Signed copy of the US 3LP boxed set
Because of the length of the 1972 page, this sub-page contains all the entries for this release, both the original 1972 3LP releases, tape releases, and the 1991 CD releases of the original album. For details of original VHS video and DVD releases of the feature film, omitting Mr. Tambourine Man (R-0078) but with an excerpt of If Not For You from the rehearsal (R-0484), see VHS & DVD 1970s. For the remastered CD version with a bonus track, see 2005, for the 2005 expanded DVD release see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 3. (The 2000s releases warrant separate entries as they have new material.)

Manuel García Jara dates the release
as Dec 1971, but it does not appear to have been widely available until the New
Year. The two concert performances in New York City in Aug 1971 were
organised by George Harrison to raise international awareness and fund relief
efforts for refugees from Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) and the Bangladesh
Liberation War. All profits from the sale of albums and videos go to the George
Harrison Fund for UNICEF.

This is an Apple album and it should have been made and distributed worldwide by EMI/Capitol but there were some legal problems with Columbia Records due to Bob's inclusion. Finally, this set was manufactured and distributed in vinyl format only by EMI/Capitol just in the USA; US tapes and all the other worldwide releases were made and distributed by Columbia/CBS. For this reason, reissues of this album were released by EMI/Capitol in the USA (SAAB 12248) and by Epic (part of Sony) in Europe (EPC 468835-1 below). However, US copies were also exported to many other countries. |

No singles were released from the concert in 1972, but George Harrison had already released a studio version of the song Bangla Desh performed as the concert's finale. Joan Baez was not at the concert, but released her own Song Of Bangladesh 7" stereo single (right), see Honourable Mentions.

The afternoon show had a slightly different Dylan tracklist: A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall; Blowin' In The
Wind; It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry; Love Minus Zero/No Limit
and Just Like A Woman. A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall and Love Minus Zero/No Limit
were broadcast by a New York radio station, and all the tracks circulate
unofficially amongst Dylan fans. Love Minus Zero/No Limit from the afternoon show
was released as a bonus track on remixed Epic 2CD set release (R-0722,
see
2005). Gerd Rundel has found a very highly priced single-sided disc on eBay with the Dylan afternoon show that Arie de Reus confirms to be a genuine A&M acetate from 1972 (A&M recorded both the afternoon and evening concerts). |

The officially released 3LP set comes in a 12" orange-brown box with a separate lid and bottom tray, and comes with a full-sized 64-page booklet with many pictures of Bob, some of which were used for the cover of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 2 in Nov 1971, see International Albums (Regular).

Unfortunately for collectors, individual country releases are almost identical and there is no way to distinguish one from another: most of them have the same cloth-covered card box, the same 64-page booklet and the same record labels without a country of release. |

The US release is noticeable because of the arrangement of record sides! In all worldwide releases the Dylan set is always on Side 5. The US version has been made for auto-changer record players: Record 1 has Sides 1 and 6; Record 2 has Sides 2 and 5, and Record 3 has sides 3 and 4. (Some worldwide Asylum 2LP copies of Before The Flood and all 2LP copies of The Basement Tapes were also made for auto-changers, with Record 1 having Sides 1 and 4, and Record 2 having Sides 2 and 3). Therefore the Dylan set is on Side 2 of Record 2 of the US set (this distribution is also present in several countries such as Australia below). My UK copy has the regular distribution of sides: Record 1 has Sides 1 and 2, Record 2 has Sides 3 and 4, and Record 3 has Sides 5 and 6, so the Dylan set is on Side 1 of Record 3. However, I am now told this is very rare, and most European copies have the auto-changer arrangement of sides. |

