This is the fifth part of a separate multi-year list by release date of commercially-released stereo Bob Dylan-only compilation albums (including Greatest Hits albums with non-standard tracklists) that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only performances which are all available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Thanks to Hans Seegers for all the exclusive CBS Japanese releases, etc.!

Promo-only Dylan compilation albums are now listed on this page. Other International Albums and Compilations are now here:

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Bob Dylan Compilations

For the earlier parts of this list, see the links above. This list now includes albums with the title Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits (various Volumes) with non-standard tracklists. For Greatest Hits albums with the standard US tracklists and the 30-track The Essential Bob Dylan (2000) see International Albums (Regular). There are also several international Bob Dylan compilation albums such as The Essential Bob Dylan which contain rarities in the main Searching For A Gem list. The worldwide expanded editions of that album with six extra tracks are listed below.

2000

"The Best Of Bob Dylan Volume 2" - compilation CD, Columbia 498361-2, (Europe/Australia), May 2000:
Limited Edition (Columbia 498361-9) copies were accompanied by a bonus CD single with two live performances which remain rarities, for those full details are in 2000.

Columbia 498361 2 (UK) - front with sticker, photocopy by Paul Shenton (Standard Edition)

All older tracks on this album have been digitally remastered using SBM - the version of Changing Of The Guards included is the extended version from the 1999 remastered Street-Legal.

Columbia 498361 2 (UK) - front sticker with "SUBTERANNEAN" spelling mistake, photocopy by Paul Shenton (Standard Edition)

Columbia 498361 2 (UK) - promo poster with "SUBTERANNEAN" spelling mistake (my photo)

Columbia 498361 9 (UK) - rear insert with "SUBTERANNEAN" spelling mistake, (2CD Limited Edition - reverse is plain brown)

Columbia 498361 2 (UK) - CD1 with R-0299 and R-0273 (both editions)

Columbia 498361 9 (UK) - CD2 (Limited Edition Bonus Disc) with R-0435 and R-0436

Columbia 498361 2 (UK) - rear insert with spelling mistake corrected, photocopy by Paul Shenton (Standard Edition - reverse is again plain brown)

Columbia 498361 9 (UK) - inside of three-fold front insert (2CD Limited Edition - "SUBTERANNEAN" spelling mistake)

Columbia 498361 9 (UK) - outside of three-fold front insert (2CD Limited Edition)

Columbia 498361 9 (Australia) - left of three-fold front insert, scan by Fred Muller

Columbia 498361 2 (UK) - outside of three-fold front insert, photocopy by Paul Shenton (Standard Edition)

Columbia 498361 9 (Australia) - CD1 scan by Jack from Canada

Columbia 498361 9 (UK) - detail of rear insert (2CD Limited Edition)

Columbia 498361 2 (UK) - detail of rear insert, photocopy by Paul Shenton (Standard Edition)

Columbia 498361 9 (UK) - detail of outside of front insert (2CD Limited Edition)

Columbia 498361 2 (UK) - detail of outside of front insert, photocopy by Paul Shenton (Standard Edition with catalogue number)

This compilation when released contained two rarities, so details were then given in 2000. Both rarities have now been released on regular Dylan compilations.

R-0299 Things Have Changed from The Wonder Boys soundtrack, lyrics on bobdylan.com here
Now no longer a rarity since it is included in The Essential Bob Dylan (2000) on the bobdylan.com albums page.

R-0273 Dignity - original Oh Mercy out-take produced by Daniel Lanois from Touched By An Angel: The Album - see 1998, not the 1994 Brendan O'Brien remixed version for Greatest Hits Vol. 3, which retained only Bob's vocal and piano and added new backing
Now no longer a rarity since it is included in the 3CD set Dylan (2007) on the bobdylan.com albums page.

