Thieving In The Alley: Songs Of Bob Dylan (Big Note Records, Sweden, 2012), Dylan covers album by Born 53 including their version of Tragedy Of The Trade (my copy) |
R-0248 Tragedy Of The Trade (Bob Dylan/Gerry Goffin/Barry Goldberg)
Jack from Canada is very doubtful that Dylan appears on this track! According to Goffin, Dylan wrote a few lines of the song and gave it to him (Goffin) to finish. However, he provided no music. Goffin got Barry Goldberg to write the music (the song is credited to Dylan-Goffin-Goldberg). Apparently the song was recorded with no involvement from Dylan. Dylan does appear on Time To End This Masquerade. Dylan gave Goffin a finished, previously recorded backing track (this is why he is credited as co-producer of the track), to which Goffin wrote the words. In a 1996 interview Goffin said Tragedy Of The Trade was one of two songs on the record co-written with Dylan. "Dylan is like a god in my eyes, he's such a great writer", Goffin said. "When Carole and I first went to see him at Carnegie Hall in 1961, we went home and smashed all of our demos. I said, 'We've got to grow up.'" 'So recently he called me and he said, 'I've got this great title for you: 'Tragedy Of The Trade'. I didn't get it at first. I called him back and said, 'What kind of a trade are you talking about?' He said, 'I've got to come over,' and within an hour he's at my house. 'He gives me four lines of the first verse and I pick up from that that he's talking about the world scene. Then I gave him the next verse and he sort of nodded. I thought maybe he wanted to sing the song, but he was doing different things. He didn't write any music, so I got Barry Goldberg to write the music. The other song that we wrote together, Time To End This Masquerade, he gave me the backing track and I wrote the words to it." Confirmation of this required!
R-0249 Time To End This Masquerade (Bob Dylan/Gerry Goffin)
Jack from Canada adds that the Dylan-produced backing track to Time To End This Masquerade that Dylan gave to Gerry Goffin was actually recorded at The Eurythmics Church in London, 22 Nov 1985, where it's listed by Krogsgaard, etc. as an unidentified instrumental.
Bob also contributed to It's Not The Spotlight (R-0107), the composition by Gerry Goffin and Barry Goldberg that appeared on Barry's 1974 self-titled album, see 1974.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Jack from Canada for information and scans. R-0250 Shelter From The Storm - alternate version with extra
verse , out-take from the Blood On The Tracks
sessions, 1974
This version of the song also appears on the non-USA Columbia The Best Of Bob
Dylan compilations (see

Dylan Volumes 1 & 2 (see

and Les Indispensables De Bob Dylan (see
2004). Now also released on the limited edition 6CD Deluxe Edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 - More
Blood, More Tracks,
2018,
although apparently R-0250 was mixed to make the piano accompaniment barely
audible - it is much more prominent on the 2018 released version of the same
take, so R-0250 remains a rarity.