Thanks to Gerd Rundel for finding an Apple US acetate on eBay. This is sides 5 and 6 and comes in a card sleeve with a label from Sterling Labs, New York. The record has green/white Apple labels with a mixture of typed and handwritten text. Steven Fant has a very rare uncut label sheet with all six US record labels measuring 12½" x 8½".
US copies were exported to many countries and because there is no country of release anywhere on box, booklet or labels, it has created much confusion for collectors: copies bought in different countries (Italy, Yugoslavia, Venezuela, Singapore, India) are all identical (even the matrix numbers); all of them are US copies, not individual country releases. Note that high-priced copies sold on eBay purporting to come from countries like India are not local releases, they are only US copies imported to and sold there and have no special collectable value. There is a genuine Indian release made by EMI, but it is very difficult to find.
Manuel García Jara has genuine copies of the original Apple release (not exported US albums) made in the following countries: USA, Mexico (two different boxes), Brazil, Argentina (two different releases, one is a boxed set; the other comes in a threefold sleeve), Uruguay (threefold sleeve), South Africa, UK, Holland, Spain (two different), Israel (two different) and Philippines (two different). He also has Japanese and Canadian releases but they have something in common: the boxes and booklet were printed there but the records themselves were made in the USA (in contrast to the UK, where the box was printed in the UK, but the records were made in England.

This very rare reel-to-reel tape release comes in a hinged orange stiff card box. The
tape reel is of light grey plastic
with a white paper label. The tape runs at the slower speed of 3¾
i.p.s. to give the longer playing length required to get all three LPs on
one tape. The pack originally included a postcard to send off to
Apple to obtain the 12" booklet that came with the 3LP set free of charge,

This set of two 8-track tape cartridges comes in an orange
card box, shown flattened. The cartridges themselves are of orange plastic
with white paper labels. This rare first issue two cassette set came in an outer card box which had a flap which could be torn off and sent to Apple to obtain the 12" booklet that came with the 3LP set free of charge. It is very unusual to find the box with the flap still present, because it means the original purchaser did not bother to send for the booklet! Shown left is a sealed copy with a sticker for "85.20". This was not the price! The insides of the two inserts shown are blank. |

Keith Venturoni explains: "Did you know that Capitol printed up a 2LP set of the Concert for Bangladesh in 1982? If you time out the 3 record set it runs around 94 minutes, so it would fit on two discs. However, they could never get all the legal mess sorted out with regard to money so it was never released. However, the story I read was that a record store had an order for 300 standing, and they would call from time to time inquiring on the status of the order. Most of the time they got the standard answer that the record was not released yet. One time they got a hold of a guy that noticed the records were in the warehouse, and sent the order out. The story is that Capitol then destroyed the rest. I've got a copy - the cover looks pretty much the same, it is just in the traditional 2 record set gatefold cover. One difference with regard to the Dylan material is that it is split between side 3 and 4 with one song on side 3 and the rest on 4, as opposed to all being on side 5 with the 3 record set."
Thanks to Arie de Reus for the photos of his two sealed copies. His copies are both marked to show they're not to be sold - the first example is cut and the second example has a hole punched through the sleeve. Arie has now opened the second copy and scans of the inside of the gatefold sleeve and the record labels are shown. Thanks to Sergio Mariano Romay for finding a copy on eBay sold by Robert Paris that is not a promo. This was accompanied by a story of how he persuaded Capitol to sell him 212 2LP copies which had not been marked as promos and have now sold out.

This sealed "20th Anniversary" copy containing digitally remastered cassettes
comes in a "long box" and was made by Columbia under licence from Apple.
This was part of the royalties deal between Columbia and EMI, whose Apple

Like in Japan below, the three records of this set were imported from USA but the box itself was made in Canada. This box has a lighter orange colour with "Litho In Canada") printed on the spine. The booklet may have been printed in Canada but has no country of origin. The records are exactly the same as the US records (with the same side arrangement) but are shown for completion. Lutz Haertlein has an unusual copy bought around 1978 in West Germany. The records were made the the UK as below, the booklet was printed in the USA (stated on page 63), but the box was made in Canada and has "LITHO IN CANADA" as shown on right printed inside the top flap of the lid. |

I understand from Denis Shabes of PNP Records that my copy is in fact very rare - most UK records came in "auto-changer" style with Sides 1 and 6 on Record 1, Sides 2 and 5 on Record 2, and Sides 3 and 4 on Record 3! However, Lars M. Banke's UK copy has the same record sides order as mine. The insides of the top and bottom of my box are the same orange brown as the outsides, but Denis Shabes says that later boxes had white insides, still with the circular stamp with "PRINTED IN U.S.A." inside the lid as shown above left.

