All international releases of this 7" single with
George Jackson on both sides are listed here,
although some were not released until 1972. For other Columbia vinyl releases
including the "Big Band" version of George Jackson,
see 1972. I have counted all the singles on this page as one
occurrence each of the rarities. All releases were in stereo. International releases with picture sleeves use photos from The Concert For Bangladesh, Madison Square Garden, New York, NY, 1 Aug 1971, also used on the cover of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 2. For the Apple release of the evening Bangladesh concert, see 1972. Both tracks are part of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, see Online Performances (Other). The Acoustic version appeared on the 2013 2CD set Side Tracks, included with The Complete Album Collection Vol. One, see 2013. |
"George Jackson" - 7" promo singles, Columbia 4-45516 (USA), 12 Nov 1971:
R-0084 George
Jackson - "Big Band" version -
lyrics on bobdylan.com
here
This was the A-side in most countries
R-0085 George
Jackson - Acoustic version
This was the B-side in most countries, although the promo US singles and
the UK single
(without a picture sleeve) have the Acoustic version
as the A-side - see below
There are six variants of the promo US single, differences are as follows (publisher details are illustrated from the Acoustic version since two of the records have that on both sides):
2A "NOT FOR RESALE" AND "RADIO STATION COPY" printed above the centre hole, Acoustic Version R-0085 on both sides, "SPECIAL RUSH RESERVICE" not printed to the right of the centre hole, publisher is shown as "RAM'S HORN MUSIC (ASCAP)" (this is even rarer than variant 1A). The copy shown has a rubber stamped date of "DEC 1971".
2B "NOT FOR RESALE" AND "RADIO STATION COPY" printed above the centre hole, R-0085 on the A-side, R-0084 on the B-side, publisher is shown as "Ram's Horn Music, Inc. (BMI)
2C "NOT FOR RESALE" AND "RADIO STATION COPY" not printed above the centre hole, R-0085 on the A-side, R-0084 on the B-side, publisher missing
Sergio Mariano Romay has found a "blue vinyl DJ copy" being offered for sale online by an Italian seller - as far as I know no blue vinyl copies were ever produced an this is 100% fake!
LP/CD releases of George Jackson:
R-0084 is on the 1972 CBS Venezuela compilation Grandes Exitos De Bob Dylan, the Nov 1972 Japanese compilation Bob Dylan: Gift Pack '73 (for both see 1972), the 1974 CBS/Sony Japan compilation Gold Disc (see 1974), the 1976 Venezuelan compilation Exitos De Ayer Vol. VII [Hits Of Yesterday Vol. VII] (see 1976), the 1978 Japanese/Australian compilation Masterpieces (see 1978), and on the Japanese limited release items Mr. D's Collection #1 (LP), #2 (EP) and #3 (CD) - see 1974 for #1, 1976 for #2, and 1993 for #3. It is also on the 2CD Japanese compilation Dylan Ga Rock (1993 release only, not the 2010 release), the German CD compilation 1971: Ein Jahr Und Seine 20 Songs [1971: A Year And Its 20 Songs] (see 2006), the UK compilation CD with the book "Isis" Anthology 3 (see 2019), and the Sony Music Japan 2CD compilation The Japanese Singles Collection. see 2020. The R-0084 "Big Band" version also appeared on the Sony Music Bob Dylan Custom Mix CD web-site, Apr 2003, see Online Performances (Other). The web-site misidentified the track as R-0085. The version of R-0084 on the 1987 CD release of the 1978 Japanese/Australian set Masterpieces (see 1978) is reportedly distorted, so the later CDs are where it is to be found in the best quality.
R-0085 is on #1 and #3 of Mr. D's Collection only (see 1974 and 1993). It was also released on a "Limited Tour Edition Bonus Disc" with the 3CD compilation The Essential Bob Dylan in Holland, see 2003, on the Light In The Attic US CD/2LP compilation Listen, Whitey! The Sounds Of Black Power 1967-74, see 2012, on the 2013 2CD set Side Tracks, included with The Complete Album Collection Vol. One, see 2013, and on the Sony Music Holland 2CD release Top 40 Bob Dylan, see 2019.
