This page contains promotional and commercial releases of mono 7" singles and EPs with Lay, Lady, Lay for 1969. Although Bob's original mono albums from Bob Dylan to John Wesley Harding were released on CD as The Original Mono Recordings in Oct 2010, the mono release of Nashville Skyline was a reduction from stereo so was not included. It is currently no longer possible to buy mono versions of these album tracks. Because of the length of the 1969 Mono Singles page, the other major 1969 singles are now here:
Statesboro Blues: The Early Years 1927-1935 (Blind Willie McTell) - 2005 Document Records 3CD set with Rough Alley Blues |
For 1969 Dylan mono 7" singles and EPs with rarities see 1969. For illustrations of all the generic 7" single sleeves
used by Bob's record companies from the 1960s onwards, see the
7"
Single Sleeves page. (A single has much less value to a collector if it doesn't
have its correct original sleeve.) Incidentally, the well-known line from Lay, Lady, Lay - "lay across my big brass bed", comes from the 1931 single Rough Alley Blues by Blind Willie McTell with Mary Willis (also known as Ruth Willis), and is actually sung by Ruth Willis. Rough Alley Blues is included on Willie's 2005 Document Records 3CD set Statesboro Blues: The Early Years 1927-1935. The original Nov 1931 Okeh single was released under the name of Mary Willis. |

Manuel García Jara says that Lay, Lady, Lay is the most widely released Bob Dylan single, although it reached only #7 in the US charts (Like A Rolling Stone and Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 both reached #2). By 1969 CBS was established in more countries or had distribution agreements with other companies in countries where it had no presence. This is why it's possible to find Lay, Lady, Lay released in countries where Dylan singles were scarce, and sometimes it is the only Dylan release in that country. Apart from the usual countries, you can find releases of this single in Jamaica, Venezuela, Chile, Bolivia, Israel, Angola, Singapore, India and Pakistan.
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

The mono tracks listed here must have been reductions from stereo, since no mono mix was actually created for Nashville Skyline. However, as per Mark Easter's comments for I Threw It All Away/Drifter's Escape (see here), these tracks could have been specially mixed in mono for the 7" single releases. Even so, as there's no other evidence to support this at present I assume they are just the mono reductions. For mono versions of Nashville Skyline, see Mono Album Releases. Lay, Lady, Lay was released in 1973 with I Threw It All Away as part of the Columbia Hall Of Fame series, still in mono, see Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1970-76. The same two tracks were released as a stereo single in the UK in 1976, re-released in 1979 and 1984, see International 7" Singles & EPs 1976.
"Lay, Lady, Lay" - 7" promo mono/stereo single, Columbia 4-44926 (USA), 1 Jul 1969:
This single is also listed in International 7" Stereo Singles & EPs 1960s. The single came in a buff sleeve with text round the cut-out centre, the first time this design of sleeve was used by Columbia US.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scan.
"Lay, Lady, Lay"/"Peggy Day" - 7" promo and commercial mono singles, Columbia 4-44926 (USA/Canada), 1 Jul 1969:
Columbia 4-44926 (USA), 1 Jul 1969:
Columbia 4-44926 (USA) - promo A-side scan by Hans Seegers (first variant) |
The US promo single was released in three variants - two mono singles with white labels and one stereo single with blue/yellow labels. For the stereo promo single, see International 7" Stereo Singles & EPs 1960s. The first variant has the LP title "NASHVILLE SKYLINE" on one line, while the second splits it over two lines. The commercial US single also has the same two variants. |

Columbia 4-44926 (USA) - jukebox strips scan by Manuel García Jara |
The matrix numbers would indicate that Lay, Lady, Lay was intended to be the B-side because its matrix number is JZSP 150045, while Peggy Day has matrix number JZSP 150044. However, I have no knowledge it was ever marketed like that.
Manuel García Jara has a copy of the first variant of the commercial single in a generic sleeve with a set of jukebox strips.
Columbia(?) JBS 44926 (USA?), 2019:
The rear of the sleeve is plain white, and the single comes with mini front sleeves and jukebox strips, as a genuine jukebox single might.
Columbia 4-44926 (Canada), 1 Jul 1969:
For Philippines, India and Pakistan mono singles with the same catalogue number, see below.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Peter Denzler and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
"Lay, Lady, Lay"/"Peggy Day" - 7" mono singles, Columbia 4-44926 (Jamaica), Jul 1969, re-released 1970:
For US mono singles with this catalogue number, see above.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
"Lay, Lady, Lay"/"Peggy Day" - 7" mono promo single, CBS 4-44926 (Philippines), 1969:
"Lay, Lady, Lay"/"Peggy Day" - 7" mono singles, CBS 4-44926 (India/Pakistan), Jul 1969:
For US mono singles with this catalogue number, see above.
Manuel García Jara has two copies: one copy with a push-out centre) comes in a generic red/white 7" sleeve of the Gramophone Company of India Ltd., part of EMI (bought by Universal in 2012), who manufactured and distributed CBS records in India. The second copy had had the push-out centre removed to play in a jukebox - it has a demo sticker on the A-side. It also comes in a distinctive black/turquoise Gramophone Company of India sleeve.
For the very rare 1970 Indian stereo release of Wigwam with this label style, see International 7" Stereo Singles & EPs 1970. This label style was also used for the equally rare Indian release of George Jackson, see 1971.
Manuel García Jara also has a Pakistani copy that was manufactured by the Gramophone Company of Pakistan Ltd. (another part of EMI) and comes in a green/white generic sleeve.
Thanks to Peter Denzler and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

