This page lists mono releases of this regular Bob Dylan album. For mono Greatest Hits albums with different track
lists, see Mono Dylan-Only Compilation Albums
1960s and Mono Dylan-Only
Compilation Albums 1970s. These LPs were listed here because the mono versions of Dylan songs
were
unavailable on CD until the release of the first eight Dylan albums in mono as
The Original Mono Recordings in 2010. For full details of the set, see
here. Although this album was not amongst
them all the tracks including Positively 4th Street (on The Best Of The
Original Mono Recordings compilation) are now available in mono. In fact,
the single CD The Best Of The
Original Mono Recordings contains all ten of these tracks, see
The Best Of The Original Mono Recordings (2010)! For stereo releases of this album, see International Album Releases (Regular). |
Mono LPs with rare tracks (e.g. mono versions with significant differences from the album tracks, such as different mixes, edits or fades) are listed in the main chronological pages. Mono singles up to 1976 have their own pages, see the links above.
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

"Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits" - mono vinyl LP, Columbia KCL 2663
(USA), 27 Mar 1967:
The front photograph is a live 1966 shot by Rowland Scherman, whose name is
misspelled on the rear sleeve as "Roland Scherman". The rear photo is
by David Gartner and Fred Hammerstein. The mono front
sleeve has a slightly lower crop of the picture than the stereo sleeve. For the stereo
release of this album, see
International Album
Releases (Regular). Roger Ford informs me that this album was compiled from the various
mono albums, unlike the UK mono album - see 1967.
Tracklisting:
Side 1: Rainy Day Women #12 & 35; Blowin' In The Wind; The Times They Are A-Changin'; It Ain't Me, Babe; Like A Rolling Stone.
Side 2: Mr Tambourine Man; Subterranean Homesick Blues; I Want You; Positively 4th Street (1965 single); Just Like A Woman.

This album came with a "psychedelic" poster by
Milton Glaser, shown above right. According to the 2012 French Télérama
magazine "Dylan Is Dylan" the Milton Glaser poster was inspired by the 1959
work "Self Portrait in Profile" by French artist Marcel Duchamp. The front sleeve of the album had a sticker advertising the poster which came in both black/white and purple/white. The rear sleeve advertised all seven of Bob's previous albums and had another live 1966 picture of Bob. This mono album was first released with the "MONO" and "360º SOUND"/arrows label design, the earlier "GUARANTEED HIGH FIDELITY" design (see the mono Bob Dylan page) had by now been discontinued. However, it was later released with just "MONO" and without the "360º SOUND"/arrows logos, as seen on the John Wesley Harding mono label - thanks to Keith Polasko for the information and scans (the label change can now be dated to late 1967). Gerd Rundel's first release copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP 117275-1A, Side 2 - XLP 117276-1A. The front sleeve has the sticker advertising the giant poster as shown. |
Justin Calderone has a copy where Side 2 has a slight echo on Mr. Tambourine Man. This copy has mono matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP117275-1A, Side 2 - XLP117276-1F CII.
Harley ("Big Neon") has a copy of this album where Side 1 is blank except for the white pre-printed Columbia information, the black text is missing. This is an extreme rarity as I know of no other such copy.
The second release dates from after 1968, and has the labels without "360 SOUND" first introduced with John Wesley Harding. Gerd Rundel's second release copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP-117275-1D. Side 2 - XLP-117275-1B. Nathaniel Nash has a copy with second release labels with matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP-117275-1A. Side 2 - XLP-117275-1A, the same as Gerd Rundel's first release copy. It was stamped with the same master, but using the newer labels.
Columbia KCL 2663 (USA) - rear photocopy by Paul Shenton (second commercial release) |
Paul Shenton's copy with second release labels has the same matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP-117275-1A. Side 2 - XLP-117275-1A. Paul's rear sleeve has both stereo and mono catalogue numbers as above, but a slight difference on the photo credit, which is just to David Gartner. Both Hans Seegers and Gerd Rundel's rear sleeves above have no photo credits. In contrast, the rear sleeve of some stereo copies has a photo credit to both David Gartner and Fred Hammerstein (see International Album Releases (Regular) ). | ||
Columbia KCL 2663 (USA) - detail of rear, scan by Hans Seegers (first commercial release - no photo credit, Gerd Rundel's copy shown above also has no photo credit) |
Columbia KCL 2663 (USA) - detail of rear, photocopy by Paul Shenton (second commercial release - photo credit to David Gartner only) |

