This is part of a separate multi-year list by release date of international (now including the USA, which was once listed separately) promo and commercially-released stereo 7" and 12" singles, EPs and CD singles that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know many are not included on any other Internet site. Special thanks to Hans Seegers for many of these items! Stereo promo versions of commercially released singles and singles released exclusively for promotional purposes that were formerly listed in the Promotional Items sections of the yearly pages are now listed here.
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

"Bob Dylan Greatest Hits" - 5-track 3" mini-CD single, ARC B-5 (Japan), 1990s(?):
"Political World" - 7" vinyl singles, CBS 655643 7 (UK/NL), 29 Jan 1990; CBS 655643 7 (Australia), 16 Mar 1990; 12" vinyl single, CBS 655643 6 (UK), 29 Jan 1990:

CBS 655643 7 (UK) - 7" single, front scan by Patrick Helfrich (promo copy with sticker showing release date as 29 Jan 1990) |
All tracks are the regular album versions. For the CD single with these tracks, see below. For a 1989 Spanish promo single with this A-side, see International Singles 1987-89. The UK 7" and 12" singles have the same picture sleeve, the title track plus Ring Them Bells from Oh Mercy. The UK 12" single also has Silvio from Down In The Groove and All Along The Watchtower live from Dylan & The Dead. |

CBS 655643 7 (UK) - 7" single, detail of A-side scan by Patrick Helfrich |
CBS 655643 7 (UK) - 7" single, B-side scan by Patrick Helfrich |
Both UK singles and the Dutch 7" single below had red CBS record labels.
CBS 655643 7 (NL), 29 Jan 1990:
The Dutch 7" single has a completely different front and rear sleeve and record label design.
CBS 655643 7 (Australia):
CBS 655643 7 (Australia) - 7" single with date stamp, A-side scan by François Guillez |
Thanks to Hans Seegers for information that the Australian 7" single came in both promo and commercial generic sleeves, see 7" Single Sleeves. It had orange/yellow CBS record labels with a barcode on both sides. François Guillez has a promo copy in a commercial sleeve with a stamped date of 16 Mar 1990 on the A-side. The B-side is the same as Stuart's copy. |
|
CBS 655643 7 (Australia) - 7" single, B-side scan by Stuart Moore |
"Political World" - 5" CD single, CBS 655643 2 (UK/NL), Jan 1990:
CBS 655643 2 (UK) - front of card sleeve, scan by Hans Seegers |
This single in a card sleeve contained the title track and Ring Them Bells from Oh Mercy, Silvio from Down In The Groove and All Along The Watchtower (live) from Dylan And The Dead. It was made in England by PDO, but also released in Holland. "PDO" was Philips & Dupont Optical who had a CD pressing plant in Blackburn, Lancashire. PDO manufactured mostly budget and classical CDs for a large number of record companies including Ace Records, Decca and Deutsche Grammophon. This copy does not seem to have the "bronzing" discolouration of my 1990 Unbelievable UK CD single, see below. For the 1989 CBS UK CD single of Everything Is Broken, also made by PDO, see International Singles: Singles & EPs 1987-89. For a picture CD single with different tracks, see below. |
CBS 655643 2 (UK) - rear of card sleeve, scan by Hans Seegers |
CBS 655643 2 (UK) - CD scan by Hans Seegers |
Thanks to Alan Hoaksey for the initial information and to Hans Seegers for further information and scans.
"Political World" - 3" CD single, CBS 655643 3 (Austria for UK and NL), Jan 1990:
This 3" CD single in a folded card sleeve inside a plastic wallet used the Dutch 7" single front photo and contained the title track plus Ring Them Bells from Oh Mercy, Silvio from Down In The Groove and All Along The Watchtower (live) from Dylan And The Dead. It was manufactured in Austria, as stated on the CD, for release in the UK and Holland. Full marks to Gerd Rundel for spotting a tiny difference between his and Jack's copy. On Jack's copy the final "4" of the barcode on the rear sleeve is reduced in size, on Gerd's copy it is full size.
Thanks to Jack from Canada and Gerd Rundel for information and scans.
"Political World" - picture 5" CD single, CBS 655643 5 (UK), Jan 1990:
This CD single is unusual in that it has a different front design and tracklist from the other UK singles while still using the "655643" catalogue number:
The front insert of Christopher Dunn's copy is omitted so the picture CD, which has a crop of the Oh Mercy front picture, is on view in the jewel case. Gerd Rundel's copy has a folded front insert, blank on the inside. The reverse of the front insert has this alternate track list with a noticeable mistake - It's All Over Now, Baby Blue is misprinted as "It's All Over Now, Bany Blue". Dag Braathen says the photo dates from Sep 1997, so cannot be contemporaneous. This and the spelling mistake lead me to think that this front insert may not be official. The picture CD and rear insert of Gerd Rundel's copy are the same as Christopher Dunn's.
For other UK CD and vinyl singles with the "655643" catalogue number with Ring Them Bells, Silvio and a live version of All Along The Watchtower, see above.
Thanks to Alex from Brazil for pointing out this eBay item to me, to Christopher Dunn and Gerd Rundel for scans and to Donald Mitchell and Dag Braathen for correcting mistakes.
"Most Of The Time" - promo CD single, Columbia CSK 73326 (USA), Apr 1990:
CSK 73326 (USA) - front scan by David Plentus |
Because this promo CD contains a rarity, full details are in