Both R-0084 and R-0085 are included in the 42 rarities in the Aug 2006 iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, also see Online Performances (Other). An excerpt of R-0085 is included in Episode 5 of the 2021 Apple TV streamed TV series 1971 The Year That Music Changed Everything, see VHS & DVD 2020s.

"George Jackson" - 7" commercial single, Columbia 4-45516 (USA/Canada), 12 Nov 1971/CBS 4-45516 (India), 1971:
The two variants of the commercial US single are as follows: R-0084 is now the A-side, even though some US promo singles just had R-0085 on both sides (with the same two variants, see above):
Neither variant lists the publisher. Hans Seegers has a promo copy of the first variant with a white sticker with text "COMPLIMENTARY NOT FOR SALE", and a copy with a juke box strip. There was only one Canadian release of Columbia 4-45516, with orange Columbia labels.
The Indian release of CBS 4-45516 is very rare and has black CBS labels with silver text. It was manufactured for CBS records by the Gramophone Company of India Ltd., part of EMI (bought by Universal in 2012). For a copy of the generic CBS India sleeve used, see 7" Single Sleeves. For 1969 Indian singles of Lay, Lady, Lay and Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You with the same label style, see Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1969 (the singles are actually on separate sub-pages). For the very rare 1970 Indian stereo release of Wigwam, see International 7" Stereo Singles & EPs 1970.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and David Plentus for information and scans.
"George Jackson" - 7" stereo singles, S CBS 7688 (UK), 3 Dec 1971, re-released 1980s; CBS S 7688 (Ireland), 12 Nov 1971:
These singles did not have picture sleeves. The UK single is a puzzle in that the 10" test pressing of the single shown here is pressed with the "Big Band" version as the A-side (although it's not actually marked on the acetate label which version is which, the A-side plays the Big Band version, and the B-side plays the Acoustic version). However, the actual released single unusually has the Acoustic version as the A-side. This was maintained when the UK single was re-released twice in the 1980s. My orange label 1971 copy has a push-out centre, but Peter Coulthard's copy has a solid centre. James Siddy has a solid centre copy with "Big Band" labels on both sides, although one side plays the Acoustic version correctly.
The Irish single also has a solid centre, and again has the Acoustic version on the A-side. It is interesting in that the publisher credit changed on 1 Jan 1972, with text "B. Feldman & Co. Ltd. As of the 1st January, 1972, Publisher credit to be Big Ben Music Ltd.".
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Ronald Born, Peter Coulthard and James Siddy for information and scans.
"George Jackson" - 7" promo and commercial singles, CBS S 7688 (West Germany), 3 Dec 1971:
The West German single has the "Big Band" version as the A-side. The promo version has the regular single inside the sleeve. For the generic "CBS-Blitzinformation" rear sleeve of the German promo single, see 7" Single Sleeves.
Ronald Born's promo copy in the "Blitzinformation" sleeve has a stamp on the A-side with text "Unverkäufliche Musterplatte [Sample Record not for Sale]".
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Ronald Born for information and scans.
"George Jackson" - 7" promo and commercial singles, CBS 7688 (NL/Sweden), 3 Dec 1971:
CBS 7688 (NL):
There are actually four equally slapdash variations of the labels of the Dutch single!
It seems that CBS in Holland obtained two different print runs of the labels and combined them randomly on the records! The sleeve variations seem to be used at random with different records also.
CBS 7688 (Sweden):
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Lars M. Banke for information and scans.
