Thanks to Tracy Zank for pointing out that the Carolyn Hester album listed in 1962 is in fact Carolyn's second self-titled album - the first (shown left) was released in 1961 on Tradition Records (TLP-1043) with a completely different tracklist including House Of The Risin' Sun and The Water Is Wide - Bob did not play on this album. Thanks to Tim Dunn for the album! The sleeve notes are by "Stacey Williams" (Robert Shelton), who wrote the sleeve notes for Bob's first album under the same pseudonym. This 1961 album was released on CD with three bonus tracks as The Tradition Album by Road Goes On Forever on 1 Mar 2001, and then again with the original artwork as The Tradition Album by Hot Records on 29 Sep 2006, this time with just the original 13 tracks, but remastered. |

Thanks to Ian Woodward for pointing out that Carolyn's first album, also in mono only, was in fact Scarlet Ribbons from 1957 on the Coral label, produced in her home state of Texas by Norman Petty, producer of Buddy Holly and the Crickets. These two albums are together on CD1 of a 2CD set, Carolyn Hester Introduces Bob Dylan, from Jasmine Music in the UK, released on 12 Apr 2013. CD2 contains Carolyn's 1962 album plus Bob's first album and his first single (in mono). This release is presumably legal in the EU because of copyright expiry, but as it's not an official Columbia release, it is listed in Questionable Releases.

Thanks to Tim Dunn for information that this version has a new final verse: "Ringo just got married, now he'll never marry me; Never marry me, never marry me; Ringer just got married, now he'll never marry me, Not now and no other time". The liner notes by Carolyn include the credit: "For Bobby in hopes he won't object to the very last verse (it's about a friend of his, anyway!)." (Actually, most of her lyrics do not match the Dylan version in "Lyrics 1962-2001".) This album was also released in the UK as Dot Records DLP 3638 (mono), thanks to Ronald Born for scans of a UK test pressing in a plain white sleeve with details on a sheet pasted on the front. The song was also released as a single in the UK and on a French EP taken from the album.

Bill Hester has a New Zealand second edition release, manufactured for Vanguard by Philips in New Zealand. The mono catalogue number is given on the sleeve and record labels as VRS-9113, the same as the US mono release. The sleeve has three folded-over flaps. Both sleeve and record labels say "Made in New Zealand". Thanks to Bill for pointing out that his copy, like other later releases of this album, has a revised Side 2 with seven tracks instead of eight, with With God On Our Side replacing two original songs. |

Jack from Canada says: "There are, of course, many examples of Dylan pictured on an album sleeve, but these are of the various artists type, usually with a Dylan track (e.g. The All Time Greatest Rock Songs by various artists) or with a Dylan song/cover (e.g. Thank You by Duran Duran). This release (along with the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper) is, I believe, unique in that no Dylan track or song/cover is featured." The road trip taken by Barry and Bob in Albert's Rolls Royce from Denver to New York in Sep 1963 is described in the foreword to the book "Early Dylan" by Barry Feinstein, Daniel Kramer and Jim Marshall (Little, Brown & Co, 1999).

This new album from Dion DiMucci of Dion and The Belmonts fame enlists friends like Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt, Brian Setzer, Paul Simon, Jeff Beck, Billy Gibbons and Van Morrison. The album is being released on the newly launched Keeping the Blues Alive Records, a label co-founded by guitarist Joe Bonamassa, who also appears. The liner notes are by Bob, including: “Dion knows how to sing, and he knows just the right way to craft these songs, these blues songs. He’s got some friends here to help him out, some true luminaries. But in the end, it’s Dion by himself alone, and that masterful voice of his that will keep you returning to share these Blues songs with him.” The 2LP edition includes a voucher to download an MP3 version.

The Winter 2000 issue of Dylan fanzine "The Bridge" reported Bob would be heard playing harmonica on Martin Carthy's version of The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, which now appears on the boxed set The Carthy Chronicles from Free Reed Records. I later heard from Neil Wayne of Free Reed Records that this would sadly not be the case (presumably they couldn't get permission to use the performance with Bob). However, the boxed set (pictured left from the Free Reed web-site) is still of great interest to Dylan fans. Martin Carthy championed the unknown Bob Dylan during his visit to England in late 1962/early 1963 and helped him to get him gigs at small folk clubs in the London area. The set booklet includes text about Bob and a photograph of Martin and Bob performing together at the Troubadour in London on 15 Jan 1963. And several of the songs will be familiar to Dylan fans... on New MorningThis take (now revealed to be Bobless!) is described by Al Kooper as "a conception I had for Dylan to sing over". Performers are Al Kooper (guitars/organ/vocals), P. P. Arnold (vocals), Tom Cosgrove (guitar), Stu Woods (bass) and Rick Marotta (drums). The only recording details given are "Columbia Studios, New York, 1970", but Michael Krogsgaard in his series of articles "Bob Dylan: The Recording Sessions" shows Cosgrove and Marotta present at the New Morning sessions only at an overdub session on 30 Jun 1970, so I assume this session is where this track comes from. This version of the song also appears on the French 2CD set Chroniques Volume 1, see 2005. |

The set comes in a four-panel digipak
and includes a twelve-page booklet in German plus a Hoffman and Campe flyer There was also a Limited Edition 2CD set containing a copy of Oh Mercy and a CD of Wolfgang Niedecken reading the relevant chapter from the book. This was only available at performances by Wolfgang Niedecken in Germany in Oct/Nov 2005 when he read excerpts from the audiobook and played Dylan songs. The Jun 2011 issue of the UK music magazine "Uncut" contains
an 18 page feature article celebrating Bob's 70th birthday, featuring a
1966 interview with Bob that was not included in the first edition of Robert
Shelton's book "No Direction Home: The Life And Music Of Bob Dylan" in 1986,
but has been restored in the 2011 edition revised by Elizabeth Thomson and
Patrick Humphries. The magazine comes with four different covers and a CD
which also has four different front inserts. The CD is called Happy
Birthday Bob and contains twelve "birthday party songs" plus four Dylan
covers, there is no Dylan contribution. Each CD is available in either a

on sale in Oct 2022 while Bob was touring here, has a cover article about
Bob's live shows, with a review of his show in Stockholm, Sweden, on 27 Sep
2022. The cover CD, Contains Multitudes, is named after the first song on 2020's Rough And Rowdy Ways and has a front design in the same style as the album. The songs included are taken from the month's new albums and none are Dylan-related. |
