This is a page of items formerly included in the main list which were sold legally at the time in their own countries, but which have been challenged by contributors. I have therefore moved them here to this page. As the number of "grey" Dylan releases is very large indeed, I am only looking for new entries to this list that contain material that would otherwise qualify for the main list, namely performances that are not available on a currently-released Dylan CD in the USA. I have only used an R- number where the performance on the questionable item is officially released elsewhere, performances exclusive to these questionable items now have their own Q- numbers. Questionable releases of official Dylan albums are now here. Questionable releases of official Dylan singles and EPs are now here. For Questionable video releases, see here.
Revised 05 March, 2024.
1960s
"B. Dylan" - Emidisc 12" mono acetate, CBS? (UK)
1967(?):
"Emidisc" was EMI's brand of blank acetate which could be used by anyone
in the recording industry - exactly like a CD-R today - and the name does not mean this
recording was produced by
EMI itself. I
have other 1960s acetates pressed using Emidisc blanks.

Side 1:
I Was Young When I Left Home (traditional)

Side 2:
Mixed Up Confusion - A-side, original mono version (R-0007, see 1962)
Q-0004 I'll Keep It With Mine - mono version of Biograph track
Talkin' John Birch
Society Blues - mono studio version from the original Freewheelin' Bob Dylan,
(R-0018M, see 1963)
Surprisingly this is not included on the limited edition 4CD-R set The 50th
Anniversary Collection, Dec 2012, see 2012.
Who Killed Davey Moore? - live, Carnegie Hall, New York, 26 Oct 1963 (mono), also surfaced in 1980 in a stereo version on unreleased Columbia acetates (R-0388, see 1980)
Q-0005 Eternal Circle - mono version of track from The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3
Q-0035 Gamblin' Willie's Dead Man's Hand [Rambling Gambling Willie] - mono version of track from The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3, also from the original Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (R-0550, see 1963)
All these songs were then unreleased in the UK. I'll Keep It With Mine was covered in the UK by Fairport Convention, on their 1968 Island album What We Did On Our Holidays. Percy's Song was also covered by Fairport Convention on their 1969 Island album Unhalfbricking.

"Positively Bob Dylan" - Columbia Studios Nashville 12" mono and stereo test pressings, Columbia (USA) 1967(?):
Two of these tracks are of interest:
R-0582 That's All Right, Mama (Arthur
Crudup) - unreleased Freewheelin' out-take, from a 1962 Columbia acetate
that surfaced in Nov 1983
This has now been released officially on the limited edition 4CD-R set The
50th Anniversary Collection, Dec 2012, see 2012.
Q-0024 Stealin' (Will Shade) - from the "Minnesota Hotel Tape",
Minneapolis, MN, 22 Dec 1961, otherwise unreleased
This track has never been recorded in a Columbia studio.
The comments on the label are: "Note: Mr. Hammond not interested in releasing this material until it's reworked or polished. Too raw. Vocalist showing some promise. Sound crew and/or engineers call New York for clearance before reviewing this material. John Hammond property." These appear to be about a Bob Dylan audition, probably from 1961. The first five tracks on the discs are from 1965, when John Hammond was no longer producing Bob (he produced only Bob Dylan and The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan). All the material dates before Bob did any recording in Nashville, so I include these discs are questionable, as the other discs with Columbia Nashville labels above.

These unauthorised cassette releases (two releases of the same album with the same artwork but different catalogue numbers) again use the front design of the 1978 Japan/Australia 3LP set Masterpieces but have a slightly different unique tracklist:

*The distinction between “myth” and “legend” made in English isn’t made in other European languages – they’re both types of traditional stories, but basically a “myth” is a story that was never actually true, whereas a “legend” is a story that is based on true events or people. This means an “urban legend” should actually be called an “urban myth”, while Bob’s certainly a legend and definitely not a myth!

