This is part of a separate multi-year list by release date of international (now including the USA, which was once listed separately) promo and commercially-released stereo 7" and 12" singles that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know many are not included on any other Internet site. Special thanks to Hans Seegers for many of these items! Stereo promo versions of commercially released singles that were formerly listed in the Promotional Items sections of the yearly pages are now listed here. I would also like to include cassette singles here, but I don't have any, and none have been notified to me so far.
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

1987
"4 Play Bob Dylan" - 7" stereo EP, Columbia 4TS-22018 (Canada), 1987:
This four-track "Greatest Hits" stereo 7" EP plays at 33⅓ r.p.m. and includes Like A Rolling Stone from Highway 61 Revisited, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 from Blonde On Blonde, Lay, Lady, Lay from Nashville Skyline and Knockin' On Heaven's Door from Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid. All four tracks are the full album versions.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans. Manuel has other EPs in this "4 Play" series from both Canada and Australia, and thinks there may be an Australian version of this Dylan EP, although Hans Seegers thinks not.
"4 Play Bob Dylan" - 7" stereo cassette EP, Columbia 4TST-22018 (Canada), 1987:
This is the cassette equivalent of the above EP.
Thanks to Dag Braathen for information and scans.
"Knockin' On Heaven's Door '73-'78" - 7" promo stereo EP, CBS PRO 415 (NL), Sep 1987:
For other 7" singles containing this song see 1973, US & International 7" Singles & EPs 1973 and US & International 7" and 12" Singles & EPs 1979. Note previous single releases had the 1960s-early 1970s orange CBS labels, and the late 1970s-early 1980s red/yellow labels. This EP has the later red label with white CBS logo.
Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.
"The Usual"/"Got My Mind Made Up" - 7" and 12" promo and commercial singles, CBS 651148 7 (7"), CBS 651148 6 (12") (UK/NL/Spain/Portugal), 5 Oct 1987:
For full details of these singles, the A-side of which was a rarity from the Hearts Of Fire soundtrack album, see 1987.
Thanks to Arie de Reus, Hans Seegers, Francisco Lima and Anthony Craig for information and scans.
"Silvio" - 12" copper single master, Precision Lacquer/CBS Records (USA), 11 Dec 1987:
1988
"Silvio" - promo 12" stereo single, Columbia CAS 02903 (USA), May 1988:
"Silvio" - promo 7" single, Discos CBS PR-653204 (Mexico), May 1988:
CBS PR-653204 (Mexico) - label scan (my copy, same both sides) |
This rare white label promo single plays the album track from Down In The Groove
on both sides. It comes in a generic plastic CBS sleeve, see 7" Single Sleeves. |
"Silvio" - promo 7" stereo single, Columbia 38-07970 (USA), Jun 1988:
"Silvio"/"Driftin' Too Far From Shore" - 7" stereo singles, Columbia 38-07970 (USA/Canada), Jun 1988:
Columbia 38-07970 (USA) - A-side scan by Hans Seegers |
Both tracks are the album versions, the A-side from Down In The
Groove and the B-side from Knocked Out Loaded. For a 1988 US promo single with Silvio on both sides, see
above. Note that on the second variant of the US B-side the length is shown
incorrectly as 3:10 - the first variant is correct at 3:38. This mistake was
repeated on the Canadian single, the UK promo single below, and
several other worldwide releases. This single is again noteworthy because it was the last vinyl "current" commercial Bob Dylan single to be released in the USA. Apart from re-releases in the 1990s of the Columbia Hall Of Fame singles featuring songs from the 1960s and early 1970s, all other singles (vinyl or CD) released in the USA have been promo only. They were produced for the music industry only, or available to the public only as part of promotions for Dylan albums. For 1988 US and UK promos of this single, see above. For international stereo releases of this single, see below. |

