Carolyn Hester - "Carolyn Hester" - mono vinyl albums
Bob's First Commercial Recording Session
Tradition Records TLP-1043 (USA mono, 1961) - front (my copy, no Dylan) |
Bob plays harmonica on three tracks recorded Sep 1961 on this album produced by John Hammond - this is now known definitely to have been his first commercial recording session. Thanks to Tracy Zank for pointing out that this is in fact Carolyn's second self-titled album - the first (shown on left) was actually her second album and was released in 1961 on Tradition Records (TLP-1043) with a completely different tracklist including House Of The Risin' Sun and The Water Is Wide - Bob did not play on that album. Thanks to Tim Dunn for the album! The sleeve notes are by "Stacey Williams" (Robert Shelton), who wrote the sleeve notes for Bob's first album under the same pseudonym. For more details, see Honourable Mentions, which also lists Carolyn's first album, Scarlet Ribbons from 1957 on the Coral label, produced in her home state of Texas by Norman Petty, producer of Buddy Holly and the Crickets. These two albums are together on CD1 of a 2CD set, Carolyn Hester Introduces Bob Dylan, from Jasmine Music, released on 12 Apr 2013. CD2 contains Carolyn's 1962 Columbia album plus Bob's first album and what purports to be his first single. For more details, see Questionable Releases. |
Jasmine Records JASCD 259 (UK mono/stereo, 2013) - front (my copy, includes Bob) |
The sleeve photograph of Carolyn on her first Columbia album is by Don Hunstein as is the photo of Bob on his first release Bob Dylan. Regular contributor to this site Bill Hester, who now lives in New Zealand, is Carolyn's cousin!
Produced by John Hammond.

Columbia/Legacy CK 57310 (USA) - 1994 CD release with bonus tracks (my copy, see 1994) |
Bob plays harmonica on five tracks recorded Sep 1961. I'm informed by Rob van Estrik that the album has not only been remastered, but also remixed, so that Bob's harmonica contribution on R-0002/3/4 is now more prominent than on the original album. R-0222 I'll Fly Away (Albert E. Brumley) - alternate take, previously unreleased R-0223 Come Back, Baby (traditional)
- alternate take, previously unreleased |
The unidentified song (12-16) on the recording session records has now been identified as Virgin Mary, which was included with Los Bibilicos [The Biblical People] (8-9) on Columbia CL 1796/CS 8596, released in May 1962. However, although Bob was present at the session, neither song includes harmonica, so he doesn't play on them. The 1995 Bear Family Germany compilation Dear Companion includes a remake of the originally released take of Virgin Mary on CD1 and alternate takes of both Virgin Mary and Los Bibilicos on CD2, but none of them have any harmonica playing.

Thanks to Jeff Gold of Record Mecca for photos of two of John Hammond's personal 10" single-sided acetates of I'll Fly Away (R-0002M) and Swing And Turn Jubilee (R-0004M). As they were created before the release of the album, these are Bob's first recordings! Thanks to Ian Woodward for information about the acetate of Swing And Turn Jubilee being offered for sale. For more information, see here (I assume these acetates are mono).
There are four variants of the US mono release:
First variant: The front sleeve has the silver star sticker. The rear sleeve has the number "3" at bottom right (this means the album was fabricated by Modern Album Finishing Co., probably at Terre Haute, IN). The record has the "6-eye" label design with the tracklist centred. Side 1 has all tracks below the centre hole with "Swing And Turn Jubilee" on two lines. Side 2 has two tracks above the centre hole.
Two US promo copies are shown, both with the first variant of the original "6 eye" Columbia record label. The first has "DEMONSTRATION RECORD NOT FOR SALE" printed in silver open text on the label, the second has a white demonstration label on the regular commercial label. Max from Italy also has a copy of the first variant with a red rubber stamp of "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE" on the rear sleeve and demonstration first variant 6-eye labels. This mono copy and Gerd Rundel's mono copy have the same generic Columbia US picture inner sleeve as the stereo copy below.
