acetates, Columbia Studios (no catalogue numbers) (USA), Jul 2014:
124 West Houston Street, Greenwich Village, New York City |
Thanks to Jeff Gold of Record Mecca, Bruce Mulle and several others for news of 149 Dylan acetates from the Nashville Skyline/Self Portrait/New Morning era that were found in a New York building in West Houston Street, Greenwich Village, that was once rented by Bob as a studio. These have been named "The West Houston Street Acetates" and contain many unreleased versions of Dylan songs from the period. R-numbers will be allocated and they will be listed in full here as time permits. For full details, see here. |

Self Portrait, alternate sequence. Two discs (Sides 2 & 3 only). All tracks could be the released mixes. On Side 2 "Ball & Stripes Rag" was the recording sessions title of Little Sadie. Side 3 has Bob Johnston's handwriting on the sleeve.
Self Portrait acetate Side 2 (variant #1), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca |
Side 2: Let It Be Me; "Ball & Stripes Rag"
(Little Sadie #1); Woogie Boogie; Living
The Blues; Belle
Isle; Like A Rolling Stone (live). (Living The Blues is track 4 instead of
track 5, so Belle Isle becomes track 5) Side 3: The Mighty Quinn (live); Take Me As I Am (Or Let Me Go); Copper Kettle; Gotta Travel On; Blue Moon; The Boxer; (The Mighty Quinn and Take Me As I Am (Or Let Me Go) are tracks 1 and 2 instead of tracks 5 and 6, so the other tracks are 3-6). |

Self Portrait, alternate sequence. Four discs. All tracks could be the released mixes.
Self Portrait acetate Side 1 (variant #2), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca |
This set of four single-sided acetates contains the Self Portrait album with its final mixes, but with the tracks in a slightly different order from that released. This set is later than the two acetates above because Little Sadie now has its released name. |

There was a rumour that the remastered Self Portrait with the Deluxe Edition of The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) would be in the original sequence, this may be it.
Tracklisting:
Side 1: Alberta #1; I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know; Days Of 49; Early Morning Rain; It Hurts Me Too (released on Side 4); Little Sadie #2.
Side 2: Let It Be Me; Little Sadie #1; Living The Blues; Woogie Boogie; Belle Isle; Like A Rolling Stone (live). (Living The Blues is track 3 instead of track 5, so Woogie Boogie and Belle Isle become tracks 4 and 5)
Side 3: Take Me As I Am (Or Let Me Go); Copper Kettle; Gotta Travel On; Blue Moon; The Boxer; The Mighty Quinn (live) (Take Me As I Am (Or Let Me Go) is track 1 instead of track 6, so the other tracks are 2-6).
Side 4: Take A Message To Mary; Minstrel Boy (live); She Belongs To Me (live); Wigwam; Alberta #2;
All The Tired Horses (released on Side 1).
Self Portrait single song acetates:
Like A Rolling Stone - live, Isle of Wight Festival, 1969, scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca (R-1099) |
The 10" acetate with the live performance of Like A Rolling Stone is the version recorded at Dylan's 1969 concert at the Isle of Wight and released on Self Portrait. The label specifies this as "Cut 3" and the version here is a different mix than on the commercially released album. There are two labels on the disc, the visible one covering up another, also with handwriting visible on it--it's likely the first had a mistake on it, so a second corrected one was placed over it. |

