Thanks to Michel Pomarede for information that the book
Bob is holding is "FLEMISH PAINTING FROM BOSCH TO RUBENS", by Jacques
Lassaigne, published by Albert Skira, 1958. The photo by Jerry Schatzberg on the
album sleeve is reversed - it shows the front of the book, not the back, as is
suggested.
This page includes all stereo releases of the 1967 album released in the UK and elsewhere with a different tracklist from the US 1967 Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits album (see International Albums (Regular)). It has been separated from International Album Releases (Dylan-only Compilations) 1960s because of the large number of releases of the album. This album is also included on the 1967 page because some editions contain rarities! The mono releases of this album are listed in 1967 and International Mono Releases - Dylan-Only Compilations 1960s.
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Vinyl and Tape Releases - UK
"Greatest Hits" - stereo vinyl compilation LP, CBS SBPG 62847
(UK), Jan 1967, re-released 1975; CBS S 62847 (UK), 1985; CBS 460907 1 (UK), 1988:
The release date of this album is usually given as 1967 because it entered the
UK album charts on 14 Jan 1967. However, Brian Grist thinks he first saw the
album on sale between 26 and 31 Dec 1966. Ian Woodward says the release date was
actually Jan 1967, probably 7 Jan, so the record shop Brian visited must have the albums on sale
early.
CBS SBPG 62847 (UK) - front scan by Hans Seegers (first release) |
This album has the same serial number as the 1967 French Greatest Hits release with the US
tracklist (see International
Albums (Regular). The stereo version was released in at least nine countries
world-wide as well as the UK: Greece, Holland, Italy, Spain, Portugal,
India, Israel, Kenya and New Zealand (mono only, see International Mono Releases - Dylan-Only
Compilations 1960s). This release had a different front sleeve picture (by Jerry Schatzberg from the Blonde On Blonde sessions) and a different tracklist from the US version - Positively 4th Street is missing (which means that every track here had previously appeared on LP in the UK), but is replaced by She Belongs To Me. (This swap was reversed on the second Greatest Hits UK and US vinyl albums!) There are two additional tracks: It's All Over Now, Baby Blue and One Of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later). The rear sleeve shows six Dylan albums omitting Another Side Of Bob Dylan. Bob Johnston's name is misspelled "Bob Johnson". This UK tracklist is:
Thanks to Michel Pomarede for information that the book Bob is holding is "FLEMISH PAINTING FROM BOSCH TO RUBENS", by Jacques Lassaigne, published by Albert Skira, 1958. The photo on the album sleeve is reversed - it shows the front of the book, not the back, as the alternate shots by Jerry Schatzberg of Bob holding the book show. The illustration on the front of the book is a detail from "The Adoration of the Magi" by Peter Paul Rubens, the 1624 version of the painting. |

