Audio: US & International 7" Stereo Singles & EPs 1971

This is part of a list by release date of international (now including the USA, which was once listed separately) promo and commercially-released stereo 7" and 12" singles and EPs for 1971 that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know many are not included on any other Internet site. Special thanks to Hans Seegers for many of these items! Stereo promo versions of commercially released singles that were formerly listed in the Promotional Items sections of the yearly pages are now listed here. Singles from this period released exclusively for promotional purposes are now here also.

This very rare stereo Bolivian EP, bizarrely titled Éxitos Juveniles [Teen Hits], was made by Industrias Fonoeléctricas Lyra for CBS Records as was usual in Bolivia at this time (from the mid 1970s CBS records from Bolivia were made by another company, Heriba). It includes the following tracks:

Malas costumbres [Evil Ways] - Santana (edited version)
Lay, Lady, Lay - Bob Dylan (full album version)
La vida continúa [Life Goes On] - Sandro (the Argentinean artist who covered Blowin' In The Wind)
Cecilia - Simon & Garfunkel (edited version)

This EP was made to promote the EPs where these four tracks were included, and has the promo text "Disco promocional - Prohibida su venta [Promotional record - Not For Sale]" printed on the front sleeve and the record labels. There is no catalogue number. The rear sleeve shows the fronts of two of these four EPs (the Dylan EP below and Santana). There is also a handwritten date "1969?". This date is not correct - both tracks on the A-side and track 1 on the B-side were originally released in 1969 in their respective countries (USA and Argentina) but Cecilia (from the album Bridge Over Troubled Water) was not released until 1970, and because records in Bolivia were always released with so much delay, this EP could not have been released until 1971 (as was the Dylan EP). The record has orange CBS labels.

"Lay, Lady, Lay" - 7" stereo EP, CBS 20287 (Bolivia), 1971:

This EP, pictured on the rear sleeve of the promo EP above, is one of the few Dylan items ever released in Bolivia and is very rare. The blue writing on the front of the other copy is from a Bolivian radio station.

The record was manufactured and distributed in Bolivia by Industrias Fonoeléctricas Lyra of La Paz on behalf of CBS Records. It has 1960s-style plain orange labels with a unique CBS/Columbia logo. All tracks are the regular stereo versions from Nashville Skyline.

Both tracks are from New Morning, regular stereo album versions. Again, this was the first stereo 7" Dylan single for many countries. For a 1972 US Columbia promo 7" single of If Not For You paired with Tomorrow Is A Long Time, see the 1972 page of this listing.

The UK single comes as both a white label promo with release date "5th March, 1971" and the regular release with orange labels in two styles. Gerd Germano's copy with a solid centre has stamped matrix numbers: A-side - S-7092-A1, B-side - S-7092-B1. They did not have picture sleeves.

These three releases all had different picture sleeves.

Stefan Haras has a West German copy in a promo "CBS-Blitzinformation" sleeve. The record is the commercial release. Hans Seegers has a West German demonstration copy with a stamp on the front in German "Unverkäufliches Muster [Sample Not for Sale]" (across Bob's cheek like a scar!). Again the record is the commercial release.

Hans Seegers has a copy of the Dutch single, the first stereo Dylan single in Holland, with a misprinted A-side label showing the track as Sing, Baby, Sing by Titanic! It plays correctly.

The French single sleeve has a "languette" - for more information about the unique French index tabs or "languettes" (few of which have survived), see 1965. Augie Krater says this single is actually in mono - not a proper mono mix, but a fold down from stereo.

CBS 7092 (Italy) - front scan by Hans Seegers	This "stereo/mono" single has orange CBS labels with an "SAIE" stamp from the Italian copyright organisation on the A-side. Stefan Haras' copy has a demo stamp on the B-side with text "DISCO CAMPIONE NON VENDIBILE [SAMPLE RECORD NOT FOR SALE]". The A-side of Stefan's copy is the same as Hans', with the "SAIE" stamp in the same position. "Otra Mañana [New Morning]"/"Si No Fuera Por Ti [If Not For You]" - 7" stereo single, CBS 7092 (Spain), 26 Mar 1971:

On the Spanish single New Morning is the A-side. The titles are translated as "Otra Mañana [Another Morning]" and "Si No Fuera Por Ti". On the Venezuelan single below New Morning is translated as the more expected "Nueva Mañana". There are two record label variants on the B-side - the more rare first variant gives the English song title incorrectly as "It not for you", the more common second variant has it correctly as "If not for you".

There is no date of release on the record labels (as variant 3) but all the text is printed in a higher position (e.g. the matrix number "N-00-470-A" is level with the space between "DO" and "PRODUTOR" in the circumference text; on the variant 3 labels the matrix number is level with the space between "DIREITOS" and "DO" in the circumference text.

The promo rear sleeve is the same as the front but without the CBS logo and catalogue number at top right and Spanish song titles below "BOB DYLAN" on the bottom. This promo sleeve was included only as part of the Janis Joplin/Bob Dylan 2 x 7" singles set, not with the Bob Dylan single on its own.

The outside of the gatefold sleeve is the fronts of both singles. The inside of the gatefold sleeve is the same as the outside but without the CBS logos and catalogue numbers at top left/top right and Spanish song titles below the artists' names.

"Watching The River Flow" - 7" mono/stereo promo singles, Columbia 4-45409 (USA), 3 Jun 1971:
For more Watching The River Flow international mono and stereo 7" singles, see 1971, Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1970-76 and here. Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for information from the Steve Hoffman Forum that the mono mix is different from the stereo mix, and not a reduction. Steve Hoffman says: "The mono mix, as issued on the original Columbia 45 4-45409 (matrix number JZSP 155106) is tight, punchy with the drums pushed up a few db in the mix. Exciting, until you compare it to the stereo mix and remember that, after all, it's a Dylan song, not Leon Russell. The mono mix obscures Dylan's voice, lowering it in the mix and rendering it murky and slightly distorted. The stereo mix (J76412/BC546045) is more dynamic, actually has better & more delineated bass and even though the drums are a bit back in the mix, Dylan's voice is lifelike, with an unmistakable "breath of human" sound."

This promo single has the title track in mono on one side with a white label and stereo on the other with a blue/yellow label. For the mono side and commercial singles with Spanish Is The Loving Tongue on the B-side, see 1971.

There are three stereo label variants:

Stereo side has "RESERVICE" on the right and title on one line.
Stereo side has no "RESERVICE" and title on two lines. This copy shown has "AUG 1971" rubber stamped.
Stereo side has "SPECIAL RUSH RESERVICE" on the right and title on one line.

"Watching The River Flow"/"Spanish Is The Loving Tongue" - 7" stereo singles, CBS 7329 (NL/Spain); CBS SSC.1136 (South Africa), CBS BA-221831 (Australia); CBS BA 461349 (New Zealand), Jun 1971:
Although this single was released in mono in most countries worldwide, five countries including Holland and Spain had a stereo release.

"Wallflower" - 7" double-sided 10" acetate, Columbia CO 111696 (USA), Nov 1971:

This promo acetate has the same track on both sides - the song was recorded at the Blue Rock Recording Studio in New York in Nov 1971 at the same time as the tracks for Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II but never released at the time. It eventually appeared on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 in 1991.

Both tracks are from Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II (CBS/Sony SONP 50450-51). This single has a gatefold picture insert with lyrics (in both the promo and commercial versions) with price ¥400. I had the A-side previously listed as a rarity, but Larry Crum points out that the version on Greatest Hits Vol. II does not fade in after the applause for Tomorrow Is A Long Time, but just starts with no pause - there is actually no overlap. This A-side is therefore identical to the album version.
