This is the second part of a separate multi-year list by release date of commercially-released stereo Dylan-only compilation albums (including Greatest Hits albums with non-standard tracklists) that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only performances which are all available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Thanks to Hans Seegers for all the exclusive CBS Japanese releases, etc.! All promo-only Dylan compilation albums are now here also.

Other International Albums and Compilations are now here:

Bob Dylan Compilations

For the other parts of this list, see the links above. This list now includes albums with the title Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits (various Volumes) with non-standard tracklists. For Greatest Hits albums with the standard US tracklists see International Albums (Regular). There are also several international Bob Dylan compilation albums such as The Essential Bob Dylan which contain rarities in the main Searching For A Gem list.

"Gift Pack '70 Series: Bob Dylan"- deluxe 2LP boxed set, CBS/Sony SOPB 55117-18 (Japan), Nov 1970:

JpnCompSOPB-55117-8Front.jpg (22532 bytes)
CBS/Sony SOPB 55117-18 (Japan) - front with corner obi, scan by Hans Seegers

This is the first of a large number of exclusive compilations released by CBS/Sony in Japan, most as boxed sets, all with unique packaging and extras! There is an unusual corner obi which is glued to the inner lid of the hinged box (so it can't go missing), the rear of which is plain white.

Thanks to Shawn Chambers for information: "This is Vol. 9 in the first Gift Pack Series issued in Nov 1970 to commemorate the second anniversary of CBS/Sony in Japan. It is a numbered, limited edition, 2-record box set issued with a booklet and colour poster." The number is printed on the unique corner obi (detail shown below). The booklet has twelve pages and the large poster on thick paper is the Milton Glaser picture given away with copies of the US 1967 Greatest Hits compilation.

I am now positively informed that the version of Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? in this set is in mono, and not the stereo version unavailable on commercial CD until 2015. The version available as on Masterpieces (1978) and Biograph (1985, remastered CD release 1997) and the 2000/2001 Essential Bob Dylan/Ultimate Bob Dylan compilations is also from the original single and still in mono! The only occurrence of the stereo version is on a CBS stereo acetate, see 1965. (The CBS Spanish 7" EP and singles released in 1972 are now proved to have the track in mispressed mono, not stereo.) The single version released in Nov 2015 on the 18CD Collector's Edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 – Bob Dylan 1965-1966: The Cutting Edge (CD10, track 12) is in stereo and has been remixed from the original tapes. R-0513 will still remain a rarity, because of the limited availability of this massive set.

Side 1: Lay, Lay, Lay; John Wesley Harding; Girl From The North Country (with Johnny Cash); I Pity The Poor Immigrant; I Threw It All Away.

Side 2: Like A Rolling Stone; Mr. Tambourine Man; Subterranean Homesick Blues; Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?; Highway 61 Revisited.

Side 3: Rainy Day Women #12 & 35; I Want You; Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands (mistitled as "Lowland" on the sleeve and misspelled as "Lawland" on the record label). [This is the only place this song appears on a Dylan album other than on Blonde On Blonde and the 2015 6CD or 18CD editions of The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 – Bob Dylan 1965-1966: The Cutting Edge!]

Side 4: Blowin' In The Wind; When The Ship Comes In; My Back Pages; House Of The Risin' Sun; Don't Think Twice, It's All Right; The Times They Are A-Changin'.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. Thanks also to Ulf Gyllenspetz.

CBS/Sony SOPB 55153/54 (Japan) - box front with obi scan by Hans Seegers

This limited release, part of the "Gift Pack Series", was exclusive to Japan and contained a 1972 calendar featuring CBS/Sony artists. The records come in "Gift Pack Series" paper inner sleeves. The box has a silver obi with a photo of Bob at the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival and red, black and blue text. The rear of the obi is plain white. The box was priced at ¥3.000.

