significant differences from the album tracks, such as different mixes, edits or fades) are listed in the main chronological pages. Mono singles up to 1976 have their own pages, see the links above. Thanks to David Burgess for the UK catalogue numbers - all my mono LPs were stolen when my Manchester flat was burgled in May 1968! For stereo releases of this album, see International Album Releases (Regular). |
Blonde On Blonde was released in mono in the USA and Canada, in Europe in the UK, France and Italy only, and in Australia. Details of other worldwide mono releases required! Specific rarities on versions of this mono LP set are detailed in 1966 Blonde On Blonde Rarities. For more details of the story of the different versions of the picture collage on the inside of the gatefold sleeve, see The Blonde On Blonde Missing Pictures.
To explain the limited release in Europe of Blonde On Blonde in mono, Hans Seegers says: "In 1966 there were LP pressing plants in Europe in Holland, West Germany, France, Italy, Spain (where Dylan was forbidden by the Franco regime), Portugal (where Dylan was forbidden by the Salazar regime) and Greece (where Dylan was forbidden by the Greek colonels' regime). In Holland there were three mono LPs released in 1965: Highway 61 Revisited, The Times They Are A-Changin' and Subterranean Homesick Blues (Bringing It All Back Home). In 1966 Blonde On Blonde was released in stereo only, and in 1967 all Bob's works were re-released in stereo only. West Germany did not release a single Bob Dylan mono record, and Scandinavia imported their LPs straight from the UK or Holland. Those dictatorial countries did not start to release Dylan albums until at least five years later, so they were in stereo only."
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

These two 12" mono acetates dated May 1966 are in generic Transco buff sleeves with producer Bob Johnston's name handwritten. They just have "Bob Dylan" and "Side I" or "Side II" in the centres handwritten in white grease pen. Side 1 is unusual in having two versions of Pledging My Time, both the same take, but one brighter and louder than the other. Neither is the 2:06 single edit (R-0052, see 1966). Each acetate has a handwritten track listing:
Arie de Reus says: "The sound quality is great, this is the best Blonde On Blonde that I ever heard. There is very little acetate noise. Pledging my Time has two takes, the first sounds like the Canadian/UK mix, the second like the US mix. Both have the same US shorter length." |
Thanks to Gerd Rundel for finding this on eBay and to Arie de Reus for further information and scans.
"Blonde On Blonde" - 2 vinyl mono LP set, Columbia C2L 41 (USA), mid-Jul 1966:
Columbia C2L 41 (USA) - outside of gatefold sleeve, scan by Scott Smith (promo release with timing strip) |
The release date listed on bobdylan.com was originally 16 May 1966, but this was disputed by many contemporaries, who think it was actually released no earlier than mid July 1966 (see the stereo Blonde On Blonde page of International Album Releases (Regular) for more information). The bobdylan.com release date was first revised to 20 Jun 1966, but is now just "1966". Stuart Moore's white label promo copy with the date of 15 Jul 1966 on the label supports the mid-July date. The front photograph is by Jerry Schatzberg. Note the Columbia logo is upright on the outer sleeve. For more details of the story of the different versions of the picture collage on the inside of the gatefold sleeve, see The Blonde On Blonde Missing Pictures. The US mono 2LP set was re-released by Sundazed in Oct 2002 (see below). The mono LPs of Blonde On Blonde have significantly different mixes and the length of the tracks frequently differ, by up to 50 seconds in some cases (information from Les Kokay and Roger Ford). Specific rarities on this mono release, also on Columbia singles, are detailed in 1966 Blonde On Blonde Rarities. Yoshihiko Satake tells me that the Japanese stereo LP release of Blonde On Blonde is closest to the US mono LP - see 1966 Blonde On Blonde Rarities. The US mono white label promo set shown has a Radio Station Service timing strip sticker on the back of the gatefold sleeve. Gerd Rundel's promo copy has the same timing strip as Scott Smith's copy and a sticker (now removed) promoting two tracks. The records have white promo labels and Gerd's copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP113761-2F, Side 2 - XLP113762-3F, Side 3 - XLP113763-4D, Side 4 - XLP113764-2B. Sergio Mariano Romay has found a promo copy on eBay with the same timing strip on the rear of the gatefold sleeve and a strange "SPECIAL MONO RADIO STATION COPY" front sticker. The records of this copy have white labels as shown and stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP113761-2F T 2, Side 2 - XLP113762-3F T 2, Side 3 - XLP113763-4D A1 o, Side 4 - XLP113764-2B B1 o. These are the same as those of Gerd's copy - the "T" code indicates they were pressed at Terre Haute, IN. |

Columbia C2L 41 (USA) - "360º Sound" Side 4 scan by Gerd Rundel (commercial release) |
Columbia C2L 41 (USA) - spine scan by Renaud Depierreux (compare with
Sundazed release below)
Brad Savage has an original promo copy of "C2L 41" with a hole punched out of the Columbia logo in the upper left corner of the sleeve. The front upper right corner has a round gold "PROMOTIONAL ALBUM"/"COLUMBIA SPECIAL PRODUCTS" sticker. The inside gatefold has the original nine photo layout and the typical "Memphis Blues Again" across the top left above the photos. Song 2 on the Side 2 record label is not "MEMPHIS BLUES AGAIN" but "STUCK INSIDE OF MOBILE WITH THE" and Song 3 is exactly as follows: "Leopard-skin Pill-box hat")? The records have matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP113761-2J, Side 2 - XLP113762-3D, Side 3 - XLP113763-4H, Side 4 - XLP113764-2J.