Whether the 1960s UK pressings actually contain R-0656 is now in doubt since on my copy listed below Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 is the full album version at 4:35, despite being listed as 2:06 on the sleeve. Hans Seegers believes that only the non-UK pressings of this album such as the Greek releases listed below had the 2:06 edit! This compilation was released in Italy as Il Meglio Di Bob Dylan N. 1 in 1976, see International Album Releases (Dylan-only Compilations 1970s). On that LP Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 was listed as 4:35.
I also previously reported that One Of Us Must Know (Sooner Or Later) was an unfaded stereo version (R-0537, see 1967). However, it now appears that this is incorrect and R-0537 has been removed from the Rarities list.
The US tracklist is:
Side 1: Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35 (album version); Blowin' In The Wind; Subterranean Homesick Blues; Like A Rolling Stone
Side 2: Positively 4th Street (1965 single); The Times They Are A-Changin'; It Ain't Me, Babe; Mr. Tambourine Man; I Want You; Just Like A Woman
There are an incredible number of variants of this UK album, several of which I am sure were released at the same time as one another from different UK suppliers to CBS Records, and many more are now listed here than were listed in my article in "Isis" magazine in 2011.
Harald Sigvartsen comments: "The Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits release are found in various formations, and the UK 1967 release is no exception. When I first started collecting Bob Dylan’s back catalogue (my first albums were bought back in 1997), I wasn’t aware that there were various configurations of these albums. In fact, your website has over the years been an invaluable source of information, and I’m happy to be able to contribute to your website.
To the point: I’ve discovered some discrepancies that I think should be pointed out on the page for the UK Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits. This discrepancy also appears on a Dutch Greatest Hits release. The thing I’ve discovered, after a “forensic” approach, is that song number two on side two of the original release (and subsequent releases, including releases in other countries) has a slight mistitling. The song in question is One of Us Must Know (Sooner Or Later), which everywhere, including the album’s front cover, just bears the title "One of Us Must Know". This is repeated also on the CD version, which is the one I have – and thus became aware of this. I’ve checked the page for the album thoroughly, and it became more and more plain that this mistake has never been corrected. And if it wasn’t a mistake, one can only speculate in why the song’s title was changed.
I see that the Blonde On Blonde album has the abbreviated title, "One of Us Must Know", around the edge on the inside of the gatefold, so this may be the source for this “mistitling”, though the song’s full title is listed on the record label. This fact is maybe worth pointing out on the page for the Blonde On Blonde release.
On the music cassette tape releases from 1974 and onwards, this mistitling also appears. In addition there is also another misspelling, but an innocent one. The song Rainy Day Women Nos. 12 & 35 is named “Rainy Day Women Nos. 12 and 35”. This goes for both inlay card and cassette label. Should this be mentioned on your website? Not a big thing, I know, but nevertheless…
As mentioned above, even on foreign releases the mistake with “One of Us Must Know” is repeated. Also, like on the Spanish languish releases where the titles were translated, this is consequently the song’s title. I’m thinking of the Spanish Grandes Exitos from the 1970s and upwards. But even non-translated foreign releases has this mistitling. The source for this may be, as my hypothesis is, the ”Blonde On Blonde” gatefold sleeve – where the song is only called “One of Us Must Know”."
CBS SBPG 62847 (UK) Orange label releases - first release (Dec 1966/Jan 1967):
Hans Seegers' first release copy has a laminated front sleeve with three fold-over flaps, printed "STEREO"/arrows logos on the front and rear of the sleeve, and the catalogue number is listed as "SBPG 62847" on the rear. The record shows the playing speed as "33" on both sides and the songs are credited to "Blossom Music" and "B. Feldman" with individual publishing dates. All songs on Side 1 are credited to "Blossom Music" and on Side 2 tracks 1 and 3 are credited to "Blossom Music" while tracks 2, 4, 5 and 6 are credited to "B. Feldman". There are no track timings.
On the Side 2 label, producer Bob Johnston's name is misspelled as "Bob Johnson". This mistake was repeated on the labels of all the releases. The rear sleeve has the printer information at bottom left and the CBS copyright information at bottom right. It was printed by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. and has "GB" printed vertically at bottom right.
CBS SBPG 62847 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Hans Seegers (first 1960s
release, printed by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd.)
Per Erik Dahlberg has an unusual copy in a mono sleeve printed by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. with three folded-over flaps and a red "STEREO" stamp on the rear as the Lars M. Banke copy below. The record labels have "33⅓" as the playing speed, not "33", but the record has first release matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBPG 62847 A1, Side 2 - SBPG 62847 B1. Per is sure that, while other tracks are definitely in stereo, It Ain't Me Babe and The Times They Are A-Changin' are definitely in mono.
Larry Naeve has a copy where the record has first release labels with the playing speed of "33", but it comes in a third release sleeve like my copy below with a gold foil "Stereo" sticker on the rear sleeve. Larry bought this album in the 1960s, so it seems unlikely that an incorrect sleeve and record have been matched by a dealer - CBS UK must have found stock of the older record labels around 1968 and used them up!
CBS SBPG 62847 (UK) Orange label releases - second release (late 1967):
CBS SBPG 62847 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (second 1960s
release, printed by Ernest J. Day & Co. Ltd.)
The record of Gerd Rundel's second release copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBPG 62847 A2, Side 2 - SBPG 62847 B2. This copy has mixed record labels: the Side 1 label is the same as the first release and has "33" as the playing speed, and multiple publication dates (1963-65). All songs on Side 1 are still credited to "Blossom Music". The Side 2 label is the same as my third release copy below with "33⅓" in small text as the playing speed. On Side 2 tracks 1 and 3 are credited to "Blossom Music" while tracks 2, 4, 5 and 6 are credited to "B. Feldman". This time all tracks are shown as "(P) 1966". Again, there are no track timings.
Paul Shenton has a copy with the second release sleeve, but this time it has a printed red stereo/arrows logo on the rear sleeve, above the Side 2 song titles. The record has unusual mixed labels. The Side 1 label has a large "33⅓" to the left of the centre hole instead of the smaller "33⅓" on Gerd Rundel's Side 2 label. To the right of the centre hole all tracks are credited as "1-6 Blossom Music" on three lines. All tracks are shown as "(P) 1966". Paul's Side 2 label is the same as Gerd's and also the same as my third release Side 2 label.
Manuel García Jara has a copy with the same record labels as Paul Shenton's variant 2 second release above on both Side 1 and Side 2. This copy comes in a first release sleeve. Manuel has another copy with exactly the same record labels which came in an Italian sleeve as shown below! Lars M. Banke also has a copy with these labels that came in the second release sleeve.
Lars M. Banke's copy comes in a mono sleeve with a red "STEREO" stamp on the rear, which has three folded-over flaps. The record has the same labels as Manuel's copy immediately above with a large "33⅓" on both sides. The record has the same stamped matrix numbers as Gerd Rundel's copy above: Side 1 - SBPG 62847 A2, Side 2 - SBPG 62847 B2.
CBS SBPG 62847 (UK) Orange label releases - third release (1968):
CBS SBPG 62847 (UK) - detail of rear (third 1960s release, printed by
Ernest J. Day & Co. Ltd., printer's name on single line)
CBS Sbpg 62847 (UK) - two variants
CBS SBPG 62847 (UK) - three variants
Bizarrely, Paul has a second copy with the same sleeve and Side 1 record label as mine, but with a second variant of the "SBPG 62847" Side 2 label! On this label (2B) the circumference text is slightly skewed, "BOB DYLAN" and "GREATEST HITS" are printed slightly lower, and to the right of the centre hole the text "SBPG 62847 B" is printed higher.