Tracklisting:

Side 1: Talkin' New York; Blowin' In The Wind; Don't Think Twice, It's All Right; Only A Pawn In Their Game; The Times They Are A-Changin'; Chimes Of Freedom
Side 2: Mr. Tambourine Man; It's All Over Now, Baby Blue; Highway 61 Revisited; Desolation Row
Side 3: Visions Of Johanna; Just Like A Woman; Rainy Day Women #12 & 35; John Wesley Harding; Lay, Lady, Lay; Nashville Skyline Rag
Side 4: Like A Rolling Stone; The Mighty Quinn (Quinn, The Eskimo); She Belongs To Me; Wigwam; If Not For You; New Morning; Watching The River Flow

All the tracks are the regular stereo album versions - thanks to Tom Ringtved for finding this album on the Internet and to Hans Seegers, Wil Gielen and Michel Pomarede for extra information and scans. There is also a 12-page booklet. Shawn Chambers adds; "This is Vol. 12 in the Gift Pack '71 Series issued Nov. 1971 to commemorate the third anniversary of CBS/Sony. It is a limited edition 2-record box set issued with a booklet and 1972 CBS/Sony artist calendar."

"More Bob Dylan Greatest Hits" - stereo vinyl 2LP sets, CBS S 67239 (UK/Ireland), Dec 1971, re-released mid-1970s, 1980s; CBS S 67239 (NL), 1971, re-released mid-1970s, 1987; CBS 67239 (Portugal), mid-1970s; CBS S 67239 (Portugal), early 1980s, re-released late 1980s; stereo cassette release, CBS 40-67239 (UK), 1970s:

GH2UKFront.JPG (24693 bytes)
CBS S 67239 (UK) - front of gatefold sleeve (my copy, 1971 release - white logo at top left)

Like the first UK Greatest Hits (see 1967), this album had a different tracklist from the US version Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II (Columbia KG 31120, 17 Nov 1971) - Positively 4th Street replaced She Belongs To Me as the first track on disc 2 (Positively 4th Street was missing from the 1967 UK Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, where She Belongs To Me replaced it.) On Side 4, It's All Over Now, Baby Blue, which had also appeared on the 1967 UK Greatest Hits album as one of the two extra tracks, was replaced as track 2 by New Morning.

Because of the number of releases in the UK and several other countries, full details of this album are now here.

The album with the UK title and tracklist was also released in Ireland, Holland, Italy, Portugal and Yugoslavia (the Greek release had the UK catalogue number but the US tracklist). Although the UK 2LP set was also released on 8-track tape cartridge and compact cassette, no CD reissues with the UK tracklist have ever been released. For CD releases of this album notified to me so far, see International Albums (Regular).

"Bob Dylan: Un Poeta Un Artista [Bob Dylan: A Poet An Artist]" - stereo 2LP set, CBS Sugar S 67239 (Italy), 1971; CBS S 67239 (Italy), late 1970s; stereo cassette release, CBS 40 S 64769 (Italy), 1972:

This Italian album is another release of the 1971 UK More Bob Dylan Greatest Hits album with the same catalogue number (see above). On the front sleeve the title "BOB DYLAN UN POETA UN ARTISTA [BOB DYLAN A POET AN ARTIST]" is in white and superimposed directly over the picture as on the UK front sleeve. Full details of this album are now here.

CBS CS-10.18 (Venezuela) - front scan by Hans Seegers (all releases)
As this compilation contains a rarity, George Jackson ("Big Band" version), full details are in 1972.

Lars M. Banke has noticed that Wigwam is misspelled “Wigwan” on both the front and rear sleeved and the Side 1 labels of all pressings. There is also a track mistake - track 5 on Side 2 El Hombre Pandereta [Mr. Tambourine Man] is actually the cover version by The Byrds!

CBS/Sony SOPI 11-13 (Japan) - front of gatefold sleeve with obi, scan by Hans Seegers
Because it contains three rarities from the Nov 1973 Dylan album, full information and pictures of this set are in 1973. Tracklisting:

Side 1: Blowin' In The Wind; Talkin' New York; Song To Woody; Don't Think Twice, It's All Right; Masters Of War; Ballad Of Hollis Brown; North Country Blues

Side 2: The Times They Are A-Changin'; The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll; I Don't Believe You; Chimes Of Freedom; It Ain't Me, Babe

JGoldDiscFront.jpg (23190 bytes)
CBS/Sony SOPN 25 (Japan) - front with obi, scan by Hans Seegers
I previously had this listed for 1972, but Hans Seegers believes it to be from 1974. Confusingly John Shaw says he purchased his copy in Japan in 1973, a date which he is sure of. Wil Gielen supports the 1973 date. As this set contains George Jackson ("Big Band" version), the full entry is in 1973.