Gerd Rundel's original promo copy of "C2L 41" has a hole punched out of the Columbia logo in the bottom left corner of the sleeve. The front sleeve again has a round gold "PROMOTIONAL ALBUM"/"COLUMBIA SPECIAL PRODUCTS" sticker, but below the upper right corner. The inside gatefold again has the original nine photo layout and the typical "Memphis Blues Again" across the top left above the photos.
The US mono white label promo set shown has a Radio Station Service timing strip sticker on the back of the gatefold sleeve. Gerd Rundel's promo copy has the same timing strip as Scott Smith's copy and a sticker (now removed) promoting two tracks. The records have white labels with stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP113761-2F, Side 2 - XLP113762-3F, Side 3 - XLP113763-4D, Side 4 - XLP113764-2B.
Manuel García Jara has a copy of the "360º Sound" commercial release with demonstration stickers on Side 1 and Side 3 that read "FOR DEMONSTRATION USE ONLY NOT FOR SALE"
Gerd Rundel's "360º Sound" commercial copy shown above has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP113761-2A, Side 2 - XLP113762-3B, Side 3 - XLP113763-4F, Side 4 - XLP113764-2F.
The 1966 commercial copies shown above could have one of three different stickers on the front sleeve, the sticker promoting Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 and I Want You comes in two versions - one including a full track listing and the other without it. The orange sticker has text "DELUXE (2) RECORD SET". All these copies come with the nine photo inside gatefold sleeve including Claudia Cardinale. The records have red Columbia labels with the "MONO/360º SOUND" plus arrows logo in white.
Rob O'Connor has a C2L 41 copy with the Claudia Cardinale inner sleeve, where the sleeve is UK-style, made of thin white card with the artwork printed directly on to it, rather than the US-style composite sleeve with the artwork printed on to a white paper slick which is then pasted onto the thick buff card sleeve. Both Bob Stacy and Roger Ford have copies with US-style composite sleeves, so Rob's copy is unusual. I have no reason to believe the sleeve is a fake.
Walter Clay has a commercial copy of what must be a second release, still with the inside Claudia Cardinale and “whisperer” photos. It has "360º SOUND" and "NONBREAKABLE" on all four record labels with “STUCK INSIDE OF MOBILE WITH THE” and "Leopard-skin Pill-box hat” on Side 2. The records of this copy have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP113761-2F, Side 2 - XLP113762-3E, Side 3 - XLP113763-4B, Side 4 - XLP113764-2A. Lars M. Banke has an identical copy as shown, this time the records have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP113761-2J, Side 2 - XLP113762-3D, Side 3 - XLP113763-4D, Side 4 - XLP113764-2D.
Gage Kenady has an original US mono copy that has a slight label variation on the first disc. On Side 2 it has "STUCK INSIDE OF MOBILE WITH THE" and "Leopard-skin Pill-box hat" as shown above". The Side 2 matrix number is XLP113762-3D (same as Lars' copy). On neither Side 1 or 2 does it say "NONBREAKABLE" as it does on the second disc and the labels shown above.