This Taiwanese release from 2002
purports to be an official Sony Music album, but is identifiable as being

This very unauthorised release is actually a clone of the 1988 Bob Dylan bootleg Live with The Band, Al Kooper, and Mike Bloomfield, also released in 1989 as The Session. However, neither Kooper nor Bloomfield appear on the album. A review from a Bob Dylan bootleg site says: "Cloned and more accurately repackaged as The Session. But to be avoided in either form as a haplessly scrambled, sonically inferior collection of unrelated tracks, all circulating in superior sound in more complete form. The issuer's identification of the Hawks session tracks as coming from 1965 tour rehearsals is ludicrously incorrect." Bobsboot.com lists the first ten tracks as coming from a 1985 German bootleg LP, He's Your Lover Now. Unbelievably, www.amazon.co.uk have this for sale at £22.93 ($36.13)! Kenny Matthew says that actually Traditional Line TL 1325 just has the first ten tracks, and not the Philadelphia live tracks.

recorded 13 Jan 1962, in New York City, broadcast 11 Mar 1962. (These dates are
speculative, some say the programme was never actually broadcast.) The interview is notorious for the outrageous lies Bob tells to the admiring Cynthia about his early life! |

"The Minnesota Party Tape" - CD release, BDA Records
BCACD 101 (UK), Feb 2012:
("BDA" stands for "Bob Dylan Archive")
BDA Records BCACD 101 (UK) - front of slipcase (my copy) |
This CD contains 25 recording from May 1961, recorded by Tony Glover at Bonnie Beecher's apartment in Minneapolis, MN, where the "Minnesota Hotel Tape" was later recorded on 22 Dec 1961. The songs are on three separate tapes: tracks 1-7 are on Tape 1, tracks 8-18 on Tape 2, and tracks 19-25 on Tape 3. However, the exact recording dates of the tapes, on one night or over several, are not known, so the tapes may not be in the right order. (On the 1994 Wanted Man Music bootleg 3CD set, The Minnesota Tapes, the songs are ordered differently with Tapes 2 and 3 swapped.) |

BDA Records BCACD 102 (UK) - front of slipcase (my copy) |
This historic show, Bob's first "proper" New York concert, was recorded at the Carnegie Chapter Hall, New York, 4 Nov 1961. The Chapter Hall was a small auditorium in the Carnegie Hall building. Other sources list the concert as being from the "Carnegie Recital Hall", which was apparently a different hall in the same building. Izzy Young promoted the concert, and hoped to sell 250 tickets, but in the end only around 50 people attended, many of them with complimentary tickets handed out by Izzy! |

Let Them Eat Vinyl 2012 UK 2LP release - picture from bobdylanisis.com |
Tracklisting (missing performances in italics):
Bob performed 22 songs at this concert, of which sixteen are in circulation. One of the available performances, Woody Guthrie’s This Land Is Your Land, has been officially released on No Direction Home - The Bootleg Series Vol. 7, and is not included on this CD. He Was A Friend Of Mine, previously uncirculating, was released online by the Bob Dylan Center, Tulsa, OK, in Nov 2021, see Online Performances (Other).

recorded in New York in 1961. Live At The Gaslight 1962, from the

1. He Was A Friend Of Mine |
The seventh song on this CD, The Story Of East Orange, NJ, is actually from the "Minnesota Hotel Tape" recorded by Tony Glover at Bonnie Beecher's apartment in Minneapolis, MN, 22 Dec 1961 (see below). Reportedly based on a similar monologue called "State Of Arkansas" by Lee Hayes of the Weavers, this has also appeared on Sad Eyed Radio Of The Lowlands, US demo radio show LP, 1970

This CD (released by complete coincidence, of course) features all six songs from
Dylan’s Sep 1961 Gaslight Café set and 18 of the songs performed at the home of
Bonnie Beecher in Minneapolis on 22 Dec 1961. For copyright reasons, BDA has omitted tracks previously released by Columbia Records. This release