"Lay, Lady, Lay"/"Peggy Day" - 7" mono
promo and commercial singles,
CBS 4434 (UK), 25 Aug 1969, re-released 1975, 1979:
Again, the tracks would have been reductions from stereo, since no
mono mix was actually created for Nashville Skyline.
CBS 4434 (UK), 25 Aug 1969:
These UK singles did not have picture sleeves. There were three 1969 variants with plain orange labels. François Guillez has a copy of variant 1, solid centre, with a Peggy Day label on both sides. The record plays Lay, Lady, Lay and Peggy Day as expected.
The promo and first 1969 commercial releases have "U.S.A. Production" plus "MADE IN ENGLAND" and the CBS logo and UK trademark information along the bottom edge of the label. The text along bottom edge is missing from the second 1969 commercial release, which comes with both solid and push-out centres. The third 1969 UK commercial release has larger song titles and omits the words "U.S.A. Production" from under the song titles but restores the text along the bottom edge (the difference in the colours between the copies is probably due to scanner variations). It again comes with solid and push-out centres.
CBS 4434 (UK), 1975, 1979:
Paul Shenton has a 1975 copy that is similar to Hans' second 1975 copy, but with an open centre instead of solid.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Peter Denzler, Manuel García Jara, Paul Shenton and François Guillez for information and pictures.
"Lay, Lady, Lay"/"Peggy Day" - 7" mono singles, CBS 4434 (Ireland), 25 Aug 1969:
The Irish single also did not have a picture sleeve.
There was one release only. Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for information and scans. |
"Lay, Lady, Lay"/"Peggy Day" - 7" mono singles, CBS
4434 (NL/West Germany/Italy), Jul 1969:
All three records have orange CBS labels.
CBS 4434 (NL):
CBS 4434 (West Germany):
The West German promo sleeve had a generic reverse side, see 7" Single Sleeves. The record inside the promo sleeve was the commercial version as shown.

Thanks to Sergio Romano Romay for finding a copy for sale on eBay with a homemade sleeve. The sleeve, which is the same both sides, is actually very attractive, and has a contemporary colour photo of Bob. The record is official, and the same as shown.
CBS 4434 (Italy):
The Italian front sleeve is the same as the German front, with the "4434" catalogue number below the CBS logo. The copy shown was used for a jukebox single and has a centre hole punched out. The rear sleeve has only four LP illustrations. The sleeve and record were made in Italy.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Manuel García Jara, Dr. Hanns Peter Bushoff and Sergio Mariano Romay for information and scans.
"Lay, Lady, Lay"/"Peggy Day" - 7" mono singles, CBS 4434 (France), Jul 1969, re-released late 1970s/early 1980s:
|
For more information about the unique French index tabs or "languettes", see 1965. The second French release (my copy) has no languette and different record labels from Ronald Born's first release copy. François Guillez has a second release copy in the generic jukebox sleeve shown. The third release from Hans Seegers also has no languette, but it does have a 57mm cut-away strip on the rear edge. The record in this copy has brown injection "labels", which I'd date from late 1970s/early 1980s. For an injection label a thin coloured plastic ring-shaped layer is injected into the record itself, and the text/graphics cut out using a stamp so that the black vinyl underneath shows through, there is no paper label. |