Gordon Todd says: "I have two mono copies of the Cardinale gatefold, both with "Memphis Blues Again" in the track listing. However, the photos in one are black halftones and blue plus black duotones in the other. The duotone version has a clear dark blue hue that is missing from the other. Magnification of the duotones clearly shows two ink colors in the lithography dots. Do you have any insight into this variation? Perhaps the two-color printing was scrapped on later pressings to cut cost." No contributor so far has seen a copy with the blue tinge, and Manuel García Jara thinks it's just a printing variant.
Peter Roy's copy has the original gatefold sleeve design with the picture of Claudia Cardinale. The record labels have "BLONDE ON BLONDE" above "BOB DYLAN". All sides have the expected songs but the matrix numbers are the same for both records: Sides 1/3 - XLP113763-4F, Sides 2/4 - XLP113763-2E (the sides should be "XLP 113761", "XLP 113762", "XLP 113763" and "XLP 113764").
Karen Kavanaugh has a copy of the first release where both sides of Record 2 have the Side 3 label (labelled "SIDE 1"), although Side 4 plays Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands as expected. I have no heard of any other instance of this. Renaud Depierreux has a copy of the second release without the Claudia Cardinale picture on the inner gatefold. This copy also has a front sticker as shown above. The records come in clear plastic bag inner sleeves and have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP113761-2F, Side 2 - XLP113762-3E, Side 3 - XLP113763-4D, Side 4 - XLP113764-2B. Yoshihiko Satake has a copy without the Claudia Cardinale picture on the inner gatefold that has a blank label on Side 1, with all the black text missing.
Clayton Trevorrow has recently acquired a US mono copy of Blonde On Blonde with some intriguing qualities. The sleeve has the normal "C2L 41" catalogue number, but lacks the Claudia Cardinale photo on the inside of the gatefold. Additionally, the track listing on the sleeve features the shortened "Memphis Blues Again" song title. The paper Columbia inner sleeve, which he believes to be original, advertises Nashville Skyline and several other albums that came out in 1969. The record matrix numbers also suggest a production date that seems later than when mono copies were pressed. They are: Record 1, Side 1: XLP113761-2B; Record 1, Side 2: XLP113762-3G; Record 2, Side 1: XLP113763-4F; Record 2, Side 2: XXLP113764-2G (note the "XXLP" on the Side 4 matrix number). Lastly, the song titles on the record labels include the shortened "MEMPHIS BLUES AGAIN" and the "Leopard-skin Pill-box hat" with the lower case "h".
Evan Ruster has a similar copy, but this time it does have the Claudia Cardinale inner gatefold sleeve. The record matrix numbers on Record 1 are also earlier and very similar to Clayton's above, and exactly the same on Record 2. They are: Record 1, Side 1 - XLP113761-2A; Record 1, Side 2 - XLP113762-3H; Record 2, Side 1 - XLP113763-4F; Record 2, Side 2 - XXLP113764-2G (again note the "XXLP" on the Side 4 matrix number). The records again have "o" marks in the vinyl which mean they were pressed at Pitman, NJ.
Thanks to Stephan Pickering for information and to Scott Smith, Ulf Gyllenspetz, Marc Kuszel, Gerd Rundel, Manuel García Jara, Joe Boden and Renaud Depierreux for pictures.
