1993 Laserdisc and 2014 Blu-ray releases of The 30th Anniversary
Concert Celebration
This first part of the 1990s list collects non-album song performances and interviews by Bob Dylan on VHS video and DVD (and laserdisc where I have information) from 1990 to 1994. I would be grateful for any additional information on these items and other material to place here. Video material included on CD-ROMs or CD Plus discs is still in the main directory in the appropriate part. For 1990-94 films with Dylan album tracks, see VHS & DVD: Films with Dylan Album Tracks 1990s.
Films are listed by date of original appearance (in theatres or on TV), not when the VHS video or DVD came out, often some years later. This page does not include songs from regular albums that appear in films or videos without performance footage, nor do I include music videos of standard album tracks - for a full Dylan filmography, see "Expecting Rain" or "TV Talkin'"
For informed discussion of all Bob's screen appearances, see C.P. Lee's well-received book "Like A Bullet Of Light ".
Thanks to Jean-Pierre Mercier for laserdisc details and catalogue numbers and Michel Pomarede for scans. Thanks also to Larry Crum for checking these entries against his own collection, "Positively Bob Dylan" by Michael Krogsgaard, "Bob Dylan on Video" (article in "Record Collector" magazine, Sep 1992), and several other sources. All scans that aren't credited are from my own collection or www.amazon.com
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

R-0201-2 People Get Ready
(Curtis Mayfield) - new performance recorded
especially for this soundtrack at New Belmont Studios, Bloomington, IN, 20
Nov 1989
This is not the same performance as R-0136 from the Columbia USA 4 Songs From Renaldo & Clara
promo 12" single,
1978.
Like 1989's Backtrack (see VHS & DVD 1980s), Flashback stars Dennis Hopper, this time with Kiefer Sutherland (two stars who paired up again for the first TV series of 24).
The soundtrack also contains Jimi Hendrix performing All Along The Watchtower. For details of the 1990 Flashback soundtrack album, see 1990.
Thanks to Sam C. Visser, Jack from Canada and Stuart Moore for information and scans.
Various Artists - "Columbia Records Compilation Reel #54" - VHS promo release: Columbia Records Video (USA), Apr 1990:
For a Sony Music Canada promo VHS compilation with the full Most of The Time promo video (5:50), see VHS & DVD 1995-99.
For the Columbia US promo single with a different 1990 audio version of the song (R-0209), see 1990. Anders Lindh says that R-0209 uses an edited version of the same instrumental take as the longer promo video with intro and fade-out removed, but has an almost entirely different vocal take with all four verses. There was also a radio edit (3:55) of the album version on the promo CD single.
Thanks to David Plentus, André Wilbers, T. J. Jenkins, Carsten Bauman and Anders Lindh for information and scans.

John Lennon - "The John Lennon Video Collection", VHS release: Warner Home Video (catalogue number?) (USA), 1992:
US VHS release, picture from www.amazon.com |
There are three clips of Bob in the video of John Lennon's song God.
These are from a 1966 interview, on stage in 1966 from Eat The Document
(see VHS & DVD 1960s) and on stage
at the 1969 Isle Of Wight Festival. The clips are minus their original
sound. This title does not seen to have been released on DVD. For the 1988 Imagine: John Lennon - The Definitive Film Portrait video release with these clips, see VHS & DVD 1980s. Thanks to Freddy Ordoñez Araque and Jack from Canada for information about this release. |

Daniel Lanois - "Rocky World" VHS video, Warner Music Vision 7599383413 (USA), 1993/Warner Music Vision 7599383413 (UK), 1993:
US VHS release, picture from www.amazon.com |
This video was rumoured to contain otherwise unavailable Dylan
footage, but it appears that all that it actually contains is a short excerpt
from the Series of Dreams video. Harold Lepidus adds: "This video also has sessions with The Neville Brothers from their Yellow Moon LP. They did two Dylan songs on the LP, with With God On Our Side inspiring both the Lanois collaboration and Dylan including the "extra" no Dylan verse in his own live shows. I believe this also was the lead in to the Dylan clip on the video." |

R-0671 Blood In My Eyes (Lonnie Chatman) - version with extended intro (5:09) Thanks to Keith Venturoni for the information that the version in this video has an extra six or so beats more than the World Gone Wrong album version at the beginning of the song, together with Bob saying "OK". The tape itself is in a plain white tape box with a window for the white printed sticker. The same information is repeated on the tape label. Gerd Rundel has found on eBay a copy in a black tape box with a printed label with a different work order number. Ian Woodward's copy also comes in a black plastic case with a printed label and a third work order number, repeated on the cassette top label and spine. This performance is included on the bonus DVD with the Limited Edition of Modern Times, see 2006. |

