Elliott Murphy - "Coming Home Again" - Download: iTunes, 16 Jan 2007; CD: Last Call 3121482 (France), 26 Feb 2007/Blue Rose BLU DP 0416 (Germany); Last Call Records 312148 (USA), 13 Mar 2007; 2LP set with two bonus tracks: Blue Rose BLU LP 0416 (Germany), 15 Jan 2007:

Last Call 3121482 (France) - picture from Elliott Murphy's web-site
R-0453 Mary Ann's Garage Sale (Elliott Murphy) - Bob is rumoured to contribute backing vocals to this song by Elliott Murphy
This entry has now been moved to "Red Herrings"!

This story appeared in "Expecting Rain" in early Mar 2007. Elliott Murphy is an American musician based in France, and the album was recorded at Studio Franklin, Le Havre, France, from 23 Oct 2006. Bob was touring in the USA until 20 Nov 2006, so his appearance is unlikely. He is not included in the credits for this track and Arie de Reus is convinced the performance is of Elliott Murphy duetting with himself! Unless you're an Elliott Murphy fan, you are advised to listen to the track online before purchasing this album.

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for information and picture, to Tim Dunn for details of the US release and to Arie de Reus for the final verdict.

"Thunder On The Mountain" - two-track promo CD-R single, Sony BMG/Columbia (no catalogue number) (UK), Feb 2007:

ThunderUKPromoFront.JPG (20808 bytes)
Front of insert -
scan by Gerd Rundel
This CD-R single contains two versions of this track from Modern Times, the full album version (5:55) and a radio edit (3:59). It comes in a plastic wallet with a paper insert, blank on the reverse. There is a sticker on the plastic wallet giving UK promotional information. For a Sony BMG Irish promo CD with just the album version, see International Singles 2000s.

R-0760-2 Thunder On The Mountain - edited version of track (3:59) from Modern Times

For a mainland Europe glass mastered CD version of this single in a CD single jewel case, see 2006. For a video viewable at the Sony Music Box web-site with a different edit and an iTunes UK download of this radio edit, see Online Performances (Other). In the video version, the "art of love/fit me like a glove" verse is missing; in this radio edit version, it is present but the later "tough sons of bitches/orphanages" verse is cut out.

Columbia/Sony Music Soundtrax 82876 89625 2 (USA) - front sticker (both versions)

The front insert of my copy is a single sheet folded into four. Izidio Agostinho Filho has a copy bought from Amazon in the USA with the same catalogue number, CD and front sticker as mine but with an 8-page stapled booklet as the front insert and a different track selection listed on both front and rear inserts! The inserts are dated 2006, so this must be the 2006 version of the soundtrack that was replaced by my version, perhaps before a CD was pressed. Are there any CDs in existence with the 2006 track list? My inserts are dated 2007. Tracks by Johnny Rivers and Shawn Colvin were replaced by tracks by Madeleine Peyroux and Liza Minnelli and the track order changed.

"Hero Blues" - mono single-sided 10" acetate, Columbia (no catalogue number) (USA), surfaced Jul 2007:

Picture found on eBay by Jean-Pol Hiernaux
R-0390-3 Hero Blues - mono out-take from The Times They Are A-Changin' recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 12 Aug 1963 (take 1 or 3), surfaced in 2007 on an unreleased Columbia acetate (3:38), lyrics on bobdylan.com here

The blank side of the acetate has a stamp of "ALLIED New York USA". This is again the version with Bob on piano (CO78980). The Witmark demo version which also circulates unofficially has Bob on guitar, as do the out-takes around 3:06 in length from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, on 6 Dec 1962 (CO77020).

This version also appeared on early Columbia acetates of the album, see 1964, and on the "Goldmine" acetates in 1980. For this recording with fake applause added from a 1972-80 Fantasy acetate (R-0792), see 1964.

Picture found on eBay by Jean-Pol Hiernaux (reverse)

The out-takes from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, on 6 Dec 1962, appeared on the very limited Sony Music Europe 4CD-R set The 50th Anniversary Collection, see 2012. Take 3 from 12 Aug 1963 appeared on the equally limited Columbia/Legacy Europe 6LP set The 50th Anniversary Collection 1963, see 2013, and is in fact this version.

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for finding this on eBay.

R-0837 I'm Not There [Bob Dylan/The Band] - out-take from The Basement Tapes, recorded at Big Pink, Saugerties, New York State, Jun-Oct 1967 (5:13)

R-0149-8 Trouble In Mind - Slow Train Coming out-take (4:17), B-side of 1979 Columbia 7" singles with one verse omitted, lyrics on bobdylan.com here. For original releases, see 1979.

Paul S. Levine has downloaded it and found the running time is not 4:17 but 4:54. The full version is 5:11 (R-0150, see 1979). The German compilation Pure Dylan (2011) does have the full version! This song was released in slightly edited form (4:50) on Disc 3 of the 8CD+DVD set The Bootleg Series Vol. 13 - Trouble No More 1979-1981 (Deluxe Edition), 3 Nov 2017, so this may be the first appearance of that edit. R-0149 and R-0150 remain rarities.