"Blonde On Blonde" - 2 vinyl mono LP set, Sundazed/Columbia LP 5110 (USA), Oct 2002:
Columbia/Sundazed LP 5110 (USA) - picture from Sundazed web-site (2002 release) |
The US mono 2LP set was re-released by Sundazed on 180gm vinyl in Oct 2002. Sadly, they did not get permission to reproduce the original inner sleeve with the picture of Italian actress Claudia Cardinale. Thanks to Robert Kornovich for pointing out that very few US mono copies of Blonde On Blonde were produced with the revised layout, so Sundazed are reproducing the version that was least available in the 1960s! For the original inner sleeve layout and variations, see above and The Blonde On Blonde Missing Pictures. Thanks to Renaud Depierreux for information that Sundazed are now selling off five white label test pressings of this set. The commercial release discs have darker red labels than those of the original mono release. This release also appeared on CD as part of what is called "The Millennium Remasters Collection" of mono recordings, but as far as I know this was unauthorised (see above). The real mono CD release of Blonde On Blonde from 2010 is shown at the bottom of this page. |

Columbia 88697761051-7/C2L 41 (USA) - outside of gatefold sleeve, scan by Manuel García Jara (2010 release) |
This heavyweight vinyl mono 2LP release is part of the LP version of the 2010 9LP set The Original Mono Recordings, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s, sold separately. The inside of the gatefold sleeve has the revised seven photo layout without the photo of Claudia Cardinale (the 2002 Sundazed mono 2LP release also used the revised inner sleeve). Thanks to Robert Kornovich for pointing out that very few US mono copies of Blonde On Blonde were produced with the revised layout, so Sundazed in 2002 and Columbia in 2010 reproduced the version that was least available in the 1960s! The record labels reproduce the style of the original 1966 mono labels. As well as "C2L 41" the record sides are also numbered "88697761051-7A/B/C/D". These numbers are also the matrix numbers. |

"Blonde On Blonde" - 2 vinyl mono LP set, Vinyl Me Please VMP-E120/Columbia C2L 41 (USA), Dec 2022:
Thanks to Rechi von Lehen, Arie de Reus and Éamonn Ó Catháin for news that US record club Vinyl Me Please is issuing the mono Blonde On Blonde on coloured vinyl (described as brown but looks gold) as their Dec 2022 selection. The inside layout is sadly the replacement without Claudia Cardinale. The records have been remastered from the original tapes by Ryan K Smith, and the set is accompanied by a 12" booklet with Listening Notes by Michael Simmons and a fine art print by Elio Moavero. You can obtain the set by joining the record club, but copies are being offered for sale on eBay.
"Blonde On Blonde" - mono 2LP set, Columbia C2L 41 (Canada), Summer 1966:
Columbia C2L 41 (Canada) - spine of gatefold sleeve,
scan by Gerd Rundel
The mixes are very noticeably different on Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine) and 4th Time Around, and Bob makes a vocal slip on Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands (Take 4) that's been rectified on all other releases except the Canadian mono release. At the end of the fourth verse he sings "how could they ever have...uh...'suaded you". This was corrected by a splicing from Take 1, "how [could they ever have persuaded] you". Ironically the version of Take 4 included on the Nov 2015 18CD set The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 – Bob Dylan 1965-1966 The Cutting Edge Collector’s Edition is the spliced version, not the original version from this album!
The inside of the gatefold sleeve is pasted on the heavy card cover, and the records have plain white sleeves. This release has the Claudia Cardinale picture on the inside gatefold and "Memphis Blues Again" on both the sleeve and the Side 2 label.
Dale Wiese says about the vinyl weight: "Although the weight of the pressing is somewhat more than a typical 1970s issue, it is certainly not akin to a 180 gram pressing. My best estimate is that it is likely 150 gram, possibly less. It does have the exact matrix info as the copy you describe, and crucially, the vocal hesitation at the end of the fourth verse of Sad Eyed Lady. I rather doubt that there was ever a slightly later mono repress of a lighter weight than the original 1966 issue." Thanks to Gerd Rundel for confirming that the weights of both records are below 150gm.
Thanks to Mike Pearson, Roger Kornovich, Arie de Reus, Gerd Rundel, Stephan Pickering and Bob Meyer for information and scans.
"Blonde On Blonde" - 2 vinyl mono LP set,
CBS DDP 66012/CL 2516-2517 (UK),
13 Aug 1966 onwards:
Thanks to Yan Friis for the information that the
album first charted in the UK on 20 Aug 1966.
Ian Woodward has calculated the release date as 13 Aug 1966 based on
contemporary press reports. My mem'ry that I must
have bought it in late June 1966 therefore served me wrong! The (corrected)
story of how I bought it is
here. Donald Welsh has a copy bought in
Glasgow with a pencilled
date of "27/8/1966" (27 Aug 1966) on the inside of the gatefold sleeve above
Claudia Cardinale's photo, possibly made by the record shop at the time of
receipt.
The CBS logo is rotated on the front sleeve, which also has the text "Featuring I WANT YOU and RAINY DAY WOMEN #12 & 35" (both of these had been released as singles). For more about the original album sleeve and the inside gatefold pictures, which were the original set with Claudia Cardinale, see The Blonde On Blonde Missing Pictures. This set has the Canadian mono mix on Sides 1 and 2, and the US mono mix on Sides 3 and 4! Specific rarities on this mono LP, also on Columbia mono singles, are detailed in 1966 Blonde On Blonde Rarities. The inside of the gatefold sleeve has two folded-over flaps. Bruce Mulle's promo copy has a white information sticker listing all the tracks.
