"The 50th Anniversary Collection" - limited edition 4CD-R set, Sony Music 88765460722 (Europe), 28 Dec 2012:

This amazing 4CD-R set limited to 100 copies has been released in order to keep the European copyrights for the included material out of the public domain (artwork on the Internet has the alternative title The Copyright Extension Collection Vol. 1). It contains 86 tracks from 1962 including studio sessions tracks and live recordings, almost all officially unreleased, including 24 tracks previously uncirculating. The set comes in four separate CD paper sleeves in a sealed cellophane wrapper. There is a single-sided front insert in the CD-R1 sleeve and a folded single-sided insert in the CD-R4 sleeve. There are also three stapled A4 photocopied pages with more details of the tracks.

This track was supposed to be the take of this song released in 1991 on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3, but it is actually exactly the same as track 21, Wichita Blues.

Note that although the previous two takes were credited to Robert Johnson, this is also credited as "Good Morning Blues" to James "Kokomo" Arnold! Michael Gray in "Song & Dance Man III" (Cassell, 1999) says: "When Dylan recorded "Milk Cow Blues" (unreleased) in 1962, he used part of Kokomo Arnold's lyric, part of Presley's, part of Robert Johnson's 1937 "Milk Cow's Calf's Blues" and part of Lead Belly's "Good Morning Blues", shuffling the elements around in the course of two takes." Gray says earlier that although Elvis Presley's Sun version ("Milkcow Blues Boogie") is credited to Kokomo Arnold, it is completely different from Arnold's song, and seems actually to be the version of "Milk Cow Blues" recorded by Johnny Lee Wills in 1941. The takes referred to by Gray were takes 3 and 4, which had surfaced in 1980. Surprisingly, the version of "Milk Cow Blues" recorded by Johnny Lee Wills in 1941 is credited to Sleepy John Estes!

"Aunt" Samantha Bumgarner (1878-1960), who recorded Worried Blues with Eva Davis for Columbia in 1924 (Library of Congress)

Harriet Elizabeth "Hally" Wood was a folk singer and musicologist who was married from 1940-47 to broadcaster John Henry Faulk, who hosted the Westinghouse Studios "Folk Songs And More Folk Songs" series in the 1960s. Hally Wood recorded an album called Hally Wood Sings Texas Folk Songs for Stinson Records around 1950 that included Worried Blues, track 3 on Side 1. She was also a member of a folk group called The Skifflers, but they didn't record the song. Hally Wood claimed in the liner notes of her album to have learned the song from the recording by Samantha Bumgarner and Eva Davis from 1924 (despite the fact these two women came from and performed mostly in North Carolina, not Texas). According to Tim Dunn there is no copyright for this song on record for either Hally Wood or Samantha Bumgarner/Eva Davis. Tim adds "However, evidently, it is her version published in Jerry Silverman's songbook "FOLK BLUES: ONE HUNDRED AND TEN AMERICAN FOLK BLUES" (The Macmillan Company, 1958), pp.164-165. There is no composer, arranger, publisher, or copyright claimant given for the song, which would seem to imply Silverman considered it to be Traditional. In the index (p.297), however, Silverman's source for "Worried Blues" seems to be Hally Wood's on "Stinson LP 73" (no album title [HALLY WOOD SINGS TEXAS FOLK SONGS] or release date [the Library of Congress gives the date as "1950" in one database and "195?" in its main catalogue]). Further, Silverman indicates in his introduction (p.2) that he transcribed most of the recordings for his book (which Todd Harvey confirms in "THE FORMATIVE DYLAN" [p.125]). Silverman's book was copyrighted on 25 November 1958, its date of publication, with him as the claimant. Harvey discusses Wood's source, quoting from Wood's liner notes that she learned it from a 1924 recording by Samantha Bumgarner and Eva Davis (p.124-125). Incidentally, Harvey suggests that Silverman's book may have played a role in Dylan's "Minnesota repertoire" (p.125), as it also includes at least seven other songs from this time period."  (Glen Dundas credits Worried Blues as "Traditional - collected Hally Wood".)

Bob appeared in a programme in the "Folk Songs And More Folk Songs" series recorded in Mar 1963, broadcast May 1963, from which Blowin' In The Wind appeared in the Martin Scorsese documentary film "Bob Dylan: No Direction Home", Sep 2005, see VHS & DVD 200s Part 3. This audio of this performance was included in a German compilation called Blowin' In The Wind: 20 Versions in 2010. This may be incorrect. Both Bob Stacy and Larry Crum think it's the album track, confirmed by Derek Barker in "Isis" 166, who says that although Michael Krogsgaard and Olof Bjoerner list the track on the album as take 1, it is listed by Glen Dundas and Clinton Heylin as take 3, and is confirmed as take 3 on page 43 of the booklet with 2010's The Original Mono Recordings, see here. This means that R-0952 is exactly the same as the album track and take 1 is still unreleased!

