This new page collects non-album song performances and interviews by Bob Dylan on DVD from 2010 onwards. I would be grateful for any additional information on these items and other material to place here. Video material included on CD-ROMs or CD Plus discs is still in the main directory in the appropriate part. Unauthorised documentaries or compilations of performance footage are now included in Questionable Video. For 2010 onwards films with Dylan album tracks, see VHS & DVD: Films with Dylan Album Tracks 2010s.

Films are listed by date of original appearance (in theatres or on TV), not when the VHS video or DVD came out, often some years later. This page does not include songs from regular albums that appear in films or videos without performance footage, nor do I include music videos of standard album tracks - for a full Dylan filmography, see "Expecting Rain" or "TV Talkin'"

For informed discussion of all Bob's screen appearances, see C.P. Lee's well-received book "Like A Bullet Of Light ".

Thanks to Jean-Pierre Mercier for laserdisc details and catalogue numbers and Michel Pomarede for scans. Thanks also to Larry Crum for checking these entries against his own collection, "Positively Bob Dylan" by Michael Krogsgaard, "Bob Dylan on Video" (article in "Record Collector" magazine, Sep 1992), and several other sources. All scans that aren't credited are from my own collection or www.amazon.com.

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Fight the much-hated artificial and anti-consumer DVD Region system by making your PC DVD drive and software or your stand-alone DVD player region-free! For more information, see Inmatrix . Everyone can play all CDs worldwide, and it should be the same for DVDs! Also see DVD Codes .

Some studios are fortunately realising that they can maximise sales of individual DVD releases by making them region-free instead of having to manufacture multiple region-specific copies- click on the picture on the right to see the text.

When Blu-ray titles were originally released they were region-free, but now they are also region-encoded, with North and South America as Region A, Europe/Australasia/Africa as Region B and Central Asia including China as Region C. This is a very retrograde step!

Revised: 07 January, 2024.

"Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune" - documentary film released in the USA 5 Jan 2011, DVD release: First Run Features 7 20229 91474 1 (USA), 19 Jul 2011:

First Run Features 7 20229 91474 1 (USA) - DVD front scan by Jack from Canada

This film had its theatrical release on 5 Jan 2011 at IFC Center, New York City. The American television premiere was on PBS, 23 Jan 2012, as part of the network's "American Masters" series.

Tim Dunn says: "Of primary importance is a ca. 59 second audio clip of Blowin' In The Wind from the Friends Of Chile Benefit "An Evening With Salvador Allende," 9 May 1974, at the Felt Forum, Madison Square Garden. The audio, marred by voiceovers, is accompanied by onstage photographs of the performance by Dylan, Ochs, Dave Van Ronk, Pete Seeger, and others. There are several Dylan mentions, accompanied by photos, including some minutes discussing the Dylan/Ochs relationship, one speaker (the former manager of the Gaslight Cafe, I think) calling Dylan "a prick". Lastly, Jeff Rosen is listed among the "Additional Thanks.""

This feature film by Martin Scorsese in two parts includes as yet unspecified footage of Bob playing with the Traveling Wilburys in part two. As there are no Traveling Wilburys video pages this performance is included here. The DVD release is on two discs while the Blu-ray release is on a single disc.

Moise Potié says: "Here's a rundown of the Dylan content on the DVDs:"

Disc 1: Almost all the Dylan content was on Disc 2. The only quasi-Dylan content on Disc 1 was a photo of Harrison reading the "Don't Look Back" paperback.

Disc 2:

Bob Wilbury content (all on Disc 2): (I don't have the Wilbury box set with the documentary DVD--I've always meant to get it, but haven't yet--so I don't know if any of this is already available.)

Thanks to Franck Faugere for information and scans of the French Blu-ray release and to Moise Potié for scans of the Canadian DVD release.