Paul's third copy of this third release has the same Side 2 label as his first copy, but it now has a matching Side 1 label with the larger text (2C). The Times They Are A-Changin' is wrongly shown as having been produced by John Hammond, not Tom Wilson. This again comes in the same sleeve with a gold foil "STEREO" sticker.
Orange label third release sleeve variants:
CBS SBPG 62847 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Lars M. Banke (alternate third 1960s release, printer's
name missing, "GB" vertically at bottom right)
CBS SBPG 62847 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Lars M. Banke (alternate
third 1960s release similar to second 1960s release rear, printed by Ernest J.
Day & Co. Ltd. but with printer's name as third line at bottom right, "GB" missing)
CBS SBPG 62847 (UK) Orange label releases - fourth release (1968-69):
CBS SBPG 62847 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Hans Seegers (fourth 1960s release, printer's
name missing, "GB" vertically at bottom right)
The fourth release from 1968-69 has the same front sleeve as the second and third releases without a catalogue number, but a different rear sleeve with no stereo indication next to the CBS logo at top right and no printer's name at bottom right. On the record labels the credit to Blossom Music has been replaced by Kinney Music. All songs on Side 1 are credited to "Kinney Music Ltd." and on Side 2 tracks 1 and 3 are credited to "Kinney Music Ltd." while tracks 2, 5 and 6 are credited to "Big Ben Music Ltd." and only track 4 remains credited to "B. Feldman & Co. Ltd.". Again all tracks are shown as "(P) 1966" and there are no track timings. The playing speed is again "33⅓". Paul Shenton also has a copy with this sleeve.
CBS SBPG 62847 (UK) Orange/yellow labels - first release (mid 1970s):
This orange/yellow (sunburst) label design was introduced in the UK in 1975 with The Basement Tapes. The number of orange/yellow label variants is very confusing, and there are so many that several of these variants must have been released at the same time, with sleeves and labels coming from different printers.
CBS SBPG 62847 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Lars M. Banke (first mid 1970s release, printer's
name and "GB" missing at bottom right)
On Side 1 all the music credits are to "Kinney Music" and on Side 2 they are: 1, 3 - Kinney Music, 2, 5, 6 - Big Ben Music Ltd., 4 - B. Feldman & Co. Ltd. Thanks to Paul Shenton for pointing out that on this release Side 2 label the track time of Just Like A Woman (track 4) is incorrectly shown as "4:32" (it should be "4:52").
Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy with this sleeve but with the same plain orange record labels as Hans Seegers' fourth release copy above. Patrick Helfrich has a copy with the same orange/yellow labels as these with the artist/album title on one line that comes in the sleeve for the third 1970s release listed below.
CBS SBPG 62847 (UK) Orange/yellow labels - second release (mid 1970s, reissued after 1977):
Paul Shenton has two copies where the records have orange/yellow labels and come in a sleeve without a "STEREO" sticker on the rear, still with the stereo information box across the bottom, and the printer's name of Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd. at bottom right. The front sleeve is the same as for the previous release. The records have catalogue number "S 62847" and the artist/album title on two lines. "MADE IN ENGLAND" is still at the bottom of the labels. The music credits on sides 1 and 2 are the same as for Lars M. Banke's copy above, with the addition of a message on Side 2 "As from the 1st Jan 1972 the above titles are no longer controlled by B. FELDMAN & CO." The only difference between the two pairs of labels is that the EU Label Code "LC|0149" denoting CBS Records is the first line of text to the right of the centre hole on the second label. This was introduced after 1977, and indicates that this release was later than the releases listed below which don't have the "LC|0149" code. These second labels are the same as Manuel García Jara's first 1985 copy, see below.
CBS S 62847 (UK) - detail of rear, photocopy by Paul Shenton (second mid 1970s
releases, printed by Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd.)
CBS SBPG 62847 (UK) Orange/yellow labels - third release (late 1970s):
CBS SBPG 62847 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Hans Seegers (third 1970s release, printed
by Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd., PPL Ganton Street address from after 1977)
Arie de Reus has a 1978 UK Tour Press Pack including a copy of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits. The sleeve is the same as the fourth 1960s release above, but the record has orange/yellow labels. The rear sleeve has a gold CBS promo stamp as shown below.
CBS (S) BPG 62847 (Ireland) Orange/yellow labels - late 1970s (three variants):
Thanks to Gerd Rundel for finding a rare 1970s Irish release on eBay with orange/yellow CBS labels with what I've called the third 1970s label design with catalogue number "(S) BPG 62847" and the artist/album title on two lines. The record was made in Ireland, but it has the third 1970s release UK sleeve as above. Thanks to Hans Seegers for the label scans (variant 3).
Arie de Reus has an Irish copy with a record with the same label design but it has "Made in Ireland" stamped over the English labels - this is almost certainly earlier (variant 2). The record of Lars M. Banke's copies also have "Made in Ireland" stamped over the English labels, but on his copies "Made in Ireland" is stamped directly over the printed "MADE IN ENGLAND" (variants 1A and 1B)!
CBS S 62847 (UK) Orange/yellow labels - fourth release (1985, three variants):
CBS S 62847 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Hans Seegers (1985 release, printed
by Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd.)
There are three variants of the orange/yellow labels: the first (copies owned by Paul Shenton pictured in "Isis" magazine #151 and by Manuel García Jara) has "MADE IN ENGLAND" at bottom centre. As the 1970s releases, on the Side 1 record label all tracks are credited to "Kinney Music" and on Side 2 tracks 1 and 3 are credited to "Kinney Music Ltd." while tracks 2, 5 and 6 are credited to "Big Ben Music Ltd." and only track 4 remains credited to "B. Feldman". The track timings are included, showing track 5 on Side 2 as 4:35, although it's still listed as 2:06 on the rear sleeve. The songs all have a copyright date of "(P) 1966" below the catalogue number. This is actually the same as Paul Shenton's second copy, see above. Like Paul Shenton's second copy above, all these record labels have the EU Label Code "LC|0149" denoting CBS Records as the first line of text to the right of the centre hole on the second label. This was introduced after 1977.
Thanks also to Paul Shenton for pointing out that on all three of these "S 62847" orange/yellow label variants, and also on the first of the "S 62847" red label variants below, there is an underscore beneath the first of the two asterisks following "MR. TAMBOURINE MAN" on line 4 of the song titles. This oddity is not present on the two orange/yellow label variants below with the mono catalogue number "BPG 62847" (which I've now called the fifth release), nor on the second "S 62847" red label variant.
CBS S 62847 (UK) Orange/yellow labels - fifth release (mid 1980s, two variants):
CBS S 62847 (UK) Red labels - first release (mid/late 1980s):
CBS S 62847 (UK) Red labels - second release (mid/late 1980s):
CBS 460907 1 (UK) Red labels (1988):
CBS 460907 1 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Hans Seegers (1988 release,
new catalogue numbers on albums, no printer information)
CBS 460907 1 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Lars M. Banke (alternate 1988 release,
new catalogue numbers on albums, printer information at bottom right)
Manuel García Jara has a copy (now in my possession - thanks!) with the alternate sleeve with printer's information and the red CBS labels shown above. This copy has a unique fault on Side 2 - She Belongs To Me (2:48) appears correctly as track 5 on Side 1, but then is included incorrectly a second time on Side 2 as track 4, replacing Just Like A Woman (4:52). If you compare Side 2 of this album with Side 2 of a correctly pressed copy, it is easy to see that track 4 is much narrower than it should be! Paul Shenton has a copy with the same mistake with handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 460907 - 1 - A9, Side 2 - 460907 | B6. The "9" on Side 2 looks more like "°|" than a "9"! The matrix numbers on my copy are very difficult to read.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Gerd Rundel, Lars M. Banke, Manuel García Jara, Patrick Helfrich, Ian Woodward, Paul Shenton and Peter Oudejans for information and scans.
"Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits" - stereo 8-track cartridge releases: CBS 42-63482/18-KO-0220 (UK), 1968; CBS 42-63482 (UK), late 1960s (two variants):

