R-0600 Honest With Me - radio edit (4:46) of album track from "Love And Theft"
The two-track CD-R single, released for the 2002 Grammy Awards, has no catalogue number and comes in a thin CD single jewel case. It has a folded insert, blank on the inside. The other track is the album version of Honest With Me (5:49). The CD-R is silver - the colours are reflections from the copier.
The CD-R insert text concerns the nomination of "Love And Theft" for three Grammy Awards. For a Grammy Awards compilation album with the complete album version of Honest With Me, see International Album Releases (Various Artist Compilations) 2002.
The second one-track promo CD-R from Sony Music Studios containing the R-0600 4:46 edit of Honest With Me is dated "2/7/02". It comes in a slimline CD single jewel case with a single-sided paper insert.
Thanks to Anthony Pignataro for finding this item on eBay and to Pachi Becerril and Gerd Rundel for information and scans.
Various Artists - "This Land Is Your Land: Songs Of Freedom" - compilation CDs: Vanguard 79710 (USA)/Vanguard VCD 79710-2 (Germany), 5 Feb 2002:
R-0253-2 With God On Our Side - with Joan Baez, recorded live at the evening concert at the Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI, 26 Jul 1964, previously released on the Vanguard CD Joan Baez Live At Newport, see 1997
This appearance is slightly shorter than the Joan Baez Live At Newport track, but the only difference is crowd noise cut from the end of the track so it hasn't been allocated a new R-number. This album also contains a previously unreleased performance of The Times They Are A-Changin' by Joan Baez, and Judy Collins singing Blowin' In The Wind. The German release was manufactured by ZYX Music.
For the second album in this Vanguard series, Let Freedom Sing: This Land Is Your Land II, see 2003.
Thanks to Tim Dunn for the information and for checking the performances, and thanks to Jack from Canada and Peter Oudejans for scans.

Theft", Sony Records International SBCI 80001 (Japan), Mar 2002:
As noted in 2001 there was no Limited

in Japan. The regular edition had a sticker inviting purchasers to send off a postcard to Sony Japan for
the chance to win one of 2000 copies of the bonus disc or other
"Dylan goods". This bonus disc did not actually arrive at the
homes of the lucky winners until March 2002! Thanks to Toyohiko Tejima and Hans

R-0514-2 I Was Young When I Left Home
(traditional) - from the "Minnesota Hotel Tape", Minneapolis, MN, 22 Dec 1961,
previously appeared on a UK Emidisc test pressing in the 1960s, see
Questionable Releases, now released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 7: No
Direction Home, Sep 2005, in a version with a spoken intro, so R-0514 remains
a rarity. |

R-0515-2 The Times They Are A-Changin' - alternate take recorded Columbia Studios, New York, 23 Oct 1963, previously unreleased
The inside of the booklet is very interesting, as it gives a history of I Was Young When I Left Home and the "Minnesota Hotel Tape". The "Minnesota Hotel" was actually Bonnie Beecher's apartment in Minneapolis, MN, so-called because she allowed so many people to stay there for free! (Bonnie Beecher is now Jaharana Romney, and is married to Hugh "Wavy Gravy" Romney, the hippie political activist.) On the right-hand side is a full 26-track listing of this recording, of which only Hard Times In New York Town is available on a regular Dylan album (The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3, 1991). Wade In The Water (R-0240) from this tape was released in 2001 on the Japanese live compilation Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances, see 2001
In The Evening and Long John from this session previously appeared on a UK Emidisc test pressing in the 1960s, see Questionable Releases
Thanks to Toyohiko Tejima for information and scans. Thanks to Gerd Rundel for finding a photo of a Sony Japan promo cassette on eBay.

a 6:16 version called Minellos (Part 2).