CBS/Sony SOPN 25 (Japan) - Side 1 scan by Sergio Mariano Romay

CBS/Sony SOPN 25 (Japan) - Side 2 scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (with R-0084)

The gold foil sleeve is very hard to scan successfully. Tracklisting:

Side 1: Blowin In The Wind; The Times They Are A-Changin'; My Back Pages; Mr. Tambourine Man; Like A Rolling Stone; Rainy Day Women #12 & 35; I Want You.

Side 2: I'll Be Your Baby Tonight; Girl From The North Country (with Johnny Cash); Lay, Lady, Lay; If Not For You; Watching The River Flow; George Jackson ("Big Band" version).

For an extracted Gold Disc 7" EP with Blowin In The Wind; Like A Rolling Stone; The Times They Are A-Changin' and Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, see International 7" Stereo Singles & EPs 1974.

1974

"Mr. D's Collection # 1" - promo LP, CBS/Sony YBPC 2 (Japan), mid 1974:
This is the album that first collected Bob Dylan rarities together, and it was only been released in Japan on vinyl as a strictly limited edition. This album was released two years before the extracted EP, Mr. D's Collection #2, which definitely dates from 1976. Hans Seegers and Wil Gielen have now confirmed the above date for this. I have no information about this release having an obi. The date "1974 12 31" (31 Dec 1974) which appears on the obi and the insert is the closure date for the offer, not the release date as I originally thought.

MrD1.jpg (13099 bytes)
CBS/Sony YBPC 2 (Japan) - front scan by Lars M. Banke
Because this album is a collection of rarities, full details are found in 1974. Tracklisting:

Side 1: I'm So Restless (Roger McGuinn); I'll Fly Away (Carolyn Hester); Mixed Up Confusion (alternate take); From A Buick 6; George Jackson (Acoustic version).

Side 2: Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?; Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues (live 1966); Spanish Is The Loving Tongue (solo version); Nashville Skyline Rag (Earl Scruggs); George Jackson ("Big Band" version).

This solo take of Spanish Is The Loving Tongue is different from the take released in 2013 on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971)! All tracks are the regular album versions, although I previously misreported that Side 4 of this album had the stereo version of Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? - this is now confirmed to be the "standard" mono single version, as found on Biograph (1985, remastered CD reissue 1997) and the 2000/2001 Essential Bob Dylan/Ultimate Bob Dylan compilations. The only occurrence of the stereo version is on a CBS stereo acetate, see 1965. (The CBS Spanish 7" EP and singles released in 1972 are now proved to have the track in mispressed mono, not stereo.) The single version released in Nov 2015 on the 18CD Collector's Edition of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (CD10, track 12) may now be in stereo. Even if it is in stereo, R-0513 will still remain a rarity, because of the limited availability of this massive set.

Thanks to Lars M. Banke for information and scan.

"Bob Dylan - Pack 20"- vinyl album releases, CBS/Sony SOPQ 11 (Japan), 1974; CBS/Sony/Jigu Records KJPL-0045 (South Korea), 1975:
This is a single album with 10 tracks per side, Vol. 18 of a series of "Pack 20" albums with the same 10/10 track format.

The Japanese release comes in a gatefold sleeve with an orange, black, blue and white obi. There is a double-sided insert which is attached to the inside of the gatefold sleeve at the centre, with eight black-and-white photos of Bob, text in Japanese, and tracklisting. There are also advertisements for all the "Pack 20" LPs. This LP also has a four page booklet with lyrics in Japanese and English (not shown). The Japanese record has unique dark red "Pack 20" record labels.

Tracklisting:

Side 1: Like A Rolling Stone; Subterranean Homesick Blues; Just Like A Woman; Rainy Day Women #12 & 35; I'll be Your Baby Tonight; All Along The Watchtower; Lay, Lady, Lay; The Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo); Watching The River Flow; I Shall be Released.