These three releases are oddities!

Ronald Born has a CBS UK catalogue from 1974-75 that lists a UK 8-track stereo tape cartridge release, CBS 42-62847. A Dutch 8-track stereo tape cartridge with this catalogue number and the UK tracklist is listed below, but I have not yet found a UK release. Scans required! Thanks to Manuel García Jara, Éamonn Ó Catháin and Paul Shenton for information and pictures. |

cassette releases, CBS 40-62847 (UK), 1974 (three variants), re-released mid/late 1980s; CBS 460907 4 (UK), 1988:
David Burgess has a Jun 1970 CBS UK leaflet advertising the release of
Self Portrait
that lists this compact cassette!
There must therefore be a 1970 release - scans required!
CBS 40-62847 (UK), 1974 (three variants):
CBS 40-62847 (UK) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Manuel García Jara (first release, all variants) |
These UK cassettes are re-releases of the twelve-track 1967 UK Greatest Hits album with has the same track listing as above, although She Belongs To Me on Side 1 and Just Like A Woman on Side 2 are reversed. There are no track timings. These cassettes have two rarities, but I understand they do not have the unique edit of Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 (R-0656, 2:06). Details are therefore also listed in 1967 with the other rarity entries for this album. The surprise is that on some copies Like A Rolling Stone on Side 2 is the live version from the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival from Self Portrait, not the expected studio version from Highway 61 Revisited. There's no indication on the cassette insert. Hans Seegers informs me that this variant, obviously a CBS mistake, is known to collectors. | |||

Manuel García Jara has a copy of the first UK release from 1974, CBS 40-62847, which has a folded insert with one of Bob's Outlined Epitaphs from The Times They Are A Changin' on the inside. The cassette case is off-white, with orange paper CBS labels. Paul Shenton has a variant of the same release with the same outside insert but the inside is different - the CBS logo/catalogue number, the dotted line and the "CUT HERE" text are missing, and the vertical CBS copyright text has been centred. The cassettes are the same except that the first variant has "KOREA" embossed in the plastic at top right on both sides, but this is missing from the second variant. Paul has a second copy of this second variant with an identical insert, but the cassette now has "MADE IN U.S.A." embossed in the plastic on Side 1 only. Both of these cassettes have the expected version of Like A Rolling Stone from Highway 61 Revisited, not the live Isle of Wight version.
CBS 40-62847 (UK), re-released mid/late 1980s:
Phil Beale has a later cassette copy of this album. The insert can be dated as later than those of Paul Shenton and Manuel because of the anti-counterfeit pattern on the rear of the outside. The cassette has the same red CBS labels as Paul's copies (I don't know if it's white or black). Manuel has a copy that looks exactly the same as Phil's and says that Like A Rolling Stone and One Of Us Must Know are the regular stereo versions from Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde On Blonde. On this release apparently Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 is the 2:06 edit.
Paul Shenton has a different cassette copy of this album from around 1987 with the same insert with the anti-counterfeit pattern on the rear of the outside as Phil Beale's above. The cassette is completely different, light grey with printed text, there are no paper labels, similar to that of the 1988 release CBS 460907 4. On this release Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 is the full version, but Like A Rolling Stone is the live version from the Isle of Wight from Self Portrait!
CBS 460907 4 (UK), 1988 (two releases):
The UK cassette was re-released in 1988 with Dolby noise reduction and a new catalogue number of CBS 460907 4, corresponding to the new LP seventh release of CBS 460907 1, see above. The outside of the cassette insert now has the new CBS logo and a barcode. Just Like A Woman is track 5 on Side 1 (instead of Side 2) and She Belongs To Me is track 4 on Side 2 (instead of Side 1). The insert now has track timings. Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 is the full version (4:34), not the 2:06 edit (R-0656, see 1967). This time the cassette is light grey plastic with black text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels. Paul Shenton's later copy has a sticker with "The Greatest Hits Collection" on the front of the cassette case and a cassette that now is transparent smoked grey with white text. The text layout of both cassettes looks the same.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Phil Beale for information and scans.
Vinyl and Tape Releases - Other Countries
CBS S 62.847 (France) - front scan by Manuel García Jara |
Even though this album has the UK catalogue number,
the tracklist is the same as the US release in
International Album Releases (Regular).
As this release has three unique edits, it is also listed in
1967. Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scan. |
"Greatest Hits" - stereo vinyl compilation LP, CBS S 62847 (Italy), 1967 (twice), re-released 1971, mid-1970s:
CBS S 62847 (Italy) - detail of rear, scan by Hans Seegers (both releases -
CBS Italiana information, printer name "Stampa Reparto Grafico C.G.D." on right)
CBS S 62847 (Italy) - detail of rear of inner sleeve, scan by Sergio Mariano
Romay (first release -
CBS Italiana information, printer name "Stampa Reparto Grafico C.G.D."
again on right)
Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy of the first release with a partial stamp "A C..." on the rear sleeve. The record comes in the CBS Italy ionner sleeve as shown with details of other CBS albums including John Wesley Harding, which dates the sleeve as 1968.
Lars M. Banke has a copy of the second release in the same sleeve but with variant record labels. The difference is to the right of the centre hole, where "(P) 1967" is missing and "DR" in a box has been shifted to the left. These labels are damaged because stickers have been removed from both sides, but the text can still be read.
Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, track 5 on Side 2, is listed
as 2:06 on the sleeve as the UK albums, but the track is listed on all the
record labels as the album version at 4:35, so R-0656 (see above) is not
present. This album was re-released by
what was now CBS Sugar in Italy in 1971 with the same sleeve. The record
still has orange labels, but now with no bottom text and "MADE IN ITALY BY
CBS SUGAR SpA" in the circumference text on the right. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side
1 - 62847 IL 23/7/71, Side 2 - SBPG 62847 BL, including the pressing date of 23
Jul 1971 on Side 1.
The Italian printer is now "Reparto Tipolitografico CBS-SUGAR" and the name
formerly at rear bottom right is printed at bottom centre below the CBS
copyright line. The record now has
orange/yellow labels with "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS SUGAR" at the
bottom. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 62847 IL/2 24 10 75,
Side 2 - 62847 2L/2
24 10 75 including the pressing date of 24 Oct 1975 on both sides.

