This is a separate multi-year list by release date of commercially-released Various Artist stereo compilation albums released between 1980 and 1986 that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only Bob Dylan performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. This page now includes promo-only Various Artist compilation albums and Radio Station Albums with Dylan tracks. The page is still incomplete - more entries required. Other International Albums and Compilations are now here:

There must be hundreds of these albums from round the world! If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

1980

For earlier and later entries in this list, see the links above.

Various Artists - "The Pitman Family of Music: Our First 20 Years: CBS Records 1960 - 1980" - promo compilation vinyl LP, CBS P 15663 (USA), 1980:

CBS P 15663 (USA) - front scan from Lars M. Banke

Because this promo album contains an exclusive edit of The Times They Are A-Changin', for full details see 1980.

Thanks to Peter Schoefboeck for information about a picture disc version sold on eBay for $1000! Hans Seegers was concerned it was a fake, but I'm assured by Scott Neumann of Recordweb Communications that both the black vinyl and picture discs were created at the Pitman plant and the copy sold came from a Pitman employee.

Ronald Born has found two copies with the same sleeve but different label designs. Variant 2 has the same text layout as Variant 1 but adds copyright details for each song. Variant 3 has a different text layout and no copyright details.

Various Artists - "Αξέχαστες Επιτυχίες 60-70 [Unforgettable Hits 60s-70s]" - compilation vinyl LP, CBS 53967 (Greece), 1980:

CBS 53967 (Greece)
- front scan by Manuel García Jara
This Greek compilation includes Lay, Lady, Lay (Side 1, track 1), the album version from Nashville Skyline. Manuel thinks that, although this is a compilation of tracks from the late 1960s and early 1970s, the "American Grafitti" style front picture would be more appropriate for a compilation of late 1950s and early 1960s hits.

The sleeve was printed in Greece. The rear sleeve has details of six CBS Greece albums including Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, the Greek release with the twelve song UK tracklist. The song titles and artists names are listed in English. The record was also made in Greece and has orange/yellow CBS labels with the song titles and artists names in English also.

Various Artists - "Where The Buffalo Roam" - film soundtrack vinyl LP, Backstreet/MCA-5126 (USA/New Zealand); Backstreet/MCA 202.450 (NL); MCA 202.450 (Brazil), 1980:
For the film release, see VHS & DVD: Films with Dylan Album Tracks 1980s.

Backstreet/MCA-5126 (USA):

Backstreet/MCA-5126 (USA) - front scan by Ronald Born (both variants)
This film starring Bill Murray was based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson. Bob's contribution to the soundtrack album is Highway 61 Revisited, incorrectly listed as just "Highway 61". The album also includes Jimi Hendrix's cover of All Along The Watchtower. According to Jack from Canada all songs but two have been removed from the film soundtrack for copyright reasons so that these songs only appear in the original 1980 VHS and Betamax versions of the film, and not in any DVD version! As far as I can ascertain, the soundtrack album is now out of print, and has never been released on CD, presumably for the same reasons.

The record of Ronald Born's copy of the US release has different labels from those of Kenneth Robson's copy. They have no songs listed above the centre hole, while Kenneth's labels have two songs listed above the centre hole. The colour difference may just be due to different scanners. These US labels are dated 1979, all the others shown are dated 1980.

UK 1969 (no Dylan) - front scan by Manuel García Jara
Manuel García Jara says: "The story of this compilation began in 1969: after the big success of The Rock Machine Turns You On, CBS published some other samplers in the UK: Fill Your Head With Rock, a double album including Leonard Cohen, Janis Joplin, Chicago, etc. but not Dylan, was released in 1969 (see scan #1; I've got a promo UK copy with a 8-page booklet advertising CBS albums including information about Nashville Skyline, although Dylan was not included. This album was also released in some European countries: the Spanish edition was the first album with the title Llena Tu Cabeza De Rock and the only double mono album ever released by Discophon. In 1970 this compilation was published in Mexico, again with the title Llena Tu Cabeza De Rock. Like the Mexican release of Dylan's Self Portrait, this double album was released as a single album (only record #1). This release was a big hit in Mexico. CBS used again this title for a series of compilations released in Mexico in the period 1982-1988. Because of the success of these Mexican albums, some of them were also released in other Latin American countries, specially the 1984 edition (with Dylan song), released in seven countries: Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Uruguay, Argentina and in Brazil with the Portuguese title Encha Sua Cabeça De Rock".

Thanks to Eduardo Gomez Kodela for initial information, and to Hans Seegers and Manuel García Jara for further information and scans.

This 1985 US 12" compilation is unusually on the CBS label and was produced to be played in record stores to promote the Columbia "Nice Price" range of reissue albums, each only $3.99. It comes in a plain black sleeve stamped "FOR PROMOTION ONLY" (not shown). Each side of this album runs for about 20 minutes with an announcer saying that we are playing a game called "Nice Price Pursuit" - he then plays tracks from "Nice Price" albums and you have to guess the artists. The labels are not printed as Sides 1 or 2, but Side 1 shown includes the upside down triangle in a black circle symbol added to US Columbia records and tapes from 1985 onwards (the first Dylan album to have this symbol on first release was Biograph). This side includes Knockin' On Heavens Door from Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid, plus two tracks from Paul McCartney and Wings, Chicago, Billy Joel, Janis Joplin, The Byrds and Willie Nelson. The other side has The Times They Are A-Changin' from the album of the same name plus James Taylor, Loggins and Messina, Earth Wind and Fire, Simon and Garfunkel and Paul McCartney and Wings among others.

"Solid Gold Scrapbook", United Stations (USA) - cue sheet scan by Hans Seegers
Bob's contribution is Mr. Tambourine Man (0:28 excerpt, partly talked over) on Side 1A (Hour 1 - broadcast 20 Dec 1986), plus Positively 4th Street on Side 1B. These LPs were in plain white sleeves. The Mr. Tambourine Man excerpt is followed by the version by The Byrds, and the Byrds' versions of All I Really Want To Do, Turn! Turn! Turn! and My Back Pages.

Because these excerpts are unique and not released on commercial/promo records, they are no longer listed with R-numbers.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.
