Sergio Mariano Romay has found a "blue vinyl DJ copy" being offered for sale online by an Italian seller - as far as I know no blue vinyl copies were ever produced an this is 100% fake!

here The B-side is the regular version of Lay, Lady, Lay from Nashville Skyline. Hans Seegers informs me this is the rarest world-wide version of George Jackson! This single came in an orange "DISCOS CBS" sleeve with a folded black-and-white insert with a copy of "Soledad Brother", the book of prison letters by George Jackson (shown on left) which is believed to have inspired Bob to write the song. There are two small label variations in that "P-1972" is either present below the catalogue number on the left or missing. Manuel García Jara has a copy of the book and single bought in Peru in 1973 which came in a brown paper bag with the Milton Glaser illustration. Both the sleeve and the A-side of the record have stamps with "EXP" indicating an export. The single label variant is the one without the "(P)-1972". R-0084 is not identified as the "Big Band" version. |

This is a rare album with a quirky song selection released only in
Venezuela! The front sleeve uses the same black and white version of the 1967
Milton Glaser poster as the George Jackson single
above.
There were two releases in 1972, of which the first is the rarest, Both use the
same sleeve, but the record labels are noticeably different, both in the album
title and the text left and right of the centre hole. The album title on the
first release record labels is just Grandes Exitos [Big Hits], on
the second release record labels it's Los Mas Grandes Exitos De Bob Dylan
[Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits] while it's referred to in the rear sleeve
text as Los Mas Grandes Exitos De Bob Dylan Vol. I [Bob Dylan's
Greatest Hits Vol. I]. Lars M. Banke has noticed that Wigwam is misspelled “Wigwan” on both the front and rear sleeved and the Side 1 labels of all pressings. There is also a track mistake - track 5 on Side 2 El Hombre Pandereta [Mr. Tambourine Man] is actually the cover version by The Byrds! |

Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy of the second release with a front price sticker of 28.00 Bolivars ($6.51 at the official "non-essential" goods exchange rate of 4.3 Bolivars to the US dollar). Simon Blokker has a second release copy with the same front price sticker and an additional front sticker as shown at top right.

*Geoff Lambourn tells me that on his copy of the 1972 release this track is actually the cover version by The Byrds! I don't know if this mistake is repeated on the later release.
The rear sleeve drawing had previously been used on a UK EP in 1966. The rear sleeve text reads: "Besides offering new recordings, Greatest Hits of Bob Dylan Vol. I confirms that Bob Dylan is the most important composer of his generation. This retrospective collection is essential for anyone seriously interested in music and culture of our times."
The record of Manuel García Jara's first release copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-10.118-A 13-IV-72, Side 2 - CBS-10.118-B 13-IV-72 (dated 13 Apr 1972). The record of both Gerd Rundel's and Sergio Mariano Romay's second release copies have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-10.118-A, Side 2 - CBS-10.118-B.
The late 1970s release comes in the same sleeve, but the record has orange/yellow "sunburst" CBS labels. The album title on the record labels is again Los Mas Grandes Exitos De Bob Dylan [Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits].