Side 2: Blowin' In The Wind' Don't Think Twice, It's All Right; Song To Woody; The Times They Are A-Changin'; North Country Blues; It Ain't Me, Babe; Positively 4th Street; If Not For You; Knockin' On Heaven's Door.

Shawn Chambers informs me the version of Positively 4th Street on this album is 3:53, so it's not the 4:12 alternate mix R-0049 that appeared on earlier Japanese compilations. Because it's now included on the remastered US release of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits (it's also on the non-US release The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2, see 2000), R-0049 has ceased to be a rarity, and has been moved to the new Released Rarities page! The mono version of R-0049, R-0049M, remains a rarity and is still listed for 1965 and 1966.The version on the 2010 release The Best Of The Original Mono Recordings is only 3:51, see The Best Of The Original Mono Recordings (2010).

Hans Seegers has three sleeve variations, one of which is a promo. The variations are in the colours of the circles: light-brown and violet, dark-brown and violet, and black and lavender.

CBS/Sony/Jigu Records KJPL-0045 (South Korea), 1975:

CBS/Sony/Jigu Records KJPL-0045 (South Korea) - front scan by Lars M. Banke

The 1975 South Korean release was manufactured by Jigu Records of Seoul on behalf of CBS/Sony. It does not have a gatefold sleeve, but has a double-sided lyrics insert. The record has the expected orange/cream labels, not the special "Pack 20" labels of the Japanese release. The copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - SOPQ 11 A4, Side 2 - SOPQ 11 B4. This means it was probably pressed from a Japanese master. The Side 2 label has a Korean language sticker, probably indicating authorisation from the Korean Ministry of Culture.

"Bob Dylan - New Gift Pack"- deluxe 2LP boxed set, CBS/Sony SOPZ 53-54 (Japan), late 1974:
This album contains the rarity A Fool Such As I (R-0099), so full details are on the 1974 page. Shawn Chambers says: "This is Vol. 8 in the New Gift Pack Series issued Nov 1974. It is a limited edition 2-record box set issued with a lyric insert." Wil Gielen points out that the Dylan discography on one page of the Japanese booklet (see 1974) ends with Dylan (CBS/Sony SOPL-236), a late 1974 release in Japan, so this may support the late 1974 date. The album had two four-page folded inserts in English and Japanese. an information booklet and a lyrics booklet.

The front and rear sleeves are the same as the Japanese album above, but on the rear sleeve of the first and second variants the Japanese catalogue information shown in the detail picture above is blacked out with new text "Trademark owned by COLUMBIA BROADCASTING SYSTEM INC. and SONY CORPORATION. Manufactured and distributed in Singapore by EMI (SINGAPORE) PTE. LIMITED and in Malaysia by EMI (MALAYSIA) SDN, BHD." Tracklisting is the same as the Japanese album.

The record of this rare album has black/orange CBS/Sony labels and the first copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1- SOPO-59-A, Side 2- SOPO-59-B (Gerd Rundel's copy has the same matrix numbers). Paul Shenton's copy has a West Malaysian EMI sales sticker on the front, but the rear sleeve still has the original Japanese text so is identical to the Japanese rear sleeve shown above. The record labels have slightly different circumference text, with the words "AND UNAUTHORISED" missing. On the Side 1 label "ASCAP" after Don't Think Twice, It's All Right on line 2 below the centre hole is misprinted as "ASCA". The handwritten record matrix numbers are now: Side 1- SOPO-59A (not "59-A"), Side 2- SOPO-59B (not "59-B"). Lars M. Banke's copy is different again, with what looks like a Japanese sleeve with a "MADE IN MALAYSIA" sticker on the rear and no overprinting. The record again handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1- SOPO-59-A, Side 2- SOPO-59-B (same as Gerd Rundel's copy). "AND UNAUTHOSRISED" is again missing in the circumference text but "ASCAP" on the Side 1 label is printed correctly.

This album had the front photo from the 1971 US Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II album and the following tracklist:

Side 1: Blowing In The Wind; It Ain't Me Babe; If Not For You; Lay, Lady, Lay; Like A Rolling Stone

Side 2: Mr. Tambourine Man; Subterranean Homesick Blues; I Want You; Positively 4th Street; Just Like A Woman.