The packaging of the Dutch set looks identical to the packaging of my UK set, but the records were made in Holland. Dutch copies were exported to the rest of Europe. The sides have the same non auto-changer ordering as my UK copy, with Sides 1 and 2 on Record 1, etc. |

This rare release of The Concert For Bangladesh is the Dutch release from above with a sticker on front of the box with the text "Sonderauflage Deutscher Schallplattenclub [Special Edition for German Record Club]" and a new catalogue number “28 156-8”. There is a sticker on the spine covering the old catalogue number and another on the Side 1 record label only (Side 5 with Bob's set is shown for comparison, same as that of the Dutch release). As in the rest of the world, this set was out of print in Holland for a long time. It was reissued in Holland in 1991 by Epic Records, part of Sony Music, under the royalties deal between Columbia and EMI, whose Apple label released the original 1972 vinyl and tape sets (and also in Spain, see below). Epic Records had always been part of CBS and records of this company were made and distributed by CBS. It has a wide single sleeve that reproduces the artwork of the booklet, not the original brown/orange box like in the US reissue. The rear sleeve has the tracklist. Surprisingly, the set includes a CD-sized booklet (see my copy of Epic 468835 2 below), not the original 12" booklet. |

The Dutch Epic 1991 set is very similar to the Spain release below but the record labels have a different text layout. The rear sleeve of this copy has a sticker with “CB|233” below the barcode at top right, but the original printed “CB|253” can be seen under the sticker. The rear of the CD-sized booklet has a different catalogue number on the bottom (“01-468835-10” instead of "468835-1"). A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall is mistitled "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" on the rear sleeve and on the Side 5 record label. However, unlike on the Epic 1991 Spanish release below, Jumpin' Jack Flash is correctly credited to "M. Jagger" on the Side 4 record label. The records of this copy have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01 468835 20 1A1, Side 2 - 01 468835 20 1B1, Side 3 - 01 468835 20 1C1, Side 4 - 01 468835 20 1D1, Side 5 - 01 468835 20 1E1, Side 6 - 01 468835 20 1F1.

This first Spanish release is the most common: it was a hit in Spain (#3 on 6 Mar 1972). The Spanish box is wider than any other in the world (see scans below). It includes the usual booklet and khaki inner sleeves. The Spanish labels are based on the Dutch labels and list the same copyright organisations as above, but not the Spanish "SGAE". The English copyright text in the circumference is identical to that of the Dutch labels, but has in addition "Fabricado en España por COFASA - Madrid" and "Permiso Num. 7053" (this is the licence number given by the Spanish Government to CBS; this number is the same for all CBS releases and all Spanish Dylan albums made by CBS have this same number). The Spanish record labels also have the "Depósito Legal" number, this time exclusive to each release, to the right of the centre hole. Like the other two European releases, the records of this Spanish set have the regular arrangement: Record 1 (Sides 1 & 2), Record 2 (Sides 3 & 4) and Record 3 (Sides 5 & 6). The Dylan set is on side 1 of Record 3.