This 2012 documentary about the life of Jerome Felder, a.k.a. "Doc Pomus" is called A.K.A. Doc Pomus or Viva Las Vegas: The Improbable Rock ‘n’ Roll Life of Doc Pomus. It is not available on DVD but can be streamed online from Amazon's US web-site. About an hour in there’s a brief sequence with stills (no music content) where it’s alleged Bob contacted Doc about the latter writing lyrics for an incomplete song. Boogie Woogie Country Girl (recorded by Bob for the 1995 Forward/Rhino album, Till The Night Is Gone: A Tribute To Doc Pomus, see 1995) is mentioned but this song was not co-written by Dylan.  There are a few colour stills of the two of them together.

Thanks to Lars-Arne Klintworth and Derek Barker for information that the video for the song Twisted Road in this Blu-ray release includes footage of Bob performing in 1966. The video, for the song ‘Twisted Road’, was released on a Blu-ray version of the album in 24-bit/192kHz resolution. It appeared mid November 2012, a month after the standard album came out. The video for ‘Twisted Road’, however, had arrived as a promo in early October before the release of the standard album.  The song starts with Neil singing about Dylan and the first time he heard Like a Rolling Stone: "First time I heard ‘Like A Rolling Stone’, I felt that magic and took it home/Poetry rolling off his tongue/like Hank Williams chewing bubble gum/asking me, ‘How does it feel?’. The video begins with a quite a long still of the Folklore Centre poster and then cuts to a colour clip from the unreleased 1967 TV documentary Eat The Document, see VHS & DVD 1960s, presumably of Bob performing Like A Rolling Stone, but without audio.

Lars-Arne Klintworth's German copy of the 2CD set (no Dylan content) is Reprise 9362-49485-9.

Picture from www.classichitsandoldies.com

Bob Dylan, Keith Richards, Steve Miller, Eric Burdon and B.B. King are among the music luminaries featured in Born In Chicago, a new documentary that received its world premiere at the South by Southwest (SXSW) film festival in Austin, TX, 13 Mar 2013.  The movie tells the story of how American blues music was passed along from the generally impoverished black artists who helped originate the genre to younger, middle-class, white musicians who passionately embraced the blues. Other artists appearing in the film include Buddy Guy, Elvin Bishop, Paul Butterfield, Michael Bloomfield and Nick GravenitesBorn In Chicago is narrated by Marshall Chess, son of Chess Records founder Leonard Chess.  It was directed by John Anderson, whose previous credits include several Brian Wilson concert videos and the 2012 documentary The Beach Boys: Doin’ It Again.

More details of exact Dylan content will be added when available. For more information, see here . Thanks to Fred Muller for information.

Thanks to Freddy Ordóñez Araque, Harold Lepidus and Éamonn Ó Catháin for news that www.amazon.com are advertising an official Sony Legacy Blu-ray and DVD release of The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration to be released on 4 Mar 2014. Both the CD and DVD/Blu-ray releases will contain extra material, but sadly nothing new from Bob, not even his main concert performance of Song To Woody, inexplicably omitted from the 1993 releases. Because the Dylan material is the same, full details of these releases are included in VHS & DVD 1990-94.

This film follows a week in the life of aspiring folk singer Llewyn Davis, played by Oscar Isaac, in Greenwich Village, New York, in Winter 1961.
Apart from R-0919 and a song by Dave Van Ronk, all the songs in the film were performed by the main performers themselves, live on camera without lipsynching, produced by T-Bone Burnett.

R-0919-3 Farewell - out-take from The Times They Are A-Changin', recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 6 Aug 1963, CO 78975, take 4 (2:11)
This version previously obtained a limited release in the USA on the Pacifica Archives CD-R Bob Dylan At WBAI, see 2011. In the film it is sung at the end by a character who is obviously intended to be Bob. Sonny Boy McFitzson is of the opinion that the song used in the film is not the studio version on the soundtrack album (R-0919) but the released demo version from The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964, 2010. If this is true the film entry will have to be moved to

Songs Heard On The "Inside Llewyn Davis" Movie Soundtrack:

Remember Records RMB 75252 (NL) - front (my copy)
The alternative Songs Heard On The "Inside Llewyn Davis" Movie Soundtrack album was released on the Dutch Remember label on 31 Dec 2013. It is an EU-only collection of songs heard in the film Inside Llewyn Davis as performed by the original artists including Dave Van Ronk, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Joan Baez, Carolyn Hester (with Bob on harmonica!), The New Lost City Ramblers, and others. This is also listed in 2013.

