This second part of the 1990s list collects non-album song performances and interviews by Bob Dylan on VHS video and DVD (and laserdisc where I have information) from 1995 to 1999. I would be grateful for any additional information on these items and other material to place here. Video material included on CD-ROMs or CD Plus discs is still in the main directory in the appropriate part. For 1990s films with Dylan album tracks, see VHS & DVD: Films with Dylan Album Tracks 1990s.
Films are listed by date of original appearance (in theatres or on TV), not when the VHS video or DVD came out, often some years later. This page does not include songs from regular albums that appear in films or videos without performance footage, nor do I include music videos of standard album tracks - for a full Dylan filmography, see "Expecting Rain" or "TV Talkin'"
For informed discussion of all Bob's screen appearances, see C.P. Lee's well-received book "Like A Bullet Of Light ".
Thanks to Jean-Pierre Mercier for laserdisc details and catalogue numbers and Michel Pomarede for scans. Thanks also to Larry Crum for checking these entries against his own collection, "Positively Bob Dylan" by Michael Krogsgaard, "Bob Dylan on Video" (article in "Record Collector" magazine, Sep 1992), and several other sources. All scans that aren't credited are from my own collection or www.amazon.com
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

R-0437-2 Desolation Row - 4:03 edit of the standard album version from Highway 61 Revisited
Although Bob did not appear at the 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival, Desolation Row is included both in the film (playing over the end credits) and on the soundtrack album. For the explanation, see the comments on the soundtrack album in 1995.
This film is now out of print on VHS cassette. For Murray Lerner's earlier "Festival!" film, see VHS & DVD 1960s.

R-0300 Maggie's Farm - recorded live with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band at the Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI, 25 Jul 1965, now released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 7: No Direction Home, Sep 2005 Thanks for Fred Muller for confirming the material is indeed from Murray Lerner's 1967 "Festival!" movie (see VHS & DVD 1960s) including scenes of Bob at the soundcheck for Maggie's Farm and performing it live at the festival. The three electric performances from that day, R-0300-302, were released on a 1991 Italian CD Bob Dylan 1 accompanying an issue of Il Dizionario del Rock (The Dictionary of Rock) - a series of magazines in the early 1990s, see Questionable Releases. Fred Muller adds: "There are some audio recordings played over stills and montages (e.g. Bob announcing the title of his first LP!), black-and-white film of him introducing "That's Alright Ma" with a "ho-ho-ho"* and more monochrome film (sources not given on-screen), plus getting set up at Newport in '65 (polka-dot shirt) and then film of him doing some of "Maggie's Farm", identified as coming from this show, but he's now wearing a leather jacket and it's dark. Intercut with studio interview clips with the likes of Bono (someone always manages to find him!), Springsteen, Chrissie Hynde, the Newport promoter etc. echo yes, excerpts from the Dec 65 San Francisco interview too (e.g. "I'm just a song and dance man".) There's also some footage from '86 with Tom Petty doing "Like a Rolling Stone" (this is from the Gaylene Preston film, shot in Sydney**) and footage from the 1992 30th anniversary bash at Madison Square Gardens with "Duck" Dunn, Steve Cropper, McGuinn, Clapton, etc. etc. on stage.***" Fred subsequently clarified that Bob was wearing the polka dot shirt in the afternoon and the leather jacket at night. "The stills and some film seem to have been taken around 2pm when he did a three-song rehearsal, and the remainder of the Time-Life footage was taken at his appearance proper, around 10pm." * From Don't Look Back (see VHS & DVD 1960s) **Hard to Handle (see VHS & DVD 1980s) *** 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration (see VHS & DVD 1990s Part 1) Jack from Canada reports the episode in detail as including excerpts from: 1. On The Road Again - audio from Bringing It All Back Home 2. It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (live) - audio and film footage from Don't Look Back (see VHS & DVD 1960s) 3. Talkin' New York - audio from Bob Dylan 4. The Times They Are A-Changin' (live) - audio and film footage from Don't Look Back (see VHS & DVD 1960s) 5. Maggie's Farm (live) - audio and film footage from Festival! (see VHS & DVD 1960s) 6. Like A Rolling Stone - audio from Highway 61 Revisited 7. Like A Rolling Stone (live) - audio and film footage from Hard To Handle (see VHS & DVD 1980s) 8. My Back Pages (live) - audio and film footage from The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration (see VHS & DVD 1990s Part 1) As well as other footage from Don't Look Back and Festival! it also includes footage from Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid (see VHS & DVD 1970s) and the San Francisco Press Conference, 3 Dec 1965, and the Los Angeles Press Conference, 16 Dec 1965 (see Interviews With Bob). Thanks to Alexandre Froemming for the Brazilian release of this video from Coleções Caras in association with Time-Life. The video is in the original English with Portuguese subtitles. The accompanying magazine has a biography of Bob in Portuguese. Thanks to Freddy Ordoñez Araque for finding the US DVD boxed set and to Jack from Canada for the scans. There was also a 1995 PBS TV series called The History Of Rock 'N' Roll where the second VHS cassette has two episodes: Part 3: "Shakespeare's In The Alley"/Part 4: "Respect". Information from Paul Pearson: "This WGBH series surveys the history of rock and roll, from Little Richard to rap. "Shakespeare's in the Alley" explains the impact of Bob Dylan, the Beatles and "folk rock " on rock and roll. Produced, directed and written by Vicky Bippart and Daniel McCabe. "Respect" describes how black gospel music was transformed by Motown, Stax Records, Aretha Franklin and others into a sound for all Americans - until the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Produced, directed and written by David Espar." Scans of this VHS cassette required! Thanks to Harold Lepidus for finding the 9DVD Time-Life 2009 set The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Live. This is also available in a 14DVD deluxe version that includes the 5DVD set The History Of Rock 'n' Roll. For this, see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 4. |

