"Masterpieces" - 3LP set, CBS/Sony
57AP-875/6/7 (Japan), Mar 1978:
Masterpieces was originally a 3LP set and was first released on CD in
Australia only in 1987 as a 2CD

to Stuart Moore for the Japanese magazine advert, Mar 1978.
All the rarities except R-0480 were on Side 3 of the set, which also included
Positively 4th Street and Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?,
the last of which was then available nowhere else except as the original 7"
mono single or on the 1966 CBS Japan 2LP set The Bob Dylan Story,
by then long out of print (see
International Album Releases (Dylan-only Compilations) 1960s). This is Side 3, track 3, also shown on the Japanese release as

Also included with the set is a double-sided card with
blue text with a questionnaire from Scantron on behalf of CBS/Sony with
questions about the area of Japan the customer lives in, age, type of work, how
often they buy albums and singles, favourite music genre, the periodicals they
regularly read, etc. This had to be folded and posted in an envelope. For
completing the survey every month twenty winners would receive a free LP.

The rarity on Side 2 is:
R-0480 Tomorrow Is A Long Time - live
performance from New York Town Hall, 12 Apr 1963 with fade out (the version on
Bob Dylan's Greatest
Hits Vol.2 (USA)/More Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits (UK) is segued into When I Paint
My Masterpiece)
This stand-alone performance has now appeared on the 2013 Mobile Fidelity US
hybrid SA-CD high quality audio two disc release of Bob Dylan's Greatest
Hits Vol.2 remastered by Steve Hoffman, see
2013.
The five rarities on Side 3 are:
R-0145-3 Mixed Up Confusion, 1962
- out-take from The
Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, recorded at Columbia Studios, New York,
1 Nov 1962 (take 10),
and
overdubbed with different backing, probably on 8 Dec 1964. It is
therefore
not
Bob's first single R-0007 (see 1962) as expected, but the alternate
take without the first harmonica solo from the Japanese promo LP
Mr. D's Collection # 1 (see 1974) and
promo EP, Mr. D's Collection #2 (see
1976).
This is Side 3, track 1. As on those other releases, it is
a
mono
mix of the overdub take.
This
overdubbed version runs slightly slow, see 1974
for more details. The
same overdubbed take of Mixed Up Confusion appeared on the
original release of Biograph (R-0748, see
1985)
in a stereo mix,
though
faded out a few seconds earlier than this one.
For details of the four released alternate takes of this
song, see 1962.
Many thanks to Les Kokay for all his information about these alternate
takes, and for permission to reproduce his findings and to Jean-Pol
Hiernaux and Larry Crum for further information. This take has now been
released, along with eight other takes of Mixed Up Confusion, on the
Sony Music Europe 4CD-R set The 50th Anniversary
Collection in Dec
2012.
R-0054-6 Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Jun
1966 - live at
Liverpool, May 1966 (5:41), B-side of 7" I Want You single, mono as originally recorded
(see 1966)
This is Side 3, track 4. This live version, never released on a regular Columbia
album, is also on the Japanese promo LP Mr. D's Collection #1 (see
1974), the Japanese
promo EP Mr. D's Collection #2 (see
1976),
the Japanese Mr. D's Collection #3
promo CD (see 1993),
the Japanese Dylan Ga Rock
promo 2CD set (see 1993
and 2010) and the
Capitol/EMI boxed set The Band: A Musical History (see
2005). Sadly, it does not appear as
promised on the
B-side of a withdrawn CBS Spanish EP (see 1972),
because the record was mispressed with It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train
To Cry from Highway 61 Revisited instead! This track
is now one of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple
iTunes Bob Dylan
Collection, see Online Performances
(Other), and is also on
the Columbia/Legacy USA/Europe 36CD set
The 1966 Live Recordings, Nov
2016.
All versions are still in mono as originally recorded.
Fred Muller says the version
on the Columbia/Legacy USA/Europe 36CD set
The 1966 Live Recordings
is not only longer at 6:51, but slightly clipped at the beginning when compared with the versions on Masterpieces and The Band: A Musical History.
This is confirmed by Peter Coulthard and Roger Ford, who say that the first
two bars of the performance on the 1966 mono single and subsequent releases of
R-0054 up to 2016 including this one were spliced in from the performance of
Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues from the ABC Theatre, Belfast, Northern Ireland, 6
May 1966! This means that track 8 on CD14 of
The 1966 Live Recordings
is not the same as R-0054, and now has a new R-number, R-1906.
R-0072M-4 Spanish Is The
Loving Tongue, Jun 1971 - B-side of 1971 Watching The River Flow
single (see 1971), not version R-0096 from
1973 Dylan album (see 1973), still in mono
confirmed by Larry Crum and Seiji Murata.
This is Side 3, track 5. This track is
in mono, although it's listed as stereo on the Australian Side 3 record label.
The Japanese Side 3 record label lists it correctly as mono. This take is also
on the Japanese promo LP Mr. D's Collection #1 (see
1974). The band version R-0096 from the
1973 Dylan album (see
1973) was not authorised by Bob, and many feel this solo version is
far superior. R-0072 has three verses from the lyrics - R-0096 omits the
second one. R-0072 was also released in 2011 on the Sony Music Germany
compilation Pure Dylan:
An Intimate Look At Bob Dylan
(see 2011) - the first occurrence of this
performance to be genuinely in stereo! An unreleased stereo version of this song,
also described as an out-take from New Morning, appears on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait 1969-1971,
Aug 2013. However, this is not R-0072 but an alternate take! This does mean that
now the song title is no longer shown in red.
An unexpected 1974 version appeared on Disc 3 of the 6CD set
The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 - More Blood, More
Tracks" (Deluxe Edition), 2 Nov 2018.
R-0084-10 George Jackson ("Big Band"
Version), Nov 1971 from single,
see 1971,
lyrics on bobdylan.com
here
Also see 1971
for all subsequent appearances on LP or CD.
This track is
distorted on the CD versions of this compilation, so the version on the 1993
Japanese limited release CD Mr. D's Collection #3 (see 1993) is the best available
on CD.
R-0130-7 Rita May
(Bob Dylan/Jacques Levy)
- Desire out-take, Jul 1975, released on singles Nov 1976/Jan 1977,
lyrics on bobdylan.com
here (see 1976/1977)
R-0130 is also on PRG 52, an Italian promo
compilation
(see 1977), two limited edition Japanese CD releases, Mr. D's
Collection #3 and Dylan Ga Rock (for both, see
1993). R-0130 appeared on the Sony Music Bob Dylan Custom Mix
CD web-site, Apr 2003, see Online Performances (Other). It was also one of the 42 rarities included
for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan
Collection, also see Online Performances
(Other). It is now also released on the 2010 version of Dylan
Ga Rock (see 2010)
Thanks to Seiji Murata, Shawn Chambers, Wil Gielen, Gerd Rundel, Michael Bällstav
and Stuart Moore for information
and scans.
"Masterpieces" - 3LP set, CBS S3BP 220502 (Australia), Mar 1978:
Dr. George Christos informs me Masterpieces was once given away by an Australian beer company with a
purchase of 24 cans of beer!
The set comes in a three-panel gatefold sleeve
with each panel holding a record in a plain white inner sleeve. There are
seven label variants of the Australian 3LP release listed below (on all of
them the four mono tracks on Side 3 are shown as stereo, unlike the
Japanese release).
CBS S3BP 220502 (Australia) - detail of Side 1 scan by Kenneth Robson (first
release - shorter copyright text, "Albert") |
Early Australian release labels had the text "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY A
REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS" without a CBS copyright. This is because up
to 1977 all Australian records were manufactured by the Australian Record
Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. A.R.C. changed its name to CBS
Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and after that date the longer
bottom edge text includes the CBS copyright information. (Stuart Moore says that the label change
may not have occurred till late 1978 or early 1979, Bob Dylan At Budokan
from 1978 still does not have a CBS copyright nor does Masterpieces,
Slow Train Coming from 1979 does have the CBS copyright.) |
CBS S3BP 220502 (Australia) - detail of Side 1, scan by Stuart Moore (later
release - longer copyright text, still "Albert") |
The first three sets of record labels have the shorter copyright text,
and most songs are credited to "Albert".
There is a
mixture of Warner Bros and Leeds as well as Control but Albert is predominant
throughout the first four releases.