R-1099 Like A Rolling Stone (5:20) - unedited live performance from the Isle of Wight Festival, 1969, different mix (with crowd noise at a different level) from the version on CD3 of the Deluxe Edition of The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (the performance on 1970's Self Portrait is edited, as is the version on the 2013 remastered Self Portrait, CD4 of the Deluxe Edition of The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait, also included in 2013's The Complete Album Collection, Volume One)
R-1097 Belle Isle - alternate take of
song from Self Portrait from The
Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait
with different mix and additional Dylan speech
The version of Belle Isle from Self Portrait,
here called "Bright Star Of Belle Isle", on the 45 RPM acetate shown
sounds very
close to the alternate take from the recent The
Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), having a
different mix but the same spoken intro. However, immediately after the song Dylan clearly says:
"Always wanted to have done that, it's one of my favourites... Let's just try
this one".
R-1108 Alberta #2 - album track from Self Portrait without overdubs, a shorter intro and an extra 5 secs at the end - unreleased
R-2324 Wigwam - album track from Self Portrait (identified as "Cut #3") with different mix (Bob's voice mixed much lower)
R-1114 Wigwam - album track from Self Portrait (identified as "Cut #4") with different mix
R-1116 Early Morning Rain (Gordon Lightfoot) - album track from Self Portrait without overdubs
R-1228 Woogie Boogie - basic version of album track from Self Portrait with just piano and guitar
R-1005 Ball & Stripe Rag (In Search Of Little Sadie) - alternate take of album track from Self Portrait released in 2013 on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) in a different mix
New Morning (1970):
New Morning Side 1 (variant 1), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca |
The version of New Morning
Side 1 shown has five songs: If Not For You, two mixes of Day Of The
Locusts, Time Passes Slowly, and New Morning, Winterlude is missing. The
label has Bob's handwriting choosing one mix of Day Of The Locusts and
modifying titles. Apart from the rejected mix of Day Of The
Locusts, these may be the released versions of the songs. The version of New Morning Side 2 shown has six songs: New Morning; Sign On The Window; One More Weekend; The Man In Me; Three Angels; Father Of Night. This acetate has Bob Johnston's handwriting on the label and Bob Dylan's handwriting on the sleeve. Sign on the Window has an extra 7 seconds on intro, The Man In Me has an extra 4 seconds on intro, Three Angels has an extra 2 seconds of organ at the beginning. Similar mixes to released album. |
|
R-1109 Day Of The Locusts - album track from New Morning with different mix
R-1110 Sign On The Window - album track from New Morning with extra 7 secs of intro
R-1111 The Man In Me - album
track from New Morning with extra 4 secs of intro (not the same as R-1115
below)
Thanks to André Wilbers for information that this extra intro is Bob counting
"1, 2, 3, 4...".
R-1112 Three Angels - album
track from New Morning with extra 2 secs of bass guitar at the beginning
Thanks to André Wilbers for information that the extra intro is actually a bass
guitar, not an organ as originally listed.
New Morning, alternate sequence. Two discs.
New Morning Side 1 (variant 2), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca |
Side 1 has Bob Johnston's writing on the sleeve, in black, and Bob Dylan's possible sequence changes, in blue pen. Tracklist: If Not For You; Day Of The Locusts; Time Passes Slowly; Went To See The Gypsy; Father Of Night (released on Side 2); Winterlude. Side 2 has Bob Johnston's writing on the sleeves, Naomi Saltzman's name and phone number has been written in an unknown hand at top right of the sleeve. (Naomi Saltzman was at the time the Dylan business administrator and a long-time family friend.) Tracklist: New Morning; Sign On The Window; If Dogs Run Free (released on Side 1); One More Weekend; The Man In Me; Three Angels. |
New Morning detail of Side 1 sleeve (variant 2), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca |
New Morning Side 2 (variant 2), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca |
Not all tracks are the released mixes:
New Morning has no studio talk before song, so is not R-0071.
R-1110-2 Sign On The Window - album track from New Morning with extra 7 secs of intro
R-1111 The Man In Me - album track from New Morning with extra 4 secs of intro (not the same as R-1115 below)
R-2177 Three Angels - album track from New Morning with added bass intro (this is probably the same take as R-1112 above!)
Ten song alternate sequence version of New Morning, Bob Johnston's writing on sleeves.
New Morning Side 1 (variant 3), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca |
Variant 3 of New Morning (again two discs) has
only ten tracks in a different sequence, omitting Winterlude and Three Angels, but all tracks could be the released mixes. Side 1: If Not For You; Day Of The Locusts; Time Passes Slowly; Went To See The Gypsy; Father Of Night (released on Side 2). Winterlude is missing. Side 2: New Morning; Sign On The Window; If Dogs Run Free (released on Side 1); One More Weekend; The Man In Me. Three Angels is missing. |

