Columbia and CBS 7" mono single releases of I Want You - several of many
international 1966 singles with a unique live version of Just Like Tom Thumb's
Blues on the B-side
This page contains all 1966 7" singles/EPs with I Want You. It has been separated from 1966 because of the length of that page. "Blonde On Blonde" album releases with rarities and the major 1966 Dylan 7" singles/EPs with rarities are now listed here:
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

is 3:07)
Those single labels that have a timing show the length at 2:57, not 2:54.
R-0054 Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
recorded live with the
Hawks, at the Odeon Theatre, Liverpool, England, 14 May 1966, B-side (5:36, listed as "Recorded Live in Liverpool England")
This live performance, never released on a regular Columbia album, is also on the Japanese promo LP Mr. D's Collection #1 (see
1974), the Japanese
promo EP Mr. D's Collection #2 (see
1976), the 1978 Australian set
Masterpieces (see 1978),
the Japanese Mr. D's Collection #3
promo CD (see 1993),
the Japanese Dylan Ga Rock
promo 2CD set (see 1993
and 2010) and the
Capitol/EMI boxed set The Band: A Musical History (see
2005). Sadly, it does not appear on the B-side of a withdrawn CBS
Spanish EP (see 1972), because the record was
mispressed with It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry from Highway
61 Revisited instead!
This outstanding live performance of Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues is one of the most prized Dylan rarities and it demands inclusion on a regular Dylan album. It is surprising it wasn't on the 2001 Japanese live album Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty-Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances, see 2001. This track is now one of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, see Online Performances (Other), and is also on the Columbia/Legacy USA/Europe 36CD set The 1966 Live Recordings, Nov 2016. All versions are still in mono as originally recorded.
Fred Muller says the version on the Columbia/Legacy USA/Europe 36CD set The 1966 Live Recordings is not only longer at 6:51, but slightly clipped at the beginning when compared with the versions on Masterpieces and The Band: A Musical History. This is confirmed by Peter Coulthard and Roger Ford, who say that the first two bars of the performance on the 1966 mono single and subsequent releases of R-0054 up to 2016 were spliced in from the performance of Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues from the ABC Theatre, Belfast, Northern Ireland, 6 May 1966! This was however not done by Richard Alderson who recorded both shows. In a Jan 2017 email conversation between Richard and Peter Coulthard, Richard said that he handed all his 7" Nagra reels over to Howard Alk at the end of the tour and never saw them again. It's possible that the splice was done by Mike Claydon of I.B.C. Recording Studios, London, who was contracted by Columbia to make four recordings from Sheffield, 16 May 1966,onwards, or maybe by Columbia engineers in the USA, although the time scale is unbelievably short. This means that track 8 on CD14 of The 1966 Live Recordings is not the same as R-0054, and now has a new R-number, R-1906.
Ian adds that a "Billboard" page appears to have been 11" x 15" (which is one quarter of an Imperial page size of 22" x 30", known as quarto). The cut-out Blonde On Blonde cover illustration was therefore about 7.5" x 7.5", about the same size as a single sleeve. However, there's no indication in the "Billboard" ad that readers were intended to use it for that purpose!
Columbia/Legacy 88875124402-(SV)7 (USA), 6 Nov 2015:
The 18CD Collector's Edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 - Bob Dylan 1965-1966 The Cutting Edge includes nine of the mono 7" singles released in 1965 and 1966 with new picture sleeves and a "leopard-skin" spindle with which to play the singles. Columbia 4-43683 from Jun 1966 is included as Columbia/Legacy 88875124402-(SV)7 with the US promo single white labels with red text as shown above. The picture sleeve is virtually the same, but it has a particularly silly error on the labels - the producer is shown as Tom Wilson instead of Bob Johnston! For the correct labels, see above.

(Europe) - detail of pocket for Disc 3 of 6CD set, scan by Ian Woodward ("4-33108" shown as
released on "1/16/67", 16 Jan 1967)
Ian Woodward points out that the fold-out pages at the back of the book with the 6CD Deluxe Edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 - Bob Dylan 1965-1966 The Cutting Edge from 2015 show artists' contract cards for the 1965-66 period. The pocket that holds Disc 3 has details of the single releases of I Want You, first released as Columbia 4-43683 on 19 Jun 1966 (see above), and secondly as the B-side of the Hall of Fame single Columbia 4-33108. The release date for Columbia 4-33108 is shown as "1/16/67" (16 Jan 1967) and not on 25 April 1973 as originally thought (see 1973). This page will be revised as soon as possible.
Thanks to Sam C. Visser, Hans Seegers, David Plentus, Kenneth Robson, Manuel García Jara and Ian Woodward for information and scans. Thanks to Bob Egan for tracking down the New York City location of the cover photo taken by Jerry Schatzberg, for more details see .