This was the first edition of this exclusive to Brazil compilation, the most reissued of all Dylan Brazilian albums. It was released in 1975, some months after Blood On The Tracks. it was the first (of three) Dylan albums manufactured in Brazil by Discos Copacabana (based in Sao Bernardo do Campo). Records like these made by them for other companies have on the labels only "Som Indústria E Comercio S.A.". This company also made the first Brazilian CBS releases of Desire and Hard Rain. The sleeve is made of heavy cardboard. There is a difference on the front: the mono information above the CBS logo, printed in white lettering, is noticeably lighter than on all subsequent reissues. The text at the bottom of the rear sleeve is longer than that of the 1980s release. The orange CBS record labels are very different from those of the 1977 release, with the tracklist in italics and no songs listed above the centre hole. The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSLP 427 2A G3, Side 2 - XSLP 428 1A G3.

The second release of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 1 from 1977 was manufactured by Gravaçôes Eléctricas S.A. (São Paulo). It was also the manufacturer of the second release of Desire. Both the 1975 and 1977 records have song titles in English only and the record of the 1977 copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSLP-427-A, Side 2 - XSLP-428-A.

These records now have yellow/orange Discos CBS labels instead of plain orange but come in the same sleeve as the 1977 release. The record labels are both different from the 1980s variants, there is no C.G.C. number in a box to the right of the centre hole. The first record (variant 1) has labels with a manufacturer's name of Nacional Discos, Ltda, and a different São Paulo address from that of Gravaçôes Eléctricas S.A. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSLP 427 1A, Side 2 - XSLP 428 1A. The second record (variant 2) has a Discos CBS address in Rio de Janeiro and the catalogue number to the right of the centre hole is longer. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSLP 427 I 137904 A, Side 2 - XSLP 428 I 137904 B.

The 1980s release has the same front sleeve but shorter copyright text on the rear sleeve. The record again has orange/yellow Discos CBS labels but now with a C.G.C. number reinstated to the right of the centre hole. It again has the Discos CBS address in Rio de Janeiro. Manuel's copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSLP-427 I  137904-A, Side 2 - XSLP-428 II 137904-B. Lars M. Banke has a copy in the same sleeve but with a different C.G.C. number on the record labels. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSLP427 I, Side 2 - XSLP428 II.

There were two releases, both in the same sleeve. The first has "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS SUGAR" at the bottom of the labels, the second has just "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS" in the same position, still aligned as if "SUGAR" were present. The second release copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - CI 62911 1L/1, Side 2 - CI 62911 2L/2. Both sides also have "15 4 77" (15 Apr 1977) stamped, which is presumably the mastering date.

This single cassette compilation looks like a promo from the orange card insert, the monochrome artwork and because it has no price. It contains 20 tracks from Golden Grand Prix 30 below, but not the same selection as the South Korean 1978 release Bob Dylan also below. It's also not the same as Grand Prix 20 above. The cassette is white and has orange CBS/Sony paper labels. There is also a double-sided lyrics insert in English.

Side 1: One More Cup Of Coffee; Like A Rolling Stone; Lay, Lady, Lay; Rainy Day Women #12 & 35; If Not For You; Love Minus Zero/No Limit; New Morning; All Along The Watchtower; Mozambique; Shelter From the Storm.
Side 2: Blowin' In The Wind; The Times They Are A-Changin'; Song To Woody; Mr. Tambourine Man; Don't Think Twice, It's All Right; I Shall Be Released; You Ain't Goin' Nowhere; Just Like A Woman; Tangled Up In Blue; Knockin' On Heaven's Door.

"Golden Grand Prix 30" - compilation 2LP set, CBS/Sony 40AP 465-466 (Japan), early 1977, re-released late 1977:

CBS/Sony 40AP 465-466 (Japan) - front with obi, scan by Wil Gielen (first release)
This 2LP set with unique artwork was housed in a gatefold sleeve with a full-sized lyrics booklet in Japanese and English in the centre. There was also a double-sided insert in Japanese. The front picture has a gold foil rectangle in the centre with a Rolling Thunder Revue picture of Bob and the title embossed below. Note the rear picture shows Bob in front of a crucifix, predating his Christian conversion. All the 30 tracks are the regular stereo album versions (all the tracks from Grand Prix 20 are included, see 1976 above).