Columbia 498361 9 (UK) - front with sticker (2CD Limited Edition, my copy)

The single CD Standard Edition has a different front sticker from the Limited Edition, while both the front and rear inserts are slightly different. A spelling mistake ("SUBTERANNEAN") on the rear insert and the inside of the front insert of the Limited Edition was corrected in the Standard Edition, where the insert has much bolder song titles. However, the Standard Edition front sticker still has the mistake! Thanks to Paul Shenton for the copy of the huge promo poster which also has the spelling mistake and a second poster which doesn't! However, the second poster refers to 1997's The Best Of Bob Dylan as The Best Of Bob Dylan Volume One, a title it never had.

Both the 2CD Canadian Limited Edition (not shown) and the single CD Standard Edition have the same catalogue number - Sony TVK-24076. This compilation was not released in the USA. The Limited Edition with the bonus disc wasn't released in Japan because the CD single SME Records SRCS 2306, Things Have Changed/Dylan Alive Vol. 3, which contains the live versions of Highlands and Blowin' In The Wind, was released in Japan on the same day (see 2000).

This Standard Edition release contains a bonus 18th track, Forever Young. The Biograph demo of Forever Young was used in 2000 in Japan in an Apple Computer iMac advert called "Video by Dad", this is why it was added to the Japanese release as the 18th track. The jewel case had a silver front sticker with Japanese text:

"First release only
Includes sticker sheet
CD label printed in four colour process
Win tour merchandise."

The CD has a multi-coloured obi with price ¥2,520 (¥2,400 before tax) and release date "00-6-21" (21 Jun 2000). The withdrawal date is "00-12-20" (20 Dec 2000). As well as the three-fold insert in English there is a booklet in English and Japanese and a sticker sheet with pictures of all Bob's albums. These releases do not have the "SUBTERANNEAN" spelling mistake.

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux, Gerd Rundel and Sonny Boy McFitzson for information and scans. Thanks to Wil Gielen for scans of a promo cassette release with yellow labels and a yellow card insert, unusual for the 2000s.

Hans Seegers' copy shown was bought in Italy, and has an Italian SIAE sticker on the rear sleeve. Manuel García Jara has a copy with a white sticker on the rear sleeve with "Made In: (printed) GERMANY (rubber stamped)". This is incorrect, the album was only made in Holland. The records were housed in a wide single sleeve, not a gatefold, and had picture inner sleeves.

Thanks to Hans Seegers, Patrick Helfrich and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

"The Very Best Of Bob Dylan" - 2CD set, Columbia COL 498540 2 (Sweden), May 2000:

Columbia COL 498540 2 (Sweden) - front with sticker (my copy)

This 2CD compilation originally contained two rarities - Things Have Changed and what was thought to be a unique remix of Changin' Of The Guards, so full details are in 2000. However, Things Have Changed has now been released on The Essential Bob Dylan, and the version of Changin' Of The Guards appears to be the original version from Street-Legal after all!

Thanks to Les Kokay and Larry Crum for information.

The original list of the six extra tracks posted by Amazon Germany was incorrect and must have been provisional - the six extra tracks were reported to have been:

Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?; I Want You; Highway 61 Revisited; I Threw It All Away; On A Night Like This and Baby Stop Crying

instead of:

Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?; I Want You; Changing Of The Guards (1978 version, now found on CD only on Greatest Hits Vol. 3); Blind Willie McTell; Tight Connection To My Heart and Dignity (Alternate Version).

Note that Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? is still in mono, as on Masterpieces (1978) and Biograph (1985). Track listing:

Disc 1: Blowin' In The Wind; Don't Think Twice, It's All Right; The Times They Are A-Changin'; It Ain't Me, Babe; Maggie's Farm; It's All Over Now, Baby Blue; Mr. Tambourine Man; Subterranean Homesick Blues; Like A Rolling Stone; Positively 4th Street (3:54 stereo version from Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits and Biograph); Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? Disc 2: Forever Young (slow version from Planet Waves), Tangled Up In Blue; Shelter From The Storm; Hurricane; Changing Of The Guards (1978 version, as above); Gotta Serve Somebody; Blind Willie McTell (from The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3); Jokerman; Tight Connection To My Heart; Silvio; Everything Is Broken; Dignity (Alternate Version) (R-0273 as above); Not Dark Yet; Things Have Changed (R-0299 as above).