Rubin Steiner - "Wunderbar 3", Bluebird Records 74321-95105-2 (USA). 2002:

The Grateful Dead - "Postcards Of The Hanging: The Grateful Dead Perform The Songs Of Bob Dylan" - 2CD Limited Edition, BMG/Arista GDCD 4069/7822-14069-2 (USA), 19 Mar 2002:

R-0544 Man Of Peace
- recorded with the Grateful Dead during
rehearsals at Club Front, San Rafael, CA, 9 Jun 1987, previously
unreleased This track is one of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, see Online Performances (Other). The copy shown is the special Limited Edition of this album (GDCD 4069) with a bonus disc (GDCD 4069A) containing two more Dylan covers by the Dead. However, as far as I can see the only differences between this and the regular release are the front sticker and the 2CD tray with the extra disc. The other artwork doesn't mention the bonus disc. |

This 4CD Expanded Edition contains 54 tracks, 24 of which are newly released, all
remastered by Robbie Robertson. For the original Warner Bros 3LP 30-track set (later 2CDs), see 1978.
At the same time, the original 30-track set, again remastered by Robbie
Robertson, was reissued by Rhino on DVD-A (audio-only
DVD in Dolby 5.1 surround sound), see below, and also as a heavyweight 180gm
vinyl 3LP set and 2CD set, for both also see 1978.
All reissues of the 30-track set are also in 1978,
all releases of the 54-track set are here. For details of the original 1978 film see
VHS & DVD 1970s, for details of the 2002 Expanded Edition see
VHS & DVD 2000s Part 1. Thanks to Larry
Crum for pointing out that all the Dylan tracks have been remixed and both
R-0143 and R-0144 are longer than the versions on the 1978 3LP set (and those in
both the 1978 and 2002 versions of the film) with longer instrumental breaks.

Warner Bros/Rhino R2 73925 (USA) - 30-track 2CD release front of slipcase, scan by Jack from Canada (see 1978) |
Stuart Moore's Australian copy has discs manufactured in Germany, so is probably the European release.
In answer to queries, this 4CD boxed set still does not contain the complete concert - Georgia On My Mind performed by The Band is missing, and King Harvest by The Band appears in a performance from the rehearsal, not the concert performance itself. Also, the order of the concert is altered considerably. The Band played a long set on their own, then a set with guests one after the other, then a shorter set on their own again. Finally Bob came on for his set with The Band, followed by the finale. In this release the songs with guests other than Bob are misleadingly sequenced throughout the discs as they were on the original 1978 release.
In Feb 2003 Rhino also reissued the original 1978 release of The Last Waltz as a 2CD set and also as a 30-track Limited Edition 3LP 180gm vinyl boxed set. The material reproduces the original album, but is taken from the remastered 4CD 54-track release above. As it's the same format as the 1978 release, for full details see 1978.
Warner Bros/Rhino Records R2 78278 (USA), 2002 (second release):
Later in 2002 the US 4CD set was released in smaller packaging: a double-width jewel case holding the four CDs and a smaller booklet inside a card slipcase. The CDs look the same as above.

This CD single was given away with purchases of "Love And Theft" and other
selected Dylan titles by HMV UK, May 2002. Thanks to Andreas Volkert for the
information this CD was also available at the FNAC record shop in Brussels free
with the European The Essential Bob Dylan (see 2001),
and therefore probably at all the FNAC stores in France/Belgium. I'm also told
this item was given away with the regular release of "Love And Theft"
in South Africa. The CD was made in Austria.

(This performance date is given incorrectly as "19 Feb 1998",
Bob appeared in Cincinnati, OH, that night but didn't perform Blind Willie McTell! This repeats a
previous misdating, as the date was wrongly given as "Feb
1998" on the Love Sick singles, although it was correct as "Aug

