R-0588 Queen Jane Approximately (3:32) - live from the Supper Club, New York, late show, 17 Nov 1993
These two songs on video are from the New York Supper Club shows in 1993, an ultimately shelved TV special/video/live album project of four shows recorded over two nights by Bob in association with HBO (see Online Performances for four more songs from these shows available on bobdylan.com). For a full-screen collage of screenshots (136Kb) from these performances, see the top of this page or click here. (Seeing these is the "prize" in a game where you collect pieces of your Supper Club ticket as you explore the CD-ROM. When you have all the pieces of the ticket, you can visit the Supper Club!) Ring Them Bells from 17 Nov 1993 was released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs: Rare And Unreleased 1989-2006, Oct 2008.
R-0242 Other rare tracks
in the digitised files on this CD-ROM, not separately listed
These include several takes of
Like a Rolling Stone; an alternate take of I Shall Be Free No. 10
with an extra verse (one of the four takes on The 50th Anniversary Collection
1964, R-1172 - R-1175, see
2014); and Medicine Sunday
(an incomplete take of an early version of Temporary Like Achilles recorded in New York
with The Band, now released on the 2CD set The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 - Bob Dylan 1965-1966 The
Best Of The Cutting Edge, 2015, as well as the 6CD and 18CD sets). There are many clips from other unreleased tracks such as
the first 1994 version of My Blue-Eyed Jane
(R-0258, released on the Tribute To Jimmie Rodgers album, see 1997); Dink's Song (BDC71, released in full on bobdylan.com in Sep 2001,

(see 1994), and now also available in full
on the 2001 Japanese live compilation Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty Nine
Years Of Great Concert Performances (see 2001).
Thanks to Rob Carson for reminding me that these excerpts include Rocks
And Gravel, a different take from that on the withdrawn version of The
Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (see 1963) plus Sally
Gal and the early take of Mr. Tambourine Man with Ramblin' Jack Elliott, both now released in 2005 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 7
- No Direction Home: The Soundtrack.
Thanks to Jack from Canada for information that R-1175, take 4 of I Shall Be Free No. 10 (4:45) on the 50th Anniversary Collection 1964 (LP5, Side 2, see 50th Anniversary Collection 1964) is the exact same take as the one previously released on the CD-ROM Highway 61 Interactive where it times at 4:44 (part of R-0242). The only differences are:
1. Hwy 61 Interactive: talk before take (Tom Wilson "Rolling four", Dylan: "OK"); 50th Anniversary Collection 1964: talk has been edited out
2. Hwy 61 Interactive: shorter fade at end; 50th Anniversary Collection 1964: longer fade.
Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for information that this CD-ROM was released in the UK by Tring International PLC in association with Ergo Software. Tring International was a British company which released low-price CDs and CD-ROMs, the latter in conjunction with Ergo Software. This release was in a standard jewel case, not a box. The front insert was a single folded card. The CD-ROM itself is identical with the US release.
Thanks to Tim Dunn for information that The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 was released on 6 Nov 2015. This was available in three formats: a 2CD set, an expanded 6CD set, and a massive 18CD Limited Edition set that includes all the sessions for Like A Rolling Stone and Medicine Sunday, previously released on this Highway 61 Interactive CD-ROM.
Thanks also to Ian Woodward for information.

This CD was given away with new Compaq PCs in 1995 as a demo of the CD-Plus technology. It comes in a plain white paper sleeve. The PC-playable part allows you to play Dignity while watching the lyrics on-screen karaoke-style, and also has part of the promotional video of Series Of Dreams. R-0243 Boogie Woogie
Country Girl (Doc Pomus/Reginald Ashby) - specially recorded for this album at Ardent Studios, Memphis, TN, on
9-11 May 1994
This song was originally recorded in 1956 by Big Joe Turner, see the
Atlantic 7" mono single above. The B-side was Corrina, Corrina!
Also recorded at these sessions was My Blue-Eyed Jane (see Highway 61 Interactive below), later released with a new vocal track on the Tribute To Jimmie Rodgers album, see 1997.
The US promo CD shown came in a clear jewel case with no front insert. The CD has "PRCD 71870" incorrectly as the catalogue number on the front, but it is shown correctly as "PRCD 71878" round the centre hole. The rear insert shows it as "PRCD 71878".
The US release had a red sticker with black text on the jewel case, the German release just had a generic "Rhino" sticker. The Japanese release had an EastWest blue/black obi with light blue, yellow and white text and dated "95-4-25". The price was ¥2,400.