Thanks to David Plentus for spotting the reported differences, and to Anthony Perry and David Goldsmith for correcting the errors. Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin, Gerd Rundel and Ian Woodward for information and scans.

Thanks to Bill Hester and Darren Tucker for the information that the Australian edition of this set (Columbia 5031332000, made in Australia) was released in New Zealand in Mar 2002, but not announced in Australia until Aug 2002 - this looks identical to the French release, with a similar catalogue number. Bill also informs me that the Australian "Limited Edition" Best Of Bob Dylan Vols. 1 & 2 (see above) is still on sale in New Zealand (as are the separate albums), which must make it extremely confusing for prospective purchasers new to Dylan! Thanks to Stuart Moore for scans of the Australian release, which has a unique white front sticker with blue text.

"Bob Dylan SA-CD Sampler" - promo 6-track Multichannel SA-CD, Columbia CSH 55838 (USA), 6 Jun 2003:
Because this CD contains rarities, full details are in 2003.See below for a seven-track sampler from Oct 2003 with the same catalogue number.

Sony SA-CD May catalogue announcing the fifteen Dylan SA-CD releases

At the Home Entertainment Show in San Francisco, CA, to provide members of the media with a flavour of the Columbia/Legacy Dylan Remastered material, Columbia handed out a six track hybrid SA-CD for reporters who were at the event. Each of the six tracks is available on the disc in three formats: CD Stereo, SA-CD Stereo and SA-CD Surround Sound. The CD is in a clear plastic wallet without artwork. This sampler was exclusive to the Home Entertainment Show, although a new version with an extra track was also released with the limited edition of the Masked And Anonymous soundtrack.

The tracks on the sampler are:
1. All I Really Want To Do - from Bob Dylan Live 1964, Concert At Philharmonic Hall, The Bootleg Series, Volume 6 (this is now a rarity as the album released in Mar 2004 was in stereo only)
2. Love Minus Zero/No Limit - from Bringing It All Back Home
3. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again - from Blonde on Blonde
4. Tangled Up In Blue - from Blood On The Tracks
5. Gotta Serve Somebody - from Slow Train Coming
6. Moonlight - from "Love & Thef
t"

Columbia CSH 55838 (USA) - SA-CD (my copy)

Leading off the demonstrations, Steven Berkowitz (Senior Vice President A&R, Legacy Recordings) played track one which is from a previously unreleased Bootleg Series album recorded live in 1964. He told the group that this Dylan Remastered SA-CD would be coming out in October and would be the 16th disc in the series. The song features a 22 year old Dylan, singing with some enthusiasm and raw energy. This track is also interesting since it sounds like Dylan may have had a drink or two before the performance. (There was some talk in the listening session about Dylan being "a bit tipsy").

"Bob Dylan SA-CD Sampler" - promo 7-track Multichannel SA-CD releases, Columbia CSH 55838 (USA), Aug 2003/Columbia CSH 55838000 (Europe), Oct 2003:

This promo SA-CD sampler has the same catalogue number as the previous one, but is actually the 7-track sampler included with the Limited Edition of Masked And Anonymous (see above) in a gatefold card sleeve. Cold Irons Bound from Masked And Anonymous is the seventh track. This CD design is different from the sampler CD.

The inside of the gatefold sleeve has a pocket on the right for the CD. On the left are the pictures of the fifteen Dylan albums being released on hybrid SA-CD in Sep 2003, on the right is a plug for The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Live 1964 with a first look at the cover design. There is also a version of the US sampler with a slightly different rear design that was being given away with Sony SA-CD and DVD players at Christmas 2003. This has the same catalogue number but new text on the back: "CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE A SPECIAL PLAYER, YOU DESERVE A SPECIAL DISC". This was available both in a card sleeve and in a jewel case.

The European version of this promo sampler has the identical card sleeve but a different CD (silver instead of white). The CD is made in Austria.

Thanks to Peter Good for finding the US sampler on eBay, to Hervé from France, Pachi Becerril, Ian Woodward and Gerd Rundel for pictures.