There was a black and gold obi with price ¥4,000 (the "40" in the catalogue number indicated the price). The album was released twice in 1977 with different obis, the second wider obi released in late 1977 listed the 1978 Japanese Bob Dylan tour dates, including the Tokyo Budokan shows from which Live At Budokan was taken.

This rare 16-track release was manufactured by Jigu Records in South Korea on behalf of CBS/Sony in Japan. (The name of the country is printed as just "Korea".) It uses the same artwork as the Japanese Golden Grand Prix 30 album above (without the embossed title under the picture) and has the same catalogue number as the first album of that set (40AP 465) on the label. The tracks are taken from Golden Grand Prix 30, Side 1 is a selection from Record 1, and Side 2 is a selection from Record 2. It was re-released in 1990 as CBS/Sony/Jigu CPL-1109. Tracklisting:

Side 1: Like A Rolling Stone; All Along The Watchtower; Love Minus Zero/No Limit; I Want You; One More Cup Of Coffee; New Morning; Highway 61 Revisited; Mozambique.

Side 2: Don't Think Twice, It's All Right; It Ain't Me, Babe; It's All Over Now, Baby Blue; My Back Pages; If Not For You; You Ain't Goin' Nowhere; I'll Be Your Baby Tonight; Knockin' On Heaven's Door.

The promo album has the same sleeve as the commercial release, with a promo impressed stamp with the words “NOT FOR SALE PROMOTION USE ONLY" on the front that is difficult to scan (shown below). Strangely enough the promo record has white labels with the CBS/Sony logo, while the commercial record has orange/cream Japanese CBS/Sony style labels but with just the CBS logo. Both labels have the same South Korean government approval date, 15 Feb 1978. The Korean characters to the left of the centre hole on the promo label show it's a promo.

The 1978 record has handwritten matrix numbers: KJPL-0143 A/B. The 1990 record is credited just to CBS Records with title "GREATEST HITS" and has a completely different label design. The label has a government approval date of 8 Dec 1990 and a release date of 30 Dec 1990.

Christopher Burton says: "I have a copy of the commercial release of the South Korean Bob Dylan compilation (CBS/Jigu KJPL-0143) which I was lucky to find still sealed. It has a different plastic inner sleeve to that pictured on your site - it is transparent on one side and printed in white on the other with lots of small Jigu logos in a checkerboard effect. Incidentally, the cover has a 1977 copyright date on the back, whereas the 1990 re-release (CPL-1109), which I also have in my collection, has a 1978 copyright date on the cover. Presumably the first issue cannot have been released until at least 1978 however as the labels have a 1978 government approval date."

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

For full details of this release exclusive to Japan and Australia/New Zealand which contained several tracks unavailable elsewhere on albums, see 1978. As can be seen, the first 1991 Australian cassette and CD releases after the label change from CBS to Columbia used a different front picture, but the original picture was replaced for the final 1990s releases. As far as I know no cassette or CD versions were released in Japan.

All twelve tracks on this LP are the standard album versions, although Changing Of The Guards is the original Street-Legal version now available on CD only on 1994's Greatest Hits Vol. 3. All the song titles are given in Spanish and English. Although the title of the album is Forever Young, the song is not on the album (the rights to Planet Waves were still owned by Asylum/Hispavox in 1978 and the live version from Bob Dylan At Budokan was still unreleased in Spain). Tracklisting:

Side 1: Changing Of The Guards; Blowin' In The Wind; The Times They Are A-Changin'; Mr. Tambourine Man; Like A Rolling Stone; Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

Side 2: All Along The Watchtower; Girl From The North Country (version with Johnny Cash from Nashville Skyline); Lay, Lady, Lay; Knockin' On Heaven's Door; If You See Her, Say Hello; Hurricane

Both the sleeve and the record were made in Spain. The album rear has the text: "DISCO PROMOCIONAL PROHIBIDA SU VENTA [PROMOTIONAL DISC SALE PROHIBITED]", and the same text is stamped on the white CBS record labels. The front of Manuel García Jara's copy also has a green sticker with this text in black, missing from Hans Seegers' copy.