Dave Van Ronk:

Prestige/Folklore Records FL 14025 (USA, 1964) - LP picture from Wikipedia
This film was inspired by the 2005 posthumous memoir by Dave Van Ronk, "The Mayor of MacDougal Street", and Dave's 1964 Prestige/Folklore Records album, Inside Dave Van Ronk, which both have the same front picture. The film title Inside Llewyn Davis is the title of the album released by Oscar Isaac's character, and the picture used on the LP front and even the typeface are a recreation of Dave's album front, with Oscar in the same clothes and pose in a doorway. "The Mayor of MacDougal Street" was the title bestowed on Dave by music critic and Dylan biographer Robert Shelton. The 25-track 1989 Fantasy Records CD reissue of Inside Dave Van Ronk also includes the 1963 Prestige/International Records album, Dave Van Ronk, Folksinger.

Harvest 0602547432889 (Europe) - sound track album front (my copy)

Thanks to "Isis 173" for information that episode 1 of this series, broadcast by HBO in the USA and on Sky Atlantic in the UK, included a "full band version" of Rocks And Gravel from the sessions for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. This is now determined to be a previously unreleased version, engineered by Ben Tanner at Sun Drop Sound Studios in Florence, AL:

R-1095 Rocks And Gravel [Solid Road] (Brownie McGhee-Leroy Carr) - studio version (stereo) from the Columbia test pressing and promotional copies of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, 1963, recorded Columbia Recording Studios, New York, 1 Nov 1962 (CO 76986 take 1, R-0017, see 1963), overdubbed by Ben Tanner/T-Bone Burnett for the TV episode.

Thanks to Bob Stacy for his detailed analysis of this performance, which has led me to allocate it a new R-number, R-1095 instead of R-0017!

  1. In the first episode, when Rust is in a noisy bar questioning some prostitutes, Rocks And Gravel is playing in the background. It is one of the two Dylan studio versions w/instrumental backing. The level of singing and playing is several decibels down within the soundtrack. It seems staged as very far away and echoey like it is being played live but at a distance in the same room where the conversation is taking place. These effects may have been “produced” by sound advisor T Bone Burnett.

  2. The Dylan vocal performance is definitely from this take: Take 1, recorded at Columbia Recording Studios, New York, 1 Nov 1962, from the Columbia test pressing and promotional copies of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, 1963. We can tell it’s from this take (CO 76986-1) because of the verse order and in some of the words Dylan sings. As in the test pressing version, here in this True Detective episode he sings the “clouds look lonesome” verse before singing the “Mobile and KC line” verse. Here, he also sings the phrase: “Don’t my gal look fine”. In the alternate version  from 1 Nov 1962 (50th Anniversary Collection, see 2012), Dylan reversed that verse order, and he used the words: “Don’t my gal look good”.

  3. What’s particularly notable about this whole True Detective version is the backing instrumentation. There’s a tremendous amount of harmonica (jazzy but driving harp playing) – much, much more than Dylan did in his released studio versions of this song. The drumming is also more booming and emphasized to the front. I haven’t checked the piano spots but I think the guitar and bass backing are also possibly not the same as what we’ve heard in the withdrawn The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan and the 50th Anniversary Collection versions. One of the most significant differences is that the brief spacing between the verses is extended from something like 3 secs. in CO 76986-1 to full instrumental breaks (at least 20 secs) of harp & drums (+ bass) playing. I haven’t timed the total length of this version (there’s a brief 1- 2 minute flashback to another scene before returning to the scene where the Rocks And Gravel playing continues), but I think the entire Dylan vocal from CO-76986-1 is present plus the extra instrumental fills.