CBS DDP 66012 (UK) - release summary:
There were three main record label variants: the first has "BLONDE ON BLONDE" above "BOB DYLAN" above the centre hole, with "Record 1/2" on the right. There were two sub-variants of this release: Sides 1, 3 and 4 are the same but there are two different Side 2s, like the inside gatefold sleeve the first has Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again listed as "Memphis Blues Again" (variant 1A), the second has "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With Thee" (variant 1B). The playing speed on both is shown as just "33".
The second record label variant has "BOB DYLAN" above "BLONDE ON BLONDE" with "Record 1" below, all above the centre hole. This variant has Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again listed as "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With Thee" on both the Side 2 label and the inside gatefold sleeve. The playing speed is now "33⅓" but be found in two different typefaces: in the same typeface as "33" on the first release labels (variant 2A); in a smaller typeface (variant 2B).
The third record label variant again has "BOB DYLAN" above "BLONDE ON BLONDE" with "Record 1" below, all above the centre hole. It also has "MONO" plus arrows to the left of the centre hole. This variant again has Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again listed as "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With Thee" on both the Side 2 label and the inside gatefold sleeve. The playing speed is again "33⅓" in the same typeface as variant 2B.
For equivalent UK releases in stereo see the stereo album page on International Album Releases (Regular).
CBS DDP 66012 (UK) - first release (1966):
The orange inner sleeve shown above was the 1966 original, with details of current UK CBS albums, with Dylan albums up to but not including Blonde On Blonde (Gerd Rundel has a 1965-66 copy of the mono Another Side Of Bob Dylan that has this same inner sleeve). I have a copy of another album with a different 1966 CBS UK inner sleeve that includes an illustration of Blonde On Blonde at top right. John Gaylor's copy of the first release has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - DDP 66012-A1, Side 2 - DDP 66012-B1, Side 3 - DDP 66012-C1, Side 4 - DDP 66012-D1. Gerd Rundel's copy of the first mono release has the same stamped matrix numbers as John Gaylor's. Gerd also has a copy of the first release with the same stamped matrix numbers with a different cheaper blue price sticker of 50/- (£2/10/0 or £2.50 today).
CBS DDP 66012 (UK) - second release (1967):
There are two variants of record labels. For variant 2A "33⅓" is in the same typeface as "33" above. This is in line with the first and second releases of the stereo version.
Renaud Depierreux has a copy with the 1967 inner sleeves with variant 1B labels on Record 1 and variant 2A labels on Record 2. The record of this copy still has matrix numbers: Side 1 - DDP 66012-A1, Side 2 - DDP 66012-B1, Side 3 - DDP 66012-C1, Side 4 - DDP 66012-D1. Ian Woodward has a copy which he thinks dates from 1967, with variant 1B labels with playing speed "33" on Record 1 (the Side 2 variant with "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With Thee"), and variant 2A labels with playing speed "33⅓" on Record 2. These records have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - DDP 66012 A1, Side 2 - DDP 66012 B1, Side 3 - DDP 66012 C1, Side 4 - DDP 66012 D1. Neil Cregan has a copy with mixed labels - Record 1 has variant 2A labels, Record 2 has variant 2B labels with the playing speed "33⅓" in a different typeface. Gerd Rundel has a copy where both records have variant 2B labels.
CBS DDP 66012 (UK) - third release (1969):
Gerd Rundel's third release copy has no front price sticker. There is "MONO" plus arrows on all four record labels. "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With Thee" is misprinted on both the Side 2 record label and the inside of the gatefold sleeve. The matrix numbers are: Side 1 - 66012 A2, Side 2 - 66012 B1, Side 3 - DDP 66012 C1, Side 4 - DDP 66012 D1.
Neil Cregan has a second copy with mixed record labels (not shown). There is an original round gold price sticker for 59/5d next to the CBS logo on the front sleeve, as John Gaylor's copy above. The records of this copy do not have original inner sleeves. Record 1 has variant 3 labels as Gerd's copy. Record 2 has variant 2B labels as above. The record matrix numbers are again: Side 1 - DDP 66012 A2, Side 2 - DDP 66012 B1, Side 3 - DDP 66012 C1, Side 4 - DDP 66012 D1.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, John Gaylor, Roger Ford, Gerd Rundel, Bruce Mulle, Ben Floresca, and Neil Cregan for information and pictures.