The rear sleeve shows 20 Dylan albums, ending with Street-Legal. A few of the album titles are translated into Spanish, but most are given in English.

There are also US (1988) and UK (1990) promo CDs with the title Forever Young, with completely different track listings from this and each other, see the 1980s and 1990s links below.

Manuel García Jara explains more about this very rare release:

"Usually a compilation of previously released tracks has two purposes:

  1. As an introduction to the work of an artist, usually released in some countries where records of this artist were scarce or still unreleased: e.g. Poeta O Profeta (Argentina/Uruguay, 1967) or Los Más Grandes Éxitos De Bob Dylan (Venezuela, 1972)
  2. With a strictly commercial purpose (most part of worldwide compilations)

However, these two reasons were not applicable to Spain in 1978: all Dylan albums were already released in Spain and this album was made as a strictly promotional record.

Why did CBS Spain make this album? In the 1970s the Dylan bibliography in the Spanish language was very, very scarce; the few books available at the time were very subjective and they were full of errors, rumours and wrong information; it was very usual at this moment to read in magazines and to hear on the radio a lot of rumours ("Bob is doing an album sung entirely in Spanish"), ridiculous information ("Bob wrote "Sad-Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands" with a lipstick") and a lot of wrong news. Many professionals in the media asked CBS Spain for a serious and rigorous work... and then CBS made this set, exclusively for music professionals, where the record is a complement of the dossier and not vice versa. The complete set includes the album (only 200 un-numbered copies) and a 14-page dossier written by Diego A. Manrique. This album is extremely rare but the value as a collector's item decreases if this dossier is missing.

It was released in late 1978, after the release of Street-Legal (Changing Of The Guards is included in the album) and before the release of Bob Dylan At Budokan. The sleeve is fully laminated and was printed by Indugraf, one of two CBS printers (Offset ALG is the other). The front has a green sticker with the text "Disco Promocional / Prohibida Su Venta"; this is missing from the copy shown (you can see a similar sticker on front of the Various Artists Compilation Especial FM Vol. 1 also released in 1978).

The full discography of Bob is shown on the rear (except the two albums released by Asylum). Note the mistake: the title Bringing It All Back Home is given as just "Bringing" and some albums have Spanish titles or the English title as they were known in Spain: A Bright New Name In Folk Music (the debut album, 1962) or Bob Dylan (1973) instead of Dylan.

The 14-page dossier includes a year by year chronology about Bob and his work, including bibliography and filmography available in Spain . The purpose of this set is clearly explained on page 2."

Thanks to Hans Seegers and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

Bob Dylan/Rolling Thunder Revue - "Rock Around The World" - radio station LP, program 91 "Bob Dylan And The Rolling Thunder Revue" (USA), 1978:

Side A scan by Hans Seegers
This radio show LP presented by John Brody comes with a white sleeve with the programme handwritten on it in green. It includes interviews with Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Mick Ronson, Rob Stoner, Scarlet Rivera, tour director Lou Kemp and Rubin Carter.

Dylan's contribution is:

Side 1: Hurricane (0:17 excerpt); Mr. Tambourine Man (1:50 excerpt)

Side 2: Blowin' In The Wind (0:43 excerpt); Black Diamond Bay (complete); Desolation Row (2:30 excerpt); Hurricane (8:30 faded out); One More Cup Of Coffee (complete).

Because these excerpts are unique and not released on commercial/promo records, they are no longer listed with R-numbers.

"Bob Dylan: A Musical Biography" - test pressing and radio station discs, Rock And Religion RR-91/94, Sacramento, CA (USA), 1979:

Thanks to Philip Bull for information: "It sounds as if there may have been four "Rock And Religion" shows about Dylan spread across two LPs. The cue sheet from my LP says "This is the beginning of a four-part series entitled "Bob Dylan: A Musical Biography". Each show lasts 28 minutes 30 seconds and the records would have been distributed to radio stations and intended for broadcast. My copy was given to me by someone who used to present the Sunday morning religion show on Piccadilly Radio in Manchester back in the 1970s and he acquired it while working for a radio station in the US. Lengthy excerpts of Dylan's music are featured, often with commentary spoken over instrumental passages. There is no unreleased music on the LP and no Dylan interview material. Show One opens with a live Blowin' in the Wind probably taken from the Bob Dylan At Budokan LP while Show Two inexplicably opens with the instrumental intro to "Stage Fright" by The Band from Before The Flood!"