"Masterpieces" - 3LP set, CBS S3BP 220502 (New
Zealand), Mar 1978:
CBS S3BP 220502 (New Zealand) - front scan by Bill Hester and Dan Jordan |
The New Zealand release of CBS S3 BP 220502 had the same three panel gatefold sleeve as the
Australian Masterpieces but the records, which had a different label
design, were manufactured in New Zealand.
Bill Hester has found a matrix number on side 2 only of his copy of 3580-700.
Simon Blokker's copy has matrix numbers on all sides,
although barely readable. These are: Side 1 - S3BP 220502 A, Side 2 - S3BP
220502 B 3580 700, Side 3 - S3BP 220502 C, Side 4 - 3580 700 ("S3BP" etc

Cassette Releases
Was there a cassette release in Japan?
"Masterpieces" - two cassette set, CBS 3PC 502 (Australia),
1978 (two releases):
This two cassette set comes in a
double-width case. The cassettes have off-white labels with the CBS logo. The rarities
are on Side 2 of cassette 1. The reverse of each insert is plain white.

The second cassette
release copy shown was bought at HMV in the UK as an import. There are
import stickers on the front and rear of the cassette 2 case. The inserts
are exactly the same as those of Stuart Moore's 1978 copy, but the cassette
labels are totally different, from that copy and from all the other
Australian copies below. Also unlike the Australian copies, the cassette
catalogue numbers are "3PC 502-1" and "3PC 502-2" instead of just "3PC 502"
on both cassettes. |

CBS 3PC 502-2 (Australia)
- cassette 1, Side 2, photocopy by Paul Shenton (second release Side 4) |
The orange CBS paper labels have no song credits to
Albert or Warner Bros, and Paul Shenton points out three song titles are
truncated:
Side 1: The Mighty Quinn (Quinn, The
Eskimo) is just "The Mighty Quinn"
Side 2: George Jackson (Big Band Version) is just "George Jackson"
Side 4: Rainy Day Women No. 12 & 35 is just "Rainy Day Women".
Both cassettes have screws on Side 2 as shown. Stuart's
cassettes do not, although his first 1980s variant cassettes below do have
screws. Because of the label differences, especially the missing song credits,
it's possible that this release is not from Australia at all, but from a market
like Singapore/Malaysia. Confirmation required!
Thanks to Stuart Moore
and Paul Shenton for information and
pictures.

This later CBS 2 cassette set also comes in
a double-width case. The smaller inserts have the track listings on the insides.
The cassettes have blue text printed directly on to the cases, there are no
labels. R-0480 is on Side 1 of cassette 1, the remaining rarities are on Side 2
of cassette 1. The Dylan songs are copyrighted by Chappell and Warner Bros.
Stuart Moore's second copy has the same inserts and style of cassette, but the
screws on cassette 1 are on the opposite side. The screws on cassette 2 are the
same on both copies.
Thanks to Stuart Moore for information and
scans.

This CBS two cassette set
also comes in a double-width case and is almost identical to the release
immediately above, but the cassettes now have black text. The
Dylan songs are again copyrighted by Chappell and Warner Bros.
It must come before the white with black
writing release below as the cassette has screws and same tiled pattern around
perimeter as the first 1980s release.

because the cassettes are again light grey with blue text. This time,
however, the text on the cassettes is different in that the Dylan songs are
all copyrighted by Warner Bros.

(fifth release):
CBS 3PC 502 (Australia)

This last release of
CBS 3PC 502 has exactly the same inserts as the previous CBS 3PC 502 release
above, with the same copyrights to Chappell and Warner. The August 1989
Australian CBS release of Empire Burlesque still had an old solid
cassette in grey, while the 1990 Australian CBS promo cassette of Under
The Red Sky has the same cassette as these tapes. This release can
therefore definitely be dated to late 1989 or early 1990. A 1990 Australian
CBS sampler with a 1989 copyright also has this later style cassette. |