Thanks to Ian Woodward for scan of the Columbia Music Video promo, made up of two VHS video cassettes. Each comes in an identical pre-printed card sleeve as shown. The sleeve is for a CMV Entertainment "pre-release screening copy", presumably used most commonly for their film releases. The cover is glossy, black in colour and also has the pre-printed words "not for sale or retail". On each, a white "CMV Columbia Music Video" sticker has been attached. There is a window in the box, so that you can read the labels on the video cassettes contained inside. The video cassettes themselves are black with just the one sticker each as shown in the scans. There is no sticker on the spine of the video cassettes. The only difference between them is the reference number on the sticker: U49166 on tape 1 and U49167 on tape 2.
Thanks to Larry Crum for reminding me there are two Dylan rarities on this video:
R-0565 My Back Pages - Bob playing guitar during the rehearsals at Madison Square Gardens, New York, on 14 Oct 1992, with most (if not all) of the musicians that played on it in the concert
R-0566 It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry - Bob playing with Eric Clapton during the soundchecks at Madison Square Gardens, New York, on 15-16 Oct 1992

Thanks to Harold Lepidus for news that Spin CDs in the UK are advertising a 2DVD release of The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration by Classic Rock Direct/Nova/Pinnacle on 7 Apr 2008. This release omits 30 mins of the 1990 VHS and laserdisc releases, which were 110 mins. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information that this release is definitely unauthorised. Reviews on www.amazon.co.uk suggest it is a poor transfer from a VHS copy and even omits all the Dylan performances! You are strongly recommended to avoid this release, especially now the 2014 official release is available.
There is also a 5DVD set from Classic Rock called The Essential Dylan that includes The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration, but I assume this is of the same quality. Thanks for Bill Hester for finding a 2009 European DVD called Tribute To Dylan from Immortal/Zoom/101 Distribution. This appears to have the complete concert but is still probably from a VHS source. Thanks to Manuel García Jara for finding what purports to be a Sony 2DVD release on eBay - Hans Seegers says this is also definitely pirated, probably from the VHS or laserdisc release.
Sergio Mariano Romay has a 2006 DVD release from "The Way Of Wizards" (WOW Entertainment). This is listed on www.discogs.com as a European release, but the writing on the front of the insert is in Japanese (the left-hand vertical text says "30 Tribute Concert").
Thanks to Hans Seegers, David Plentus, Michel Pomarede, Jean-Pierre Mercier, Wil Gielen, Stuart Moore, Éamonn Ó Catháin and Sergio Mariano Romay for information and scans.
Various Artists - "The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration (Deluxe Edition)" - 2DVD release: Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88843036809 (USA/Europe), 4 Mar 2014; Blu-ray release: Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88843034139 (USA/Europe), 4 Mar 2014:
Thanks to Freddy Ordóñez Araque, Harold Lepidus and Éamonn Ó Catháin for news that www.amazon.com are advertising an official Sony Legacy Blu-ray and DVD release of The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration to be released on 4 Mar 2014. Both the CD and DVD/Blu-ray releases will contain extra material, but sadly not his main concert performance of Song To Woody, inexplicably omitted from the 1993 releases.
Thanks to Larry Crum for information that the 2014 releases do contain new Dylan material:
The "Behind the Scenes" bonus feature has the following:
1) Near the beginning is Bob rehearsing one verse of My Back Pages that is from a different take than the one above (R-0565)
2) The excerpt of It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry at the soundcheck is longer than R-0566 (although the additional portion is just used as background for an interview).
3) The rehearsal of My Back Pages on the VHS (R-0565 again) was just a brief instrumental passage, where on the DVD there is a much longer excerpt including Bob singing his verse.
For the 2014 2CD Deluxe Edition set, see International Albums (Regular).
2CD-R set/2DVD-R promo set, Columbia/Legacy (no catalogue number) (USA), 14/22 Jan 2014:
The US promo four disc set includes 2 CD-Rs and 2 DVD-Rs, each disc housed in its own plastic wallet. CD-R1 has a front insert (blank on the reverse) and both CD-R1 and CD-R2 have rear inserts with the track listing. Both CD-Rs are dated "01/14/14" (14 Jan 2014) while the two DVD-Rs are dated "01/22/14" (22 Jan 2014). The discs and both rear inserts have code numbers which have been blacked out. This copy of the US promo set comes with a three page promo letter from LD Communications, one of the UK's leading Music and Entertainment PR Agencies based in London. Therefore it looks like this US promo release was also distributed in the UK.
Thanks to Hervé from France for the photo of a Sony Music Europe promo three disc set with two CD-Rs plus a single DVD-R of the concert. The discs and promo literature comes in clear plastic wallets.