Second variant: The front sleeve is without the silver star sticker. The rear sleeve has "1" instead of "3" at bottom right (this also means the album was fabricated by Modern Album Finishing Co., probably at Terre Haute, IN). The record has the "6-eye" label design with the tracklist also centred. Side 1 has two tracks above the centre hole with "Swing And Turn Jubilee" in one line. Side 2 is identical to the first variant.
Third variant: The front sleeve is
without the silver star sticker. The rear sleeve again has "1"
printed at bottom right (again fabricated by Modern Album Finishing Co.,
probably at Terre Haute, IN). The
record has the "6-eye" label design with the tracklist left-aligned and
"CAROLYN HESTER" in much larger text than the previous variants. There are no
tracks listed above the centre hole on either side.
Thanks to Hans Seegers for information that the labels are from different Columbia pressing plants and all three date from May 1962. Gerd Rundel's third variant copy again has a "1" printed on the rear sleeve at the bottom right of the text box with track timings. The record has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XLP-55910-1B, Side 2 - XLP-55911-1C. Manuel García Jara's third variant copy has an "S" printed on the rear sleeve at the bottom right, now above the text box. This means the sleeve was printed at Columbia's plant in Santa Maria, CA. The record labels are almost identical to those of Gerd Rundel's third variant copy except for the fact that the small black "CBS" under "COLUMBIA" is missing on Side 1. This must be a misprint, because the Side 2 labels are identical.
Fourth variant: This is a later release
with the "2 eye" record label design, issued by Columbia from late 1962.
The fourth variant shown has the later plain red US Columbia "GUARANTEED HIGH FIDELITY" mono record label. The sleeve is the same as the third variant with a "1" on the rear at bottom right. Also shown is a sealed copy with an unusual Singer price sticker advertising two mono LPs for $5 or $2.98 each (stereo LPs at that time were dearer).
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Jeff Gold, Gerd Rundel, Manuel García Jara, Arie de Reus and Tim Norford for information and pictures.
Carolyn Hester - "Carolyn Hester" - mono vinyl album, Columbia CL 1796 (Canada), May 1962, re-released 1965:
The sleeve is essentially the same as the US album, apart from two differences: it has the text "Litho in Canada" on the front, but the text "PRINTED IN USA" on the rear sleeve is obviously not present. There is a "1" on the 1962 rear sleeve at bottom right. The Canadian record labels are a variant of the first US "6 eye" design, with silver text and logos on a brown background. There is also a 1965 Canadian mono edition with record labels with the "2 eye" Columbia logo design. Apart from not having a "1" at bottom right on the rear, the 1965 sleeve is identical to the 1962 sleeve.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Arie de Reus for information and scans.
Carolyn Hester - "Carolyn Hester" - mono vinyl album
releases, CBS BPG 62033
(UK), Jul
1962 (four variants):
Bob's first album also released in Jul 1962
was CBS BPG 62022, slightly earlier.
CBS BPG 62033 (UK) - copies made by Philips (three variants):
The record of the UK promo copy shown has white labels dated "July" while the records of the commercial copies have regular orange CBS labels. Arie de Reus' commercial copy was made by Philips.
The Philips sleeves have three folded-over flaps on the rear. There are three front sleeve variants and two rear sleeve variants. The first front sleeve variant is the same as the CBS sleeves with no catalogue number underneath the CBS logo at top left. The second front sleeve variant is unique to Philips copies, with "BPG 62033" in red underneath the CBS logo (very hard to read). This front sleeve is darker than that of the first variant, and "CAROLYN HESTER" is in blue instead of blue-green. There is a Philips variant (called 2A above), also with "BPG 62033" in red underneath the CBS logo (very hard to read), but "CAROLYN HESTER" in white. The first rear sleeve variant is the same as the CBS sleeves with "Produced by John Hammond" printed above the liner notes on the left. The second rear sleeve variant (here again called variant 2A) is unique to Philips copies, with the CBS logo at top right printed lower and "Produced by John Hammond" underneath.