This promo single was also released in the UK in a different card sleeve identical to that of the Aug 2002 Canadian release below, thanks to Ole Lien for information and scans. The CD is exactly the same. Thanks to Tom Willems for the information that this CD was also available in Holland - he says "There was a coupon in a newspaper, with this coupon you could get Live & Rare or Live & Rare 2 for free if you bought The Essential Bob Dylan. that was one way to get it. This film is based on the novels by Rebecca Wells, and like O Brother, Where Art Thou?, has a soundtrack mixing original recordings with re-recordings of period songs by modern artists, or in Bob's case an original song in "period" style. Other artists participating are Macy Gray, Lauryn Hill, Alison Krauss, Tony Bennett, Jimmy Reed and Slim Harpo with Got Love If You Want It - for Bob's version see 1988. The soundtrack is produced by T-Bone Burnett (who also produced O Brother, Where Art Thou?) and original music in the film is by David Mansfield, both veteran colleagues of Bob. Thanks to Peter Gilmer for release information and to Joy Munsey for researching the song. For more information see .
For a CD-R single with R-0552 submitted for an Academy Award nomination in Feb 2003, see 2003.
What purported to be an alternate take of Waitin' For You to the version on this soundtrack album appeared on the Sony Music Bob Dylan Custom Mix CD web-site, Apr 2003, see Online Performances (bobdylan.com). However, it was the same version as R-0552.
The US promo release comes in a digipak with a folded card cover. The German promo shown is on Columbia in a thin jewel case and has no catalogue number. The reverse of the front insert is in German. The film title is misspelled "Devine Secrets" on the CD itself. The UK promo CD-R comes in a clear plastic wallet with a folded white insert. The French promo copy (also made in Germany) comes in a standard jewel case with a large French language sticker. The English language sticker was used Europe-wide. The rear insert of the French promo is similar to the reverse of the US digipak.
The US promo copy, also DMZ/Columbia/Sony Music Soundtrax CK 86534, has the commercial packaging with a blue/white promo sticker covering the barcode.

This set, originally released in the USA in 2001, was released in Canada to mark Bob's Canadian summer tour, Aug 2002, and has the three Greatest Hits titles plus a bonus disc which is reported on the cover to be the same as the Things have Changed: Live & Unreleased "red promo", given away in the USA in May 2001 (see 2001). Canada had a single "Live & Rare" CDNEK 1570 release in 2001 which was the same as the Things Have Changed: Live & Unreleased "blue promo", so this would have been new to them. However, both Mary Lewis in Canada and Peter Pearson in the UK have found their copies do not contain this disc! They have instead as the bonus CD the Canadian version of the "blue promo CD", Columbia CDNEK 1570 (see 2001), this time in a card sleeve instead of a jewel case. (The CD picture is in the 2001 entry.) The US release of this boxed set also contained the "blue promo CD", again see 2001. The tracklisting of the "blue promo" is as below: |
R-0469-9 Things Have Changed
- Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, 25 Sep 2000, from the Japanese live compilation Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty-Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances,
see 2001
As well as on the Columbia US "red" and "blue" promo CD
singles Things Have Changed Live & Unreleased, and the European and
Canadian promo CD singles Live & Rare (for all of these see 2001),
this performance is on the Columbia UK promo CD The Voice Of Every

on the Columbia UK compilation Brit Awards 2002: Album Of The
Year (see above),
and on the revised released of the Japanese 2CD compilation Dylan Ga

R-0271-7 Roving Gambler (traditional) - El Rey Theater, Los Angeles, 17 Dec 1997, originally included on the 1998 European Love Sick CD singles, see 1998
If anyone actually has a copy of this boxed set with the "red promo", please let me know!
The front sticker advertises the Canadian tour dates in Aug 2002. There is also included what appears to be the promo leaflet from the 2001 US release of this set - it advertises the "Love And Theft" CD and the US Arena Tour starting 5 Oct 2001.

R-0593 Knockin' On Heaven's Door - overdubbed version on charity album
Originally reported as a new recording, this is actually the album version from Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid with overdubbing from a chorus of girls from the Sabera Foundation, Calcutta, India, plus local musicians.
The Sabera Foundation is a Spanish charity that raises funds for homeless street children in India, and is supported by film stars Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz. Apparently many of the songs were recorded at the Hollywood home of Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith. Other artists appearing include Sting, Elton John and Ricky Martin.