Columbia 462448 4
(Australia) - cassette 1 front scan by Stuart Moore (first 1991 release) |
This re-release of the cassette set is now on the
Columbia label and has a new catalogue number. It can be dated as 1991
(when Columbia replaced CBS in Australia) because of the "Dylan
Originals" sticker. It is the direct equivalent of the 1991 CD release
below with the replacement front picture. It also comes in a double width cassette case and the
cassettes have clear cases with white text, no labels. The cassettes have
"scalloped" faces, which make them looked striped on the scans. The first cassette
insert has three folds, the second cassette insert has only one.
Thanks to Stuart Moore for information and
scans.

cassettes have transparent grey cases with white text, and no paper labels. Like the first 1991

The Columbia two cassette set below is probably the
last to have been released in Australia. It can again be dated as 1991 because of the "Dylan
Originals" sticker, and it comes in a double width cassette case with what
look like exactly the same inserts as the second release. The
cassettes again have transparent grey cases with white text, and no paper
labels. The text on the cassettes is different from that of the second 1991
release with "SIDE 1" on the left and "CASSETTE 1" on the right, for
example, instead of both ""Cassette 1" and "SIDE 1" on the right. Another
difference is that "COLUMBIA" is now centred horizontally instead of being
printed vertically on the left. This layout is the same as used for the 1994
Australian promo cassette release of The 30th Anniversary Concert
Celebration, for example.

This 2CD set release in a double-width jewel case was replaced in 1991 by a 3CD version (462448 9, see below) which duplicated the
original 1978 3LP set - both the
2CD and 3CD versions are now out
of print. The front picture of the 2CD set is a crop of the original album
front. There is an 8-page stapled booklet.

This set has the other five rarities, but instead of R-0130
and R-0084, it has:

(Bob Dylan/Jacques Levy) - faded version of Desire
out-take R-0130, Jul 1975, released on singles Nov 1976/Jan 1977 (see above),

R-2126 George

- edited version (4:20) of "Big Band" version R-0084 from singles,
see 1971,

Harald Sigvartsen notes
that this track has the same distortion which affects the restored 5:33 version
on the later three-disc releases (it may be from here that this distortion
originates).
The four missing tracks are Idiot Wind; I Want You; Song
To Woody; Love Minus Zero/No Limit.
Harold has also
noticed that tracks 2
and 3 of the second disc of this release have an editing error that is not
on the three-disc release. Track 2, The Times They Are A-Changin’ stops at
2.16, and the rest of the song is amalgamated into track 3, Masters of War,
which here clocks in at 5.34. There must have been a mastering error back in
1987. The later 3CD releases have this correct.

"2IN" stickers)
The 1992-94 artwork set (mine) has the same cover
picture as the 3LP set, while the 1991 set (Paul Read's) uses a different
picture from the booklet as the front insert. Paul Read's 1991 set is in
the "Dylan Originals" series and has a "Specially Remastered" sticker.
Stuart Moore's 1991 promo copy was owned by a record company representative and
has two stickers on the front including a 1991 "Dylan Originals" sticker, plus a
gold stamp with "PROMOTION ONLY NOT FOR SALE" on the rear. On the spine of this
copy there are three small stickers making up an indexing reference "2IN". The
discs are as shown above for the 1991 commercial release with "MASTERPIECES" and
"BOB DYLAN" in red.

The front picture of my 1992 3CD set restores the full album picture, but is
different from the 1987 2CD set as it has light blue borders and light
blue spines and "3 CD SET" text. The rear insert is different from that of
the 1987 2CD set in that the track listing and barcode are differently
positioned and it has light blue spines. Stuart Moore's 1991 set is
confusing in that it has Paul Read's CD case inserts but the same
folded insert as my set! Stuart Moore's 1995 copy has the same inserts as
mine. Hervé from France has a copy with red
CDs where disc 3 is different from those shown - "BOB DYLAN" is above
"MASTERPIECES" while on discs 1 and 2 "BOB DYLAN" is below "MASTERPIECES"
as in the scans by Stefan Asplund above.

The third set of discs is from 1995,
and has the text "MANUFACTURED IN AUSTRALIA BY SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT
(AUSTRALIA) LIMITED" on four lines. The most recent set of discs is from
the late 1990s and is red in colour.
Thanks to Paul Read for the loan of the inserts for the
1991 release. Thanks to Stuart Moore, Jack from Canada
and Stefan Asplund for information and scans.