  4. Are all the Item 3) changes to the original CO-76986-1 the result of T-Bone’s modern day post-production? I think almost certainly not.

This whole thing bears strong similarities to the playing we’ve previously heard in the version of “Mixed Up Confusion” on the 1985 Biograph. In other words, I think what we’ve got here is very much due to the producing instincts of Mr. Tom Wilson at the 8 December 1964 overdub session. From Krogsgaard’s research, we know that take CO-76986-1 was the source used for post-production overdubbing on “Rocks and Gravel”. Although most of the “R & G” overdub takes were incomplete, as Alan points out, there were at least three complete overdub takes recorded on that session date (takes 4, 8, and 10). Take #10 was the take that was circled on the Tape Information Data sheet. It was the one taken out to (Selected Works) SW 63115, Reel #5.

My guess is that - if what we are ultimately hearing on True Detective is from that 8 Dec 1964 redub session - then it most likely is Take CO 84439-10 from that session. Like I say, T Bone Burnett may have also added in some of his own production effects, but I truly don’t believe he would have seen fit to do the same full-scale modifications today that Tom Wilson was seeking to accomplish 50 years ago.

Hopefully, we’ll all get a proper chance to listen to it in much better quality than the muffled, distant & echoey scene background that’s part of the HBO series soundtrack. Too bad, it’s not yet available on i-Tunes or something similar (now on the soundtrack album, see below). BEWARE: I’ve already found two Internet links claiming to be the True Detective Rocks And Gravel – but – both are incorrect. One on YouTube was the Gaslight II version*. The other was an mp3 download of the “original” FW promo version. Neither of those are the same as what’s heard on the True Detective episode 1 soundtrack."

Peter Coulthard adds: "The performance here is the original 1962 studio version with an overdubbed harmonica, undoubtedly added by Ben Tanner/T-Bone Burnett specifically for the TV show. We don't know the identity of the harmonica player. Also added are the extended instrumental passages between verses. These have been taken from the original 1962 studio version. The engineer would have had access to the multi-track (three-track) tapes and could thus isolate the band from Dylan's vocal and splice-in the passages where required for the TV show. A bunch of echo has also been added to the audio. There are no 1964 overdubs on this version."

*Thanks to Todd S for information that this video on YouTube is actually from the Finjan Club, Montreal, Canada, 2 Jul 1962 (R-0986, see 2012). Thanks to Freddy Ordóñez Araque and Tim Dunn for information that this song has now been included on the soundtrack album True Detective: Music From The HBO Series, produced by T-Bone Burnett and released by Harvest Records on 14 Aug 2015. However, the version on the soundtrack album is not the same, see 2015. Thanks also to Lars-Arne Klintworth.

see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 1, but following the release of the 50th Anniversary Collection 1965 in Dec 2015 can be positively identified as actually from City Hall, Newcastle, 6 May 1965 - thanks to Bob Stacy.

At about the 14 minute mark in this documentary directed by Amy J. Berg there's a "blink and you missed it" reference to Dylan. Janis met her hero in Monterey early in her career (they were both managed by Albert Grossman) and said that she planned to become as famous as he. He replied along the lines of "someday everybody will be famous". This is accompanied by a black/white picture of Dylan. There's no Bob music.

"Prime Rocks: Soundbreaking - Stories From The Cutting Edge Of Recorded Music" - eight part Prime TV series released in New Zealand in Jul 2016, Blu-ray/DVD releases: TBA,  2016:

Picture from Prime TV web-site

Fred Muller says: "The Dylan content is about five minutes of the final episode "I am My Music". Robbie Robertson relates that John Hammond Jr. invited him to Columbia Studios in New York to see a friend working on a recording which turned out to be one of Bob’s Like a Rolling Stone sessions. Dion (DiMucci of Dion & the Belmonts) tells that he was also there and comments on the song’s duration.  The audio content includes a radio DJ promising to play "the whole six minutes", snippets of Like a Rolling Stone and Ballad of a Thin Man and, besides the aforementioned interviews, we see a collage of the familiar monochrome pictures taken at the session, some with the backing musicians, Tom Wilson and Albert Grossman. The late Sir George Martin appears briefly commenting that John Lennon idolised Dylan, and Steve Van Zandt is also seen.  Al Kooper doesn’t relate, for about the millionth time, how he came to play the organ! Almost miraculously there’s no contribution from Bono or The Edge. I must admit this is the first time I’ve encountered the claims that Robbie Robertson and Dion DiMucci were present!"