Thanks to Darren Tucker for details of the Australian release, which has a clear front sticker advertising 22 previously unreleased tracks and the bonus DVD. Both the Australian CDs and the bonus DVD have the same number, Columbia 5101403000. Note the text on the Australian release is a darker orange than the US or UK releases. Thanks also to Hervé from France for a photo of a promo of the Australian Limited Edition which is the same as shown. Thanks to Jack from Canada for scans of the Canadian Limited Edition - the bonus DVD in the Canadian Limited Edition was made in the USA.
The two performances on film on the bonus DVD are:
R-0245-3 Tangled Up In Blue (video) - live, Boston, MA, 21 Nov 1975 (evening show), from Renaldo & Clara (see VHS & DVD 1970s) This video previously appeared in the 1998 video Rolling Stone: 20 Years Of Rock 'N' Roll (see VHS & DVD 1990s Part 2), and the CD+ version of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 3 (see 1995)
R-0596
Isis (Bob Dylan/Jacques Levy) (video) -
live, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975, from Renaldo
&
Clara (see VHS & DVD 1970s), edited performance (4:10), previously unreleased
Thanks to Larry Crum for pointing out the audio part of this is a new mix and an
edit of R-0533, see below.
These are complemented by an audio performance in Dolby 5.1 sound:
R-0533 Isis (Bob Dylan/Jacques Levy)
(audio) -
live, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975,
as above but complete performance (5:21), remix of original complete stereo audio
performance released on 4 Songs From "Renaldo &
Clara" (see 1978), on US, Dutch and
Italian 7" Jokerman
singles (see 1984),
and Biograph (see 1985)
Thanks to Larry Crum for pointing this out.
I thought initially the release of this album disqualified one performance from the Searching For A Gem list:
R-0137 It Ain't Me, Babe - live with the Rolling Thunder Revue, Harvard Square Theatre, Cambridge, MA, 20 Nov 1975
This performance was originally released on the 1978 US Columbia promo 12" EP 4 Songs From "Renaldo & Clara" (see 1978). It also appeared on the Japanese promo CD Mr. D's Collection #3 (see 1993), European Dignity CD singles (see 1995), and the Japanese live compilation CD Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances (see 2001)
Larry Crum has now pointed out the version here is a remix of that performance, so R-0137 remains a rarity.
Another song from these four shows which has already appeared officially but is sadly not included in this set is:
R-0138 Never Let Me Go (Joseph
C. Scott) - live duet with Joan Baez from The
Forum, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975, from the Columbia
promo 12" EP 4 Songs From "Renaldo & Clara"
(see 1978), also released on the 1993
Japanese promo CD Mr. D's Collection # 3 (see
1993)
R-0138 is now included on the 14CD boxed set The Rolling Thunder Revue: The Live 1975 Recordings, 2019.
Peter van der Kerk informs me that when he bought his copy of the Limited Edition in an independent record shop in Holland, he received free copies of the promotional CD singles Live & Rare (see 2001) and Live & Rare 2 (see 2002)! I haven't heard of this anywhere else, so it may be a promotion from that shop only.
Thanks to Gerd Rundel, Jack from Canada, Darren Tucker and Wil Gielen for information and scans.
"The Bootleg Series
Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue" - 3LP boxed
set with bonus 7" single,
Classic Records/Columbia/Legacy
C2K 87047-1 (USA), 7
Nov 2003:
C2K-87047-1-Q is the 200gm vinyl version ($100) and C2K-87047-1-R
is the 140gm vinyl version ($60).
This luxury boxed set contains a 70 page 12" x 12" booklet, reproductions of original Rolling Thunder Revue handbills and posters, and a bonus 7" blue vinyl single containing the live versions of Tangled Up In Blue and Isis.
Hans Seegers says: "The CD version of Tangled Up In Blue (Boston Music Hall, 21 Nov 1975, evening show) starts simply with guitar and singing, time 4:40. The 7” single performance starts with Dylan's guitar. Dylan coughs twice, then someone in the audience asks for Masters of War, Dylan answers with "What!". While he is still playing the intro to Tangled Up In Blue he asks "Larry, are you still there?" and then starts the song (time 4:53). So, the important question now is - in which show did he ask for Larry?" (Presumably Larry Sloman.) Thanks to Les Kokay's booklet "Sounds of the Underground: A Collector's Guide to the Rolling Thunder Revue 1975-1976" for positively identifying the call for Larry as having taken place at the Boston evening show.
R-0596-2
Isis (Bob Dylan/Jacques Levy)
(Alternate Live Version) - Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975, from Renaldo
&
Clara (see VHS & DVD 1970s), edited performance (4:10)
Thanks to Larry Crum for pointing out this is an edit of the audio part of
R-0533, see above.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Franck Faugere, Sonny Boy McFitzson and Gerd Rundel for information and scans of this vinyl edition. Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for information that this 3LP set was reissued on vinyl in Europe on 7 Jun 2019.