R-0475-2 Lay, Lady, Lay - 3:09 edit of album version (3:18) This incredibly rare single, probably the rarest Bob Dylan single of all, was made for CBS by Valentin de Carvalho CI-SARL of Luanda, Angola, and dates from when Angola was a Portuguese colony. It is the only known Dylan release in this country, although there were some releases with Dylan covers. This is because there was only one pressing plant in the country and almost all records were imported from Portugal. Only Portuguese citizens in Angola could afford to buy records at that time! The record has regular orange CBS labels with two logos. Unusually the labels are each in four segments pasted on to the vinyl. There is a red stamp on the rear sleeve from a record shop in Lobito, a town in Angola. Apparently only 20-30 copies were pressed and sent to radio stations, but a few copies such as this one reached record shops. Both tracks are in very poor quality - Lay, Lady, Lay fades out at 3:09 after Bob stops singing (the album version is 3:18). The single originally came with a typewritten insert in Portuguese promoting Simon & Garfunkel's Greatest Hits album and Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 2 and mentioning that both tracks were produced by Bob Johnston (who isn't mentioned on the record labels or sleeve). Bob appears again as "Blind Boy Grunt" on this retrospective album with four previously unreleased performances from the 1960s. I previously had it listed as being released in Nov 1971, but both the sleeve and the record labels date the album as 1972. For the first Broadside album with Bob as "Blind Boy Grunt", see 1963. This Broadside album is now available by mail order from Smithsonian
Folkways
All tracks are
reportedly remastered and a vast improvement over the original album.
However, they can only supply CD-R copies of the original albums. Thanks to
Jack from Canada and Andrew Wellman for scans of the CD-R releases. The CD-Rs
were originally housed in a Folkways slipcase as shown (the same for each
title), and came with photocopies of the original artwork. Now they come in
generic gatefold thick card sleeves with the original artwork on a sticker
on the front and overlapping half the back. Thanks to Andrew Wellman for
scans of the latest release.
Thanks to Jean-Pol Heirnaux for finding a Smithsonian cassette version on eBay. It comes in a black plastic case with the booklet folded in four inside. Jean-Pol also informs me that much of the Broadside/Folkways music is now downloadable from the Smithsonian Folkways site. However, none of the tracks by Blind Boy Grunt are included. Thanks to Juan B. Heinink for the information via Roger Ford about this EP and single, and to Hans Seegers for much additional information and scans. Juan says this was originally intended to be an EP given away with the first Spanish release of Blonde On Blonde, with Positively 4th Street and Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window (never before released in Spain) and the live B-side version of Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues from Liverpool, 1966 (R-0054, see below). However the EP was never issued, although a few sleeveless copies left the factory and circulate amongst collectors (Gerd Rundel has a copy of the withdrawn EP in a generic CBS Spain sleeve, see 7" Singles Sleeves). Instead a single was released with the same catalogue number (perhaps by mistake) and a unique but misleading fold-out picture sleeve, with one song per side. The title of the single is misleading, because The Band do not play on Positively 4th Street. "CBS 9131" appears only on the front sleeve at top right, the replacement single does not have a catalogue number! Both the EP and single were manufactured by COFASA, Madrid, on behalf of Discos CBS.
The contents of the EP were:
A-side: Positively 4th Street; Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?
The labels are dated 1971, but it did not appear until 1972. It has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 850 9131*A*1, Side 2 - 850 9131*B*1. I mistakenly reported the second track as R-0513, the stereo version of this track, but Juan says the mono version was used by mistake so that both right and left stereo channels are the same. Because the single is badly pressed there is distortion between the tracks which was mistaken for stereo by early reporters. "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? was pressed with a stereo matrix made from a mono magnetic tape (that is to say, it had two sound ways, but with identical information in both), and if there was occasionally a certain stereo feel it was due to an uneven reading of the needles." The performance available on Masterpieces (1978) and Biograph (1985, remastered CD reissue 1997) and the 2000 Essential Bob Dylan/Ultimate Bob Dylan compilations is from the original single and still in mono! This means the only occurrence of the stereo mix before 2015 was a Columbia US stereo acetate, R-0513, see 1965. The single version released in Nov 2015 on the 18CD Collector's Edition of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (CD10, track 12) is in stereo and has been remixed from the original tapes. R-0513 will still remain a rarity, because of the limited availability of this massive set.

is not only longer at 6:51, but slightly clipped at the beginning when compared with the versions on Masterpieces and The Band: A Musical History.
This is confirmed by Peter Coulthard and Roger Ford, who say that the first two
bars of the performance on the 1966 mono single and subsequent releases of
R-0054 up to 2016 were spliced in from the
performance of Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues from the ABC Theatre, Belfast,
Northern Ireland, 6 May 1966! This means that track 8 on CD14 of
The 1966 Live Recordings
is not the same as R-0054, and now has a new R-number, R-1906.
Sadly, because of a second error, the B-side actually contains the studio version of It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry from Highway 61 Revisited!
Gerd Rundel's copy of the EP has stamped matrix numbers: Side A - 850 9131*A*1, Side B - 850 9131*B*1.

The song is abbreviated (1:17 playing time only) but the complete lyrics of the Ginsberg poem are included in the magazine. The poem is about the plight of refugees fleeing the Bangladesh War from Jessore in what was then East Pakistan towards India in 1971 - the same catastrophe that inspired George Harrison's "Concert for Bangladesh", see above and here. There are a total of 17 such tracks on the flexi-disc. Alternate takes of September On Jessore Road are available in full on the Allen Ginsberg 1994 Rhino Word Beat boxed set Holy Soul Jelly Roll: Poems And Songs 1949-1993 (R-0235, see 1994) and Allen Ginsberg's Omnivore Records 3CD boxed set The Last Word On "First Blues" (R-1650, see 2016). There is also a version recorded for Allen Ginsberg's 1983 album September On Jessore Road, but that version is without Bob.

The order of the songs on the LPs is not chronological with Carnegie Hall 1968 on Part One and Hollywood Bowl 1970 on Part Two - the three shows have been edited into a "complete performance" so that performances from each appear on each album. Even though Bob is not credited on the Part Two sleeve, presumably for contractual reasons, best information (such as Glen Dundas' "Tangled Up In Tapes"/"Tangled") is that he does appear on the ensemble songs.