Also shown are acetates with The Man In Me
(R-1115), If Not For You (R-1098), Father Of Night and Time Passes Slowly
(R-1215/R-1113). The Man In Me is a different mix from the version on the
multi-track acetate above. Father Of Night is the released mix, so
no R-number is required. R-1098 If Not For You - album track from
New Morning with different mix including strings (noted on the label) |

R-1215 Time Passes Slowly (version 1) - different edit of alternate take from New Morning released on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971)
Keith Venturoni says: "This take was used on Another Self Portrait, but this edit has a slightly longer beginning, and about 15 seconds longer at the end. The released version cuts out 15 seconds before the end, and then splices the end on. Also the drums are virtually inaudible on this acetate."
R-1113 Time Passes Slowly (version 2) - unreleased alternate take of album track from New Morning (not one of the two alternate takes on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971))
R-1115 The Man In Me - album
track from New Morning with different mix (not the same as R-1111 above)
The handwriting on the sleeve says "B-1 - Bring Ron (Ron
Cornelius on guitar) up all the way. Piano up in long fade".

The "Isis" Magazine Dylan Digest reported in early 2014 that Bob had recorded a Paul McCartney song, originally thought to be For No One from the 1966 Revolver album, for an upcoming charity album, a double album to be called The Art Of McCartney. "Isis 173" (May 2014) then said the track actually released would be Things We Said Today from the 1964 soundtrack album of A Hard Day's Night! This information was confirmed by "Rolling Stone" (Sep 2014). Although the original Beatles version of Things We Said Today was on Side 2 of the 1964 Parlophone A Hard Day's Night film soundtrack album in the UK, the Side 2 tracks were all missing from the US version of the album, which had only ten tracks instead of the UK album's fourteen: the seven tracks from the UK Side 1 were spread over Sides 1 and 2 of the US album, the other three US tracks being George Martin instrumentals from the film. Things We Said Today was instead released in the USA on the later 1964 Capitol album Something New. The Arctic Poppy web-site originally said "Box set and collectors editions will be available in summer 2014, with the album scheduled for release in the autumn." The album was finally released by Arctic Poppy Music on 17 Nov 2014, with the US release on 18 Nov 2014. Thanks to John Willy Bakke for news there is a "Super Deluxe Exclusive" four disc set as well as the regular set on 2CDs or 3 vinyl LPs, although there is no more Dylan content. The US Amazon 2CD set APCDREMUS1402AMZ has two extra tracks, C Moon by Robert Smith, and Put It There by Peter, Bjorn and John. These are not on the 2CD+DVD release or the 2LP set, but will be on the four disc set.
The front artwork for each edition of the set is different. The 2CD+DVD set comes in a blue book with pockets for the three discs inside a blue card slipcase. The 2CD set comes in a black gatefold card sleeve with a separate stapled booklet.
Jack from Canada explains that there were four US versions of the 2CD set:

Record Store Day on 18 Apr 2015 in the USA and UK (also Holland) there will be
vinyl releases of
The Basement Tape signed by Garth Hudson, available in mono only. They
are not vinyl copies of this tape, but of the original 1968 Emidisc UK 14 track
test pressing LP, reportedly the source of the songs made available to UK groups
such as Manfred Mann (The Mighty Quinn), The Brian Auger Trinity/Julie Driscoll
(This Wheel's On Fire), Fairport Convention (Million Dollar Bash), etc.,
see
1968.
As none of the tracks are now rarities, these releases have been added to The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 - The Basement Tapes Complete/Raw album page.