From Imdb: "In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, "Remember This House." The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and assassinations of three of his close friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. At the time of Baldwin's death in 1987, he left behind only 30 completed pages of this manuscript. Filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished."

The film contains an out-take from Don't Look Back (see VHS & DVD 1960s) with Bob Dylan and Bob Neuwirth watching John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers on television and Dylan comments on Clapton as "being the new guitar player". (Eric joined John Mayall's Bluesbreakers from The Yardbirds briefly in May 1965, only to quit a few months late and rejoin from Nov 1965 until Jul 1966. I saw him live with The Yardbirds at the legendary Marquee Club, Wardour Street, London, around Apr-May 1964. The next time I saw The Yardbirds was in 1965 when Eric had been replaced by Jeff Beck.) There is also footage of Bob and Eric Clapton on stage from Eric Clapton & Friends In Concert (1999, see VHS & DVD 1995-99).

MVD Visual MVD0226BR (USA) - front picture from www.amazon.com
Mick Ronson, who died in 1993 from liver cancer at the age of 47, is primarily known as having been David Bowie's lead guitarist in the Spiders From Mars era, but he was also part of Bob's Rolling Thunder Revue in both 1975 and 1976. However, this documentary by Jon Brewer concentrates on his work with Bowie, with a voice-over by Bowie recorded before his death in Jan 2016. Dag Braathen says the minimal Dylan content is "Just a few seconds from the Hard Rain TV special with audio of It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry from Renaldo & Clara dubbed over" (for both see VHS & DVD 1970s). The MVD Visual release contains both Blu-ray and DVD discs.

This documentary about the role of musicians with Native American heritage includes footage of Link Wray, Robbie Robertson, Buffy St, Marie, Jimi Hendrix and Jesse Ed Davis. The disc for the Kino Lorber US DVD release was made in Mexico. The Dylan footage is related to Robbie Robertson and is from the 2005 Martin Scorsese documentary No Direction Home (see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 3) and the 1976 music film The Last Waltz, also directed by Martin Scorsese (for 2018 Blu-ray releases see below).

Fred Muller adds: "Late fifties film of Toronto leads into Robbie talking about being invited to join Ronnie Hawkins’ band, followed by amateur colour film of The Hawks with Ronnie, Levon and Rick on stage. The Bob footage is from 1966, namely the "Judas!" heckle in Manchester followed by a verse of Like a Rolling Stone from Newcastle and him in a car, surrounded by concertgoers, where he complains about booing. Also shown is The Band playing Up On Cripple Creek in a room in (presumably) Big Pink. We see a fragment of The Concert for Bangladesh where George Harrison introduces Jesse Ed Davis. The clip from The Last Waltz is merely the last chorus of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. There’s a still of the I Shall Be Released finale to show most of the participants, including Bob. Bob-related interviewees include Robbie Robertson, Martin Scorsese and Charlie Sexton. Karen Dalton’s Something On Your Mind plays over the closing credits."

For the audio releases see 1978 for the 3LP set and 2002 for the 4CD boxed set. This release is 117 mins compared with the original VHS release of 112 mins (Steve Perrin explains that because PAL VHS releases ran approximately 4% fast compared with NTSC releases the material is actually the same). The UK Region B release has a slipcase with a card cover on the back which wraps around the bottom and lower part of the front with the UK film classification etc. As well as the Blu-ray disc, the slipcase contains a 100-page book with essays by Adam Batty, Greil Marcus and Robbie Robertson, plus rare archival photos.