"Bob Dylan Songs" - promo 2CD-R set, Soundtracksite (no catalogue number) (USA), 2004(?):

Front of CD 1 - picture from eBay
This promo 2CD-R set contains 30 Dylan songs from the 1960s to the 1980s. The eBay seller says "this is likely one of only a handful made to pitch use of these Dylan songs on movies, TV, commercials & video games". The CD-Rs are housed in jewel cases with front inserts. Bizarrely the web site address www.soundtracksite.com now leads to the site of Pathway Specialty Compounds, a pharmacy company based in Las Vegas, NV! Archived copies of the correct web-site are dated 2004, so I have dated this set then in the absence of further information.

"Iden & Tity" - film soundtrack album, Sony Music MHCP 166 (Japan), 2 Jun 2004:

Sony Music MHCP 166 (Japan) - front with obi (my copy)

The famous Japanese cartoonist and Dylan fan Jun Miura, who compiled the promo 2CD compilation Dylan Ga Rock (see 1993 and 2010), also compiled this album (I Threw It All Away appears twice!). The songs on this CD are used in the 2003 independent Japanese movie "Iden & Tity", directed by Tomorowo Taguchi and based on a series of comic books by Jun Miura, see Films with Dylan Album Tracks 2000-04. Jun Miura also used this artwork for the Japanese edition of The Essential Bob Dylan, see 2000. The CD front insert is a 56-page booklet entirely in Japanese which is illustrated with cartoons by Jun Miura. Jun Miura also created the artwork for the Japanese 2CD promo-only set Dylan Ga Rock mentioned above, see 1993 and 2010, with the same image of Bob in hat and shades with acoustic guitar, and again for the 2004 Japanese release of The Best Of Bob Dylan, see 1997, and the 2003 Japanese release of The Essential Bob Dylan, see International Album Releases.

Thanks to Michio Kinoshita for information about this release, also that it was rescheduled for 2 Jun 2004 from the original release date of 21 Jan 2004. It was apparently delayed because Bob did not like the artwork, but he has been talked round! Also thanks to Anders Lindh.

A second film soundtrack album has been released on the UK Project label in Japan, but contains only the film score and no Dylan music (see above). Thanks to Jack from Canada for the information that this is because the Dylan songs on the Sony soundtrack album don't actually appear in the film, just in the form of lyrics as sub-titles, although an actor appears throughout the film as "Dylan's ghost"!

"Shakespeare In The Alley: Bob Dylan Poetics" - 12 radio broadcast CDs, Public Broadcasting System (no catalogue numbers) (USA), 2007:

The shows present Bob Dylan as the contemporary American successor of Walt Whitman, Woody Guthrie and Allen Ginsberg as a democratic poet in opposition to the elite tradition represented best by the early T. S. Eliot. The writer/producer of this radio series, Dr. Bill King, has written and produced two earlier versions of this series and aired them on public radio with favourable local reception. This expanded series provides a new programming model for presenting humanities content on radio, reaching out to a wide audience including both those who already have an interest in Bob Dylan's work and those who love poetry and music but know little of this artist working in a medium not usually associated with poetry. This website www.dylanalley.org is meant to provide supplementary material to the radio series. The title of the series comes, of course, from the second verse of "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again":

Each show examines some form Dylan likes to use (the ballad, the love song), some theme (the "monster myths" such as racism or the quest for salvation), but always reinforcing the central concept of Dylan's song as a democratic poetry drawing on and reaching out to a diverse audience from various cultures.

Writer/narrator/producer: Dr. William E. (Bill) King, Professor of English, Western State College of Colorado, Gunnison CO 81231.

Detail of CD-R1, scan by Barney Hallingby

SHOW ONE -INTRODUCTION
Show one introduces three questions the series will address: What kind of poet is Dylan? How can we deepen our appreciation of his work? How does his poetry work? The short answers will be developed in later shows. It focuses primarily on one song, "To Ramona", a simple song in appearance with deep philosophical implications about what the "radical solitude" in which each of us exist.