"I Want You"/"Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
(live)" - 7"
mono singles, CBS
2258 (NL), end Jul 1966:
I previously listed the release date of this single as the same as
the UK release date, but Tom Willems says the single did not enter the Dutch
charts until 30 Jul 1966. The book "Hypnotist Collectors" by
Jean-Louis Dréau and Robert Schlockoff (Média Presse, France, 1989) gives the
release date as Aug 1966, which must be slightly late.
This Dutch single had a generic CBS Holland rear sleeve with illustrations of contemporary 72 singles, which does not show the catalogue number, artist or song titles. The record had three label variants - variant 1 has "45 RPM" to the right of the centre hole, while variants 2A and 2B have "45 rpm". Variant 2B is the same as variant 2A to the right of the centre hole, but the text lines to the left are more widely spaced, especially on the B-side. The plastic centre clips on the Dutch single variant 2A and illustrated on the postcard were sold separately in record shops at the time and are not CBS issue. Thanks to Éamonn O Catháin for the Dutch postcard with a picture of this single (Ian Woodward says this is not contemporary, but dates from around ten years later).
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Tom Willems, Éamonn O Catháin, Dave Mansell and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

"I Want You"/"Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues (live)" - 7" mono single, CBS LL-956-C (Japan), 10 Aug 1966:
This single was released by CBS in Japan before the company was taken over by Sony. The commercial record has orange CBS labels. The A-side is timed at 3:10 and is therefore the regular mono album track, not R-0322. Thanks to Wil Gielen for finding a white label promo copy online dated "'66-8-10" (10 Aug 1966).
Thanks to Francisco Lima for finding this on eBay and to Hans Seegers for scans.

Various Artists - "A Swingin' Party From Masterwork" - 7" mono singles
boxed set, Columbia Special Products CSP 437 (USA), 1966:
This was a box containing five current Columbia 7" singles, distributed
to Columbia employees. The box is in two parts and the rear is blank. Manuel
García Jara points out that the single selection in these boxes was random and
you should not buy a box unless you know it contains a Dylan single. The
Dylan single here is Columbia 4-43683 as above. The front and rear sleeves plus
the B-side of this single are as shown above, but the A-side has a "MASTERWORK"
stamp.

R-0054-2 Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
live at
Liverpool, May 1966, B-side (5:36)
For comments about occurrences of this live performance see the US singles entry
above.
Manuel García Jara's box contained two singles with picture sleeves and three in Columbia US generic sleeves. All the singles had a "MASTERWORK" stamp on the A-side. Only the record sides with the "MASTERWORK" stamp are shown.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Manuel García Jara for information and scan.
Various Artists - "Philco Invites You To A Disc-A Go-Go Vol. 1"- 7"
mono singles boxed set, Columbia Special Products CSP 120-1325 (USA), 1966:
This Limited Edition box containing five current Columbia 7" singles was identical in
content to the Swingin' Party box above. Philco was a subsidiary
of the Ford Motor Company, and this was a customer special offer. The single
here is again Columbia 4-43683. Manuel García Jara points out that the single
selection in these boxes was completely random, so there is no point in buying
one unless you know it contains a Dylan single!

R-0322-3 I Want You (edit - 2:54) R-0054-3 Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
live at
Liverpool, May 1966, B-side (5:36) Note this item has orange text. the first set in this series, CSP 120-1302, has the same title and cover, but with pink text, not orange, and a different 7" single, Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? c/w Highway 61 Revisited (see here). Michael Grasberger has a copy of the box with the pink text with yet another 7" Dylan single, One Of Us Must Know (Sooner Or Later) c/w Queen Jane Approximately, see here. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. |

This single again had no picture sleeve and came in a generic CBS sleeve. The record has orange CBS
labels. The length of the A-side is not given, but I assume it is the 2:54
edit R-0322. The length of the B-side is not given, but I assume it is the 2:26
edit R-0051M, so also see
here. At this time CBS records were
distributed from Athens by a company called "Music-box". This sleeve
therefore has the words 'Distributed by "Music-box" Athens' overprinted. Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans. |

This single label again shows the length at 2:57, not 2:54
There were four Italian releases: a commercial single and three different jukebox singles. JB 2426 had three label variants, one of which is listed here.
Because they contain Just Like A Woman, these singles are also listed here.

