2016 Releases of 1966 Live Recordings
This yearly page contains all the details of "The 1966 Live Recordings", which together with the studio recordings from "The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 - Bob Dylan 1965-1966 The Cutting Edge Collector's Edition" form the equivalent of the "50th Anniversary Collection 1966". Because "The 1966 Live Recordings" is a very limited edition only those tracks which have been separately released, including those from the Free Trade Hall, Manchester, 17 May 1966 and the Royal Albert Hall, London, 26 May 1966, have been classified as rarities.
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!
Revised: 07 January, 2024.

The 1966 Live Recordings Engineers (Richard Alderson, Mike Claydon, Brian Carroll)
As regards the single release in Jun 1966 of Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues from Liverpool, the first two bars from Liverpool are missing and were spliced in from the Belfast show, but not by Richard Alderson. In a Jan 2017 email conversation between Richard and Peter Coulthard, Richard said that he handed all his 7" Nagra reels over to Howard Alk at the end of the tour (his last show was Paris, 24 May) and never saw them again. He said that Columbia "brought over" engineers to record the shows, indicating that this was an expensive business when Dylan was happy with his (Richard's) recordings. However, Roger Ford doesn't believe that Columbia brought over engineers from the USA, but that Richard is referring to the I.B.C. engineers from London. Brian Carroll of I.B.C. cut two discs (presumably both acetates), one of which had the whole electric half of the Manchester show in mono, and the other of which had just the last two tracks, mixed in stereo, the one shown on the right above. The single splice could have been done by I.B.C. engineers in London, or by Columbia engineers back in New York, although the timescale for either is unbelievably short!

R-1708 Tell Me, Momma(4:19)
I Don’t Believe You (She Acts Like Me Never Have Met) (5:21) from Belfast was partly released on the DVD No Direction Home: A Film by Martin Scorsese, Paramount Pictures, 3 Oct 2005, see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 3 (video), and released in full on Biograph (1985) and Side Tracks (2013), the 2CD set that accompanied The Complete Album Collection Vol. 1 (audio) - therefore not a rarity. Although there was previously an opinion that the Biograph track was actually is from Dublin, 5 May 1966, the Dublin track is 6:32, while the track identified as Belfast is 5:21 here and 5:19 on Biograph, which is one pointer that they are the same (another bootleg source has the Belfast track at 5:18).

Just Like Tom Thumb’s
Blues (5:56)
Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, recorded live with the Hawks at The Odeon Theatre, Liverpool,
England, 14 May 1966, was released in Jun 1966 as the B-side of US 7" single I Want You, (see 1966). Fred
Muller says the version on CD14 below is slightly clipped at the beginning.
This is confirmed by Peter Coulthard and Roger Ford, who say that the first two
bars of the performance on the 1966 mono single and subsequent releases of
R-0054 up to 2016 were spliced in (presumably by Columbia engineers, not tour
engineer Richard Alderson) from this Belfast
performance!

One Too Many Mornings
(3:35)

was
included in the Robbie Robertson documentary Going Home, Laserlight, 1994,

I Don’t Believe You (She
Acts Like We Never Have Met) (5:57),
now also released on Bob Dylan Live 1962-1966: Rare Performances From The
Copyright Collection, 2018
A contributor thinks this performance is the one included in the 1967
documentary film Eat The Document (see
VHS & DVD 1960s),
not
actually from Edinburgh, Scotland, 20 May 1966, as previously thought. Larry
Crum agrees!
R-1732 Baby Let Me Follow You Down (Rev Gary Davies, arr. Eric von Schmidt) (3:50), now also released on Bob Dylan Live 1962-1966: Rare Performances From The Copyright Collection, 2018
R-1733 Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues (7:00)

R-0719-3 Like A Rolling Stone -
live with The Hawks, Odeon Theatre, Newcastle, 21 May 1966 (9:46), previously included
in the 1967 unreleased documentary Eat The Document, see VHS & DVD 1960s),
and the DVD No
Direction Home: A Film by Martin Scorsese, Paramount Pictures, 3 Oct 2005, see
VHS & DVD 2000s Part
3.
In "Isis" 190 Derek Barker states that track 8 on CD11 is actually from
Newcastle, not Cardiff!
He says, that although the video in
No Direction Home
is inconsistent, the accompanying audio is the same as this performance. See
VHS & DVD 1960s
for analysis of the video.
Sound engineer Richard Alderson usually changed tapes before Like A Rolling
Stone to ensure he caught the full performance, so occurrences of the song
were on separate tapes on their own, which may explain why the
performances were mixed up. Thanks to Peter Coulthard and Roger Ford for
confirming R-0719 is definitely from Newcastle, not Cardiff. This means that the
tapes must have been mixed up after Eat The Document was edited, because
the attribution to Newcastle in
No
Direction Home: A Film by Martin Scorsese
is correct!

