Mono 7" Singles & EPs: 1965 - Positively 4th
Street

These 7" Positively 4th Street singles are listed
separately because of the length of the Mono Singles 1965 page. The 7" mono
single version of Positively 4th Street was released on CD on The Best Of The
Original Mono Recordings in Oct 2010, see

The Best Of The Original Mono Recordings (2010). For the other 1965 Mono Singles & EPs pages, see here:

used by Bob's record companies from the 1960s onwards, see the

Single Sleeves page. (A single has much less value to a collector if it doesn't
have its correct original sleeve.)
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to
existing entries, please let me know!

"Positively 4th Street"/"From A Buick 6" - 7"
promo and commercial mono singles,
Columbia 4-43389 (USA), Jul 1965:

Columbia 4-43389 (USA) - A-side scan by Arie de Reus (promo single) |

This contained an early, slower, version of Can You Please Crawl Out
Your Window? released on a 7" single as Positively 4th Street by
mistake and withdrawn very quickly. For full details see the Rarities list for
1965. The commercial single looks exactly the same as the first
correct release of Columbia 4-43389.
See below for the regular single
of Positively 4th Street and 1966 for the
regular single of Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?, which has an
unedited mono version of Highway 61 Revisited on the B-side.
Thanks to Arie de Reus and Yan Friis for scans.

"Positively 4th Street"" - 10" mono acetates,

Columbia 4-43389 (USA) - acetate of A-side, scan by Hans Seegers (first
    example) |
Both these rare US mono acetates of Positively 4th Street are on 10"
single-sided metal discs and have white Columbia Recording Studios labels
with handwritten text (by the same person). The first example is from Hans
Seegers and shows the 3:47 timing but has no catalogue number.
The second example was found by Arie de Reus on eBay and has the
catalogue number 4-43389 plus a pressing number ZSP 11386. This has a timing
of 3:50. This copy is in a generic "audiodisc" sleeve from Audio Devices
Inc. (manufacturers of the blank acetates). This version has a "one, two,
three, four" countdown in a male voice, probably Bob Johnston's, which is
unique to this one acetate. For full details see the
    rarities list for
      1965.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Arie de Reus for information and scan. |

The US single Columbia 4-43389 was originally released with red labels but
was reissued (still in mono) in 1972 with
grey labels. Viktor Ericsson has a copy in a generic Columbia sleeve with
      matrix numbers: A-side - ZSP 111386 - 2C, B-side - ZSP 111387 - 1G. Arie de Reus has a commercial sleeve with a cut-out centre, which he believes
was used for the promo records shown. Thanks to Howard Bender for the scan of the commercial release with a solid centre. For 1973 Columbia US "Hall of Fame" mono singles with Positively 4th Street backed by

Thanks to Simon Blokker for pointing out that
"Musicians" is misspelled as "Musicans" on both the A- and B-sides, and
that Al Kooper's name is wrongly shown as "Cooper" (his real name is Alan
      Peter Kuperschmidt).

    London
45 LON 9792 (USA) [The Rolling Stones] - promo single A-side scan from
    www.45cat.com |
Martin Zehr of Kansas City, MO, has a London
Records USA promo single with orange labels (the commercial labels are blue)
for the Rolling Stones' Get Off Of My Cloud/I'm Free, released
in Autumn 1965. The record, however, plays Positively 4th Street/From a
Buick 6, released about the same time. The A-side matrix number is as
    expected - ZSP111386 1F. The London 45 has the A-side title crossed
out, with writing "Dear Gang, This is Bob Dylan's  Positively 4th Street."
Some DJ got a real surprise!  Since both 45s were released about the same
time, this must be a pressing plant error. Columbia and London shared
pressing plants in the USA. |

