These 7" Like A Rolling Stone singles and EPs are listed separately because of the length of the Mono Singles 1965 page. For details of the promo and regular singles with Like A Rolling Stone split into two parts, which are rarities, see 1965. For the other 1965 Mono Singles & EPs pages, see here:
For 1965 Dylan mono 7" singles and EPs with rarities see 1965. For illustrations of all the generic 7" single sleeves used by Bob's record companies from the 1960s onwards, see the 7" Single Sleeves page. (A single has much less value to a collector if it doesn't have its correct original sleeve.)
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!
Greil Marcus has a written an entire book about this one song - "Like A
Rolling Stone: Bob Dylan At The Crossroads" (Perseus, USA/Faber & Faber, UK,
2005). The song was produced by Tom Wilson on 15-16 Jun 1965 before the rest of the Highway 61
Revisited sessions, which were produced by Bob Johnston. A long article by Patrick J. Webster called "In The Factory: Dylan and
Warhol's World" in the anthology "All Across The Telegraph: A Bob Dylan
Handbook", edited by Michael Gray and John Bauldie (Sidgwick & Jackson,
UK, 1987),
makes the case that the subject of Like A Rolling Stone could have been Andy Warhol's actress
Edie Sedgwick, while the diplomat in the chrome horse with the Siamese cat was Andy himself. In his book "The Philosophy of
Andy Warhol" (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, USA, 1975) Warhol recalled people suggesting
to him that the song included an attack on him: "I'd get answers like 'I
hear he [Dylan] feels you destroyed Edie' or 'Listen to Like A Rolling Stone - I
think you're the diplomat on the chrome horse, man.' I didn't know exactly what
they meant by that - I never listened to the words of songs - but I got the
tenor of what people were saying, that Dylan didn't like me, that he blamed me
for Edie's drugs." This story is repeated in "1001
Songs: The Great Songs of All Time and the Artists, Stories and Secrets
Behind Them" by Toby Creswell (Thunder's Mouth Press, USA, 2006/Hardie Grant
Books, UK, 2009). Some people try to refute this by saying that Bob
had not met Edie when he wrote the song, but Brian Hinton's book "Bob Dylan
Album File & Complete Discography" (Cassell, UK, 2006) says that Bob was
introduced to Edie for the first time at the Kettle of Fish folk club in New
York in Nov 1964. In Martin Scorsese's 2005
documentary "No Direction Home" the album version of the song plays over Bob
Dylan's screen test for Andy Warhol. Whatever the truth of it, the song is a very good match for Edie's life up to
then (she died in 1971 at the age of 28 from an overdose of barbiturates),
although to say it's just about Edie is far too simplistic an interpretation of
such a complex song. For
more information on Edie Sedgwick, see The Blonde On Blonde Missing
Pictures. In his book "Revolution in the Air - The Songs of Bob Dylan Vol.
1: 19578-73" (Constable, 2009) Clinton Heylin suggests the song could also
allude to Marianne Faithfull (another woman with a privileged education) or even
Joan Baez. For a detailed account of the song's progress in the US charts and how it gained airplay in the USA, see "Like A Rolling Stone" by Mark Teehan in "Isis", 216. |

This release date is normally given as 20 Jul 1965, but in his article
"Tracking Dylan #17: the Like A Rolling Stone single" in "Isis" 182 Ian Woodward
gives compelling contemporary evidence for dating this release as probably 13
Jul 1965 (6 Jul 1965 is less likely). However, the 1973 Columbia "Hall of Fame"
single Columbia 4-33100 with Like A Rolling Stone on the B-side gives the
release date as "JUNE 1965", see Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1970-76.

The promo with the full version of Like A Rolling Stone on the A-side and Gates Of Eden on the B-side is JZSP 110938/JZSP 110937, so is provably earlier than the split single JZSP 110939/JZSP 110940 (see above and 1965). Mark Polizotti's book "Highway 61 Revisited" (Continuum, UK, 2006) explains this: "The Columbia marketing guys jibbed at sending out a six-minute single to radio stations and juke box operators, so the split single JZSP 110939/JZSP 110940 was created and distributed instead: (1) they were frightened radio stations wouldn't play it in full, and (2) why let people get six minutes of music for a dime when you can charge them two dimes to listen to both sides? However, the full version got out to New York City discos and the rest is history!"

