This is part of a separate multi-year list by release date of international (now including the USA, which was once listed separately) promo and commercially-released stereo 7" and CD singles and EPs that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know many are not included on any other Internet site. Special thanks to Hans Seegers for many of these items! This page is incomplete - more entries required. All promo-only singles and promo versions of commercially released singles that were formerly listed in the Promotional Items sections of the yearly pages are now listed here.
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Music From The Motion Picture "Wonder
Boys" - promo CD singles, Columbia/Sony Music Soundtrax CSK 46489 (USA), Jan
2000; Columbia PRCD 98028 (Mexico), 2000:
For the DVD release of Wonder Boys, see
VHS & DVD 2000s Part
1. The film contains
both the full version of the song
played over the closing credits, and a shorter version played over the opening
credits.
|
This promo one-track CD single comes in a regular jewel case with front and rear inserts.
R-0299 Things Have
Changed - a song written and recorded specially for this film in
1999, lyrics on bobdylan.com
here The insert notes say this is Bob's first song written and performed especially for a movie since Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid in 1973. The writer has obviously not referred to these pages, where he or she would have found Band Of The Hand from the film of the same name in 1986, and Night After Night plus Had A Dream About You, Baby from Hearts Of Fire in 1987! |

There is also a Mexican version of this promo CD single, Columbia PRCD 98028. This is the only Mexican Dylan promo CD single so far. When the film was released in Mexico it was retitled Loco Fin De Semana [Crazy Weekend] but here it is still Wonder Boys.
The CD-R test pressings shown here are of the full song. The first comes in a black cut-out card sleeve and is undated - this disc also turned up in Australia. The second test pressing is dated "1/11/00" (11 Jan 2000) and is in a standard CD jewel case with a rear insert only, and the third is dated 5 Feb 2001 and comes in a slimline CD single jewel case with an insert.
Jim Siddy has a promo copy with a special "For Your Consideration" rear insert. This was sent to Academy Award voters to support the song's nomination for an Oscar for Best Original Song, which it subsequently won. There are over 7,000 Academy award voters, but as they belong to different motion picture disciplines and do not all vote in every category, I do not know exactly how many of these CD singles were sent out.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Gerd Rundel, Pachi Becerril,
Sam Plessers, John Gaylor and Jim Siddy for information and
scans.

R-0320-2 Shooting Star Oh Mercy version remastered
The other three tracks on this sampler CD, which comes in a card sleeve, are from John Lennon, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen. The only difference in this sleeve from the regular album sleeve are the words "5 Track Sampler". The CD was made in Austria for Europe-wide distribution.
Now Oh Mercy has been released in a remastered hybrid SA-CD version, R-0320 has become redundant. The remastered track was in significantly better quality than on the regular Columbia CD at the time, but has now been superseded.
Thanks to Alan Hoaksey for information on this item. Thanks to Hans Seegers for scans of his Austrian copy with an exclusive UK radio promotions sticker (the telephone number shows the then London area code).

The Finnish CD has the Dress Mann logo on the rear sleeve and CD. Thanks to Rob Cole for news that another version of this CD is being given away elsewhere in Europe by the clothing firm Regatta with the Regatta logo on the rear sleeve and CD. This version has the catalogue number 886971 38862 (I now have a copy). Gerd Rundel has also provided scans of the Regatta version with the same colouring as his Dress Mann copy. The brighter colour on my scans is probably a scanner variation. Thanks also to Éamonn Ó Catháin for news that this EP was being offered as an Internet download by www.amazon.co.uk in Mar 2009. Jack from Canada has a copy of the Regatta CD with a promo sticker on the rear of the card sleeve (also with the slightly darker colouring).

Various Artists - "Fiorino Generation" - promo 12" stereo EP, FIAT Professional/Sony BMG IMH 1000 (Italy), Jan 2008:
FIAT Professional/Sony BMG IMH 1000 (Italy) - detail of
rear of gatefold sleeve, scan by Manuel García Jara
The other artists on this 7-track stereo EP are Earth, Wind & Fire, Boston, Kansas, Toto, Blood, Sweat & Tears and the Italian artist Rino Gaetano. This is possibly the only time that You Angel You has appeared on any Various Artists compilation. It is a strange selection, even more so when the tracks of other artists were the most successful songs in their respective careers.
The cover is a three panel gatefold sleeve, fully laminated outside and inside and made of excellent cardboard. This must be the reason why FIAT chose a vinyl album (unusual in 2008) instead of a CD: the size of the EP packaging is more appropriate to display advertising. Each one of the six panels, with a cut-out top, is a rectangle not a square with an unusual size (34 x 31 cm - 13.38" x 12"). The right panel (front) has just the title (Fiorino Generation) and the left panel has a photo of the car, while the centre panel of centre has information about the music included in this record: only the artists and the songs, copyright text in Italian and in English printed vertically, and the SIAE logo in a hologram sticker with date of release ("01/2008" - this date is also printed in the record's matrix numbers. The inside panels of the gatefold sleeve (not shown) only include more photos and information about the FIAT Fiorino car. Both 12" record labels are almost identical (only the "A"/"B" is different), again without information about the songs or artists.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

CD-R (my copy) |
This 17 min CD-R contains Bob's contribution to this 1962 radio show hosted by Izzy
Young of the Folklore Center on MacDougal Street in New York, which also
included Pete Seeger and Sis Cunningham. The CD-R is in a plain white sleeve but
has the (anachronous) photo of Bob by Jerry Schatzberg used on many editions of
"Tarantula". because all three tracks are rarities, full details are

Bob Dylan - "Like A Rolling Stone"/Tony Bennett - "Smile" - "In Session At The Columbia Records 30th Street Studio" - promo 7" single, Columbia 4-43348 (A-side), later corrected to Columbia 4-3346/Columbia 4-41434 (B-side) (USA), 17 Jul 2008:
Columbia 4-43348(6)/4-41434 (USA) - front scan by Dag Braathen |
This promo single (which may be in mono) from Icon Collectibles features Like A Rolling Stone
on the A-side and Smile by Tony Bennett on the B-side. It is actually
an invitation to a photography exhibition at the Morrison Hotel, New York, on
17 Jul 2008, of pictures taken at the Columbia Recording Studios of Bob, Tony
Bennett, Johnny Cash, Billy Holliday, etc. The catalogue number of the A-side is given as Columbia 4-43348 whereas the actual catalogue number of the original 7" mono single was Columbia 4-43346 (see Mono Singles 1965). This was a misprint as the pressing number is given as ZSP 110938, which is correct. Thanks to Manuel García Jara for scans of a corrected single with the same sleeve and B-side, but with the right catalogue number to the left of the centre hole on the A-side. |