This album was a hit in Spain and, although it was very expensive, all copies were sold out and this set was unavailable in Spanish record shops by late 1972. For this reason, CBS manufactured additional copies of this album in early 1973. The quantity of copies was limited and this second release is rare. This time they were made in the brand new pressing plant of CBS itself in Alcorcón, near to Madrid. The record labels are essentially identical to those of the first release made by COFASA, apart from the new text in the circumference: "FABRICADO EN ESPAÑA POR CBS S.A. - MADRID" instead of "FABRICADO EN ESPAÑA POR COFASA - MADRID". |

Surprisingly, the set includes a CD-sized booklet (see my copy of Epic 468835 2 below), not the original 12" booklet. It's not the exactly the same booklet as in the 1991 Epic 2CD release below because it has the LP catalogue number on the rear (see detail scan). Jumpin' Jack Flash is wrongly credited to "M. This set was sold in Spain in 1973 in a very limited quantity of copies.
Before the opening of its own pressing plant in early 1973, CBS vinyl records were manufactured by COFASA and tapes by Bias, a small company from Barcelona. This company made limited cassette editions of a few Dylan album (e.g. Greatest Hits or New Morning) but CBS didn't release any more tapes until 1974 because cassette players were at the time very scarce in Spanish homes.
This set was released in 1973 when CBS had its own pressing plant; however the tapes themselves were imported from the USA (note they are identical to those of the first US cassette, even with the catalogue number stamped at bottom of both tapes). The inserts are also the same as for the US release, but they were printed in Spain as stated in the inside, by Gráficas Dauco, and are dated 1973. However the most collectable element of this set is the plastic wallet with the "Discos CBS" logo exclusively made for this release, instead of the usual card sleeve used in other countries. There was no coupon to obtain the booklet: it was given away to buyers at the moment of purchase. This set was sold through a few stores only (El Corte Inglés or Galerías Preciados) to satisfy the demand of some customers.

This
rare set has the identical
box and booklet to that of the Dutch release. The record matrix numbers are the same. The
typeface of the record labels is identical. The unique difference is "MADE IN GREECE" at
the bottom of
the labels. "MADE IN
GREECE" is printed with a different typeface and with a lighter tone; there is
even a variation of brown background colour around this text! In Manuel's opinion, this set
was made in Holland but the labels were modified in Greece: the text "MADE IN
HOLLAND" has been mechanically deleted and the text "MADE IN GREECE" has been

There was a single LP Japanese promo DJ release of this album, CBS/Sony Lite 91035, in a white sleeve with two black/white information stamps and an insert. Thanks to Bryan Waller for providing the following information from a Japanese auction web-site, as well as the pictures. Bryan's translation of the seller's information is: "A 1972 production, a charity concert held at George Harrison's appeal, on August 1, 1971, at New York's Madison Square Garden, was recorded. "The Concert for Bangla Desh" (LITE 91035) 14-song promotion LP (SPECIAL DJ COPY). It is the most important part of a 3-record set compiled in one. George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Leon Russell, Badfinger, Billy Preston, Ravi Shankar and others appear. "My Sweet Lord", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Here Comes the Sun", "Something", "Bangladesh", and others - 14 songs are included. The title and participating artists' names are stamped on the white cover."
The 1972 set had a silver obi with black, white and blue text and price ¥5,000 (scan of detail below, hard to read). The record matrix numbers of the copy shown are:

The three commercial sets were marketed by CBS/Sony in Japan but the records themselves have the Apple STX 3385 catalogue number. All three sets included the US 64-page booklet as shown above plus an 8-page booklet in English and Japanese. The brown boxes look the same as for the US release but have "TOKYO JAPAN" printed on the spine (see above).

Stuart
Moore has two records of an Apple Australia radio station promo set with white labels and plain
white sleeves. The record labels have only the partial title
"Bangladesh" and the record side number written in blue ballpoint pen.
On this copy the labels are stamped with the logo of DB Music!, a Melbourne,
Victoria, radio station now known as Mix 101. Side 5 (shown) with Bob's set is
on the back of Side 2, while sides 3 and 4 are on the second record. The record
with Sides 1 and 6 is missing. (As explained above for the US release, the three records had their playing sides in
this order so they could be played continuously on a record player with an
auto-changer.) Stuart also has the regular 3LP box with the 64-page booklet. The
box front has a white circular sticker with "SPECIAL PRICE $17.00".