This single was re-released in Nov 2011 in a boxed set of four 7" mono vinyl singles. The sleeve used the CBS France EP front and rear design, for both see below, while the labels had a similar design to that of the CDs in the 9CD mono set The Original Mono Recordings released in Oct 2010 with a "365 SOUND"/MONO/arrows logo. Thanks to Keith Venturoni for finding a variant of this single in the "Threads + Grooves" series with a different catalogue number in a box with a T-shirt at Target in Dec 2012 in the USA. This is described as exclusive to Target. Both of these are listed in more detail in International Singles (All Formats) 2010s. |

"Like A Rolling Stone"/"Gates Of Eden" - 7" mono singles, CBS 201811 (UK), Jul 1965
(two releases), re-released 1974;
CBS 1811 (UK), 1974 onwards:
As well as two plain orange label releases in 1965, the UK single was released several times
from 1974 until the early 1980s with new orange/yellow labels - still in mono! For details of the earlier promo and regular singles with Like A
Rolling Stone split into two parts, see the 1965
Rarities List.
CBS 201811 (UK), Jul 1965 (two releases):
CBS 201811 (UK), 1974:
CBS 1811 (UK), 1974 onwards:
The copy I've called the fifth release has a similar sized "BOB DYLAN" as Manuel's first release copy, but extra text "CBS Records are the exclusive licensees for the UK" at the bottom of each label, not present on the earlier labels.
Éamonn Ó Catháin claims his reissue copy of CBS 1811 (with matrix A5175 A-3) is stereo, despite the fact it says "MONO" on the label! Roger Ford confirms this - his copy of the first release shown here (like Hans Seegers' first copy) has stereo matrix numbers: A-side - CBS-S-1811-A2, B-side - CBS-S-1811-B3. An entry on Discogs.com also confirms the track is in stereo.

mono singles, CBS 1.952 (NL), 23 Aug 1965; CBS 1952 (West Germany); CBS 1.952
(Norway); CBS S 1.952 (Sweden); CBS 201811
(Denmark), Jun 1965:
For full details of the earlier promo and regular singles with Like A Rolling
Stone split into two parts, see 1965.
I previously listed the release date of the Dutch single as Jul 1965, the same
as the UK release date, but Tom Willems says the book "Hypnotist Collectors" by
Jean-Louis Dréau and Robert Schlockoff (Média Presse, France, 1989) gives the
release date as 30 Aug 1965, although the single entered the Dutch charts on 28
Aug 1965, so was either released shortly before, or the chart entry was based on
advance sales. Thanks to
Manuel García Jara for information that it was released on 23 Aug 1965.
CBS 1.952 (NL), 2 Aug 1965:
CBS 1.952 (NL) - front scan by Hans Seegers (original single, red text - rear is the same) |
This withdrawn release of CBS 1.952 in Holland had Like A Rolling Stone split over both sides, see 1965. Most copies did not have a sealed sleeve, but an insert folded along the bottom edge. However, Joop van Seters says that he used to own a copy with a regular sealed sleeve. |