The Philips record labels have "BPG 62033" to the right of the centre hole. Also, on the Philips-made record labels to the right of the centre hole underneath the music publisher credits the matrix number is shown as “BPG 62033 1L” or “BPG 62033 2L” above the text “RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED 1962”. (The “L” on the Philips matrix number meant Mono, with “Y” for Stereo.)
Thanks to Paul Shenton for spotting that Dink's Song (Bob's version of which is now released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 7: No Direction Home, Sep 2005) on Side 1 is mistitled as "DRINK'S SONG" on both the first Philips variant and the CBS mono releases. Paul has also spotted that the Philips copy owned by Arie de Reus has mixed labels - Side 1 has "CAROLYN HESTER" left aligned while Side 2 has "CAROLYN HESTER" centred (as on both the UK Philips and CBS stereo copies below). Come Back Baby on the Side 2 label is correct. Paul has a copy of the Philips album with the same Side 1 label, but the Side 2 label now matches, with "CAROLYN HESTER" left aligned. However, on this Side 2 label Come Back Baby is misprinted as "SOME BACK BABY". Thanks also to Paul for photocopies of the spines of both the Philips and CBS mono releases showing that the US catalogue number "CL 1796" is present on the spine of the Philips release and missing from the spine of the CBS release. Paul has four copies of the Philips release with the same spine text positioned slightly differently - two spines are shown.
CBS BPG 62033 (UK mono) - spine photocopy by Paul Shenton (copy made by
Philips - "BPG 62033" on left, "CL 1796" on right)
CBS BPG 62033 (UK mono) - spine photocopy by Paul Shenton (second copy made by
Philips - "BPG 62033" on left, "CL 1796" on right, both more
widely spaced than on first copy)
CBS BPG 62033 (UK) - copies made by CBS (three
variants):
CBS BPG 62033 (UK mono) - spine photocopy by Paul Shenton (first copy
made by CBS - "BPG 62033" on left, "CL 1796" missing)
CBS BPG 62033 (UK mono) - spine photocopy by Paul Shenton (second copy
made by CBS - just "62033" on left, "CL 1796" again missing)
CBS BPG 62033 (UK mono) - spine photocopy by Paul Shenton (third copy
made by CBS - just "62033" on right, "CL 1796" again missing)
CBS BPG 62033 (UK mono) - spine photocopy by Paul Shenton (fourth copy
made by CBS - "BPG 62033" on left, "CL 1796" missing,
as copy 1)
Manuel García Jara's commercial copy was made by CBS (probably pressed by Oriole, as CBS had no pressing plant in the UK at the time). The CBS sleeves again have three folded-over flaps on the rear. The CBS record labels now have "BPG 62033" to the right of the centre hole instead of "BPG 62033". On the CBS release the matrix numbers are “BPG 62033 A” or “BPG 62033 B” above the shorter text of just “(P) 1962" instead of “RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED 1962”. On the CBS labels "CAROLYN HESTER" is left aligned on both sides, but on the CBS Side 2 label Come Back Baby is again misprinted as "SOME BACK BABY". These title mistakes were rectified by both companies on the stereo Side 1 labels.
Although the front and rear sleeves of CBS copies look the same as those of the first Philips variant above, including having "Produced by John Hammond" on the left of the rear sleeve above the liner notes, Paul Shenton has four copies with three different spine text! None have "CL 1796", the US catalogue number. Paul's first CBS mono release has "BPG 62033" on the left, like the Philips copies. Paul's second CBS copy has the same front and rear sleeve as shown and the same record labels as Manuel's CBS copy. However, the spine text on the left is now just "62033" instead of "BPG 62033"! Paul's third CBS copy has yet another spine variant - "62033" is now on the right instead of the left! The record labels of these copies have the "DRINK'S SONG" and "SOME BACK BABY" errors. Paul's fourth copy has the same spine text as the first, with "BPG 62033" on the left. The rear sleeve of this copy has the text "Produced by John Hammond" on the upper left and the CBS logo/catalogue numbers on the upper right printed slightly lower than on the other copies.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Arie de Reus, Gerd Rundel, Manuel García Jara and Paul Shenton for information and pictures.