SHOW TWO - THE THREE KINGS
This show continues the idea of "radical solitude" in "Just Like A Woman" and then tums to the question of interpretation, including a radio drama based on the liner notes to John Wesley Harding.

SHOW THREE - THE JOKER AND THE THIEF
Using songs from all five decades of Dylan's career, this show demonstrates how Dylan alternates artistic masks. He fluctuates back and forth between a Classical mode of moderation and a Romanticism ode of excess. These two modes are symbolically expressed in the joker and the thief from "All Along the Watchtower." They reveal Dylan's altemation between Dionysian rebellion and Apollonian order.

SHOW FOUR - THE BALLADS, PART I
This two part series of shows focuses on narrative songs, the form we call "ballads." The first part looks at ballads on albums in '63,'64,' 65 and '68. The theme of America emerges in three of these ballads: " Motor psycho Nightmare," "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream," and "As I Went Out One Morning," where America appears as the "fairest damsel that ever did walk in chains."

SHOW FIVE - THE BALLADS, PART II
Part two moves from analysis of short ballads on the John Wesley Harding album to a close reading of two long ballads: "The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest" and the much more powerful and mythic "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts," then closes with "A Simple Twist of Fate" which reverses the gender roles in the "Jack of Hearts."

SHOW SIX - THE LOVE SONGS, PART I
This two part series begins by demonstrating Dylan's rejection of Tin Pan Alley and of "protest" songs. This leads to a focus on his love songs. Some are really love song, some explore the artist/audience relationship, some are about spiritual love. This show closes with an analysis of "I Want You" as critique of popular love song tradition, with the Beatles portrayed in the final verse as "your dancing child with his Chinese suit."

SHOW SEVEN - THE LOVE SONGS, PART II
Part II focuses on a single song, "Visions of Johanna," one of Dylan's richest and most complex songs about human longing for the eternal. The real vs. the ideal is explored as Dylan declares", Inside the museum infinity goes up on trial." This is perhaps Dylan's finest song in the Romantic mid-sixties period, where "little boy lost" longs for the ideal.

SHOW EIGHT - MYTHS
Dylan debunks the false myths of "true love" in "Love Sick" and American righteousness in "With God on Our Side," seeking those true myths which lead to salvation and seeks to promote true myths which help us find our place in the eternal rather than the immediate.

SHOW NINE - "QUINNTESSENCE"
Following up on the myths in show eight, this show explores other songs which convey Dylan's quest for the eternal rather than the temporal. It builds not only on show eight but also show seven in about "Visions of Johanna," moving on to "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Quinn the Eskimo," "When I Paint My Masterpiece", et al.

SHOW TEN - THE JOHN WESLEY HARDING ALBUM
This show focuses entirely on one album, moving through the album analyzing each song as a step in the progression from the outlaw figure of John Wesley Harding to the totally moderate family man who says, "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight." This show builds on show three where the joker/thief dichotomy is introduced as well as the ballad show which covers several songs on the album.

SHOW ELEVEN - THE ART/ARTIST/AUDIENCE RELATIONSHIP
Following up earlier references to the theme of art's relationship to artist and audience, this show compares romantic/classical modes, folk vs. fine art, popular vs. high culture as seen in such songs as "She Belongs to Me" and "Visions of Johanna" and "When I Paint My Masterpiece."

SHOW TWELVE - DYLAN AND THE TRADITIONS
This concluding show explores Dylan's relationship to three traditions: modern poetry, popular song, traditional song. I argue that he is indebted to all three but at the same time tries to overcome the limitations which each impose on the artist. My conclusion: he takes the best, leaves the rest.

Watching The River Flow is listed as coming from the original 1971 US single, not Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 2. However, it's not the US mono single but the stereo version released elsewhere, see International 7" Singles & EPs 1971 and 1971. Thanks to Stuart Moore for listening on headphones and confirming it is the stereo version. Thanks to Andrew Wellman for information that Forever Young is not the usual slow version by Bob and The Band from Planet Waves but the fast version, the first time I've known this used in a compilation.