"Greatest Hits" - stereo 8-track cartridge, CBS (catalogue number?) (Italy), 1970s:
"Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits" - stereo cassette releases, CBS 40 S 62847 (Italy), 1970s:
The most noticeable feature of this release is the unique track list - it has the UK sequence of tracks but It's All Over Now, Baby Blue has been excluded from Side 1 and One Of Us Must Know (Sooner Or Later) from Side 2, so this tape has ten tracks like the US release but not the US track list! Just Like A Woman is mistitled as "Just A Woman" on both sides of the insert and Side 2 of the cassette. The cassette is buff in colour with orange CBS paper labels.
Side 1: Blowin' In The Wind; It Ain't Me, Babe; The Times They Are A-Changin'; Mr. Tambourine Man; She Belongs To Me
Side 2: Subterranean Homesick Blues; Like A Rolling Stone; Just Like A Woman; Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35; I Want You
This means this Italian release has She Belongs To Me from the UK release but is missing Positively 4th Street from the US release!
The Italian fans were definitely cheated! As well as the two missing tracks, there are four edited tracks:
Mr. Tambourine Man – the last verse and chorus are missing (possibly R-0894)
Like A Rolling Stone - the last verse and chorus are missing (this sounds shorter than R-0895, so could be new R-2393)
Just Like A Woman – this fades out early losing the harmonica and drums (possibly R-0471)
Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 – the last verse is missing (this sounds longer than R-0051 or R-0893, so could be new R-2394)
I don’t have track times as they are not listed. More information will be added when available.
The insert of Paul Shenton's copy has a faded spine. This copy looks identical to Manuel's except that Manuel's cassette has "CBS" in a circle embossed in Side 1 of the cassette. This is missing on Paul's cassette.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Paul Shenton for information and pictures.
"Greatest Hits" - stereo cassette release, CBS (no catalogue number) (Italy), 1982:

"Greatest Hits" - stereo vinyl compilation LP, CBS S 62847 (Israel), 1967 (five variants/eight sub-variants):
Simon Blokker's copy (variant 4) has the same front sleeve and record as the other variants, but the Hebrew text is missing from the rear sleeve, which has no folded-over flaps. The record for variants 1-4 has orange CBS labels with "MADE IN ISRAEL" in English and Hebrew. Bob Johnston's name is again misspelled "Johnson" on Side 2. These four variants occur in several sub-variants as follows:
Variants 1A and 1B: three lines of bottom text in two blocks - 1A black, 1B red
Variant 2: two lines of bottom text, so far black only
Variants 3A, 3B and 3C: one line of bottom text - 3A black, 3B blue, 3C red
Variant 4: no bottom text
All seven variants have records with the same labels.