CBS EP 6107 (France) - front scan by Hans Seegers (EP) |
Joop identifies two different variants of this single:
Variant 1 - Sealed sleeve with red titles and name. Labels: both sides "45 RPM" (text to the left of the centre hole differently placed on A-side)
Variant 2 - Sleeve folded along the bottom edge with orange titles and name. Labels: A-side "45 rpm", B-side "45 RPM" (the B-side is in fact exactly the same as that of variant 1)
Tom Willems says that according to a Dutch magazine of the time this single was actually released after the single below with the full song on the A-side, backed by Gates Of Eden. This then forced Dutch fans who wanted the whole song on one side to buy the imported French EP 6107 at 6.50 guilders instead of the single at 3.95 guilders!
CBS 1.952 (NL), 23 or 30 Aug 1965:
The front and rear were exactly the same. Positively 4th Street/From A Buick 6 was the first Dutch single with a sealed "bag type" sleeve.
There were four main record label variants:
The A-sides of the third and fourth variant are the same. Manuel García Jara has identified two more variants, both with "45 RPM" on both sides:
A-side: Text on left: (similar to third and fourth variants, but not
identical) 1.952-1 near to "E" of "THE". "RECORDING FIRST..." printed over
"OF". Text on right: Identical to first variant. Text at bottom:
lower position than in any other shown.
B-side: Text on right: doesn't match any other. Text in the
circumference: in bold characters!
A-side: Text on left: 1.952-1 near to "OF".
Text on right: 45 RPM and 1.952 aligned to left.
B-side: Looks identical to fourth variant.
As there are so many variants of this single, I am inclined to disbelieve the story that it was discontinued in favour of the more highly priced French EP!
CBS 1952 (West Germany):
The West German single had the same front sleeve as the Dutch single with the orange text, but a different rear sleeve with colour illustrations of twelve current CBS German singles. The opening is at the top, not the side. François Guillez has found three rear sleeve variants: variant 1 is as shown in colour, variant 2 is the same as the front, and variant 3 is in monochrome with only eight singles illustrated. The record has orange CBS labels with the logo of the German copyright organisation GEMA. The circumference text is in German and doesn't include "MADE IN GERMANY" in English.
The record of Ronald Born's copy has a small label variant in that the credits on both sides have no space between "B." and "Dylan". The record is housed in the picture sleeve with the 12 CBS singles on the rear (variant 1).
Scandinavia: CBS 1.952 (Norway); CBS S 1.952 (Sweden):
The rear of the Swedish sleeve was identical to the front, and the record itself was the same as the Norwegian single shown with the "NCB" Scandinavian copyright organisation logo. This record was also used for the Danish third release below. Stefan Haras has a copy without a picture sleeve where the centre is now open.
Hans Seegers says: "Until 1973 all Scandinavian releases were pressed at the PolyGram pressing plant in Oslo, but up to 1968 the CBS companies in Norway, Denmark and Sweden printed their own picture sleeves. The labels of these Scandinavian singles are therefore completely identical, and all have 710 in the matrix number. Until 1968 all Norwegian releases came with cardboard inserts unless stated otherwise. Note that the Norwegian inserts feature the song titles of the A-side only."
CBS 201811.CBS 1.952 (Denmark):
According to information so far, there must have been three different Danish releases, all in the same sleeve with blank rear and catalogue number CBS 201811:
The copy shown of this extremely rare release has an embossed mark in the centre of the A-side A ("O/T1", see detail scan) - this is a British purchase tax code. This copy was bought in Denmark in the Summer of 1965.
The labels also include the "NCB" Scandinavian copyright organisation logo. However, the Danish single has the UK catalogue number (with format 201.811) and it is also different from the Norwegian and Swedish singles because it has textured labels (in the UK style) while the Scandinavian singles have smooth labels. Senne Willems has a copy like this. Manuel thinks this means the record was actually made in the UK, perhaps also by Philips. Augie Krater has a copy with the second release and record labels but which has smooth labels, not textured. The matrix numbers of this copy are: Side A: 1952 A 710 2, side B: 1952 B 710.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Manuel García Jara, Martin Gayford, Senne Willems, Sergio Mariano Romay, François Guillez and Ronald Born for information and pictures.

This was sold as an EP (at a higher price!) even though it contained only the
same tracks as the US, UK and Dutch singles above. This was because France
had already released Like A Rolling Stone split over both sides of a jukebox single, see 1965. The French rear sleeve shows the first two Dylan LPs released in
France, En Roue Libre (The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan) and "Mister"
Bob Dylan (The Times They Are A-Changin'), see

"Like A Rolling Stone"/"Gates Of Eden" - 7" mono EP, CBS EP 6107 (Spain), Sep 1966:
The rear sleeve with the Dylan EPs in black comes with either "DISCOPHON" or "Imp. en España/Print. in Spain" in the bottom left-hand corner. The rear sleeve with the Dylan EPs in pink has only "Imp. en España/Print. in Spain" in the bottom left-hand corner. The other Spanish EPs shown are Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? (CBS EP 6265, see here), Positively 4th Street (CBS EP 6210, see here) and Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 (CBS EP 5660, see here). Bizarrely, no-one in Spain bothered to translate the French text "Paroles et musique: Bob Dylan [Words and music: Bob Dylan]". Because the sleeve on his copy has come apart, August Krater has noticed that the French text "CBS est la marque..." is printed under the bottom folded-over flap!
All the records were made in Spain by Discophon S.A., Barcelona. The first A-side record label has "LYKE A ROLLING STONE" on the A-side with the time shown as "6'--". The second A-side variant has "Like" spelled correctly, the time shown as "6.--", and extra text "FONOGRAM S.A." to the right of the centre hole. The third has the spelling mistake corrected with the time just shown as "6'" and no extra text to the right of the centre hole. The front sleeves and B-sides of all three EPs are identical. All the Spanish record labels show the catalogue number as "EP 6.107".
To summarise, the sleeve and A-side record label variants go together as follows:
Sleeve variant 1: laminated front sleeve, unlaminated rear sleeve, EP pictures in black, "DISCOPHON" on rear sleeve.
This occurs only with A-side record label variant 1.Sleeve variant 2: laminated front and rear sleeves, EP pictures in black, "Imp. en España" on rear sleeve.
This occurs mostly with A-side record label variant 1, but also with variant 2.Sleeve variant 3: laminated front sleeve, unlaminated rear sleeve, EP pictures in pink, "Imp. en España" on rear sleeve.
This occurs only with A-side record label variant 3.
This EP with Like A Rolling Stone/Gates Of Eden was also given away for the purchases of products of a company based in Galicia, Camisas Dalí (Dalí Shirts). The front and rear of the generic 7" single sleeve have the slogan "This is the music of the Dalí shirt/Courtesy of Regojo Manufacturing". The "Dalí" logo reproduces the signature of the Spanish painter Salvador Dalí, who had a contract with this company at the time. The rear sleeve has two folded-over flaps, with a cut-out to display the record (which has a fourth label variant because the "Depósito Legal" text to the right of the centre hole is very small).