"Blonde On Blonde" - mono vinyl promo and commercial 2LP sets, CBS 66012 (France), Sep 1966, re-released 1971:
CBS 66012 (France), Sep 1966 test pressing:
This French release is unique in that the gatefold sleeve has a completely different centre with French sleeve notes and pictures of earlier CBS France Dylan releases. All the pictures in the US/UK gatefold centre are missing. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again is here given as just "Memphis Blues Again" on the inside of the gatefold sleeve and record label. The records are unusual in that they have another set of mixes again! They have the US mix on Sides 1 and 4, but have unique mixes on Side 2 and 3. Roger Ford thinks these are later mixes than the US mix, while the Canadian mixes are earlier. Roger says: "The mixes unique to this release are of Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat, Temporary Like Achilles, 4th Time Around and Obviously 5 Believers. These mixes appear to be later than those on the Canadian mono album but earlier than those on the US mono." For Roger's Electric Dylan web-site, see .
CBS 66012 (France), Sep 1966 onwards (sleeves printed by Jean Colombet and "B.I.E.M." on the record labels):
Gerd Rundel has a copy of the first release that I have called "variant 2" with the same gatefold sleeve that opens in the centre for the records. The outside of gatefold sleeve is laminated while inside is matt. The text below the centre hole on the Side 1 record label is positioned higher than on the Side 1 record label of Chris Hirte's copy, also the text on Gerd's Side 4 label is positioned differently to the left and right of the CBS logo. The Side 2 and Side 3 labels look the same as those of Chris Hirte's copy. These records have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - HI 66012 A1 - Side 2: HI 66012 A2, Side 3 - HI 66012 B1, Side 4 - H 66012 B2. Jérémie Viala's first release variant 3 copy comes in the same sleeve. The records have dark orange labels and different positioning of text elements such as the song titles and the "33 T." playing speed.
Robert Kornovich has two copies - the first has labels as shown above with "B.I.E.M." to the right of the centre hole. B.I.E.M. (Bureau International des Sociétés Gérant les Droits d'Enregistrement et de Reproduction Mécanique) is an international copyright organisation based in France. The gatefold opens in the centre for the records. The second copy, purchased in the early 1970s, has "SACEM" to the right of the centre hole (see below for details) and the gatefold opens at the edges. Stan (casimir99) reports his copy of the gatefold sleeve opens at the inside centre and at the edges, so there are three variants, confirmed by Jérémie Viala! Stan's records also have the "B.I.E.M." labels. The records of Jérémie Viala's copy appear to have very dark orange/red labels.
Thanks to Jean-Luc S from France for information about the mono copy. Jean-Luc thinks that his copy sounds as if it is in stereo, although it says "Mono" on the sleeve (although not on the labels).
The sleeves of all of these copies except Robert Kornovich's second copy described below were printed in Paris by Jean Colombet. Lars M. Banke has submitted scans of five copies, four of which have sleeves printed by Jean Colombet and the "B.I.EM." logo on the record labels. These have record labels with varying text placement, and are all shown for completeness. On the Side 3 label of the copy I've labelled "4A" the album title is misprinted as "LO NDE ON BLONDE"! The record labels of the copy I've labelled "4B" are a deeper orange than those of the other two copies owned by Lars. Lars also notes the gatefold sleeve variants:
1A: no information
1B: opens from the outside – white border2A: opens from the outside – white border
2B: opens from the inside – white border3: no information
4A: opens from the inside – no white border
4B: opens from the inside – white border
Stan's variant opens at both the inside and the outside!
CBS 66012 (France), 1971 (sleeves printed by Graphicolor or Jean Colombet and "SACEM" on the record labels):
CBS 66012 (France) - detail of spine,
scan by Peter Coulthard (1971 release with overprint on left)
There is also a different printer's mark on the right hand side of the inner sleeve of Peter Coulthard's copy. Instead of having the "Jean Colombet" printer's mark as shown above, this sleeve has the printer's name "Graphicolor" (also a Parisian printer). Otherwise the inside of the gatefold is identical to that of the first release. The openings for the records on the gatefold sleeve are at the outside edges. The records of the Peter Coulthard's copy shown have dark orange labels.