- additional track (recorded 17 Nov
1994) The UK release is region-free and comes with minimal packaging and no extras of any kind. The omission of I Want You (see above) is especially disappointing for Dylan fans. Thanks to Michael Smith for reminding me that this release has been remixed in 5.1 surround sound. Thanks to Gil Lamont and Sergio Mariano Romay for the scans of the US DVD - the sticker (on Gil's copy only) proclaims "4 performances not included in the original MTV broadcast" while failing to mention that this release still only has the same material as the 1995 VHS release! The US DVD has an insert advertising The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall - see International Album Releases (Regular). It occurs on disc 4 chapter 2 where the Beatles talk about meeting Dylan in America. The segment starts with about a 5 second clip of The Times They Are A-Changin', followed a few minutes later with about 20 seconds of A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall and then at the end of the segment a further 10 seconds of The Times They Are A-Changin'." 1996 and then as three volumes in 1998. It was also released as a three

edited. Several of the German episodes have different titles from the UK
volumes. The episode with Dylan content is #2 (or #3 depending upon which version of the video set you have - Episode 2 "Be My Baby" is missing from some sets, but has no Dylan content), is subtitled in the UK "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n Roll Star" (the equivalent German volume is subtitled "A Hard Day's Night - die Rock-Poeten"). This episode is included in Vol. 1 of the 1998 release. |

R-0666-2 Only A Pawn In Their Game - recorded live, Civil Rights Rally, Silas Magee's Farm, Greenwood, MS, 6 Jul 1963 (excerpt), from Don't Look Back, see VHS & DVD 1960s
Other excerpts from Don't Look Back
R-0382-2 With God On Our Side - film with Dylan in a
dark polo neck sweater with jacket and harmonica holder, with a fake backdrop of
a farm scene.
Thanks to Fred Muller for the information that: "I
think that this song may come from the 12 May 1964 BBC TV "Tonight"
programme. The picture on the left is taken from this performance. See

R-0319-6 I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met) - recorded
with the Hawks at Edinburgh, Scotland, 20 May 1966, from the unreleased
documentary Eat The Document,
see
VHS & DVD 1960s
A contributor thinks this
actually is from Cardiff, Wales, 11 May 1966. "This is the wild version, with
Bob’s hands flying, first shown in Eat the Document." Larry Crum
agrees!
R-0668-2 Ballad Of A Thin Man - recorded with the
Hawks, May 1966, from the unreleased documentary Eat The Document,
see
VHS & DVD 1960s
Larry Crum says this performance is made up of
two parts, neither of which are from Glasgow 19 May 1966, as previously
attributed. He says: "It is fairly obvious they are recorded at different
venues if you look at the microphone setup. The first part (the intro and first
verse) is Newcastle 21 May 1966 and the second part (the last chorus and the
end) is Edinburgh 20 May 1966." This means that the Glasgow 1966 performance
from the Columbia/Legacy
USA/Europe
36CD set
The Live 1966 Recordings, Nov
2016,
is no longer listed as R-0668!
Also from Don’t Look Back, when Bob is on the train and an English girl asks "Are you going to sing The Times They Are A-Changin'" plus Bob in front of a music shop with guitars. Plays last verse of The Girl I Left Behind in the opening.
Other Dylan content:
Still studio pics with John Hammond (soundtrack has part of an interview in which Bob says he's 20 years old and gives the title of his yet-to-be-released first LP)
Still outdoor pics with Albert Grossman - Dylan in shades and polka-dot shirt;
Interviewees include Joan Baez, Peter Yarrow, Roger McGuinn (explaining how Mr Tambourine evolved into a song), Al Aronowitz, Allen Ginsberg, Sonny Bono and Robbie Robertson.
Also included is monochrome film of Peter, Paul & Mary performing If I Had a Hammer and Blowin' In The Wind. The episode includes The Byrds performing All I Really Want To Do plus excerpts of-it Ain't Me, Babe by The Turtles and Just Like A Woman by Manfred Mann.

This documentary film by Chuck Workman about the American Beat writers from the 1940s to the 1960s was released in conjunction with "The Rolling Stone Book of the Beats", edited by Holly George-Warren, and features performance footage by Bob. Larry Crum has provided the details:
1) An excerpt from "Don't Look Back" (see VHS & DVD 1960s) with Dylan strumming his guitar and responding to the questions from science student, Terry Ellis "What is your attitude towards life? When you meet someone what is your attitude towards them?" with "I don't like them".
2) Knocking on Heaven's Door from "Renaldo & Clara" - the film is listed in the credits at the end of "The Source" (see VHS & DVD 1970s) . About 2:30 of the audio of the song is used as background for interviews but only a few seconds of the video of the performance is actually shown. (This is the 20 Nov 1975 performance included in The Bootleg Series Vol. 5: Live 1975.)
3) Dylan and Ginsberg at Kerouac's grave. Dylan says "I wanna be in an unmarked grave." (from "Renaldo and Clara" also).
There are also dramatised sections in which Johnny Depp, John Turturro, and Dennis Hopper portray Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William S. Burroughs respectively.
The 2018 DVD release included an insert with a download code. The rear of the DVD case insert and the DVD itself are both dated 1996.

Thanks to Thomas Michalzik for all the following information about the German DVD release of The '60s - this Region 2 DVD was released in Germany by e-m-s with German liner notes. It has dubbed German audio in Dolby Digital 5.1, English audio in Dolby Digital 2.0, plus optional German sub-titles for the English version. As far as I know it has not been released in the UK, but UK residents could get it online from somewhere like www.amazon.de .
Extras in the German edition include additional information on culture, politics, sports, music, and science of the '60s, bio- and filmographies of the main actors, and trailers.