R-0142-6 Forever Young

R-0143-7 Baby Let Me Follow You Down ((Rev Gary Davies, arr. Eric von Schmidt) - reprise

R-0144-7 I Shall Be Released

R-0142/R-0143 - Bob Dylan with The Band; R-0144 - Bob Dylan with The Band and ensemble.

R-0140 ( Baby Let Me Follow You Down) and R-0141 ( I Don't Believe You) from the 1978 soundtrack album are missing from the film itself as is R-0540 (Hazel) - apparently on Bob's instructions, his performance was only filmed from R-0142 onwards. Thanks to Fred Muller from New Zealand for pointing this out.

Eureka has announced a standard edition reissue of their Blu-ray Disc of The Last Waltz (The Masters of Cinema Series #200).  The release date is set for 22 Jun 2020.  This edition will lack the outer slipcase from the original limited edition, and will include a slimmed-down booklet.  On-disc special features will remain the same.

points out that the audio matches The 1975 Live Recordings disc 10 performance from 21 Nov 1975, evening show, and not 19 Nov 1975. The lyrics are "held back by big police."  On 19 Nov he sings "held down by big police."  Only the video (not the audio) at the end is from 31 Oct 1975!

Hurricane (Bob Dylan/Jacques Levy) - previously released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue, Nov 2002
Larry Crum adds that only the intro to Hurricane is from 19 Nov 1975. Most of the song matches The 1975 Live Recordings disc 11 performance from 21 Nov 1975, evening show (omitting verse 8 and cutting the last verse short).  Note that his hat changes after the intro!

Other Venues

R-2115 One More Cup of Coffee (Valley Below) - with solo by Scarlet Rivera - Unknown Hotel Room

R-2100-2 One Too Many Mornings - Gerdes Folk City, New York City, NY, 24 Oct 1975

R-2101-2 Simple Twist Of Fate - Mahjong Parlor, Falmouth, MA, 28 Oct 1975

R-2116 Will The Circle Be Unbroken (Alvin Pleasant Carter) - Unknown Location
Larry Crum thinks
R-2116 seems to have no Dylan involvement!

R-2105-2 The Ballad Of Ira Hayes (Peter La Farge) - Tuscarora Reservation, NY, 16 Nov 1975

R-2106-2 Your Cheatin' Heart (Hank Williams) - Unknown Location - 23 Nov 1975

R-2117 Love Potion № 9 (Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller) - somewhere on the tour bus
Larry Crum thinks that the video is so poor he can't tell if Dylan is involved. Bob is not listed as performing on this in the credits.

R-2118 Hurricane - Correctional Institution for Women, Clinton, NJ, 7 Dec 1975 (last verse only, harmonica solo deleted)

Larry Crum says that at 1:21:58 is a (backstage?) version of Like a Rolling Stone.  Joan Baez is wearing Dylan's hat and makeup.  The credits list "Man of Constant Sorrow" performed by Bob.  There is some music at 1:46:11 that Larry can't identify that may be it. Also Romance in Durango from 20 Nov 1975 (played over the credits) is missing a verse and chorus.

Three previously unseen video performances are extras on the 2021 Blu-ray release:

Criterion Collection CC3214BDUK (UK) - menu screen showing bonus performances
Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You - Forum de Montreal, Quebec, Canada, 4 Dec 1975, audio previously released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue, Nov 2002

Romance in Durango (Bob Dylan/Jacques Levy) - wrongly listed on left as Harvard Square Theater, Cambridge, MA, 20 Nov 1975 (evening show), audio previously released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue, Nov 2002
Thanks to Les Kokay for information that this performance is actually:

However, according to Soundtrack.Net the soundtrack album will not include any Dylan tracks. T. J. Jenkins has identified the "Dylan content" as a cover of You Angel You from Planet Waves by the Angel Band while the record label of their 1977 Arista album Spark In The Dark is shown on screen.