Wanted Man Music WMM 33/34/35 (Europe, 1994) - bootleg 3CD set including Stealin' (my copy) |
Bob's contribution to this unauthorised but quasi-legal CD release is Stealin' (Will Shade) from "The Minnesota Tapes", recorded at Bonnie Beecher's apartment, Minneapolis, MN, 22 Dec 1961. As this is officially unreleased I haven't allocated an R-number, and the album is listed in Questionable Releases. Hopefully this early material will be officially released one day! The CD comes in a jewel case inside an outer card slipcase with a booklet.
For John Lennon's Jukebox, see the 2004 page of this Various Artists Compilations list. For Bob Dylan's Jukebox from 2006 see Honourable Mentions (Dylan's Roots). "Oh, Sister"/Abandoned Love" - 7" stereo single, (no catalogue number) (Germany), 2012:
Front scan from eBay |
This bootleg single, described as an "acetate"
but actually black vinyl, contains Oh, Sister live from the Boston Music
Hall, Boston, MA, 21 Nov 1975, almost certainly the evening show performance
released in 2002 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 5: Live 1975 - The Rolling
Thunder Revue, rather than the much rarer afternoon performance, plus
Abandoned Love, released in 1985 on Biograph. The rear text includes
"Another production by Gierschlund and Raffke Inc." ("Gierschlund and Raffke"
is German for "Greedy Throat and Money Grubber"). The sleeve is a folded
card and the "acetate" itself has
blank white labels. Thanks to Francisco Lima for finding this on eBay in 2012 and to Stefan Haras for the scan. |

Gossip GOSS010 (UK) - front (my copy) |
This unauthorised CD is taken from a live broadcast
of the "Hard Rain TV Special", recorded at Fort Collins, CO, 16 Jun 1976,
the concert from which much of Hard Rain was taken. Tracks are: 1. A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall - officially unreleased, surprisingly not included
on the Hard Rain album! |
5. R-0757 I Pity The Poor Immigrant - duet with Joan Baez, now
officially released on the Joan Baez CD and DVD How Sweet The Sound,
2009 and
VHS & DVD 2000s Part 4.
6. Shelter From The Storm - included on the Hard Rain album
7. Maggie's Farm - included on the Hard Rain album
8. One Too Many Mornings - included on the Hard Rain album
9. Mozambique - officially unreleased
10. Idiot Wind - included on the Hard Rain album
It was reported in 1976 that the four Joan Baez tracks had to be left off Hard Rain for legal reasons, although two of them have since appeared on Joan Baez releases. An official DVD release of this complete show is long overdue!

These tracks were broadcast from the S.N.A.C.K. Benefit, Kezar Stadium, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA, 23 Mar 1975. S.N.A.C.K. stands for “Students Need Athletic And Cultural Kicks”. This CD is legal because the concert was broadcast by K101-FM radio in San Francisco. However, although Bob appears on every track, his microphone was not functioning and his vocals are therefore almost inaudible (only picked up by other mikes). This is one for completists only! In 2017 RoxVox also released a 5CD set including this one, see below. |

by the Canadian Government in Jun 2015, but material which passed into the
public domain before that date was not re-copyrighted. Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin and Tim Dunn for information. |

Disc One: East Orange Tape - Feb/Mar 1961; Disc Two: Riverside Church, NYC 29th July 1961 Broadcast By WRVR-FM In The Program "Saturday Of Folk Music", A 12 Hour "Hootenanny" Saturday Special, 29th July, 1961; Disc Three: Carnegie Chapter Hall, NYC, 4th November 1961; Disc Four: Home Of Bonnie Beecher 22nd December 1961; Disc Five: WBAI Studios, New York City, Recorded 13th January, 1962, Cynthia Gooding Show - "Folksingers Choice"; Disc Six: WBAI Broadside Show, New York City - May 1962; Disc Seven: Studs Terkel's Wax Museum - WFMT Chicago - April 1963; Disc Eight: Oscar Brand Show WNYC New York - March 1963; Disc Nine: Free Trade Hall, Manchester, England 7th May, 1965; Disc Ten: Recorded Live At The BBC Studios, Shepherds Bush, London, on 1st June 1965, Broadcast On: Tracks 1-6 - 19th June 1965, Tracks 7-12 - 26th June 1965.
There are two errors concerning the tracks recorded at the BBC Studios, Shepherds Bush, London, on 1 Jun 1965. Firstly the rear of the box says incorrectly that recording was on the first broadcast date of 19th June 1965, not the actual date 1st June. Secondly the rear text of Sleeve CD10 is also wrong because songs 1-6 were broadcast on 19th June 1965, and songs 7-12 were broadcast on 26th June, instead of the other way round. This is confirmed by both Krogsgaard and Dundas.