Bound For Glory (adapted Woody Guthrie) - Bob and The Band with
Arlo Guthrie and ensemble, afernoon show (Side 1, track 1)
I misreported this song before - it is truncated on both the original album and the
1989 single CD release,
with only the Arlo
Guthrie introduction to the song remaining (Side 1 track 1). Bob and The Band are accompanying Arlo
but the actual song with their vocal contributions is omitted! Glen Dundas in
"Tangled Up In Tapes" (later published as just "Tangled") attributes this to the
evening show, but Dean Chambers has tapes of both shows and says it is from the
afternoon show. This is supported by Michael Krogsgaard in "Master of the
Tracks", who attributes R-0064 - R-0067 to the afternoon show.
Thanks to Harold Lepidus for information in Dec 2013 that Bill Pagel of Boblinks fame is working with Nora Guthrie, daughter of Woody, and Bear Family Records to release all three of the 1968 and 1970 shows of the Tribute To Woody Guthrie in full. Bob appeared with The Band at Carnegie Hall, New York, Jan 1968, for three songs, I Ain't Got No Home, Dear Mrs. Roosevelt and The Grand Coulee Dam, and also participated in the ensemble finale songs This Land Is Your Land from the matinee and This Train Is Bound For Glory from the evening show. There was also a show at the Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, CA, in 1970, but Bob did not participate. Highlights from these three shows were released in 1972 on Columbia (Part One with the three afternoon show performances from Bob and The Band but only a truncated This Train Is Bound For Glory) and Warner Bros (Part Two with This Land Is Your Land), with songs from the three shows spread over both releases out of performance order. As these releases are unsatisfactory and omit Bob and The Band's 1968 evening performances a new complete release of the shows is well overdue.

The 2017 Bear Family 3CD boxed set contains two books in a card slipcase, one with pockets for the discs on the inside rear. The 1968 and 1970 concerts are now ordered chronologically, so that all three of Bob's songs with The Band from the 1968 New York afternoon concert are together on CD1, with the ensemble This Train Is Bound For Glory (which is still sadly truncated, this time at 1:16) at the start of CD1 and the ensemble This Land Is Your Land at the end of CD1 (also still not in full). The 1970 Hollywood Bowl concert is on both CD2 and CD3, with material not released on the original 1972 releases including new 1970 ensemble versions without Bob of This Train Is Bound For Glory and This Land Is Your Land. There is no new 1968 material, and the extra 1970 material does not include any Dylan contributions, as he was not present.

Bob was not credited directly on the sleeve of this album, except in the "Thanks" line (see rear detail scan), but the liner notes to the 1998 Columbia Legacy compilation CD The Player: A Retrospective, on which this track also appears in a remastered/remixed version, state "Bob Dylan (harmonica)", see 1998. Kenneth Robson has two copies of the US album, the first has catalogue number "C 31104" on the front and rear sleeve and the record labels, while the second has "31104" on the front sleeve and "PC 31104" on the rear sleeve and record labels. The sleeve of the earlier album is rough textured card, while the sleeve of the later album is smooth.

The Canadian release of this album has the same catalogue number and artwork as the US release. The rear sleeve has the Canadian copyright text and a sticker of a record shop from Edmonton, Alberta. The usual text "LITHO IN CANADA" is printed on the spine. The record has 1970s style Columbia labels, used in the USA since 1970 but not in Canada until this year, where they still used labels with the "360 SOUND STEREO" design: in fact, the Canadian release of A Tribute To Woody Guthrie Part One (above) still has labels with "360 SOUND STEREO", so this David Bromberg album must have been released later than the Woody Guthrie tribute album. |

These three singles had both mono and stereo versions of the same two tracks. The first two both have the same catalogue number, BDA-326. The third single has the later catalogue number of BDA-369.

This set comes in a handsome silver box with a blue obi. Information from Shawn Chambers: "This is Vol. 9 in the Gift Pack '73 Series issued Nov 1972 to commemorate the fourth anniversary of CBS/Sony. It is a limited edition 2-record box set issued with a 12 page booklet and a 1973 CBS/Sony artist calendar." The records come in "Gift Pack Series" paper inner sleeves. |

Lars M. Banke writes: "I have a Canadian promo flexi-disc/picture cardboard disc issued by Columbia Special Products in Ontario, Canada, which includes a fragment of a Dylan track plus eight other fragments of other artists' tracks. Listeners are invited to identify the nine artists and take part in a contest which closes November 30th, 1972. Fifty winners will be drawn and each will win a Columbia LP of the winners choice. The purpose of the disc is - as far as I understand the liner notes - to promote the use of Columbia Auravision products in advertising and marketing campaigns etc. Unfortunately I cannot tell you the title of the Dylan track as my copy is unused. In order to play the disc you have to push out the centre hole which isn't done on my copy. I hope that it will be possible to identify the track without doing this!"

The third US commercial release must have been issued not long after the second release because it still has a composite sleeve with a printed paper slick glued over the cardboard sleeve. The record labels are different from those of the promo and second commercial releases: |

This album was first released on CD by Sequel in the UK with the bonus Dylan track Election Year Rag (R-0111, see Oct 1972 above) in 1990, and in a remastered version with two bonus live no Dylan tracks by Buddha Records in July 1999. I've included the 1999 release here instead of on the 1999 page because the Dylan content is the same as the LP releases above. |

There's some confusion about the spelling of the name of the record company. It was spelled as "Buddah" Records in the 1970s, but this spelling is in fact wrong. In the 1990s, when it was acquired by the BMG group, the label was given a new logo and the spelling of its name was changed to the correct "Buddha" Records. Thanks to Hanns Peter Bushoff of BMG (now Sony Music) for information.
