"Bob Dylan" - unauthorised 2CD stereo and mono release, Not Now Music NOT2CD480 (UK), Jan 2013:
Not Now Music NOT2CD480 (UK) - front of slipcase, picture from www.ginza.se |
Thanks to Anders Lindh for information about this 2CD release, presumably "legal" because of copyright expiry in the EU after fifty years. As well as stereo and mono versions of the album, it includes two bonus tracks. According to Derek Barker of "Isis" magazine, Not Now Music informed him they were both sides of the original Mixed Up Confusion/Corrina, Corrina mono 7" single (R-0007 and R-0008, see 1962). However, this is completely wrong - Mixed Up Confusion is the stereo overdubbed alternate take from the original release of Biograph (R-0748, see 1985) and Corrina, Corrina is an unfaded version (2:53 instead of 2:44) of the version from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan with a final drum roll from drummer Herb Lovelle! This is a completely new rarity. There is also a 2LP vinyl release, but it does not include the two bonus tracks. |

take of 1962 single A-side (2:22), from original release of Biograph,
see 1985, recorded Columbia Recording Studios,
New York, 1 Nov 1962 (take 10) R-0955
Corrina, Corrina (traditional)
- extended version of mono track
with band from The
Freewheelin' Bob Dylan with final drum roll (2:53 instead of 2:44), recorded
at Columbia Studios, New York, 26 Oct 1962 (take 6), on 2CD
set Bob Dylan, Not Now Music (Sweden), Jan 2013 The two bonus tracks are also on the Not Now Music release Voices Of A Generation, another 2CD set which includes Bob's first album and Joan Baez's first album. They also appear on a 2CD set, Carolyn Hester Introduces Bob Dylan, from Jasmine Music in the UK, released on 12 Apr 2013. CD2 contains Carolyn's 1962 album (see 1962) plus Bob's first album. This release is again presumably legal in the EU because of copyright expiry. Thanks to Anders Lindh, Les Kokay, Derek Barker and Anssi Sallmén for information and scan. Special thanks to Anders for the album! I agree with Paul S. Levine that these really belong in Questionable Releases, but I've also included them here because of the interest in the rarities. |

Rolling Stone
- unedited version recorded live as R-1017
Fred Muller says: "The Isle of Wight version, as now released on
CD3 of
Bootleg Series 10, is unedited. During the final chorus, there are
two “like a rolling stone”s sung in unison, then the third has Bob
preceding The Band’s refrain with “just like a rolling stone”, immediately
followed by Bob calling “one more time ... “. This call and the third
“like a rolling stone” were edited from the Self Portrait and
Masterpieces versions, making them one refrain shorter. In fact, now
that I know what to listen for, I can hear the edit on Self Portrait
with headphones."
R-1028 Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 - recorded live as R-1017

Dave Van Ronk:
Prestige/Folklore Records FL 14025 (USA, 1964) - LP picture from Wikipedia |
This film was inspired by the 2005 posthumous memoir by Dave Van Ronk, "The Mayor of MacDougal Street" and Dave's 1964 Prestige/Folklore Records album, Inside Dave Van Ronk, which both have the same front picture. The film title Inside Llewyn Davis is the title of the album released by Oscar Isaac's character, and the picture used on the LP front and even the typeface are a recreation of Dave's album front. "The Mayor of MacDougal Street" was the title bestowed on Dave by music critic and Dylan biographer Robert Shelton. The 25-track 1989 Fantasy Records CD reissue of Inside Dave Van Ronk also includes the 1963 Prestige/International Records album, Dave Van Ronk, Folksinger. |

Doctor Dread - "Theremin In Dub" - limited edition CD release: Tsosume Records TSM 333 (USA), 23 Sep 2013:
R-1093 I For An Eye - Theremin overdub by Doctor Dread of R-0665, his dub remix of I And I from Infidels on Is It Rolling, Bob? A Reggae Tribute To Bob Dylan Vol. 1 (Sanctuary/RAS Records, USA, Aug 2004)
This album comes in a folded card sleeve with a pop-up centre showing Léon Theremin (Lev Sergeyevich Termen, 1898-1993), the inventor of the Theremin, with his machine. The address of Tsosume ("So Sue Me") Records is given as "50 Nicolayevska Street, Suite 728, Budapest, Czechoslovakia", which is obviously not true, but this has caused the album to be listed on several Internet sites as being from Hungary. However, it is actually a US release. 50 Nicolayevska Street, St. Petersburg, Russia, was Léon Theremin's childhood home. Information from "Theremin: Ether Music and Espionage" by Albert Glinsky (University of Illinois Press, 2000). Jack from Canada says the release was limited to 1000 copies.
The original 2CD set with R-0664 and R-0665 was released by RAS/Sanctuary Records in the USA and UK in Aug 2005, see 2004. The bonus "dub" disc with R-0665 was released separately by RAS/Sanctuary Records as Is It Rolling, Bob? Dub Versions: Visions Of Jamaica in the USA and UK in Apr 2005, see 2005.