"Gates Of Eden"/"Like A Rolling Stone" - 7" mono single, CBS 2-472 (Malaysia), 1965:
This Malaysian single is extremely rare! Raja Abdul Razak Raja Musa's copy comes in a generic CBS sleeve with the stamp of a Penang record shop. Manuel García Jara's copy is even rarer and comes in a picture sleeve, plain white on the rear. This probably came from a Music City record store (owned by Hup Hup Records, who released CBS records in Malaysia at the time). Francisco Lima has found a copy on eBay in the same picture sleeve with a Music City rear sleeve (probably overstamped).

CBS 321.440 (Uruguay), 1965:
Gerd Rundel has found two promo copies on eBay: the first comes in a custom library sleeve from CX8 – Radio Sarandí, Montevideo. The second comes in a different CBS/Sondor sleeve, completely different labels and stamps with "DISCO DE PROPAGANDA PROHIBIDA SU VENTA" on the labels on both sides. This record was probably also owned by a radio station. Ger Hemel has a Uruguayan copy in a blue Discos CBS sleeve, which may actually be from Brazil, although it differs slightly from the Brazilian sleeve below.

CBS LL-821-C (Japan) - front scan by Hans Seegers (first release) |
This was one of the very few Dylan singles released by CBS in Japan before it was taken over by Sony - for two more see 1966. The rear sleeve is dated "65-10". The price on the front sleeve of the first release is ¥370 (printed below "45 rpm", at top right). Like other Japanese singles, this does not have a picture sleeve, but a folded insert inside a generic sleeve. The front of Manuel's second release copy is different - while original copies were sold at ¥370, this copy has the original price crossed out with black marker pen and a higher price (¥400) stamped below. The record is the same for both copies, has orange CBS labels and was made in Japan by Nippon Columbia Co. Ltd. |

"Like A Rolling Stone"/"Positively 4th Street" - 7" mono jukebox and commercial singles, CBS 1896/CBS JB 1896 (Italy), 12 Nov 1965:
CBS 1896 (Italy)/CBS JB 1896 (Italy) - jukebox singles:
CBS 1896 (Italy) - commercial single (withdrawn):
The Italian commercial single was released in two sleeve designs and three record label designs with several variants!
CBS 1896 (Italy) - commercial singles:
The second version of the Italian regular release had the same front sleeve as the first version, but a slightly different rear sleeve and record labels. Also shown is a promo copy with a sticker on the A-side with "DISCO CAMPIONE NON VENDABILE [SAMPLE RECORD NOT FOR SALE]". Manuel García Jara has copies of the second commercial release with different positioning of the text lines below the centre hole - as can be seen "Prodotto da Bob Johnston" is higher on the second variant.

"Positively 4th Street"- 7" mono EP, CBS 6198 (Portugal), 1965:
In addition to the title track, this EP has From A Buick 6 on the A-side, and Like A Rolling Stone on the B-side. The front sleeve design is similar to USA Columbia 4-43389 above. There are several differently coloured front sleeves, all with the same rear sleeve and record, which has orange CBS labels. The different label colours are probably just due to scanner differences.