This single was re-released in Nov 2011 in a boxed set of four 7" mono
vinyl singles. It uses the 1965 US sleeve
but this was poorly reproduced - both the 2011 and 1965 scans are by Augie
Krater and you can see the 1965 sleeve is cleaner and brighter,
while the labels had a similar design to that of the CDs in the 9CD mono set The Original Mono Recordings
      released in Oct 2010
with a "365 SOUND"/MONO/arrows logo. These labels do not list
      the musicians. |

CBS 201824 (UK) - A-side scan by Hans Seegers (first variant, three
      spokes) |

The CBS UK single had no picture sleeve and came in
three slightly different label designs. The differences are in the number of
spokes connecting the push-out centre to the outside and in the text on the
right side of the centre hole - on the third variant "Blossom Music Ltd." is
replaced by just "Blossom Music" and "Side A" or "Side B" is added just below
the catalogue number. These
labels again do not list the musicians.

The first variant with three spokes, which occurs as
commercial copies only, was made for CBS by Philips. Rene Jørgensen's
copy of the first variant has stamped matrix numbers:
Side 1 - A-5202-4, Side 2 - A-5203-2 and comes in the 1965 CBS UK deeper orange
generic sleeve with the wavy top (see 7" Singles
Sleeves).
The second and third variants with four spokes were made
by Oriole, which was bought by CBS in Sep 1964. The second variant occurs both
as white label promo copies and as orange label commercial copies and the labels
have the same text layout as the first variant. Manuel García Jara has a copy of
the second variant with a solid centre and textured labels. Ronald Born thinks the third
variant, which again occurs as commercial copies only, dates from Spring 1967, when CBS started adding "Side A" and "Side B" to
record labels.

CBS 201824 (UK) - fake front sleeve, picture
          from eBay |
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for finding this
CBS UK single with a fake picture sleeve on eBay in Jun 2022. This
sleeve is the same on both sides. The original UK single came without
a picture sleeve. The record with this sleeve looks genuine.
The Dylan picture has been taken from the 1966
Daniel Kramer photo taken at Aust Ferry, Gloucestershire, used for
          The Bootleg
Series Vol. 7 - No Direction Home: The Soundtrack
          in 2005.
On the Kramer photo, as here,
the car number plate is "540 CYN" - for the 2005 video and audio
releases it was changed to "1235 RD" (a reference to Rainy Day Women
          #12 & 35)! |

"Positively 4th Street"/"From A Buick 6" - 7" mono
promo and commercial singles, CBS 1.893 (NL), 8 Nov 1965:
I previously listed the release date of this single as Sep 1965, the same as
the UK release date, but Tom Willems says the book "Hypnotist Collectors" by
Jean-Louis Dréau and Robert Schlockoff (Média Presse, France, 1989) gives the
release date as 8 Nov 1965, and the single entered the Dutch charts on 13 Nov
1965.

Manuel's sleeve with lime yellow text (variant 1B)
includes the record described as "first release variant 2". The sleeve
with light green text (variant 1C) matches the "first release variant 3"
and the sleeve with dark green text (variant 1D) has a second release
      record.
Like the US single above "Musicians" is misspelled
as "Musicans" on both the A- and B-sides, and Al Kooper's name is wrongly
      shown as "Cooper".
As can be seen, the sleeve variant 2 A-side title
is also slightly lower, with less space between the titles. The first
variant (1A) occurs in a misprint with part of the CBS logo reversed in
the top right hand corner! Manuel García Jara has two copies where the
labels are variants of the first release, which had "45 RPM" as the
      playing speed on both sides.
The second release of the Dutch single with the
darker green lettering comes with either a folded sleeve or a regular
sealed "bag-type" sleeve. The rear was identical to the front. The labels
of the second release were virtually identical to those of the first
except that they had "45 rpm" instead of "45 RPM".
Hans Seegers has a Dutch mispressing that plays
Positively 4th Street on both sides.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Tom Willems, Manuel
García Jara and Simon Blokker for information and scans.