Tim Dunn thinks the recordings may come from Wolfgang's Vault, but David McBride says: "The booklet offers no clues about the source of the recordings as it simply has a feature by Lisa Robinson in Disc from January 12th 1974 and one by Nat Hentoff from The New York Times on February 10th 1974. There is a footnote that says 'Thank you for purchasing this fascinating album on the RoxVox label. All our releases feature live FM radio broadcasts from the 60’s 70’s and 80’s and although the sound may not despite extensive professional remastering always be of the highest quality, we are sure that you will enjoy the musical experience of these wonderful performances.' I have checked the Wolfgang’s Vault listings for these dates and whilst disc one and two match the listings, the third disc which appears to be the MSG second set on 31st January 1974 includes a couple of tracks that Wolfgang doesn’t list."

Eternal Grooves EGRO 0042 (Japan) - picture from www.CDJapan.co.jp |
This unauthorised CD release contains thirteen
tracks from Bob with The Hawks recorded by Allen Ginsberg, listed as from
San José, CA, 12 Dec 1965. It
includes the only known live performance of Long Distance Operator,
previously dated as from Berkeley, CA, 4 Dec 1965.
However, Stephan Pickering says: "The Berkeley December 4th show does NOT exist.
It has been mislabeled all these years, it is actually the San José set. The
electric set from San José is the exact circulating recording that has been
available over the years labeled as Berkeley Community Theater." That
means this set is correctly dated! All these tracks were part of the
208-track download 50th Anniversary
Collection 1965, so were officially released in 2015. For more
information, see 50th Anniversary
Collection 1965. The cover photo is licensed from Getty Images Japan. The booklet includes a Japanese essay about 1965 tour circumstances. |

"Christmas Rock" - 20-track download-only release: Before 1962 Recordings (no catalogue number) (UK), 10 Oct 2020:
Picture from www.qobuz.com |
This 20-track download-only release is unofficial,
but possibly legal because almost all of the recordings are from before 1962
and therefore in the public domain. Some tracks are from the "Folksinger's
Choice" radio interview with Cynthia Gooding, WBAI Radio, New York, 11 Mar
1962, again technically legal because they are from a radio broadcast. None
of the tracks included have any connection to Christmas! Thanks to André Wilbers for information. |

Eternal Grooves EGRO 0048 (Japan) - picture from www.CDJapan.co.jp |
This is an unofficial release of the radio
broadcast from BBC Studios, London, 1 June 1965, officially released in 2015
on the 50th Anniversary Collection 1965, see
2015. Thanks to Geoff Lambourn for information. |
Various Artists - "Fire & Folk" - compilation download, Black Barn Music (no catalogue number) (UK), 22 Dec 2020:
Picture from www.amazon.co.uk |
This download-only set contains two Dylan songs:
Handsome Molly and Song To Woody (from Bob
Dylan). Since this is almost certainly an out-of-copyright set, the
version of Handsome Molly cannot be the live
performance from the Gaslight Café, New York, 15 Oct 1962 (R-0467),
from Bob Dylan Live: Thirty-Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances,
SME Records (Sony Music Entertainment), Japan, Feb 2001 (see
2001), and on the
limited edition live album Live At The Gaslight 1962 (see
2005). My guess is that it is the
live performance from Riverside Church, New York, 29 Jul 1961, broadcast the
same day on the "Saturday Of Folk Music" programme, WRVR radio, New York.
This performance has not been officially released but circulates amongst
Dylan fans. Bob's performance of Acne with Ramblin' Jack Elliott
from the same concert was released on the 2000 Vanguard soundtrack album The Ballad of Ramblin' Jack,