The South African release is one of few with noticeable differences from the rest worldwide: each record is individually numbered (STCX 3385-6-7), the record labels and rear sleeve have the text "SOLE DISTRIBUTORS GRAMOPHONE RECORD COMPANY, LTD" (part of EMI) and the rear sleeve also has the Interpak logo. The most noticeable point about this release is that this 3LP set was released in a special sleeve instead of the usual cloth-covered card box. This is a single wide sleeve that opens at top and bottom with tuck-in flaps as illustrated. It includes the usual booklet as above. |

Despite the fact that most copies in India were imported from the USA, there was a very hard to find genuine Indian release, which was made by the Gramophone Company of India Ltd., part of EMI. The box is a significantly lighter orange than that of other worldwide releases, and the text on the spine is very badly aligned as shown, with the catalogue number only partly visible. The set has the same 12" booklet. The records have the US arrangement of sides: Record 1 (Sides 1 and 6), Record 2 (Sides 2 and 5) and Record 3 (Sides 3 and 4). This set was released twice in Mexico in
1972. This is the first release and it is extremely rare. This set was made
in the USA and exported to Mexico. The box itself, with the
English title on the front and the spine, and the booklet are identical
to those of the US release. The records have US matrix numbers, so must have
been made in the USA, but the record labels were printed in Mexico. These
labels have the same typeface as for the US labels with titles in English,
but the album title is the Spanish title El Concierto Para
Bangla Desh instead of the
original English title. But there is a great surprise: these records, made in the USA, have the US arrangement of sides: Record 1 (Sides 1 and 6), Record 2 (Sides 2 and 5) and Record 3 (Sides 3 and 4). However, the records were labelled as if they had the regular arrangement of sides, so all sides but Side 1 are mislabelled! The Dylan set is on Side 2 of Record 2 but this side has the Side 4 label, while the label listing the Dylan set actually is on Side 1 of Record 3 (Side 3). |

This set was quickly reissued in 1972 to solve the mistake with mislabelled copies of the first release. It is very different from the previous release and this time it was made in Mexico. The box has now the Spanish title on the front and on the spine (note "Bangla Desh" is two words), and it is unique in having the artists' names printed on the front. It doesn't include the usual booklet but, as in the Brazilian release below, there is an insert with tracklist and credits glued to the inside of the box front (impossible to be scanned) but not on the inside of the rear. |

This set was one of the first stereo albums released by CBS in Brazil. Like the Argentinean release, the box is made in one piece: the front and back are linked by the spine, not two separate pieces. The box has the usual design but has a different catalogue number printed on the spine. This release doesn't include the booklet but the tracklist (in English) and credits (in Portuguese) are printed on two inserts glued to the backs of the front and the rear of the box (not scanned). The records have the regular arrangement of sides. Each record is individually numbered. The labels have "CBS Masterworks", "Apple" and "Fab. por RCA Electronica Ltda".

This is the first of two Argentinean versions of this set.
Like the Brazilian release, the top and bottom of the box are hinged by the
spine, not separate. The box is the usual brown colour, but there is a white
printed sheet glued on front with the album title in Spanish: the country
name is "Bangla Desh", not "Bangladesh" as for other releases. (In Spanish
the name of the country known then as East Pakistan was first "Bengala
[Bengal]" as on the Side 6 record label, and then "Bangla Desh",
written as two words. There is also another piece of white paper glued on
the spine with the Spanish album title and catalogue number. This set
doesn't include the usual booklet but there is a four-page insert in Spanish
only. The records have the regular arrangement of sides (Record 1 = Sides 1
and 2, etc.), so Bob's set (Side 5) is Side 1 of Record 3. Each record is individually numbered as
"119.539", "119.540" and "119.541". The record labels have song
titles in Spanish and English, and (unusually for Argentina) the Spanish