This release has a crop from The Times They Are A-Changin' front

    two rear
sleeve variants - the first shows five German Dylan LPs and three singles
while the second is exactly the same as the front. The record was made in
Germany and has orange CBS labels. These labels do not list the musicians. Thanks to Hans Seegers

    CBS BA-221222 (Australia) - A-side scan by Hans Seegers (variant 1) |
    These
singles came in a standard CBS plastic sleeve. The records have orange CBS labels.
Manuel García Jara points out that although Australian single labels did not
indicate an A-side or B-side, the matrix number of the A-side was always lower
than that of the B-side. In this case, From A Buick 6 is "MX146415" and
Positively 4th Street is "MX146416", which would imply that From A Buick 6
was intended to be the A-side in Australia. |

Like the US single above "Musicians" is misspelled
as "Musicans" on both the A- and B-sides, and Al Kooper's name is wrongly
      shown as "Cooper".
The labels of Manuel García Jara's copy have a smaller
Allan's logo to the right of the centre hole and less space between the Allans
logo and the matrix number.

CBS BA-461074 (New Zealand) - A-side with solid centre, scan by Hans Seegers
    (variant 1) |
Thanks to Bill Hester for information about the New Zealand release, CBS
BA-461074. The copy owned by Manuel García Jara has the catalogue numbers
and matrix numbers to the right of the centre hole slightly higher than on
the labels of Hans Seegers' copy, as shown in the detailed scans. These
labels do not list the musicians.
Hans Seegers explains that the centre of Stuart Moore's New Zealand single
must have been cut out by a jukebox operator. It would not have been sold by
CBS in this way, as their logo is missing!

centre comes in a pink/white CBS South Africa generic 7" "SEVEN SINGLE"
sleeve, rather than the normal orange/white sleeve. This pink/white sleeve
    was also used in Rhodesia.
The
very rare release from Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) has a unique triangular
push-out centre. The label is otherwise identical to the South African release,
but the record has "MADE IN S. RHODESIA" stamped in the vinyl itself. Manuel
García Jara's copy has "PROMOTIONAL RECORD NOT FOR SALE" rubber stamped on the
A-side. Hans Seegers' copy has a patch on the A-side where a sticker has been.

underneath. The regular release was issued twice - see variations below. These
labels do not list the musicians. For a copy with withdrawn labels but the

These singles from before CBS was bought by Sony are very rare and expensive, especially in the
condition shown. The sleeve is a folded sheet. The promo record has white
labels and the commercial record has orange CBS/Sony labels. For the US
release, Columbia 4-43389, and other international singles with these two
tracks, see above. These labels do not list the musicians.
Thanks to
Hans Seegers for information and scans.

CBS EPC 496 (Mexico) - front of folded card sleeve (my
    copy) |
All songs are the mono album versions, not Spanish. There is also a Mexican album with
the title Como Una Piedra Que Rueda, which is actually the regular version of Highway 61 Revisited.
A-side: Como Una Piedra Que Rueda
    [Like A Rolling Stone]
    B-side: Positivamente La Cuarte Calle [Positively 4th Street];
El Blues Del Subterráneo Melancólico [Subterranean
Homesick Blues] |

      Hans Seegers adds: "There
are 8 variations of the Mexican Like A Rolling Stone EP. The first one
came in a bag type cardboard sleeve with folded-over flaps, orange labels
and was released in 1965 in two label and two sleeve variations. In 1966 CBS
Mexico started using folded out paper sleeves and "1966" on the labels. This
one came in many label and cover variations. Catalogue number and release date
remain the same until into the 1980s, e.g.
      orange

      labels for half the 1970's,

      orange/yellow
labels afterwards. Front sleeve: CBS logo and catalogue number in

      blue,

      but also in

      red.

Many “collectors” don't believe it until they've seen it!"
The copy shown (mine) is a
later release with a folded card sleeve and "(P) 1966" on the orange
labels. On the rear of the sleeve is an advert for a contemporary CBS jazz
      EP by pianist Ray Bryant.