Columbia KCL 2663 (USA) - mono/stereo:
Hans Seegers, Ron Kraft, Chip Ordway, Stefan Neyman, Renaud Depierreux, Justin Calderone and Sergio Mariano Romay also have copies of this mislabelled album, so it appears to have been a batch that were labelled incorrectly. Chip Ordway's copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM117277-1E, Side 2 - XSM117278-1A. Stefan Neyman also has a copy with the second release mono labels but with stereo matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM117277-1A, Side 2 - XSM117278-1G. Ron Kraft also has a copy like this, as has Renaud Depierreux, whose second release copy has stereo matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM117277-1E, Side 2 - XSM117278-1E. Both Justin Calderone and Sergio Mariano Romay have copies with these mono labels but stereo matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM117277-1A, Side 2 - XSM117278-1C. (Sergio has two copies with the same record, one in a mono sleeve, and one is a stereo sleeve, as shown.) Hans Seegers confirms this is a known error and the copies are very collectable. Scott Peters' copy has first release labels.
Ian Woodward has a Columbia US catalogue from late 1968 with a tear-off portion so dealers could order albums to stock for Christmas. The only two Dylan albums listed are Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits and John Wesley Harding, both in four stereo formats: LP, 4-track stereo, 8-track stereo and stereo reel-to-reel tape. This indicates that by late 1968 Columb8ia US had stopped promoting mono LPs.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Roger Ford, Keith Polasko, Harley ("Big Neon"), "Joe" and Gerd Rundel for information, photos and scans.
"Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits" - mono vinyl LP reissue, Sundazed/Columbia LP 5156 (USA), May 2003:
Both the front and rear sleeves have the "LP 5156" catalogue number. There is a barcode on the rear sleeve. The album comes with a reduced size version of the Milton Glazer poster (11" x 17"). The record comes in a plastic inner sleeve and has reproduction 1960s style Columbia US labels.
Thanks to Tim Dunn for the information, to Hans Seegers for the front scan, and to Franck Faugère and Sergio Mariano Romay for pictures.

|
Columbia KCL 2663 (Canada) - Side 2 scan by Henry V. Bell |
Although the design had been discontinued in the USA, the Canadian release of KCL 2663 had "GUARANTEED HIGH FIDELITY" record labels that had "PRINTED IN CAN." on the bottom. The sleeve had "LITHO IN CAN" on the spine. the album came with the Milton Glaser poster as did the US mono release. The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP-117275-1C. Side 2 - XLP-117275-1G.
Thanks to Henry V. Bell for information and scans.

CBS/Mareco KCL 2663 (Philippines) - detail
of rear with "S, scan by Manuel García Jara
Although the sleeve has Columbia logos, the record has orange labels with the CBS logo and the US catalogue number, typeface and matrix numbers. The circumference text is badly positioned on both labels. The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP-117275-1D, Side 2 - XLP-117275-1B.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
"Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits" -

For the stereo release of this album, CBS ASF 1674, which was
not released until 1972, see

"Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits" - mono vinyl LP, CBS
ALD 8035 (Rhodesia), 1967:
For the stereo release of this album, CBS ASF 1674, which was also
not released until 1972, see
International Album
Releases (Regular).
There are again images of six Dylan mono albums (the title Bringing It All Back Home is missing from the image of the album - it has just "Bob Dylan" on the front). This rear sleeve has a laminated sticker with the text "RECORD MADE IN SOUTHERN RHODESIA". The record was pressed in Rhodesia (the text "MADE IN S RHODESIA" is pressed in the vinyl in addition to the matrix numbers) with identical orange CBS labels to that of the South African release. This copy has a printing error on the Side 2 record label - the playing speed is shown as "33 1/-" instead of "33⅓". The record of the copy shown has US matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP117275-1H plus "MADE IN S RHODESIA", Side 2 - XLP117276-1G plus "MADE IN S RHODESIA".
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
"Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits" -
promo and commercial mono vinyl LPs:
CBS CL 2114 (Colombia), 1967:
Manuel García Jara says: "Until now, I always
thought that the album Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits was released only in
Mexico in the 1960s and later in Argentina and Uruguay in the 1970s, but never
in any other Latin American country. I also thought that the first Dylan album
released in Colombia was John Wesley Harding. This record breaks these
two hypotheses: as you can see, this mono album was released in Colombia in 1967
and, according to its catalogue number (CL 4114), it was published before
John Wesley Harding (CL 4128)."
CBS CL 2114 (Colombia) - spine scan by
Sergio Mariano Romay (promo and commercial
copies - just "CL (S)")
The sleeve is made of heavy cardboard. It is made of one piece folded at the spine, and the front and rear have two inserts glued on to it: there are tapes at the top and bottom to prevent the record from falling out. The front has the CBS logo with the mono catalogue (CL 4114). There is also a catalogue sticker with the text "Sonorama 01877" , showing that the album belonged to a Colombian radio station. The CBS logo on the rear has only CL (S) instead of the catalogue number, because the rear sleeve was common to many Colombian CBS albums. This rear sleeve is unique worldwide: the usual design with Dylan picture and tracklist has been replaced by the images of contemporary Colombian CBS albums making up the large letters "CL" plus the text "El mundo de los éxitos CL. Serie Internacional [The World of CL Hits. International Series]". One of these albums is The Best Of '66 with I Want You from Blonde On Blonde (see International Compilations: Various Artist Albums 1962-6). This album was released in Colombia in stereo with the title translated as Lo Mejor Del '66. There is also a small CBS stamp with the text "Disco Promocional. No Vendible [Promotional Record Not For Sale]". The spine also only has "CL (S)" instead of a catalogue number.
The record has orange CBS labels with the tracklist in English only. There are semi-removed Sonorama stickers and promo stamps on both labels, hiding the CL 4114 mono catalogue number. The record of the copy shown has US matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP117275-1H, Side 2 - XLP117276-1H. Sergio Mariano Romay has a commercial copy without the stamps and stickers. Like Manuel's copy, the record has US matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP117275-1H, Side 2 - XLP117276-1H.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Sergio Mariano Romay for information and scans.