This is the other Argentinean release of this album with a different catalogue number. It is very different from the one released as a boxed set. It has a triple gatefold sleeve, with the three panels joined at the spine, so that there are two inside gatefolds, not three folded panels in a line like other tri-fold sleeves. The outside gatefold sleeve has the same design as the regular booklet. The front has the album title translated into Spanish (there is a variant of this release with Stereo information printed on the front, also shown).
The two inner gatefold sleeves reproduce the design of the four page insert from the first release above. The inner gatefold #1 includes a monochrome map of the area and text in Spanish (pages 1 and 2 of the insert). Inner gatefold #2 has the musician credits and more Spanish text (pages 4 and 3 of the insert). It's noticeable that on the left hand side of gatefold #2 the disc catalogue numbers are still given as "119.539", "119.540" and "119.541" (the catalogue numbers of the first release discs as on page 4 of the above insert) even though these three numbers appear nowhere else in the package.
The record labels are very different from those above: there is no text in the circumference, musicians' credits are added for each track and there is a different copyright organisation ("COMAR"). However, the tracklist text has the same typeface and translations. This time the records have the US arrangement of sides: Record #1 (Sides 1 and 6), Record #2 (Sides 2 and 5) and Record #3 (Sides 3 and 4), so Bob's set (Side 5) is Side 2 of Record 2. All three records have catalogue number "12.315".
Manuel says: "This release always has been a mystery to me: "Argentina" is not on labels or on the sleeve; I know the Argentinean copyright organisation "SADAIC", I don't know anything about "COMAR"(*); my Argentinean friends don't know which release was previous. Surely this release was released in 1972 because the Uruguayan release has the same artwork (and my copy has "1972" written on rear) but it's possible that both Argentinean versions were not released simultaneously: why were two releases, very different from one another, published at the same time?".
*“COMAR” [Corporación Musical Argentina] is the “Argentinean Musical Corporation”. It was established in 1936.
However, T. J. Jenkins spoke with a person who owns this gatefold version and he says it was the initial release in Argentina. He said that the box set version came later and was a mid-seventies reissue of the album. He said he purchased the album in Argentina before the box set version was released there. Confirmation required!

The set comes as two separate cassettes, each with its own insert, inside a card outer box. The information insert is separate from the cassettes inside the card box. On Side 2 of each of the cassettes there is almost illegible promo text overprinted that says "CASSETTE PARA DEMOSTRACION - VENTA PROHIBIDA" ["CASSETTE FOR DEMONSTRATION - PROHIBITED SALE"]. The rest of the set has no indications it's a promo. The cassettes have "Sony Music" impressed on both sides and also printed on the leader tapes.

This
is the very rare version of this set released in Uruguay. It was made in
Uruguay by Sondor S.A. for Apple/CBS. It has the same catalogue number as
the second Argentinean release above and the same US arrangement of sides.
The sleeve is virtually identical to that to the second Argentinean release
with a triple gatefold sleeve, with the three panels joined by the spine,
but there are some differences: 1 - The outer gatefold also has the album title in Spanish, but there is Stereo information printed on front (the same as the second Argentinean release above). The most obvious difference is the position of the slogan "Disco es cultura": in the Uruguayan release it is printed at bottom left and above the line, while in the Argentinean sleeve it is printed at bottom right and below the line (note also the slight difference "Disco es cultura!" on the Argentinean sleeve). Apart from these details, this copy has the name of a previous owner and a date (16 Aug 1972) and also a sticker of a radio station "CX8 - Radio Sarandi/Montevideo/Discoteca" |

2 - The first inside gatefold sleeve 1 (between records 1 and 2) has a variation of the brown colour and the panel on the right has about 3cms of white colour on its left, not present in the Argentinean release.
3 - The second inside gatefold sleeve 2 (between records 2 and 3) is the most important. The left panel has the tracklist and credits but it does not have "Disco 1/2/3" and the Argentinean catalogue numbers of the box release are missing. The right panel has important text, printed vertically, with information about CBS, the usual manufacturer of CBS in Uruguay (Sondor S.A.) and the printer (As - Rincón 387).
4 - The record labels have a different typeface with very dark colours, the song titles have the same translations as on the Argentinean labels, and they include the "AGADU" logo (Asociación General de Autores del Uruguay).