R-0650-2 Tell Me, Momma
(4:35) - recorded live with The Hawks at the Odeon
Theatre, Liverpool, 14 May 1966, released on the Capitol/EMI boxed set The Band: A Musical History (see
2005)
This version is 4:35 instead of 4:05 as on The Band: A Musical History,
and has a longer intro. Reports that this performance is incomplete with a
drop-out are incorrect to my ears.
R-1757 I Don’t Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met) (5:43)
R-1758
Baby, Let Me Follow
You Down (Rev
Gary Davies, arr. Eric von Schmidt) (3:26)
An excerpt of this performance (R-0485) was included in the unreleased film Eat The Document (see
VHS & DVD 1960s),
and also in
The Band video The Authorised Biography, released on VHS in
1995 and DVD in 2000, see
VHS & DVD 1990s Part 2.
Thanks to Larry Crum for identifying this.
R-1906 Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
(6:51) - recorded live with the Hawks at The Odeon Theatre, Liverpool,
14 May 1966, B-side (5:36) of US 7" single I Want You, (R-0054, see 1966)
This live version, never released on a regular Columbia album, is also on the Japanese promo LP Mr. D's Collection #1 (see
1974), the Japanese
promo EP Mr. D's Collection #2 (see
1976), the 1978 Australian set Masterpieces
(see 1978),
and the Japanese Mr. D's Collection #3
promo CD (see 1993).
It's also on the Japanese 2CD set Dylan Ga
Rock (see 1993
and 2010) and the Capitol/EMI boxed set The Band: A Musical History (see
2005). All versions are still in mono as originally recorded. Fred
Muller says this version (although much longer) is slightly clipped at the beginning
when compared with the versions on Masterpieces and The Band: A Musical History.
This is confirmed by Peter Coulthard and Roger Ford, who say that the first two
bars of the performance on the 1966 mono single and subsequent releases of
R-0054 up to 2016 were spliced in (but not by tour
engineer Richard Alderson, see above) from the
performance of Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues from the ABC Theatre, Belfast,
Northern Ireland, 6 May 1966! This means that track 8 on CD14 is not the same as R-0054,
and now (belatedly) has a new R-number.
R-1759 Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat (4:07)
R-0720-2 One Too Many Mornings
(3:39) - recorded live with the Hawks at The Odeon Theatre,
Liverpool, 14 May 1966 (not 1 May
1966 as listed), from the DVD No Direction Home: A Film by Martin Scorsese,
Paramount Pictures, 3 Oct 2005, see

Part of this performance is also included in the 2013 PBS documentary King Of

Rock And Roll, see
VHS & DVD 1995-99. However,
Larry Crum says that performance is made up of
two parts, neither of which are from Glasgow 19 May 1966! He says: "It
is fairly obvious they are recorded at different venues if you look at the
microphone setup. The first part (the intro and first verse) is Newcastle, 21
May 1966 and the second part (the last chorus and the end) is Edinburgh, 20 May
1966." This means that the Glasgow 1966 performance is no longer listed as
R-0668!

R-1737 Like A Rolling Stone -
live with The Hawks, Capitol Theatre,
Cardiff, 11 May
1966
(8:22)
In "Isis" 190 Derek Barker states that track 8 on CD25 is not Newcastle, but
actually from Cardiff!
It is also not the performance from
the DVD No
Direction Home: A Film by Martin Scorsese, Paramount Pictures, 3 Oct 2005
(R-0719, which has been confirmed to be from Newcastle as stated, see
VHS & DVD 2000s Part
3).
This is why
track 8 on CD25 is now R-1737, formerly allocated to track 8
on CD11, while that track is now R-0719!
Sound engineer Richard Alderson usually changed tapes before Like A Rolling
Stone to ensure he caught the full performance, so occurrences of the song
were on separate tapes on their own, which may explain why the
performances were mixed up. Thanks to Peter Coulthard and Roger Ford for
confirming R-1737 is definitely from Cardiff, not Newcastle.

Thanks to Clinton Heylin for the information in his 2016 book "Judas! From Forest Hills to the Free Trade Hall - A Historical View of the Big Boo" that a scene in "Blow-Up", the 1966 award-winning film by Michelangelo Antonioni, starring Vanessa Redgrave, David Hemmings and Sarah Miles, shows a door to a club where The Yardbirds are playing has a flyer which reads "Bob Dylan R.I.P. May 27th, 1966"!