R-0137-4 It Ain't Me, Babe - live with the Rolling Thunder Revue, 1975, version from 4 Songs from Renaldo & Clara promo 12" EP (see 1978), also on the Japanese promo CD Mr. D's Collection # 3 (see 1993) and the 2001 Japanese live compilation Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances (see 2001). The version released in Nov 2002 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue, is a remix, so R-0137 remains a rarity. Thanks to Larry Crum for pointing this out.
Don Handy considers that this performance is different from the Harvard performance which is on The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue, and he suggest it actually comes from The Forum, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975. Both Glen Dundas and Olof Björner confirm the 20 Nov 1975 date, not 4 Dec 1975.

R-0437 Desolation Row - 4:03 edit of the standard album version from Highway 61 Revisited
Even though Bob did not appear at the 1970 Isle Of Wight
Festival, Desolation Row is included both in the film (playing over the end
credits) and as the last track on the
soundtrack album. Why was the track included?
An explanation is given by Nick Church in the CD booklet:
"Desolation Row, a song Bob
Dylan had performed at the previous year's festival, came to be
used to describe the bank of hills off to one side of the site
where many hundreds of hippies collected. They either could not
or would not pay, and this song became synonymous with their
wretched struggle with the security guards who patrolled the
festival perimeter."
Thanks to Michelle Simpson for this information. Although Bob and
the Band rattled through seventeen songs in an hour at their 1969 Isle of Wight
Festival appearance Desolation Row wasn't one of them! The complete 1969
Isle of Wight performance was included as CD3 of the 4CD limited deluxe
edition of The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971),
Aug 2013. Thirteen of the seventeen songs included are rarities, so the
4CD set is listed in 2013
(the standard 2CD set and the 3LP release do not contain these rarities).
This album was originally listed in International Compilations: Various Artist Albums 1995, because I was informed the track was the standard album version. The entry for this one release only has now been moved here, since the edit qualifies for this 1995 Rarities page. On the currently available album, Columbia/Legacy C2K 65058, the full version of Desolation Row replaces the edit, so the UK Essential CD set is the only audio release with the rarity. However, Paul S. Levine has a copy of EDF CD 327 which has the full version of Desolation Row as originally reported. I can only assume that initial copies such as Olav Langum's shown here had the 4:03 edit but it was later replaced by the full version. If you come across a copy, look at the timings before buying! The shortened version remains on the video release. The 1995 Columbia/Legacy US and Canadian releases plus a VideoArts Japan release are still in International Compilations: Various Artist Albums 1995. Ronald Born has a UK two cassette copy, EDF MC 327, that contains the full 11:17 version of Desolation Row, so is again listed in International Compilations: Various Artist Albums 1995.
Thanks to Olav Langum and Peter Oudejans for information and scans.
Various Artists - "Doin' Dylan" - 2CD compilation, Columbia 480647 2 (Australia), 1995 (two variants):
Columbia 480647 2 (Australia) - front (my copy, both variants) |
This compilation was unique to Australia, and has not been released anywhere
else. After a period of being out of print, it was re-released on 30 Sep 2002,
the same day that Doin' Dylan 2 was released, see below.
The front insert is a single sheet with two folds. R-0215-4 Boots Of Spanish Leather (with Nanci Griffith) - Bob plays harmonica, from her 1993 Elektra album Other Voices, Other Rooms, see 1993 |

Columbia 480647 2 (Australia) - CD2 scan by Gerd Rundel (variant 2, includes R-0215) |
Gerd Rundel's copy has the same inserts as mine, although the right edge of his rear insert is faded as shown. His discs are significantly different: both CD1s have the same design, but on my CD1 "DOIN' DYLAN" and the artwork are in red and straight, on his CD1 "DOIN' DYLAN" and the artwork are in purple and tilted to the right. Gerd's CD2 has the same design as his CD1, my CD2 is completely different. On my CD1 the logos to the left and right of the centre hole are in black, on both Gerd's CDs these logos are in white.
For the Sep 2002 sequel to this album, Doin' Dylan 2, which also contains Dylan rarities, see 2002.