R-0576-2 Mixed Up Confusion - out-take from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 1 Nov 1962 (take 10), the alternate mono take without the first harmonica solo from the Japanese promo LP Mr. D's Collection # 1 (see 1974) and promo EP, Mr. D's Collection  #2 (see 1976). This turned up on a 1962 Columbia acetate that surfaced in Nov
1983, and an edited version, R-0748, appeared on the 1985 original Biograph (see 1985)
However, Larry Crum says: "
Mixed Up Confusion CO 76982-10 on CD #2, Track 13, is a different mono mix from the mono mix on Mr. D's Collection #1 (R-0145) and the edited stereo on the original Biograph (R-0748). These are all the same recording but where the Mr. D's Collection track sounds like just one channel of the stereo version from Biograph, with no drums and very faint piano, the version on The 50th Anniversary Collection has prominent piano and drums and is speeded up. There is also at least one section where the piano is different: after "Seeing my reflection" there is a discordant descending piano riff on both the Mr. D's Collection and original Biograph where on The 50th Anniversary Collection the piano riff at this point is more rhythmic and similar to the rest of the track." The R-number for this take has therefore been revised! Roger Ford says: "I think R-0576-2 would be a better R-number than R-0145-4, since this version, being the original 1962 recording,  relates much more closely to R-0576/R-0577/R-0578 than it does to R-0145, which is the later overdub with different backing."

Bob Stacy and David Goldsmith first pointed out that any differences (if any) between this and R-0956 are very hard to hear, and then Larry Crum stated the two tracks are identical. Roger Ford has confirmed that this is not the real R-0963 but just a second occurrence of R-0956 (track 6, CD2). R-0963 therefore remains officially unreleased!

"Highway 51": The album's notes read "(B. Dylan)" and "Copyright (c) 1962 by Duchess Music; renewed 1990 by MCA." This is new information. I re-checked my notes and files, as well as the "Catalog Of Copyright Entries" and "Copyright Office Catalog," and there is no 1962 registration for this song on Dylan's behalf, nor a 1990 renewal. Further, the few copyright documents I have regarding his Leeds/Duchess songs fail to include this title. That does not mean a document of which I am unaware cites it, but that will remain unknown until the Copyright Office completes scanning of its old documents (a project currently, albeit slowly, underway).

"Wichita Blues" ("Going To Louisiana"): The album's notes read "(B. Dylan)" and "Copyright (c) 1962 by Warner Bros., Inc.; renewed 1990 by Special Rider Music." This is new information. The same comments about registrations and renewals for "Highway 51" apply here. I have several documents covering the Witmark period, none of which mention this song. Note that M. Witmark & Sons would have lodged the first registration (Warner Bros. being a successor).

"Worried Blues": The album's notes read "(H. Wood; arr. B. Dylan)" and "(c) 1991 Special Rider Music." Tim Dunn says Hally Wood is new information for this copyright claim. The song was first registered as part of the compilation of sound recordings comprising The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 (whose notes list it as a Traditional arranged by Dylan), and the Special Rider Music registration for this song, 18 March 2003, again gives it as a Traditional with a Dylan arrangement (see Hally Wood information above).

A version of Rocks And Gravel appears in episode 1 of the HBO US TV series True Detective, released on Blu-ray and DVD in the USA and UK in Jun 2014 (see VHS & DVD 2010s).
Thanks to Bob Stacy for his extensive analysis of the performance in the TV episode and his decision that this is the take used for the withdrawn The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (R-0017) but with extra instrumentation! This leads Bob to the conclusion that here we have another track from the "electric" overdub session held by Tom Wilson without Bob at Columbia Studios, New York, 8 Dec 1964 (CO 84439 take 10), previously unreleased! The "electric" version of House Of The Risin' Sun comes from this session, and was not finally officially released until 1993 on the CD-ROM Highway 61 Interactive, see 1993.

Thanks to Anders Lindh, Peter Coulthard and Keith Venturoni for pointing out that R-0955 is exactly the same as the track from The Original Mono Recordings including fade out, then there are about eight seconds of silence followed by the final drum roll.

R-0952A Bob Dylan's Blues - out-take from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 9 Jul 1962 (take 1), still uncirculating
Derek Barker in "Isis" 166 says that although Michael Krogsgaard and Olof Bjoerner list the track on the Freewheelin' album as take 1, it is listed by Glen Dundas and Clinton Heylin as take 3, and is confirmed as take 3 on page 43 of the booklet with 2010's The Original Mono Recordings, see above. This means that R-0952 above is exactly the same as the album track and take 1 is still unreleased!

R-0574   Mixed Up Confusion - third alternate take to the original US single (R-0007, see 1962), with an opening harmonica solo as R-0007 but with different lyrics, recorded Columbia Recording Studios, New York, 14 Nov 1962 (probably take 11), from a 1962 Columbia acetate that surfaced in Jun 1984.

R-0963   That's All Right, Mama (Arthur Crudup) - out-take from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 1 Nov 1962 (take 3 - the "fast" version).
According to Roger Ford this is not a remix on 1 Nov 1962 of R-0956 from 26 Nov 1962, but a "remake", a new take, despite the take number. Despite being listed as CD2, track 15 of The 50th Anniversary Collection. CD2, track 15 is in fact a repeat of R-0956 (CD2, track 6).