The CD-Rs give the Japanese release date as "2007/12/5" (5 Dec 2007), which must have been put back because the press kit is dated "2007/12/19" (19 Dec 2007).

"Bob Dylan Live At The Newport Folk Festival" - radio station CD-Rs, Columbia (no catalogue numbers) (USA), Oct/Dec 2007:

Front scan by Mark Webster (54:00 version)
The 54:00 commercial radio station CD-R has nine audio performances from the 2007 DVD release The Other Side Of The Mirror: Bob Dylan Live At The Newport Folk Festival 1963-1965, see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 4. The show is hosted by Rita Houston.
Rear insert scan by Mark Webster (54:00 version)

CD-R scan by Gerd Rundel (54:00 version)

The performances on the 54:00 CD-R are:

R-0819-3 Talkin' World War III Blues - live, Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI, 26 Jul 1963 (evening concert), part of which also appeared on the 2005 No Direction Home DVD (see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 3)

R-0818-2 Blowin' In The Wind - recorded live with Joan Baez and Peter, Paul and Mary, Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI, 26 Jul 1963 (evening concert)
Thanks to Larry Crum for info that this is in mono, but with a different mix from the mono version originally released on the Vanguard album The Newport Folk Festival - 1963: The Evening Concerts Vol. 1 (R-0022M, see 1964). Bob's vocal has been mixed upwards to become more prominent.

R-0252-2 It Ain't Me, Babe - recorded live with Joan Baez, Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI, 24 Jul 1964 (evening performance - Joan's set), from the Joan Baez Vanguard CD Live At Newport, 1997

R-0717-3 Mr. Tambourine Man - live, Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI, 24 Jul 1964 (afternoon workshop), from the special features section of the DVD release of the 2005 Columbia Martin Scorsese documentary No Direction Home, see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 3 (not on the soundtrack album)

R-0672-2 Chimes Of Freedom - live, Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI, 26 Jul 1964 (evening performance - Bob's set), audio released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 7 - No Direction Home: The Soundtrack, Sep 2005
Thanks to Larry Crum for information that this performance has a false start, which is missing from the No Direction Home CD, and to Edwin Haast for pointing out that a verse is missing from this performance. I have therefore allocated this version an R-number.

R-0300    Maggie's Farm - recorded live with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band at the Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI, 25 Jul 1965, previously released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 7 - No Direction Home: The Soundtrack, Sep 2005

R-0301-3 Like A Rolling Stone - live with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI, 25 Jul 1965 (evening concert), previously appeared on a 1991 Italian CD Bob Dylan 1 accompanying an issue of Il Dizionario del Rock (The Dictionary of Rock) - a series of magazines in the early 1990s (see Questionable Releases), and on the 1999 TV series DVD release, The 60s, see VHS & DVD 1995-99

R-0824-2 Love Minus Zero/No Limit - live, Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI, 24 Jul 1965 (afternoon workshop)

R-0303-2 It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (solo acoustic) - live, Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI, 25 Jul 1965 (evening concert)

Paul S. Levine has a copy of the one hour CD-R distributed to PBS radio stations which do not have adverts. This has some additional commentary and an extra performance, second after Talkin' World War III Blues:

Front scan by Paul S. Levine (one hour version)
R-0311M-6 With God On Our Side - live with Joan Baez, Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI, 27 Jul 1963 (morning workshop). This is not previously unreleased as first thought, but is now known to have been originally released on the Vanguard album Newport Broadside: Topical Songs At The Newport Folk Festival 1963, see 1964. That performance is again not from 26 Jul 1963 (afternoon workshop) as indicated in the booklet, but from the following morning's workshop as R-0817 above.
Thanks to Larry Crum for information that this excerpt is in mono and to Bob Stacy for supplying the date correction.

CD-R scan by Paul S. Levine (one hour version)

CD-R scan by Gerd Rundel (Dec 2007 version)

Gerd Rundel also has a different CD-R, from US radio network Westwood One, unfortunately without a cue sheet or other documentation. It is dated to be broadcast during the period of 12-24 Dec 2007. I don't know if this is the 54 min or one hour version.

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux, Larry Crum, Anthony Pignataro, Peter Stone Brown, Bob Stacy, Mark Webster, Gerd Rundel and Paul S. Levine for information and scans.

ClassicsLiveUSFront.jpg (19234 bytes)
Columbia/Legacy 88697 21150 2 (USA) - front scan by Hans Seegers

This exclusive compilation with two rarities was given away by public service broadcasters in the USA when you pledged money to support them in 2008 by buying albums such as the 2007 Dylan compilation for an inflated price of $75 for the single CD or $150 for the 3CD set. For example, see the Detroit Public TV site here The reverse of the rear insert (under the clear CD tray) has a fascinating collage of Bob Dylan ticket stubs.