"Lay, Lady, Lay"/"Peggy Day" - 7" mono singles, CBS 4434 (Portugal), Jul 1969:
The legitimate Portuguese releases of this single are very complicated! There are three sleeve variants:
1 CBS logo on front and rear is 15x15 mm, "GRAFICOS REUNIDOS-PORTO" in capital letters on the rear, "Fabricado em Portugal" printed on the rear.
2 CBS logo on front is 20x20 mm, on the rear 19x19 mm, "gráficos reunidos-porto" in small letters on the rear, "Fabricado em Portugal" not printed on the rear. There are two sub-variants of this sleeve:
2A Overall length of "CBS é uma marca registrada da Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc., E.U.A." on rear sleeve is 83 mm.
2B Overall length of "CBS é uma marca registrada da Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc., E.U.A." on rear sleeve is 99 mm.
3 CBS logo on front and rear is 20x20 mm, "gráficos reunidos-porto" in small letters on the rear, "Fabricado em Portugal" not printed on the rear. (the front of Sleeve 3 is therefore the same as Sleeve 2).
Added to this, the record labels have two main variants, each of which has two sub-variants:
1 "(B. Dylan)" next to song titles, no date above "FACE 1/2":
1A No space between “prod. por Bob Johnston” and "<<Nashville Skyline>>"
1B “prod. por Bob Johnston” 2mm below "<<Nashville Skyline>>"
2 "(B. Dylan)" below song titles:
2A "(P) 1969" above "FACE 1/2".
2B No date above "FACE 1/2" as variants 1A and 1B. This exists in two variants, with and without a spelling mistake!2B1- LP title incorrectly spelled "Nasheville Skyline" on A-side only (B-side was correct).
2B2 - LP title spelled correctly "Nashville Skyline" on A-side.
Thanks to Hans Seegers for (detailed!) information and scans.
"Lay, Lady, Lay"/"Peggy Day" - 7" mono single, CBS 4434 (Norway), Jul 1969:
The rear sleeve of the Norwegian single was plain white. It had orange CBS labels. Thanks to Peter Denzler for information and scans. |
"Lay, Lady, Lay"/"Peggy Day" - 7" mono singles, CBS 4434 (Israel), 1969:
CBS 4434 (Israel) - front with promo stamp, scan by Hans Seegers (first release) |
This single was released with three sleeve and two label variants. The first sleeve exists in a promo version with a Hebrew language sticker on the front sleeve. It has two generic rear sleeve variants, each showing six different singles by other CBS artists. The second release sleeve has a differently printed front while the generic rear has six new other artist singles printed in purple. Both records have orange CBS labels, but the second label text style is completely different from the first. This was the second and last Dylan 7" single in Israel, the first was Like A Rolling Stone/Gates Of Eden, see Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1965. |

"Lay, Lady, Lay"/"Peggy Day" - 7" mono singles, CBS 2-582 (Singapore/Malaysia), Jul 1969, re-released in 1970 and 1971:
There are three different label variants:
Gerd Rundel's first variant copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - JZSP 150045, opposite 5616, Side 2 - JZSP 150044, opposite 5615. Like the US single above, the matrix numbers in the vinyl and on the labels are lower on the B-side, as if Peggy Day was intended to be the A-side. Manuel García Jara has a copy of the third variant single intended for jukebox use that has an open centre and comes in a generic lilac/white CBS sleeve without the insert.
The limited 3CD edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs in 2008 included the book "The Collected Singles Sleeves". This single is listed there as "Made In Hong Kong" but apparently this is one of many mistakes in the book.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Hans-Juergen Zollerg, Stefan Haras, Manuel García Jara and Gerd Rundel for information and pictures.
"Lay, Lady, Lay"/"I Threw It All Away" - 7" mono single, CBS BA 301258 (Greece), 1969:
CBS BA 301258 (Greece) - A-side scan by Hans Seegers |
Dylan releases were very rare during the Greek "colonels" regime, and this must have been regarded as non-political. CBS records were distributed by a company called "Music-box" in Athens. This single contained the album tracks from Nashville Skyline, and had orange CBS labels. There are two label variations: the first (not shown) has no space between "Produced by Bob Johnston" and the CBS logo, the second (shown) has 4mm space. For details of the same single released in mono in the USA and Canada in 1973 in the "Hall Of Fame" series, see International Mono 7" Singles 1970-76. For details of the same single released in stereo in the UK in 1976 in the "Hall Of Fame" series, see US & International 7" & 12" Singles & EPs 1974-76. For the CBS Greece "Music-box" sleeve for this record, see 7" Single Sleeves. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. |

This rare 1970 single from Costa Rica has the same B-side as the Greek single above. It was made for CBS by Industrio de Discos Centroamericana, S.A. (Indica). As well as the commercial single, Manuel has found a promo copy on eBay from a Mexican seller, CHCD-MEX, which has "EXITO [HIT]" handwritten on the A-side and a promo stamp on the B-side. Both records come in a CBS/Indica sleeve as shown, also see 7" Single Sleeves. Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and pictures. |

These Mexican EPs are now very rare!
CBS EPC 978 (Mexico) - front scan by Hans Seegers |
This mono EP contains Lay, Lady, Lay; To Ramona; My Back Pages; It Ain't Me, Babe, from Nashville Skyline and Another Side Of Bob Dylan. Jim Siddy says all the tracks are faded out! Lay, Lady, Lay - 3:08 (album track is 3:17); To Ramona - 3:26 (album track is 3:52); My Back Pages - 2:13 (album track is 4:23); It Ain't Me, Babe - 2:12 (album track is 3:34). These are therefore rarities so the EP is also listed in 1969. |

The sleeve is folded, not sealed, and comes with the record inside a clear poly bag. The record has orange CBS labels with text that looks as if it has been added with a rubber stamp, as it's become smudged, especially on the B-side.
Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans and confirming this EP is definitely mono. Thanks to Jim Siddy for further information.