The artwork, including the Spanish title on the front, is essentially identical to that of the second Argentinean release, with some slight differences:
The records have the US arrangement of sides: each record is numbered "Disco nº 1/2/3" and each side as "Lado-1/2", so it's easy to see this arrangement: e.g. "Disco nº1 Lado-6". Except for Side 1 (with a similar typeface to the Argentinean release), the other sides have very different typefaces, even though the translations into Spanish are the same as for the Argentinean release (including the strange translation of While My Guitar Gently Weeps as "Guitarra, vas a llorar [Guitar, You Are Going To Cry]". "COMAR" (Comercio Argentino) is listed as the copyright association for some tracks.

Some copies sold in
Venezuela in 1972 were imported from the USA. However, Venezuela had its own
releases of this set, one released in 1972, another in 1979 and again in
1983. This is the first release. Like in other countries, except USA, this
set was made in Venezuela by CBS/Columbia C.A. for Apple Records. It has a
gatefold sleeve, not the usual brown box, made of excellent cardboard. Like
in Uruguay and in Argentina, the front of this sleeve is identical to the
booklet, but, unlike in these countries, the album title is in English. The rear of the gatefold sleeve is unique in having a monochrome image, the same as front, not the design of rear of the original booklet. Again the album title and tracklist are in English only. The rear has the usual Apple catalogue number but also CBS/Columbia information printed inside a circle, not a sticker or a stamp, showing the price (P.V. P. Bs. 84 = Precio de Venta al Público: 84 Bolívares). There is also a shop sticker with a handwritten lower price: 59.99 Bolívares. At the bottom of the rear sleeve is text in Spanish: "Producido por..." and "Hecho en Venezuela por..." in addition to a small CBS logo. The year of release is shown as 1972. |

The inner gatefold sleeve is plain white and the right-hand panel has a cut-out centre to display the record label. The left-hand panel has a pocket to hold one record while the right-hand panel has two pockets for the other records, and there is not enough space for the booklet (the usual worldwide booklet included in this release) that must be kept inside the gatefold sleeve. The picture labels (not paper labels) are virtually identical to those of the US release, except for the detail "Hecho en Venezuela" printed at the bottom. Although the tracklist on rear shows the regular arrangement of sides, this set has the US arrangement: Record 1 (sides 1 and 6), Record 2 (sides 2 and 5) and Record 3 (sides 3 and 4), so the Dylan set is on side 2 of Record 2.

This album, released worldwide as a 3LP set, had a second release in Venezuela (and possibly in Colombia also) as three separate volumes: Vols. 1, 2 and 3, sold separately! This 1979 reissue was again made by CBS/Columbia C.A. but this time there is no mention of Apple anywhere: the sleeves have only CBS logos and the records have the usual CBS orange/yellow labels (this is the only worldwide release with these labels).
The sleeves are again made of excellent cardboard and they are similar to the first release with the design of the booklet on front and the same design on the rear in monochrome, both with the album title in English. Each record has individual catalogue numbers: CS-10.343 (Vol. 1), CS-10.344 (Vol. 2) and CS-10.345 (Vol. 3). The front of Vol. 1 has the CBS logo and catalogue number at top right and the text "Volumen I" printed at top left, but there is also a yellow sticker with the text "Vol. 1"!
The rear sleeve again has the CBS logo and catalogue number at top right, and like the first release, there is also a price ("P.V.P. Bs 55 = Precio de Venta al Público: 55 Bolívares") recommended by CBS and printed inside a circle. There is small Spanish text: "Producido por...", "Disponible en cinta...", "Hecho en Venezuela..." and the printer name: "Imprime Litomizpa".
What makes this release so bizarre is that the sleeves were printed by Litozimpa according the regular arrangement of sides (Record 1 with Sides 1 and 2, Record 2 with Sides 3 and 4, and Record 3 with Sides 5 and 6) and each album has its tracklist printed on the rear of the sleeve. However, the records were pressed by CBS with the US arrangement of sides! This means the tracklist of the sleeves and the tracklist of the record labels are different. In the case of Vol. 1 Side 1 is correct on both the sleeve and the label, but the rear sleeve says: "Side 2: 1- Wah-Wah; 2 - My Sweet Lord..." but Side 2 has the tracks of Side 6 (1 - Something and 2 - Bangladesh) on the labels and the record. The tracks of Side 2 as printed on the rear sleeve, are actually on Vol. 3 (you'd expect it to be on Vol. 2, but see below)! Because the albums were sold separately, anyone turning over the record expecting to hear My Sweet Lord would have been very disappointed! A previous owner made some corrections, writing on labels "Vol. 1" on Side 1 and "Vol. 3" on Side 2. Neither side of this record has any Dylan involvement.