Lars M. Banke's fifth copy has a sleeve printed by Graphicolor with "XT" on the rear as shown and the "SACEM" logo on the record labels. The sleeve again opens at the outside edges for the records (i don't know how Peter Coulthard's copy opens). The records of the copy shown have deeper orange labels than those of Lars' other copies.
Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy with the same "SACEM" record labels as those of Peter Coulhard's copy and almost the same sleeve - the CBS front logo again has a white border, it has "2XT" on the rear, the records openings are on the outside, and there is the same overprint on the spine as shown. However, the printer is not Graphicolor but still Jean Colombet. The "PARIS XV" under the Jean Colombet logo is now missing.

CBS
66012 (Italy) - detail of spine, scan by Manuel García Jara (all
releases)
The inside gatefold of the first and second releases have the nine photo design including Claudia Cardinale. Each side of the original inner gatefold sleeve has two folded-over flaps. The Italian text is printed on the bottom of the Claudia Cardinale photo, see the detail scan. There is no printer's name on the sleeve. Emanuele Patrocco says: "The first mono pressing has a gatefold sleeve, laminated outside, nine photos inside, regular CBS orange labels without "SIAE" logos. This edition is very hard to find." The records have orange CBS labels with "MADE IN ITALY" plus extra text at the bottom. The matrix numbers to the right of the centre hole are printed upside down.
Thanks to Renaud Depierreux for finding a copy on eBay with a different 1960s label design with a stamped "SIAE" logo. It still has the original inside sleeve with the nine photos, but the inner sleeves (which may not be original) date from 1973 because they show the latest CBS albums including Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid. The record labels now just have "MADE IN ITALY" at the bottom and the matrix numbers to the right of the centre hole are now printed the right way up.
CBS 66012 (Italy), ca. 1970:
The records of Andrea Brillo's copy have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP 113761 10/11/66, Side 2 - CBS XLP 113762 10/11/66, Side 3 - XLP 113763 11/11/66, Side 4 - XLP 113764 11/11/66. The mastering dates are 10 Nov 1966 for Record 1 and 11 Nov 1966 for Record 2.
CBS 66012 (Italy), 1975:
CBS 66012 (Italy), 1979:
Manuel García Jara has a copy of the final Italian mono release from 1979. The outer sleeve is not laminated. The front has a smaller CBS logo than on the front of the previous releases. The inner gatefold is monochrome as the earlier 1970s release, with the track listing at top left. The records again have 1970s-style orange-yellow CBS labels. These labels have "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS" at the bottom, the "SUGAR" has been removed, but the text is still aligned as if it were present. The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP-113761 10/11/66 (10 Nov 1966), Side 2 - CBS XLP-113762 10/11/66 (10 Nov 1966), Side 3 - XLP-1137613 1L/3 10/1/79 (10 Jan 1979), Side 4 - XLP-113764 11/11/66 (11 Nov 1966). For some reason Side 3 had a new master from 1979.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Roger Ford and Renaud Depierreux for information, and to Manuel García Jara, Emanuele Patrocco and Dr. Walter Roedl for scans.

CBS 2BP-220019 (Australia) - outside of gatefold sleeve, photo by Peter Lindberg |
This rare album has a fully laminated gatefold sleeve with
the Claudia Cardinale picture inside and
orange CBS labels. I don't as yet know which mono version it is. The records are numbered CBS BP-233345 and CBS BP-233346.
The Australian record labels have the royalty logo of "J. ALBERT & SON" as
on the first Australian stereo release, see
International Album
Releases (Regular). The record labels have round the circumference at the bottom the
text "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS"
without a CBS copyright. This is because up to 1977 all Australian records were
manufactured by the Australian Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. Thanks to Peter Lindberg and Rob Cole for information and photos/scans. |

This album was also sold in Europe by the Dutch company Music On Vinyl as "MOVLP 245". The copy shown has a gold Music On Vinyl sticker on the front sleeve and a white sticker with a barcode on the rear sleeve at bottom right. The record in the Dutch release is the same as that in the 2010 US release.
Éamonn Ó Catháin says that the 2010 MOV release has the same details as the mono box set (see Mono Recordings_2010) - that is, it repeats the "LP7" handwritten information in the vinyl as well as "MOVLP 245". Despite being pressed in Europe it uses the American label, claiming to be made in the USA. It actually says "printed in USA" on the 2010 European MOV release.