From www.amazon.com: "During the final week of 1971, The Band played four legendary
concerts at New York City's Academy Of Music, ushering in the New Year with
electrifying performances, including new horn arrangements by Allen Toussaint
and a surprise guest appearance by Bob Dylan for a New Year's Eve encore. Select
highlights from the concerts were compiled for The Band's classic 1972 double
LP,
Rock Of Ages.
For the first time, all four of the concerts' multi-track recordings have been
revisited for
Live At The Academy Of Music 1971, a new 4CD+DVD collection. The
expansive new collection features new stereo and 5.1 Surround mixes, including
19 previously unreleased performances and newly discovered footage of two songs
filmed by Howard Alk and Murray Lerner.
Live At The Academy Of Music 1971 is presented in a deluxe, 48-page hardbound
book with previously unseen photos, a reproduction of Rolling Stone's original
Rock Of Ages review by magazine co-founder Ralph J. Gleason, an essay by The
Band's Robbie Robertson, and appreciations of The Band and the set's recordings
by Mumford & Sons and Jim James of My Morning Jacket. The collection's first two
discs feature performances of every song played over the course of the four
concerts, and the New Year's Eve soundboard mix on discs 3 and 4 is uncut, unedited, taken
straight from the master recordings and presented in full for the first time.
The set's DVD presents tracks from discs 1 and 2 in 5.1 Surround Sound, but not
including the four Dylan tracks, plus two filmed performances, both without
Dylan.
The stereo mixes for the first two discs and the DVD's 5.1 Surround Sound mix were
done by Bob Clearmountain, with the stereo mixes for discs 3 and 4 by
Sebastian Robertson and Jon Castelli, assisted by Ryan Nasci. The collection was
mastered by Patricia Sullivan at Bernie Grundman Mastering. The concerts were
originally recorded by Phil Ramone with Mark Harman."
Capitol Records/Universal TYCP 60080 (Japan), 11 Dec 2013:
The Japanese release is just the sealed U.S. box set with a front sticker and a Japanese booklet. The booklet was placed on the back over the U.S. shrink-wrap and has song lyrics in English and Japanese (apparently the translations of the Dylan lyrics are very poor). 29 songs from the Academy of Music residency and New Year's Eve concert remixed by Bob Clearmountain (not the soundboard
mix) have been released on a separate 2CD set in a three panel folded card
sleeve.
For the remastered reissue 2CD set which included the four Dylan tracks for the
first time, see 2001.
The new 2CD set presents these songs in a completely different order - the 2001 2CD set had the original 1972 2LP set (which
was in nowhere near chronological order) on CD1 and ten newly-released tracks
including Bob's encore set separately on CD2, 28 tracks in all, one being the
introduction. Thanks to Brian Grist for pointing out that the songs remixed by
Bob Clearmountain come from all four of the Academy of Music nights, not just
the New Year's Eve show as I originally thought, although they are now presented
in an order that follows that of the original concerts. The 2013 2CD set
includes one previously unreleased
performance left off the 2001 release - Strawberry Wine, which was
included on the 2000 bootleg 2CD set shown above, and the set also includes
Smoke Signal, first
officially released
on The Band’s 2005 box set A Musical History, see 2005.
Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin, Sonny Boy McFitzson, Dag Braathen, Hank Wellman, Tim Dunn and Brian Grist for information.

being released on 15 Oct 2013. This set includes 41 Dylan albums in card

Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George
Jackson (Acoustic
version), R-0085, see
1971. The
set is therefore listed here. The set also
includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen

Details of the new release of 1973's Dylan and the 2013 release Side Tracks are given below.
"Dylan" - remastered CD releases in card sleeves, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88691924312JK13 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe), 4 Nov 2013:
R-0097-8 Lily Of The West (Traditional, arranged E. Davies/J. Peterson) - New Morning out-take, recorded Columbia Studios, New York, 3 Jun 1970
R-0100-6 Can't Help Falling In Love (Hugo Peretti/Luigi Creatore/George David Weiss) - New Morning out-take, recorded Columbia Studios, New York, 3 Jun 1970, this track was reportedly also the A-side of a South Korean single, see Questionable Releases
R-0098-2 Sarah Jane (traditional) - New Morning out-take, recorded Columbia Studios, New York, 1 Jun 1970
R-0104-2 The Ballad of Ira Hayes (Peter La Farge) - New Morning out-take, recorded Columbia Studios, New York, 1 Jun 1970
R-0101-7 Mr. Bojangles (Jerry Jeff Walker) - New Morning out-take, recorded Columbia Studios, New York, 1 Jun 1970
R-0103-2 Mary Ann (traditional) - New Morning out-take, recorded Columbia Studios, New York, 1 Jun 1970
R-0102-5 Big Yellow Taxi
(Joni Mitchell)
- New Morning out-take, recorded Columbia Studios, New York,