Vol. 2 has its
individual catalogue number CS-10.344 printed on front. Like
Vol. 1, this second volume
has the text "Volumen II" printed at top left but there is also the text
"Vol. 2", this time in an orange sticker. As you can imagine, the problem with this record is obvious: the rear sleeve has the tracklist of regular Sides 3 and 4 (Record 2 with a regular arrangement of sides) but this release has the US arrangement of sides (Sides 3 and 4 were actually on Record 3). It seems somebody tried to solve the problem by swapping Records 2 and 3 in the sleeves. The vinyl included here is Record 3 with the US arrangement of sides, not Record 2 (if not the tracklist on the rear sleeve would have been completely different from the tracks included on the record). |

For this reason the tracklists on the rear sleeve and on the record labels are identical, but not the catalogue numbers! The catalogue number on the front and rear sleeves is CS-10.344 (Vol. 1 was CS-10.343 so Vol. 2 must be CS-10.344) but this volume, according to the US arrangement of sides, is Record 3 and for this reason the catalogue number on the record labels is CS-10.345 as if it were Vol. 3. There is a mistake on Side 2: Here Comes the Sun is shown as "Here Comes The Sum". Neither side of the record has any Dylan involvement.

This third volume is the strangest! The rear sleeve has the tracklist of regular Sides 5 (with the Dylan set) and 6. According to the US arrangement of sides, this should be Record 3 with tracks 3 and 4 , but it's actually Record 2 with Sides 2 and 5! The rear sleeve states that side 1 is the Dylan set but, because of the US arrangement, the Dylan set is actually on Side 2. The rear sleeve also says that Side 2 includes Something and Bangladesh (actually on Side 2 of Vol. 1) but Side 2 is the Dylan set, while Side 1 includes the regular Side 2 (Wah-Wah, My Sweet Lord, etc.), listed as Side 2 of Vol. 1. (Note the correction with pen on the record labels). |

The catalogue number is the logical one for the third volume CS-10.345 (on the sleeve), but with the US arrangement it is actually Record 2, so the catalogue number on the record labels is CS-10.344!

The US 2CD release was on EMI's Capitol label, but the European 2CD release in 1991 was on Sony's Epic label. Harold Lepidus informs me the final US cassette version (see above, but now unavailable) was on Columbia, as part of a royalties deal between Capitol and Columbia. Apparently a similar deal between Columbia and Warner Bros in 1993 also allowed Columbia Simon and Garfunkel tracks to appear on the Warner Bros Paul Simon 1964-1993 boxed set in exchange for Warner Bros artists being allowed to appear on the Columbia Dylan 30th Anniversary Celebration album! Thanks to Jack from Canada for the scan of the US release sticker. The Canadian 2CD set looks the same as the US set apart from a different barcode on the rear insert. Both the US and Canadian CDs have "Printed in U.S.A" at bottom right. |

The Epic European 2CD set, bought by me in the UK, was made in Austria. It again has a 36-page booklet.
Surprisingly a "reissue" of the 2CD Epic set 468835 2 (as above) was released in New Zealand (although manufactured in Austria) in early 2002. It appears to be identical in every way with the 1991 release shown here. Thanks to Bill Hester for this information.