Sonny Boy McFitzson says there are two different pressings of Blonde mono LP 2015. One is a USA pressing whose lacquer was cut at Greg Calbi's Sterling Sound, by Ryan K. Smith. The other is Dutch, pressed by Record Industry. Both have the "LEGACY" and "SONY MUSIC" logos with a barcode on the rear and "Made in the EU." on the record labels.
The 2015 record labels have different circumference text from the 2010 labels, and also have the Legacy and Sony Music logos under "Produced by Bob Johnston". None of these releases came with an included CD or an MP3 download link. The records of Éamonn Ó Catháin's copy (my copy is still sealed) have matrix numbers: Side 1 - 88697761051-LP7-A 88020 1A MOVLP 245, Side 2 - 88697761051-LP7-B 88020 1B MOVLP 245, Side 3 - 88697761051-LP7-C 88020 1C MOVLP 245, Side 4 - 88697761051-LP7-D 88020 1D MOVLP 245. These are the old catalogue numbers from the 2010 release, not the new catalogue number. Each side also has "Sterling" and "RKS" stamped in the vinyl, which mean that the records were mastered by Ryan K Smith of Sterling Sound, Edgewater, NJ. The records of Jack from Canada's copy have what look like the same matrix numbers: Side 1 - 88697761051 - LP 7 - A 88020 1A MOVLP 245, Side 2 - 88697761051 - LP 7 - B 88020 1B MOVLP 245, Side 3 - 88697761051 - LP 7 - C 88020 1C MOVLP 245, Side 4 - 88697761051 - LP 7 - D 88020 1D MOVLP 245.
These same labels are used on the brand-new French FNAC white vinyl release although the matrix numbers consist of only a stamped long catalogue number and no reference whatsoever to "MOV" or "LP7".
Éamonn Ó Catháin says that the Italian recent partwork pressing does have new copyright details on the label circumference text (which is otherwise the same as the 2015 release). It carries a "© 2018" mention and, as per the Beatles' series, "under licence to DeAgostini". Éamonn added on 3 Mar 2021: "You probably are already aware of this, but following discussions yesterday, it seems to me that the difference between those recent copies of 1960s Dylan LPs that either have the MOVLP mention or the longer catalogue number only is that the former are all-analogue (AAA) while the latter are digital. To examine this theory, I did a shootout yesterday between two such copies of Blonde On Blonde. While both sound excellent in isolation, compared to one another, the digital copy suffered tremendously, with the RKS AAA sonically way out in front. The digital copy was the recent white vinyl issue and as you know there was a black vinyl issue of this without the RKS mention about three years ago. I would further suggest that the digital versions which replaced the AAA versions were possibly prepared by Sony for licensing to DeAgostini, only to filter thereafter into general release. The same happened with the Beatles - in the case of the 2015 AAA Red and Blue LPs, the versions offered by DeAgostini just a couple of years later were prepared from a digital file."

Several people have also emailed me and provided pictures of what
purports to be a CD promo in a digipak of the mono version of Blonde On Blonde
released in Germany, being sold on a Japanese online auction site. The
digipak uses the artwork of the Dutch Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits
and Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits 2 releases, see
International
Albums (Dylan-Only Compilations) 1960s. Roger Ford
tells me it's also been described on eBay as being from Sweden. This
item has the CBS logo on the digipak and the CD itself, with a catalogue
number of M 66012 (the same number as the UK, French and Italian mono
releases above). However, it's not a genuine CBS release, but a pirate
copy of what sounds like "a very worn copy of the US mono mix" according
to Roger. It's shown here for information purposes only.
For the official 2010 CD release of the mono album, see below. Thanks to Senne Willems for photos. |

Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88697761042 (USA/Europe), 19 Oct 2010:
This set of Bob's first eight albums in the original mono mixes comes in a cutaway card box inside an outer box. The CD albums are in thick card sleeves reproducing the original mono album artwork, in this case the gatefold sleeve of Columbia C2L 41. The two CDs for this album come in plain inner sleeves and their design is based on the original Columbia design (see above). Again nearly all the US Blonde On Blonde mono albums used the inner layout with Claudia Cardinale but the US and European sets use the replacement design. It's very disappointing that Columbia were not able to resolve any copyright issues (if they even tried).
Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for information that this album can be downloaded in MP3 format from Play.com in the UK for £8.49 or £0.89 per track. For full details of the set, see here.