"George Jackson" - 7" promo and commercial singles, CBS 7688 (France), 4 Dec 1971, re-released late 1970s/early 1980s:
The French release of CBS 7688 had the "Big Band" version on the A-side and came with two different records, with the regular orange paper labels and with orange-brown injection "labels", which I'd date from late 1970s/early 1980s. For an injection label a thin coloured plastic ring-shaped layer is injected into the record itself, and the text/graphics cut out using a stamp so that the black vinyl underneath shows through, there is no paper label. The sleeve was the same for both releases.
Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.
"George Jackson" - 7" promo and commercial singles, CBS BA 301340 (Greece), Dec 1971:
"George Jackson" - 7" promo and commercial singles, CBS BA-221876 (Australia)/CBS BA 461377 (New Zealand), Dec 1971:
These releases had no picture sleeves, and have the "Big Band" version as the A-side. The records have orange CBS labels. The Australian promo release is the commercial record with red promo stamps on each label.
Thanks to Bill Hester for information and to Hans Seegers for further information and scans.
"George Jackson" - 7" commercial singles, CBS 7688 (Spain), 1971/1972:
CBS 7688 (Spain) - front scan by Hans Seegers (both releases) |
This single was released first in 1971 and then re-released
in 1972. It had the "Big Band" version as the A-side. The 1972
release had a slightly different rear sleeve. The rear sleeve differences
are in the copyright text on the bottom edge: 1971: "(E) ["E" in a circle] Offset ALG - San Raimundo, 31 - Madrid-20" 1972: "(E) Madrid 1972 Offset ALG - San Raimundo, 31 - Madrid-20" The records were the same and had orange CBS labels dated 1971. They were made in Spain for CBS by CIA Gramófono-Odeón SAE, who also made the 1972 Spanish Tribute To Woody Guthrie Part One album, see here. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. |

"George Jackson" - 7" promo and commercial singles, CBS 7688 (Italy), 19 Jan 1972:
The rear sleeve of the Italian single advertises the Sony "SQ" Quadraphonic system, then being launched. Hans Seegers' promo copy of the Italian single is unusual in that it has a triangular hole punched right through it, which goes through the record as well as the sleeve. Luckily the hole is in the centre part of the record through the label and not through the playable part! François Guillez's jukebox copy has a hole punched through the sleeve but the record is the same as the commercial copy.
Both promo and commercial records had orange CBS labels.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and François Guillez for information and scans.
"George Jackson" - 7" stereo singles, CBS 7688 (Portugal), 1972:
Label variations:
"GEORGE JACKSON << Big Band/Acoustic Version >>" on one line, "Produção de Bob Dylan"
"GEORGE JACKSON << Big Band/Acoustic Version >>" on two lines, "P. de Bob Dylan"
All the records had orange CBS labels. François Guillez has a promo copy of the first release record with a sticker in Portuguese and English on the A-side. The B-side is the same as the commercial release and it comes in a generic CBS sleeve.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and François Guillez for information and scans.
"George Jackson" - 7" stereo single, CBS 7688 (Norway/Denmark), 1972:
"George Jackson" - 7" stereo singles, CBS 7688 (Yugoslavia), 1972:
The Yugoslav single again had "Big Band" version R-0084 as the A-side and was manufactured for CBS Records by Suzy Records of Zagreb (now Croatia). There are two rear sleeve variations - the second has a "65" in a ring of circles below and to the left of the CBS logo. Both records had orange CBS labels.
Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.
"George Jackson" - 7" promo and commercial singles, CBS/Sony SOPA 1 (Japan), 1972:
"George Jackson"/"Lay, Lady, Lay" - 7" single, CBS 15.054 (Venezuela), 1972:
CBS 15.054 (Venezuela) - front scan by Hans Seegers |
Full details of this single with R-0084 as the A-side (although not
identified as the "Big Band" version) are in
1972. There were two record label variants and it was
also sold in Peru. For a Venezuelan Dylan compilation with R-0084
also see
1972. Thanks to Hans Seegers and Ronald Born for information and scans. |