"Greatest Hits" - stereo cassette release, CBS 40 62847 (Israel), 1970s:
The cassette is black with white CBS paper labels. Both sides have the logo of "ACUM", the Israeli copyright organisation.
Thanks to Paul Shenton for information and pictures.
"Greatest Hits" - stereo vinyl compilation LP
releases, CBS SBPG 62847 (Kenya), 1968; CBS S 62847 (Kenya), 1970:
These incredibly rare albums come from the
former British colony which became independent in 1963, and are the only
Dylan releases from that country. Bob Johnston's name is misspelled as "Johnson"
on the rear sleeve and Side 2 record labels of both releases.
CBS SBPG 62847 (Kenya), 1968:
Arie de Reus has a copy with different record labels. The bottom text now reads "EMI RECORDS. MANUFACTURED UNDER LICENCE IN KENYA" instead of "EMI" in a box and just "MADE IN KENYA", and the centre CBS logo is much smaller. Otherwise details are the same including the publishing credits and "The Time They Are A-Changin'" mistake.
CBS S 62847 (Kenya), 1970:
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
"Greatest Hits" - stereo vinyl compilation LP, CBS S 62847 (NL), 1969 (three releases):
CBS S 62847 (NL)/CBS bpg 62847 (UK), 1969?:
This very strange copy from Paul Shenton comes in the 1969 stereo Dutch second release sleeve with a "B" in a circle next to the CBS logo at rear top right. However, it has unique CBS UK mono labels, see International Mono Releases - Dylan-Only Compilations 1960s. The labels are essentially the same as those of what is now the fourth CBS UK mono release, with the small "33⅓", but without the "MONO"/arrows logo, so could date from earlier in 1969. On this copy Rainy Day Women #12 and 35 on Side 2 definitely plays at 4:35. It's possible that the sleeve and record have been mismatched by a dealer or previous owner.
Lars M. Banke has a copy of the second release with a "B" in a circle next to the CBS logo at rear top right which plays the edited version of Rainy Day Woman #12 & 35 (R-0656, 2:06). The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 62847 A, Side 2 - 62847 B. Lars says "If you take a close look at the disc, you can actually see that the amount of grooves for the edited version is smaller than for the full version". His copy with the full version has the same catalogue numbers!
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Paul Shenton and Lars M. Banke for information and scans.
"Greatest Hits" - stereo vinyl compilation LP, CBS S 62847 (Spain for NL), 1973, re-released 1976:
There are two examples of the second album, the first was bought in the Saturn record store in Cologne, Germany, in 1976. This record has orange/yellow CBS labels, again with "MADE IN SPAIN". The second example was bought in Norway - the "LP 4" sticker shown is from a Norwegian record store.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Dag Braathen and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
"Greatest Hits" - stereo vinyl compilation LP, CBS 62847 (NL), 1976 (two variants), re-released 1985:
These releases have the same front sleeve as the 1969 release, the only difference being that the catalogue number is now just "62847" omitting the "S".
The rear sleeve has the same design as before, but the twelve album sleeves shown are different, ending with 1976's Desire. The big change from the 1969 release is that the album now includes the 2:06 edit of Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 (Hans Seegers says it actually plays at 1:55 with the first two verses only)! The sleeve was printed in Holland by Shorewood Packaging.
Simon Blokker has a different 1976 copy, probably an earlier release than that of Hans, with a printed "Y" in a circle below "62847", replaced by "CB|271" in a box for the two later releases. The record has the same labels as Hans' 1976 copy shown with matrix numbers: Side 1 - 62.847-A HZ, Side 2 - 62.847-B.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Simon Blokker for information and scans.
"Greatest Hits" - stereo vinyl compilation LP, CBS S 62847 (NL for France), 1976, re-released 1985:
André Wilbers has checked the playing times of the tracks on a copy of this album and found three are listed incorrectly on the record labels:
Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 listed on label as [2.58], actually [4:34] so not a rarity
Mr. Tambourine Man listed on label as [4.58], actually [5:25]
Like a Rolling Stone listed on label as [5.52], actually [6:09].
Thanks to Don DiMuccio and Hans Seegers for information and pictures.
"Greatest Hits" - stereo vinyl compilation LP releases, CBS 463088 1 (NL), 1989; Columbia 463088 1 (NL), 1990s:

"Greatest Hits" - stereo 8-track cartridge, CBS 42-62847 (NL), 1973:
CBS 42-62847 (NL) - front of tape cartridge, scan by Arie de Reus |
This 1973 Dutch release uses the UK track list. It has some unique rarities in that three tracks are split between programmes! It has a light grey tape cartridge with two printed labels. For full details, see 1967. Ronald Born has a CBS UK catalogue from 1974-75 that lists a UK 8-track stereo tape cartridge release, CBS 42-62847, with the same catalogue number. Scans required! Thanks to Arie de Reus for information and scans. |

"Greatest Hits" - stereo compact cassette release, CBS 40-62847 (NL), 1974, re-released twice later 1970s:
This 1974 cassette from Holland has the same track listing as above. All tracks are the regular album versions except the unique edit of Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 (R-0656, 2:06). Details are therefore also listed in 1967 with the other rarity entries for this album.
Thanks to Paul Shenton for pointing out that Like A Rolling Stone (the Highway 61 Revisited version) is on Side 1 and Mr. Tambourine Man is on Side 2 - compare this with the CBS UK cassette release above where Like A Rolling Stone on Side 2 is the live Self Portrait version from the Isle of Wight Festival, 1969.
The Dutch cassette shown is light grey plastic with black text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels. it is dated 1974. Paul Shenton's copy has the same cassette, but what looks like a later insert, which is sadly stained. This insert has different codes on the spine and rear of the outside, including the "LC|0149" code.
The outside of the insert of Simon Blokker's copy of the Dutch cassette 'Greatest Hits' (40-62847) has several differences compared to the fith and third versions shown (the cassette is the same), so must be an intermediate version:
|
The Greatest Hits cassette was re-released in Holland around 1989, still with the UK front, but with the US tracklist (see International Albums (Regular)! |
Thanks to Tom Willems, Paul Shenton, Manuel García Jara and Simon Blokker for information and scans.
"Greatest Hits" - stereo compact cassette release, Columbia 460907 4 (NL), 1991:
To make matters more complicated, the version with the UK twelve song tracklist was reissued in Holland in 1991 under the Columbia label. Like the 1989 release, the outside of the insert has a barcode. She Belongs To Me on Side 1 and Just Like A Woman on Side 2 are reversed. Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 is full length at 4:34, not the 2:06 edit. The running time for Side 1 of 19:49 listed on the inside of the insert and Side 1 of the cassette is incorrect, it misses out It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (4:15) and should therefore be 24:04. The running time for Side 2 of 23:46 on the inside of the insert and Side 2 of the cassette is correct. The cassette now has a transparent smoked grey case with white text, there are again no paper labels.
Thanks to Paul Shenton for information and pictures.
"Grandes Éxitos [Greatest Hits]" - stereo vinyl compilation LP, CBS S 62847 (Spain), 1970, re-released 1973 (twice), 1975, 1978, 1981 (three times), mid-1980s, late 1980s:
CBS S 62847 (Spain), 1970:
The record labels have "Cara A" and "Cara B" to the left of the centre hole.
CBS S 62847 (Spain), 1973 (twice):