This track also appeared on a 1991 Columbia promo CD single Dylan Originals (see
1991)
R-0099-13 A Fool Such As I
(Bill Trader)
- Self Portrait
out-take recorded at Columbia Studios, Nashville, TN, 26 Apr 1969
This is the stereo version from the 1973 Dylan
album, see 1973. This song was written by Bill Trader, but is frequently wrongly credited on releases of this album and
Columbia singles to "B. Abner" (Buford Abner) - see authorship note
here! A mono version (presumably a reduction from
stereo) was released on Columbia 7" singles (R-0099M, see
1974).
R-0096-2 Spanish Is The Loving Tongue (Charles Badger Clark/Billy Simon) - band version with backing singers, Self Portrait out-take recorded at Columbia Studios, Nashville, TN, 24 Apr 1969, not the solo version R-0072 (stereo)/R-0072M (mono) released in 1971 as a single B-side, which was a 1970 New Morning out-take. R-0072(M) has three verses, this version omits the second one of those. See the note about writer credits for this song in the entry for R-0072 in 1971. This take is also different from the take released in 2013 on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971).
1973's Dylan has been released as a separate remastered CD, but only in Japan (Sony Music SICP 30488). If it is released as a separate CD in the USA and Europe I shall remove the album from the Rarities listing!

- Acoustic version, B-side of 1971
Columbia single (see 1971),
lyrics on bobdylan.com
here Also available on the 1974 Japanese limited release LP Mr D's Collection #1 (see 1974), and the 1993 Japanese limited release CD Mr D's Collection #3 (see 1993). This version was not released on commercial CD until it was included on a bonus disc with the Dutch release of The Essential Bob Dylan (see 2003), and then on the Light In The Attic US release Listen, Whitey! The Sounds Of Black Power 1967-74 (see 2012). |

Side Tracks also contains:
R-0748-3 Mixed Up Confusion - edited alternate take of 1962 single A-side (2:22), from original release of Biograph, see 1985, recorded Columbia Recording Studios, New York, 1 Nov 1962 (take 10)
For details of the various released alternate takes of this song, see 1962. Many thanks to Roger Ford, Les Kokay, Bob Stacy and Ian Woodward for all their information about these alternate takes, and for permission to reproduce their findings. The original version of this take, with the original backing musicians and at the proper speed (R-0576-2) has now been released, along with six other takes of Mixed Up Confusion, on the Sony Music Europe 4CD-R set The 50th Anniversary Collection in Dec 2012. Although the version of Mixed Up Confusion on the "corrected" 1997 edition of Biograph was a newly discovered stereo version of the original single (R-0888, see 1997), the 2011 European 3CD "ecolbook" release of Biograph contains the alternate take of Mixed Up Confusion from the 1985 release of the set (R-0748 as here). If this is a deliberate change, and not just a "Columbia Cock-up" that will be corrected as in 1997, then the stereo version of the original single will become a rarity again, and has been allocated a new number, R-0888! Thanks to Blake Eikenberry for information that this 2CD set also contains the alternate take of Mixed Up Confusion from the 1985 release of the set (R-0748)! It appears that Columbia have set this "Cock-up" in stone! I am keeping R-0748 listed here in case the situation changes again...
Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for pointing out that Positively 4th Street here is 15 seconds longer than the version on Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits and Biograph. This is the version formerly listed as R-0049, the alternate stereo mix (4:12), longer than standard single (3:56), from Columbia Disco Teen 66 compilation album, 1966. This version is now included in stereo on the 2012 remastered Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits (US release), replacing the single version which is now to be found on CD only on 1985's Biograph (it's also on the non-US release The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2, see 2000). Thanks to Carsten Baumann and David Goldsmith for confirmation. The stereo version has ceased to be a rarity, and has been moved to the new Released Rarities page!
The four US and European releases are listed below:
"Side Tracks" - 2CD set: Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88691924312JK42 (USA), 5 Nov 2013:
Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88691924312JK42 (USA) - spine of unfolded
card sleeve
The 2CD set inside The Complete Album Collection Vol. One comes in a folded card sleeve with the pockets for the CDs on both sides of the centre of the inside sleeve. The sleeve has catalogue number "88691924312JK42" on the spine plus "DISCS 46&47" (the 41 albums have catalogue numbers "88691924312JK01" to "88691924312JK41" on the sleeves plus "DISC 1" to DISC 45"), and the US discs are numbered "88691924312D46" and "88691924312D47" (very blurred on the second CD). The European discs were made in the EU, probably in Austria, and are numbered "88691924312-46" and "88691924312-47".
As well as part of The Complete Album Collection Vol. One, Side Tracks with R-0085 and R-0748 was also available as a separate limited numbered edition 3LP vinyl set in a triple gatefold sleeve in the USA and Europe on Black Friday Record Store Day on 29 Nov 2013.