Various Artists - "Forrest Gump: Music, Artists And Times" - 3CD-ROM set, GTE Entertainment/Paramount Pictures/Upstream Multimedia 2018-0995 (USA), 1995:
R-0366 Blowin' In The Wind - loop of the harmonica solo from the Freewheelin' version, at the main menu on the "Blowin' In The Wind" link
R-0221-3 Blowin' In The Wind - with Joan Baez in the Rolling Thunder Revue, Fort Collins, CO, 23 May 1976, video taken from the Hard Rain TV special (see VHS & DVD 1970s). Included here are one verse and the chorus, the full audio is on the Joan Baez Vanguard 3CD box set Rare Live & Classic, see 1993.
Joan Baez contributed to this CD-ROM, which contains an interview with her from 1995 and an excerpt of her singing Blowin' In The Wind from her From Every Stage album. As well as a biography and discography of Joan, this section also contains a biography of Bob (with some mistakes) and an album discography.
For the film soundtrack album which includes Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, the Blonde On Blonde album version and Joan Baez singing Blowin' In The Wind., see International Album Releases (Various Artists Compilations) 1994. For the 1994 film itself, see VHS and DVD: Films with Dylan Album Tracks.

Harry Belafonte - "The Best Of Harry Belafonte II" - compilation 2CD set, BMG Victor BVCP 2309 (Japan), 1995:
R-0001-16 Midnight Special
(Huddie Ledbetter "Lead Belly") - Bob plays harmonica on the
title track of Harry Belafonte's 1962 The Midnight Special album (stereo
version) For details of the original album, see 1962. |
Harry Belafonte - "2 Gether On 1: Jump Up Calypso/The Midnight Special"
- 2 on 1 CD reissue, RCA/BMG 74321 29454 2 (Germany), 1995:
This release was made in Germany for distribution throughout Europe.
The Midnight Special was eventually released on CD in the USA by
Wounded Bird Records/Sony Music in 2009, see 1962
(as it's a re-release of the original album).
|
R-0001-17 Midnight Special
(Huddie Ledbetter "Lead Belly") - Bob plays harmonica on the
title track of Harry Belafonte's 1962 album The Midnight Special (stereo version) The song title is usually given as just "Midnight Special", but here it is listed as "The Midnight Special" (the title of the album). According to Rob van Estrik these two albums were remastered, so this track was in far better quality than on earlier CD releases in Belafonte compilations. For details of the original album, see 1962. The booklet shows illustrations of a 1980s European release previously not listed, RCA Victor NL 52324. Jean-Pol Hiernaux has a copy bought in Taiwan with a BMG Taiwan sticker over the barcode on the rear insert. Because the album is inside a slipcase, the 2001 rear insert does not have a barcode. |

This 2CD set comes in a double-width

front photo is a nice shot of Bob playing his harmonica for Carolyn
at Columbia Recording Studios, New York, 29 Sep 1961. Bob plays harmonica on the same
five tracks (with one small difference, see below) as on the Columbia Legacy CD reissue of her 1962 self-titled Columbia album (see 1994). For the US, UK and Japanese releases of the original album see 1962. |

Jean-Pol Hiernaux says these tracks are remixed slightly differently from the 1994 CD.
CD1:
R-0004-6 Swing And Turn
Jubilee (traditional)
(stereo version) (track 1)
For a complete list of all the compilations on which this track has appeared, also see 1962.
R-0003-3 Come Back, Baby (traditional) (stereo version) (track 2)
R-0002-7 I'll Fly Away (Albert E. Brumley)
(stereo version) (track 3)
For a complete list of all the compilations on which this track has appeared, also see 1962.
CD2:
R-0321 Come Back, Baby (traditional)
- alternate take of R-0003 (edited
version of R-0223, 2:40) (track 22)
Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for pointing out the version of this take that
appears on the
Columbia Legacy CD reissue of her 1962 self-titled Columbia album (R-0223, see 1994)
is 2:45 and has at the end a noise like an acoustic guitar being knocked and a
male voice. The version of this alternate take that appears here for the first
time is edited at 2:40 and omits the noise and the voice.
R-0222-2 I'll Fly Away (Albert E. Brumley) - alternate take of R-0002 (track 24)
The recording session details for 29 Sep 1961 on the booklet page shown above list two extra songs - Los Bibilicos [The Biblical People] and Virgin Mary, both of which appeared on the 1962 album. Although Bob was present at the session, I do not believe he appears on these two songs. As well as the original version of Los Bibilicos, this compilation includes a remake of the originally released take of Virgin Mary on CD1 and alternate takes of both Virgin Mary and Los Bibilicos on CD2, but none of these tracks have any harmonica playing.

On www.allmusic.com the performers for this album include Bob Dylan,
although no exact contribution is specified. There are no Bob Dylan covers
on the album. More information required - it may just be a mistake. Thanks to Freddy Ordoñez Araque for pointing out this entry. |
