Almost all Dylan stereo singles and EPs from the 1960s
are Japanese!
This is the first part of a list by release date of international (now including the USA, which was once listed separately) promo and commercially-released stereo 7" and 12" singles and EPs that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know many are not included on any other Internet site. Special thanks to Hans Seegers for many of these items! Stereo promo versions of commercially released singles that were formerly listed in the Promotional Items sections of the yearly pages are now listed here. Singles released exclusively for promotional purposes are now here too. As there were comparatively few Bob Dylan stereo singles and EPs released during the 1960s (mainly in Japan), this page lists items from 1965 to 1969.
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

1965
"Bringing It All Back Home" - 7" stereo EP, Columbia 7-9128 (USA), 1965:
This jukebox-only EP, known as the "Little LP", contains a rarity, so full details
can be found in 1965. Side 1: On The Road Again; Bob Dylan's 115th Dream; Side 2: Gates Of Eden; She Belongs To Me. As far as I know this is the only US Dylan stereo EP of any kind - none were ever released commercially. Manuel García Jara says that although this release was intended only for jukeboxes it was also sold commercially, as he has several copies with record store stickers. It also has "Available at your record shops" on the inner sleeve. The copy on the right has a United States Air Force stamp from Morón, Spain, a USAF base near Seville. Thanks to Hans Seegers, Lars M. Banke and Manuel García Jara for information and scans. |

1966
"Bob Dylan" - 7" stereo EP, CBS LSS-380-C (Japan), Jan 1966:
This 33⅓ RPM EP was released by CBS/Nippon
Columbia in Japan before CBS was taken over by Sony.
CBS LSS-380-C (Japan) - front of sleeve (my copy) |
This stereo EP in the "STEREO SEVEN 33 RPM" series contains the regular album versions of Like A Rolling Stone,
From A Buick 6 and Highway 61 Revisited from Highway 61 Revisited,
plus Mr. Tambourine Man from Bringing It All Back Home. The record
and sleeve are in a plastic wallet and there is an 8 page folded insert in
English and Japanese. Wil Gielen has also found a white label promo
with Japanese characters indicating a sample at the top. The rarity from the Japanese point of view is that the version of From A Buick 6 is not the alternate take with harmonica intro from the first US and Japanese pressings (R-0046, see 1965), but the "regular" version, unavailable on a Japanese album at that time. This version was later released in Japan in 1974 on the limited edition compilation LP Mr. D's Collection #1, see 1974. |

"Blowin' In The Wind/A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" - 7" stereo
single, CBS 45S-211-C (Japan), Apr 1966:
This rare single, part of the "MASCOT 7" series, was
the last Dylan single released by CBS/Nippon Columbia in Japan before CBS was taken
over by Sony. Only Japan issued
commercial stereo singles in the 1960s!
"Modern Folk Hits" - 7" stereo EP, CBS LSS-434-C (Japan), 1966:
This 33⅓ RPM EP was again
made by Nippon Columbia Japan and released before CBS was
taken over by Sony. The front photo is a crop of the previous picture.
This stereo EP in the "STEREO SEVEN 33 RPM" series contains the regular album versions of Blowin' In The Wind and A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan on the A-side, together with Masters Of War from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan and The Times They Are A-Changin' from the album of the same name on the B-side. From the catalogue number it dates from about Jun-Jul 1966. The record was in a plastic inner sleeve and there was a six page insert in English and Japanese. It’s effectively an unstapled booklet - pages 1/6 and 2/5 are on an outside folded sheet, and pages 3/4 are on a separate inside sheet.
Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for information and to Hans Seegers and Wil Gielen for further information and scans.
"Ballad Of A Thin Man"/"Like A Rolling Stone" - 12" stereo acetate, I.B.C. Sound Recording Studios (no catalogue number) (UK), May 1966:
I originally assumed that this acetate was in mono, but Roger Ford thinks it is stereo, which means the tracks are not rarities. Roger says: "Brian Carroll’s letter only indicates that the other disc that he cut, a 12” one, was mono. I remember reading a long time ago that I.B.C. cut two discs (presumably both acetates), one of which had the whole electric half in mono, and the other which had just the last two tracks, mixed in stereo as a try-out. I’d guess that’s what this disc is. The 8-track mono mix was the one originally bootlegged as In 1966 There Was..., but then some slightly later vinyl boots had the last two tracks in stereo, those presumably being lifted from this stereo acetate. From the letter, it seems that Carroll made a mix from the 3-track master (presumably 15ips) onto a 7 1/2” tape reel which he then kept. Maybe this tape had the 8 songs in mono and the two experimental stereo tracks. Columbia presumably just got the original 3-track."
Thanks to Alex Greenway and Roger Ford for information and photos.
"Bob Dylan!! Vol. 2" - 7" stereo EP, CBS LSS-485-C
(Japan), Aug 1966:
This 33⅓ RPM EP
was again released
by CBS/Nippon Columbia in Japan
before CBS was taken over by Sony.
The record was in a plastic inner sleeve and there was a four page folded insert in English and Japanese.
I have now been advised that the version of Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? is still in mono, and not the stereo version R-0513. The only occurrence of the stereo version R-0513 until 2015 was on a CBS stereo acetate, see 1965. (The CBS Spanish 7" EP and singles released in 1972 are now proved to have the track in mispressed mono, not stereo.) The single version released in Nov 2015 on the 18CD Collector's Edition of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (CD10, track 12) is in stereo and has been remixed from the original tapes. R-0513 will still remain a rarity, because of the limited availability of this massive set.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Wil Gielen and Sergio Mariano Romay for information and scans.