See Derek Barker's article in "Isis" 173 for detailed information about the differences between the 2014 Blu-ray and DVD releases and the 1993 VHS and laserdisc releases. The most important difference was the location of a previously unsuspected high definition source - the original TV show was recorded and broadcast in regular definition 4:3 aspect, but the Japanese broadcaster NHK was an early adopter of HD and filmed and broadcast the show using HD cameras in 16:9 aspect. This Japanese HD source has been used for the 2014 video releases, and the show was broadcast again on Japanese TV in Mar 2014 (see below). Because different cameras were used for the 1993 releases and the 2014 releases, there are substantial differences in the video editing of the performances, that is what is actually shown on screen at any point in the concert.

Larry Crum informs me the Dylan content of this documentary directed by Jerry Aronson consists of an excerpt of the Subterranean Homesick Blues sequence from Don't Look Back (see VHS & DVD 1960s and VHS & DVD 2000s Part 1).
Dylan content:
DVD1: In the feature film - the cue card scene for Subterranean Homesick Blues from Bringing It All Back Home and Dont Look Back. In the Extras - the sequence of Bob and Allen Ginsberg at Jack Kerouac's grave in Lowell, Massachusetts from Renaldo & Clara.
DVD2: Extras II: there is a brief clip of Dylan with Ginsberg at Kerouac's grave in the "John Hammond Sr." interview segment (different from the DVD1 footage).
For details of Bob's 1978 film Renaldo & Clara, which also features Allen Ginsberg, see VHS & DVD 1970s.

This DVD is a Region 0 release playable in all
regions, and is currently available. This was a TV documentary originally broadcast on the Disney Channel in
1994. It also includes what is claimed to be "previously unreleased
footage of The Basement Tapes", but this was actually shot in
the pool room of
Sammy Davis Jr.'s former house in the Hollywood Hills during the sessions
for The Band's 1969 self-titled album, when Bob was not present. For more information, see Jan Hoiberg's Band site

R-0319-3 I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have
Met) - recorded with the Hawks at Edinburgh, Scotland, 20 May 1966, from the unreleased
documentary film Eat The Document This performance first appeared in a 1979 documentary Heroes Of Rock And Roll (see VHS & DVD 1970s), and also appears in the 1996 boxed sets The Golden Age Of Rock 'N' Roll and Dancing In The Street (for both see VHS & DVD 1990s Part 2), and the 2003 Ed Sullivan Show set "Rock 'N' Roll Forever" + Rock 'N' Roll Revolution" (see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 2). Larry Crum says two excerpts are included here, first: "the instrumental break and FIRST LINE of last verse ("I'm leavin'" through "say very much")." and later "another very brief snippet, I can make out only the words "watery and wet"." Another source says three snippets: fourth verse, “watery and wet” (13 secs), (guitar/harp solo – fifth/last verse (42 secs), end of song (3 secs). He thinks this is actually from Cardiff, Wales, 11 May 1966! |

R-0472-2 I Can't Leave Her Behind [On A Rainy Afternoon] - song
worked on by Robbie Robertson and Bob Dylan in the unreleased documentary Eat The Document,
from a Glasgow hotel room in May 1966 (38 secs)
Larry Crum says: "The fragment on Robbie Robertson - "Going Home" previously identified as
On A Rainy Afternoon is really
I Can't Leave Her Behind (this actually
contains the words "I can't leave her behind") while the song on "No Direction Home - Bob Dylan" identified as I Can't
Leave Her Behind see
VHS & DVD 2000s Part 3)
is really
On A Rainy Afternoon. They sound like two
very different songs although I understand they are different stages of
development of the same song. Somewhere along the line the titles have
been confused!"
R-0673 One Too Many Mornings
(1:27 excerpt) - recorded live with the Hawks, Belfast, Northern Ireland, 6
May 1966 (second verse)
This performance is included in full in
the Columbia/Legacy USA/Europe 36CD set
The 1966 Live Recordings, Nov
2016 (R-1712)
Finally, there is an audio-only excerpt of "(Most Likely) You Go Your Way and I'll Go Mine" identified as with the Band from 1974 - this sounds like the Before The Flood version - plus three segments of The Band playing Up on Cripple Creek from Los Angeles (1 min, 52 seconds, total time).
Thanks to Larry Crum for supplying the catalogue numbers and dates of the commercial releases. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.