1973 release, bottom text on one line)
Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for pointing out that the record labels now have "Cara 1" and "Cara 2" to the left of the centre hole, instead of "Cara A" and "Cara B".

1973 release, bottom text on two lines)
CBS S 62847 (Spain), 1975:

Calle Princesa address)
The 1975 rear sleeve shows eight albums by contemporary CBS artists instead of ten, different artists from the second 1973 rear sleeve. The record now has orange/yellow CBS labels and was again made for Discos CBS S.A. Madrid, with the previous address of Calle Princesa 1, Madrid-13. The album title is again missing from the record labels. The rear sleeve is dated 1975, with the printer information again printed vertically downwards.

release both variants - Avenida del
Generalísimo
address)
Lars M. Banke has a copy in the same sleeve with the same eight artists illustrated on the rear, but with different record labels as shown. The record of Lars' copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 62847 A 4, Side 2 - 62847 B 0.
CBS S 62847 (Spain), 1978 (two sleeve and two label variants):
CBS S 62847 (Spain) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (first 1978 variant)
CBS S 62847 (Spain) - detail of rear, scan by Tom Willems (second 1978 variant)
Both 1978 records again have orange/yellow CBS labels, but with a different label design. The record of the first variant copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1- 62847 A+, Side 2 - 62847 B0. The album title is still missing from the record labels. The second 1978 variant is very rare and very expensive to obtain. Manuel García Jara's copy has the same sleeve as the first 1978 variant, but the labels differ in that the box round "SGAE" to the right of the centre hole is missing! The record of the second variant copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1- 62847 A0, Side 2 - 62847 B0. On both Side 2s Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 is listed as 2:06 but it is actually the full album version. Tom Willems has a copy in the second sleeve where the record has the same labels as Manuel's copy, without the box round "SGAE".

CBS S 62847 (Spain) - detail of rear, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (late 1980
release)
CBS S 62847 (Spain), 1981 (three releases):
The first 1981 record again has orange/yellow CBS labels, this time with a design similar to the 1975 design. The album title is still missing from the record labels. The song titles are in Spanish and English, and listed continuously.
The Historia De La Música Rock [History Of Rock Music] album released with Issue 31, Orbis Publications, listed below was released in Spring 1981 and was the second release of this album in Spain in 1981.
The third 1981 release has the same sleeve as the first 1981 release. The record labels are again orange/yellow, with a completely different text layout and song titles in Spanish only. The song titles are now one per line, aligned both left and right (this is the same layout used for the record labels of the Historia De La Música Rock release below). The matrix numbers of Lars M. Banke's copy shown are: Side 1 - 62047-A0, Side 2 - 62047-10 (the letters after the hyphen are very hard to read).

CBS/El Círculo de Lectores 44461/1-2 (Spain) -
spine of cassette box,
scan by Manuel García Jara
There are two different insert designs: two copies are shown, one where the the card of Greatest Hits has multiple background CBS logos on the left, not present on the Empire Burlesque insert; and one where both inserts are the same, with no background CBS logos on the left. There must be copies available where the cassette of Empire Burlesque also has the multiple background CBS logos on the left of the insert!
*The distinction between “myth” and “legend” made in English isn’t made in other European languages – they’re both types of traditional stories, but basically a “myth” is a story that was never actually true, whereas a “legend” is a story that is based on true events or people. This means an “urban legend” should actually be called an “urban myth”, while Bob’s certainly a legend and definitely not a myth!
CBS S 62847 (Spain), 1987:
For the first time, these labels have the same text as the Empire Burlesque labels: "CBS PRODUCTOS ESPECIALES [CBS SPECIAL PRODUCTS]" below the tracklists on sides 1 and 2 (this logo, "Columbia Special Products", was used in various artists compilations from the 1960s, e.g. records made by Columbia in the USA for Philco, Zenith, Westinghouse...) The tracklist text also is different, centred and continuous instead of being left and right aligned. Most importantly, this album has the title "GREATEST HITS": only the first Spanish edition of 1970, made by Fonogram, had the title "Grandes Éxitos" but this title is missing from the labels of all the subsequent editions. The copy of the record shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 62847-A0, Side 2 - 62847-B0.
*See the comments about myths and legends above.
CBS S 62847 (Spain), 1988:
The records of both copies shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - 62847 - A0, Side 2 - 62847 - B0.
The album with this front sleeve released on CD in Spain in 1989 had the ten-track US tracklist, see below.