This corrects an erroneous entry on the Interviews with Bob page that these programmes contained interview material.

RR-91/92 (USA) - sleeve front scan by Philip Bull

Gerd Rundel has a 1981 test pressing of Parts I and II (RR-91/RR-92) made by H.V. Waddell Co., Burbank, CA (USA). The Side 1 label has no text, the Side 2 label has stamped “OCT 29 1979” (29 Oct 1979) and “R R 91-92”. The test pressing record comes in an original black and white "Rock Scope" sleeve and has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - RR-91, Side 2 - RR-92. The rear sleeve differs slightly from the front sleeve in that it has copyright text at the bottom of the central "Rock Scope" logo, missing from the front sleeve.

RR-91 "The Protest Years" covers the early years in Dylan's career, from 1961-1964, when he would have "an incalculable effect on the growing radicalisation of young America".

RR-92 "Dylan the Prophet" covers the years 1964-1973 when Dylan "pioneered mystical visionary music and became a hip existential hero, leading the way to a kind of karmic spirituality".

The Dylan content is as follows:

RR-91: Blowin' In The Wind (live performance from Bob Dylan At Budokan, partly talked over, full length); With God On Our Side (partly talked over, 3:45 excerpt); The Times They Are A-Changin' (fadeout at 3:07); It Ain't Me, Babe; Maggie's Farm (live performance from Bob Dylan At Budokan, (partly talked over, 3:10 excerpt); Positively 4th Street (partly talked over, 2:35 excerpt); My Back Pages (partly talked over, 2:50 excerpt).

RR-92: Stage Fright by The Band from Before The Flood (intro only); Mr. Tambourine Man (live performance from Bob Dylan At Budokan, partly talked over, 3:45 excerpt); Like A Rolling Stone (partly talked over, 3:00 excerpt); Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 (partly talked over, 4:22 excerpt); Visions Of Johanna (partly talked over, 3:02 excerpt); All Along The Watchtower (partly talked over, full length); Lay, Lady, Lay (0:55 excerpt); Tonight I'll be Staying Here With You (live performance from Bob Dylan At Budokan, 0:28 excerpt); If Not For You (0:50 excerpt); New Morning (partly talked over, 0:55 excerpt); Forever Young (live performance from Bob Dylan At Budokan, partly talked over, 3:45 excerpt).

The second record shown on left (RR-93 and RR-94) contains two half-hour radio broadcasts combining tracks from Bob's Slow Train Coming album with commentary from the hosts interpreting the songs. Again, there is no interview material.

The Dylan content is as follows (all songs are partly talked over):

RR-93: Shelter From The Storm (live performance from Hard Rain, 4:05 excerpt); Hurricane (5:34 excerpt); One More Cup Of Coffee (0:20 excerpt); Isis (3:39 excerpt); I Threw It All Away (live performance from Hard Rain, 3:11 fadeout); Oh, Sister; Sara.

RR-94: A Satisfied Mind; Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power) (0:25 excerpt); When You Gonna Wake Up (5:16 fadeout); Gotta Serve Somebody; Solid Rock; I Believe In You (5:16 fadeout).

Shows 91-94 were re-aired as "Bob Dylan: A Musical Biography Parts I to IV" in 1981: Show 143 (22 Feb 1981), Show 144 (1 Mar 1981), Show 145 (8 Mar 1981), Show 146 (15 Mar 1981). See the 1980s part of this section.

Philip Bull adds: "Incidentally, I also have another LP in the "Rock And Religion" series which deals with Punk Rock. This one features excerpts from the music of the Sex Pistols, the Clash and the Damned interspersed with two clean-cut announcers warning listeners to steer well clear of the evil influence of punk. It's actually far more entertaining than the Dylan show though neither of them is the kind of record you would want to listen to more than once."