"Unbelievable" - promo CD single, Columbia CSK 2138 (USA), Sep 1990:
"Unbelievable" - promo 7" vinyl single, CBS ARIC 2536 (Spain), Sep 1990:
"Unbelievable"/"10,000 Men" - 7" vinyl singles, CBS 656304 7 (UK/NL/Australia), 17 Sep 1990:
The Dutch single has a slightly different picture sleeve (crop of the Under The Red Sky album photo, same as the 3" CD singles below), and has the song title handwritten. Thanks to Tom Willems for a "CBS-Blitzinformation" promo letter sent out with the Dutch single from Holland to German addresses and for scans of a promo copy of the UK single with a date sticker and promo letter. Ronald Born has a copy of the Dutch Unbelievable single with stickers on the labels from B.R.F., a radio station in Eupen, Belgium. The stickers are dated "09/10/90" (9 Oct 1990). Ronald doubts this copy was ever played.
The Australian 7" release, also CBS 656304 7, came in both promo and commercial generic sleeves, see 7" Single Sleeves. It still has orange/yellow CBS labels, but with barcodes.
For a 1990 Unbelievable single-track US promo CD single, see above. For commercial Unbelievable CD singles, see below.
Thanks to Alan Hoaksey for initial
information. Thanks to Hans Seegers, Tom Willems and Ronald Born for
further information and scans.
"Unbelievable"/"10,000 Men" - 12" vinyl single, CBS 656304 6 (NL for Europe), 17 Sep 1990:
"Unbelievable" - 5" CD singles: CBS 656304 2 (UK)/CBS 656304 9 (Australia), 17 Sep 1990; 3" CD singles: CBS 656304 1/CBS 656304 3 (mainland Europe), Sep 1990:
CBS 656304 2 - 5" CD single (UK):
The UK 4-track 5" CD single comes in a standard jewel case with the title track and 10,000 Men from Under The Red Sky; In The Summertime (from Shot Of Love) and Jokerman (from Infidels), all regular album versions. (The front insert picture has "BOB DYLAN" in white on a black bar.) Thanks to Jim Siddy for pointing out the CD was not made in Austria, but in the UK by PDO, as was the Jan 1990 Political World UK CD single. Back in 1990 my scanner would not scan silver discs, showing them as black, but my current scanner has no difficulty. My copy of the CD is now discoloured by an effect called "bronzing", which occurs mainly in discs made by PDO in Blackburn, Lancashire, between 1988 and 1993 because of a fault in their manufacturing process. Other PDO plants worldwide were not affected. Bronzing can make the disc unplayable but my copy still plays OK (this is just as well because PDO, now called EDC, Entertainment Distribution Company, stopped replacing these defective CDs in 2006). My 1991 Dylan Originals UK promo CD single also has this bronzing, see below.
CBS 656304 1 - 3" CD single (Europe)/CBS 656304 3 - 3"
CD single (Europe):
These singles are in small card sleeves inside a clear plastic wallet, and have the same front design as the Dutch 7" single CBS 656304 7 above.
CBS 656304-9 - 5" CD single (Australia):
For a US Unbelievable promo CD single and Dutch Unbelievable 7" and 12" singles, see above.

Plentus and Jim Siddy for information and to Hans Seegers Manfred Endtner and
Gerd Rundel for further information and scans

This is the only CD single released after 1990 that hasn't contained rare tracks! (The replaced version of Changing Of The Guards can still be found on CD on 1994's Greatest Hits Vol. 3, so it's not a rarity.)