"Grandes Exitos [Greatest Hits]" - stereo compact cassette releases, CBS 40-62847 (Spain), 1970; re-released 1974 (twice):
The 1970 cassette release is very rare and was made in Spain by BIAS S.A., Barcelona. The cassette does not have Dolby noise reduction. The song titles on the cassette labels are in upper case. The cassette sides are listed as "A" and "B".
The first 1974 cassette release was made in Spain by Discos CBS S.A., Madrid. The cassette now has Dolby noise reduction. The text layout on the cassette labels is quite different, although the song titles on the cassette labels are still in upper case and the cassette sides are again listed as "A" and "B".
The second 1974 cassette release was again made in Spain by Discos CBS S.A., Madrid. The cassette insert now has the Spanish text "Antes de dar la vuelta a la cinta, déjela pasar hasta el final [Before you turn over the tape, let it play until the end]". The cassette again has Dolby noise reduction. The song titles on the cassette labels are now in upper/lower case. The cassette sides are now listed as "1" and "2".

It is actually the 1967 UK twelve-track release of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits including the 2:06 edit of Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, first released in Spain as CBS S 62847 in 1970 (see above). The album has no title on the front or rear sleeve or the record labels, but has the title Grandes Exitos [Greatest Hits] on the spine only. The record labels are the same style as the second 1981 release above, with song titles in Spanish only. There are three rear sleeve variants.
The cassette insert has the title BOB DYLAN only. The inside of the insert is blank apart from the text shown. The cassette is white with orange printed text, there are no paper labels. This album is also listed in International Album Releases (Dylan-Only Compilations) 1980s for completeness, with more pictures of the 1980s magazine series.
Side 1: Blowin' In The Wind; It Ain't Me, Babe; The Times They Are A-Changin'; Mr. Tambourine Man; She Belongs To Me; It's All Over Now, Baby Blue.
Side 2: Subterranean Homesick Blues; One Of Us Must Know (Sooner Or Later); Like A Rolling Stone; Just Like A Woman; Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 (R-0656); I Want You.
Both the album and the cassette were made in Spain by Discos CBS S.A., Paseo de la Castellana 93, Madrid-16, their new address after Nov 1980. The album sleeve and cassette insert were printed by Indugraf S.A., Madrid.

CBS 62847 (Greece), mid-1980s re-release:
This album has the same sleeve as the 1978 release, including the same rear sleeve bottom text, but the record now has red CBS labels, still with the same catalogue number and the same text layout as the 1978 labels. The white text on the labels is significantly crisper than the black text. The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 62.847 – A (handwritten), Side 2 - 01-62847-1B-1 (stamped) plus HP-GRIEKENLAND (also stamped). The insert is the same as for the Dutch 1974 cassette release above, so mid-1970s is a likely date. The cassette is light grey with black text, there are no paper labels. The Side 1 text reads "All copyrights reserved on this tape. Copying and live performances of this tape without prior permission of the owners is forbidden." The text under "A" and "B" means "Side". On Side 2 Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 is mistitled "RAINY DAY WOMAN...".

"Greatest Hits" - digitally remastered 30th Anniversary CD re-releases, Columbia 460907 9 (UK)/ CBS/Sony 460907 9 (Spain), 1997:
Columbia 460907 9 (UK):
Thanks to Gino Galvez for pointing out this remastered edition no longer contains R-0251, the version of Blowin' In The Wind with the first guitar note missing. I've confirmed this by comparing my copy of 460907 9 with the version on the remastered release of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. The CD release also no longer contains R-0656, here Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 is the full album version at 4:37. It still contains One Of Us Must Know (Sooner Or Later), an unfaded original stereo mix (thanks to Roger Ford for confirming that this CD is the only place this specific version can be found today - Roger says it is actually very slightly faded out after Paul Griffin's last piano chord, but the regular stereo mix fades out long before this, and the 2003 SACD mix cuts out Griffin's closing piano chords completely). The front insert restores the tracklist and the rear insert has the US rear design.
There are four variants of this release. The 1997 release (my copy) has no catalogue number on the upper right of the rear insert, the gold/black sticker on the front of the clear jewel case, and bar-code "5 99746 09791". Keith Schweiger has two copies, also with no catalogue number at top right of the rear insert and the same bar-code. One has "Sony Music" at the bottom left of the rear insert, the other doesn't have "Sony Music" but has the catalogue number above the bar code on the right. Keith's first copy has the same front sticker as mine, the second copy has two front stickers, one with "Nice Price" and the other advertising the 30th Anniversary of the album, 1967-1997. The 1997 releases have an extended booklet with the Columbia "Nice Price" catalogue. The 2000 re-release has the catalogue number on the upper right of the rear insert (not shown), no front stickers, and bar-code "5 99746 308896". All the discs are the same except for different matrix numbers.
CBS/Sony 460907 9 (Spain):
Dag Braathen has bought a Spanish release, CBS/Sony 460907 6, in Germany with German text "Alles was du brauchst [Everything you need]" on the shrink wrap. This album has the CBS Spain address of Paseo de la Castellana 93, 28046 Madrid on the rear insert.
This album was also released with the same catalogue number in a Best Of The Best Gold edition in 1998, see below.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Bill Hester for information and to Keith Schweiger and Dag Braathen for further information and scans.

"Greatest Hits" - CD in digipak with newspaper, Nova Music/Sony Music NM 408-2/4609072 (Romania), 27 May 2010:
This unique 2010 collector's edition of the 1967 UK compilation comes as a picture CD in a two-panel digipak with a Dylan newspaper, a special edition of the Romanian newspaper "Jurnalul National". It was released by Nova Music Entertainment in association with Sony Music. There's an anachronistic photo from 2001's "Love And Theft" on the inside of the digipak! The newspaper and album were released to mark Bob playing at Bucharest, Romania, on 2 Jun 2010.
Thanks to Arie de Reus for information and scans. Arie bought this from a stall at the Linz, Austria, show on 12 Jun 2010.
