Ger Hemel has what purports to be a promo Dutch copy of CBS 651148 7 with a unique sleeve and a promo stamp on the A-side, the B-side is as shown. However, after discussing this with Arie de Reus and Tom Willems I am convinced the sleeve and promo stamp are not genuine. Arie said they would have used a regular sleeve for promos. Tom said the “CBS” typeface on the sleeve is wrong, as is the Epic logo, and the combination of “SPECIAL LIMITED EDITION” and “FOR PROMOTION ONLY” is incompatible. He also thinks that the promo stamp on the A-side is suspicious. This copy also comes with a single-sided insert with the same design as the rear sleeve.

The Precision Lacquer acetate is double-sided and dated "08/07/87". The Precision Lacquer copper master is single-sided and of Side 2 only, dated "11/16/87". Shenandoah is misspelled "Shannondoah" on all three masters. The PCM 1630 cartridge is dated "11/17/87". PCM 1630 was a high-quality professional digital audio tape format that used ¾" tape in a videotape cassette - it was superseded in the 1990s by DAT, which uses a much smaller tape cartridge. For the second version, see below. I previously had this listed as the second release, but the dates on this (16 and 17 Nov 1987) and the other master below (3 Dec 1987) now show the correct sequence. R-0195 Let's Stick Together (Wilbert Harrison) - slightly longer fade out (3:10 - released track is 3:08) R-0196 Got Love If You Want It (James Moore - "Slim Harpo") - this was replaced by Death Is Not The End on the final release R-0194 Important Words (Gene Vincent/Bill Davis) - this was replaced by The Usual from the Hearts of Fire film soundtrack (see above) on the second version of the album, and was itself replaced by the new version of Had A Dream About You, Baby on the final release in May 1988 - see International Albums (Regular). The track listing of the first promo release was: The first promo cassette of this album also had this tracklisting - scans required.!" The rumour at the time was that Down In The Groove was intended by Bob to be a double album but was cut down to a single album by Columbia. Certainly promos were released with these two alternative track listings before the final track list was decided and the album was eventually released in Jun 1988. Got Love If You Want It, Important Words and The Usual (see below) were replaced, and there are several unreleased covers from the sessions in circulation which may have been planned for inclusion on a two disc set. However, I have yet to see any physical evidence of anything other than a single album, so any "culling" must have been done before masters were created. Thanks to Arie de Reus for the scans of the acetate, and to Keith Venturoni and Larry Crum for finding the latter two items on eBay. |

"Down In The Groove" (second promo release) - Precision Lacquer/Columbia CK 40975-2 (USA), 3 Dec 1987 (copper master)/14 Dec 1987 (test pressing)/Feb 1988 (promo cassette):
R-0195-2 Let's Stick Together (Wilbert Harrison) - slightly longer fade out, as the first version of the album
R-0196-2 Got Love If You Want It (James Moore - "Slim Harpo") - as the first version of the album
R-0191-3 The Usual (John Hiatt)
- from the album Hearts Of Fire: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (see above), this replaced
Important Words from the first promo version (also see above)
Also appeared on singles (see above) and the 1993 Japanese promo CD Mr. D's
Collection # 3 (see
1993)
The second promo release track listing (bold is new) was:
Side 1 - Let's Stick Together (longer fade-out); When Did You Leave Heaven?;
Got Love If You Want It; Ninety Miles An Hour; Sally Sue Brown.
Side 2 - Ugliest Girl In The World; Silvio; The Usual;
Shenandoah; Rank Strangers.
For mispressed Argentinean LP and cassette releases that have the same tracklist as this, see 1988.
Also shown is a test pressing from the CBS Records pressing plant in Carrollton, GA, dated "12-14-87". As can be seen it has generic labels from Carrollton that have not been written on, but there is a typed label on the plain white sleeve with details of the album and matrix numbers: Side 1: PAL-40957-1A, Side 2 - PBL-40957-3A. The final US release of the album was Columbia OC 40957. The handwriting on the label may not be contemporary. Thanks to Jeff Gold for scans of this pressing. There's no tracklist, but Jeff confirms it has the rarities above. For a test pressing of Oh Mercy from the CBS Records pressing plant in Carrollton, GA, see International Album Releases (Regular). Thanks to Arie de Reus for scans of a second release promo cassette from CBS Studios, New York. The cassette has a clear case with white labels. Shenandoah is misspelled "Sehnandoah".
Larry Crum has a copy from Australia of another second release promo cassette. There are no markings on the cassette itself, and the insert has a generic CBS insert with typed text. ("01-636-3434" is a London, England, telephone number in the then-used format, so I assume the origin of the cassette is the UK). Thanks to Arie de Reus for the scan. David Plentus has a cassette copy which is from the UK and is virtually identical (the words "NEW L.P." and "Dec '87" are missing).
The final track listing of Down In The Groove (blue is new) in May 1988 was:
Side 1 - Let's Stick Together (faded); When Did You Leave Heaven?; Sally Sue Brown;
Death
Is Not The End (1984 out-take from Infidels!);
Had A Dream About You, Baby
(remix of Hearts Of Fire track R-0193).
Side 2 - Ugliest Girl In The World; Silvio; Ninety Miles An Hour (Down A Dead
End Street); Shenandoah;
Rank Strangers.