Columbia 38-07970 (Canada) - A-side in CBS sleeve, scan by Manuel García Jara |
The equivalent Canadian single came in a generic CBS sleeve. The record had orange/yellow Columbia labels with "MANUFACTURED BY CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD." in the bottom text line.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
"Silvio" - 10" and 12" single acetates, CBS no number (USA/UK), Jul 1988:
A-side: Silvio from Down In The Groove
B-side: Driftin' Too Far From Shore from Knocked Out Loaded, When Did You Leave Heaven? from Down In The Groove (12" single only)
The 10" acetate for the 7" single has stock labels from the US company Precision Lacquer, with "CBS Records" and other information typewritten. The date is shown as "06/07/88" (6 Jul 1988). The length of Driftin' Too Far From Shore is given correctly as 3:38. The 12" acetate has stock labels from CBS's London Mastering Studios, with handwritten titles, and came in a plain black sleeve with the CBS London recording studios address (shown below). The length of Driftin' Too Far From Shore is given incorrectly as 3:10. For the UK 7" and 12" commercial singles, CBS 651406-7 and CBS 651406-6, see below. For a 1988 USA 12" promo single with Silvio alone, see above.
Thanks to Arie de Reus for information and scans of the 10" acetate and to Hans Seegers for information and scans of the 12" acetate.
"Silvio" - 7" single release: CBS 651406-7 (UK); 12" single release: CBS 651406-6 (UK), Jul 1988:
CBS 651406-7 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by
Kenneth Robson (7" single)
CBS 651406-6 (UK) - detail of rear (12" single)
All tracks are regular album versions. The sleeves and records of these singles were made in England.
A-side: Silvio from Down In The Groove
B-side: When Did You Leave Heaven? from Down In The Groove (7" and 12"); Driftin' Too Far From Shore from Knocked Out Loaded (12" only)
For acetates of these singles, see above.
Thanks to Wim van der Mark for initial information, and to Kenneth Robson and Patrick Helfrich for scans.
"Silvio"/"When Did You Leave Heaven?" - 7" single release, CBS 651406 7 (NL), Jul 1988:
CBS 651406 7 (NL) - detail of rear, scan by
Sergio Mariano Romay (7" single)
Ger Hemel has what purports to be a promo Dutch copy of CBS 651406 7 with a unique sleeve and a promo stamp on the A-side, the B-side is as shown. The sleeve actually is a folded sheet inside a clear plastic sleeve. However, after discussing this with Arie de Reus and Tom Willems I am convinced the sleeve and promo stamp are not genuine. Arie said they would have used a regular sleeve for promos. Tom said the “CBS” typeface on the sleeve is wrong, as is the Epic logo, and the combination of “SPECIAL LIMITED EDITION” and “FOR PROMOTION ONLY” is incompatible. He also thinks that the promo stamp on the A-side is suspicious.
Thanks to Patrick Helfrich, Sergio Mariano Romay and Ger Hemel for information and scans.
"Silvio"/"When Did You Leave Heaven?" - promo and commercial 7" singles, Discos CBS 651406 7 (Spain), Jul 1988:
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Michel Pomarede for information and scans.
"Silvio"/"Driftin' Too Far From Shore" - 7" single, CBS 652845 (Australia), Jul 1988:
CBS 652845 (Australia) - A-side scan by Hans Seegers |
This single came in both promo and commercial
generic sleeves, see
7"
Single Sleeves. On the B-side the length is shown
incorrectly as 3:10, it's actually 3:38. This mistake was also on the US
single (see above), the UK 12" acetate (see above), and
several other worldwide releases. There is no album credit for the B-side. Thanks to Hans Seegers and Ronald Born for information and scans. |

"Most Of The Time"/"Shooting Star"/Series Of Dreams" - 12" acetates, CBS (no catalogue numbers) (UK), 1989:
These three discs belonged to a departed US collector who had in the past contributed to my web-site. Before his death he sold off most of his collection through Heritage Auctions, Dallas, TX, but there were some that Heritage wouldn't sell because they didn't think they were authentic. His son is now selling these on eBay and these are three of them. I have no doubt that the original owner bought them in good faith and believed them to be genuine. The seller claims they come from aborted first recording sessions for Oh Mercy in the UK with Ronnie Wood, but I haven't found any evidence such sessions ever took place.
"Everything Is Broken" - test pressings, CBS (no catalogue number) (France), Oct 1989:
First variant - label scan from eBay |
These are single-sided records with silver-grey labels in plain white sleeves. Thanks to Raoul Verolleman for finding the first variant on eBay France and to Hans Seegers and Dag Braathen for the other variants and for extra details. The single shown on the left is an unusual item for CBS France in that "TEST PRESSING" is in English. For commercial singles which included a rare live performance of Dead Man, Dead Man, see 1989. |
Second variant - label scan by Hans Seegers |
Third variant - label scan by Dag Braathen |
"Everything Is Broken"/"Death Is Not The End" - 7" promo and commercial singles, CBS 655358 7 (UK/NL/Australia), 23 Oct 1989:
The German promotional letter (right) is dated "16.9.89", over a month before the single was actually released. It's interesting in that it translates the A-side title as "Alles Kaputt" and wrongly gives the Daniel Lanois studio location for the Oh Mercy recordings as Memphis, TN (it was actually recorded in New Orleans, LA).
The Australian single shown above right came in promotional and commercial versions in standard CBS sleeves, see 7" Single Sleeves.
CBS 655358 6 (UK) - 12" single front (my copy) |
For CD and 12" singles with a rarity, see 1989. For 1989 promo singles with the title track alone alone, see above. |

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

It comes in a green cassette case and has black CBS paper labels with silver text, there are no paper labels. There is a short insert wi5th minimal information.
Thanks to Stuart Moore for scans.

Columbia 38-73062 (Canada) - A-side scan by Sam C. Visser |
This 7" promo single has the same track on both sides. The labels are
different, with text "SIDE 1" and "SIDE 2" even though the track is the same. For the special 1989 Canadian sleeve that housed this record, see 7" Single Sleeves. Thanks to Sam C. Visser for information and scans. |

Because the live version of Dead Man, Dead Man is a rarity, full details are
in 1989. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. |