"Blowin' In the Wind" - 7"stereo EP, CBS/Sony SONE 70025 (Japan), 1968, reissued 1969:
This EP was released after CBS was
taken over by Sony. All tracks are the regular stereo album versions.
This EP was released in a promo version with yellow labels, two versions in 1968 with orange labels, and a 1969 version with later design orange/cream labels. The second version with orange labels released in 1968 has different text round the label rim -the first has just "MADE IN JAPAN", while the second has "CBS/SONY RECORDS INC. TOKYO JAPAN", see the detailed scans.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Stefan Haras for information and scans.
"Blowin' In the Wind"/"Like A Rolling Stone" - 7" promo and commercial stereo singles, CBS/Sony SONG 80132 (Japan), 1968:
"The Times They Are A-Changin'"/"A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" - 7" stereo single, CBS/Sony SONG 80156 (Japan), 1969:

The B-side title is misprinted as "Hard Rain's
A-Gonna Fall" on the label. For a 1966 Japanese single and EP containing
this track, see above. For a 1972 Australian stereo EP also containing this
track, see 7"

"Nashville Skyline" - 7"stereo promo and
commercial EPs, CBS/Sony SONE 70076 (Japan), 1969:
All tracks are the regular stereo versions from Nashville Skyline,
specifically the album CBS/Sony SONP 50095 (see
International Album Releases).
Wil Gielen thinks this EP was not actually released until 1970, but it can be no
later than early 1970 because the promo release record has yellow labels, which
were replaced in early 1970 by promo black/white labels with the same design as
the commercial orange/cream labels. Precise release date required!
For a 1974 CBS/Sony Japan Nashville Skyline EP with a different tracklist, see International 7" Singles & EPs 1974.

"Lay, Lady, Lay" - 7" promo mono/stereo single, Columbia 4-44926 (USA), 1 Jul 1969:
This single is also listed in Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1969. The single came in a buff sleeve with text round the cut-out centre, the first time this design of sleeve was used by Columbia US.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
"Lay, Lady, Lay"/"Peggy Day" - 7" promo stereo singles, Columbia 4-44926 (USA), 1 Jul 1969:
These stereo singles were made for promo use only, there was no stereo commercial single in the USA. They have blue labels with black and yellow text. The differences are to the right of the centre hole. The first variant has "Suggested Side" on the A-side. The first variant also has matrix numbers "JZSS 151000" and "JZSS 150999" on the A- and B-sides (this would imply that Peggy Day was the intended A-side, but there is no evidence that it was marketed this way). On the second variant the matrix numbers are just "ZSS 151000" and "ZSS 150999" on the A- and B-sides. For mono promo and commercial versions of Columbia 4-44926, see Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1969.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
"Lay, Lady, Lay"/"Peggy Day" - promo and commercial stereo 7" singles, CBS/Sony CBSA 82001 (Japan), 1969:
This single is in the "Air Play Series". The promo release has yellow CBS/Sony labels, the commercial release has orange labels.
For mono promo and commercial singles with these two tracks, see Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1969.
Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.
"Nashville Skyline" - 7" stereo EP, CBS CES 4097
(Singapore), 1969:
All tracks are the regular stereo versions from Nashville Skyline. This is one of only three EPs released in Singapore - the other stereo
EP is Self Portrait (see
International Stereo 7"
Singles & EPs 1970) and there is a mono Greatest Hits
EP from 1967 (see
Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1966-68).
"Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You" - 7" mono/stereo promo single, Columbia 4-45004 (USA), 19 Nov 1969:
Columbia 4-45004 (USA) - promo single, stereo side, scan by Hans Seegers |
This promo single had the mono version on one side and the stereo
version on the other. The mono side has a white label with red text, the stereo side has a blue label with black and yellow text. This single is also listed in Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1969. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. |