Bob's contribution was I Want You, the other tracks are by The Byrds,
Paul Revere and The Raiders plus Simon & Garfunkel. The rear sleeve has the same information about 34 EPs as the second release of West German EP CBS 6279 in 1965 Mono 7" Singles & EPs. Thanks to Hans Seegers and Ronald Born for information and scans. |

"I Want You" - 7" mono EP, CBS 5769 (France), Sep 1966:
This mono EP from Blonde On Blonde had I Want You and Obviously 5 Believers on the A-side and Just Like A Woman on the B-side. The French release has a "languette" (index tab) unique to France. For more information about languettes, see 1965. The rear sleeve shows four other EPs by Bob Dylan released in France. On the second rear sleeve variant the third and fourth EPs are reversed!
I Want You is 3:01, so is not the 2:54 slight edit R-0322 listed on this page. Just Like A Woman is 4:52, so is not the 4:46 slight edit R-0323 (see 1966). This EP was released in West Germany under the title of Great New Sounds Vol. 1, see below.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

This mono EP from Blonde On Blonde had I Want You and Obviously 5 Believers on the A-side and Just Like A Woman on the B-side. I Want You is 3:10, so is not the 2:54 slight edit R-0322 listed on this page. Just Like A Woman is 4:52, so is not the 4:46 slight edit R-0323 (see 1966). The rear sleeve has the same information about 34 EPs as the second release of West German EP CBS 6279 in 1965 Mono 7" Singles & EPs. The previous EP listed on the rear sleeve, CBS EP 6020, contains Positively 4th Street and is listed here. Manuel García Jara has a copy with the same sleeve where both sides of the record play correctly but have labels from an EP called The Best Of Dave Brubeck, CBS EP 5759! The four tracks are taken from the 1966 Columbia/CBS compilation album Dave Brubeck's Greatest Hits. This EP was released in France under the title of I Want You with the same catalogue number and front sleeve, see above. Thanks to Hans Seegers and Manuel García Jara for information and scans. |

"Bob Dylan" - 7" mono EP, CBS 5769 (Portugal), 1967 (three variants):
This EP was released three times with the same sleeve but slightly different labels. Only the first variant has "(P) 1967" at top left. The first two variants have "FABRICADO EM PORTUGAL [MADE IN PORTUGAL]" at the bottom of the labels, but the third variant (which may have been released later in the 1960s) has "FABRICADO EM PORTUGAL POR F.P.D. [MADE IN PORTUGAL BY F.P.D.]" at the bottom. "F.P.D." means "Fábrica Portuguesa de Discos" but the complete name of this company was actually "Fábrica Portuguesa de Discos da Rádio Triunfo", then known as just "F.P.D." and later as just "Rádio Triunfo".

"Bob Dylan" - 7" mono EP, CBS 5779 (Portugal), 1967:
CBS 5779 (Portugal) - front scan by Hans Seegers |
The tracklist of this mono EP says it has Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 and Pledging My Time
from the mono release of Blonde On Blonde on
the A-side and Gates Of Eden from Bringing It All Back Home on the
B-side. However, Keith Venturoni has a copy with first variant labels that plays the wrong tracks on the A-side, a 2:26 edit of the live version of Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues from Liverpool, 1966, B-side of the I Want You single (R-0054, 5:36, see above) plus I Want You. (2:26 is the length of the expected Rainy Day Women edit, R-0051M, see 1966.) The B-side is Gates Of Eden as expected. Arie de Reus and Hans Seegers have copies like this as well, and as the edited live track is a rarity, details are also listed here as well as in 1966. |

R-0930 Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues - edited version (2:26) of live performance from Liverpool with the Hawks, Odeon Theatre, Liverpool, England, 14 May 1966, R-0054, B-side (5:36) of mono I Want You 7" singles, see above
Are there any copies out there that play the correct tracks on the A-side? Information required!
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Arie de Reus and Keith Venturoni for information and scan.