"Como Una Piedra Que Rueda" [Like A Rolling Stone] - 7"
mono EP, CBS EPC 496 (Mexico), 1965, reissued 1966, late 1960s, 1970s, 1980s:
This EP exclusive to Mexico had a
unique picture of Bob at the piano by Daniel Kramer. For the Mexican 7" single
of Like A Rolling Stone, see above.
Hans Seegers adds: "There are 8 variations of the Mexican Like A Rolling Stone EP. The first one came in a bag type cardboard sleeve with folded-over flaps, orange labels and was released in 1965 in 2 label and 2 sleeve variations. In 1966 CBS Mexico started using folded out paper sleeves and "1966" on the labels. This one came in many label and cover variations. Catalogue number and release date remain the same until into the 1980s, e.g. orange labels for half the 1970's, yellow/red labels afterwards. Front sleeve: CBS logo and catalogue number in blue, but also in red. Many “collectors” don't believe it until they've seen it!"
On the rear of the sleeve is an advert for a contemporary CBS jazz EP by pianist Ray Bryant, Jazz En Hollywood, from his 1962 Columbia/CBS album Hollywood Jazz Beat.
Thanks to Jim Siddy for scans of an original 1965 release with a pasted card sleeve and "1965" on the record labels. The other 1960s copies shown (mine and Jim Siddy's) are later releases with a folded card sleeve and "(P) 1966" on the orange CBS labels. Jim Siddy's later 1960s copy has exactly the same folded card sleeve as mine, but completely different orange CBS labels. Thanks to Michel Pomarede for the scan of the front sleeve with the red CBS logo. Thanks to Kenneth Robson for scans of the 1970-80s yellow/red record labels. His copy has a folded paper sleeve.
"Like A Rolling Stone"/"Highway 61 Revisited" - 7" mono promo and commercial singles, CBS 33431 (Brazil), 1966:
The first variant in the blue sleeve has “(P) 1966” on the left side of the labels on both sides. The second A-side variant in the orange sleeve has “(P) 1965” on the A-side (in a much smaller typeface) and “(P) 1966” on the B-side as before. Ronald Born has a third variant in the orange sleeve which has "(P) 1965" on both sides.
Manuel García Jara has two further variants, both with "(P) 1966 on the labels. The first (1B) is similar to variant 1A but the details of the A-side are in slightly different positions. The B-side looks identical to the variant 1A B-side. The second (variant 4) is different from all the others. The song titles are in noticeably smaller text on both sides, and "Lado 1/2" is immediately below "33" and above "(P) 1966".
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Ronald Born and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
"Rainy Day Women #12 & 35"/"Like A Rolling Stone" - mono 7" single in "Hall Of Fame" series, Columbia 4-33100 (USA), Oct 1966(?):
I have this "Hall of Fame" reissue single with two
original A-sides dated as 1973, but there is evidence that Columbia 4-33100
was originally released in Oct 1966. More information will be given when
available. For the mono single releases from 1973 onwards, see Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1970-76. For the location of all mono and stereo singles in the Columbia "Hall Of Fame" series, see "Hall Of Fame". For US and Canadian "Hall Of Fame" and Collectables 7" sleeves, see 7" Single Sleeves. |

Bob Dylan - "Like A Rolling Stone"/Tony Bennett - "Smile" - "In Session At The Columbia Records 30th Street Studio" - promo 7" single, Columbia 4-43348 (A-side)/Columbia 4-41434 (B-side) (USA), 17 Jul 2008:
The catalogue number of the A-side is given as Columbia 4-43348 whereas the actual catalogue number of the original 7" mono single was Columbia 4-43346 (see above). This must be a misprint as the pressing number is given as ZSP 110938, which is correct.
Thanks to Dag Braathen for information and scans.
"Like A Rolling Stone (alternate version)"/"Desolation Row (piano demo)" - 7" stereo single with "Rolling Stone" magazine, Sony Music/Columbia (no catalogue number) (Germany), Nov 2015:
The single was released with the help of Searching For A Gem contributor Dr. Hanns Peter Bushoff. The sleeve is made of very heavy card. Both the sleeve and the record labels have the logo of the Austrian copyright organisation Austro Mechana, which appears in all German "Rolling Stone" singles. The single was pressed in Germany but it is apparently cheaper to register the copyright in Austria than with the German organisation GEMA! The magazine front has the headline "Bob Dylan und der beste Song aller Zeiten [Bob Dylan and the best Song of all Time]" and includes a nine page article "Revolution in sechs Minuten [Revolution in Six Minutes]" by Maik Brüggemeyer and a "free" translation of the song lyrics into German as "Wie ein rollender Stein" by singer, guitarist and author Judith Holofernes ( (Judith Holfelder-Roy - in the Book of Judith, part of the Biblical Apocrypha, the Chaldean general Holofernes was killed by Judith). Maik Brüggemeyer is the editor of the German "Rolling Stone" magazine, a long-time Dylan fan, and author of a Bob Dylan novel with the title “Catfish”, published in 2015 by Walde + Graf, Metrolit Verlag GmbH & Co. KG, Berlin (German ISBN 978-3-8493-0363-1). The cover photo is by Judy Linn and the person holding the Bob Dylan picture in front of her face is Patti Smith.
Thanks to Wiebke Dittmer, Ronald Born and Gerd Rundel for information and to Christoph Maus for the magazine and single.
