This is part of a list by release date of international (now including the USA, which was once listed separately) promo and commercially-released stereo 7" and 12" singles and EPs for 1978 that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know many are not included on any other Internet site. Special thanks to Hans Seegers for many of these items! Stereo promo versions of commercially released singles that were formerly listed in the Promotional Items sections of the yearly pages are now listed here. Singles released in this time period exclusively for promotional purposes are now here also. I would also like to include cassette singles here, but I don't have any, and none have been notified to me so far.

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Bob Dylan and The Rolling Thunder Revue - "4 Songs From "Renaldo And Clara" " - promo 12" EP releases, Columbia AS 422 (USA), Jan 1978:

Columbia AS 422 (USA) - front sleeve is plain buff with the sticker only (my first copy)

Columbia AS 422 (USA) - rear sleeve with gold promo stamp only (my first copy)

Columbia AS 422 (USA) - front sleeve with "AP-1", the sticker and the black "Demonstration" stamp only (my second copy)

Columbia AS 422 (USA), Side 2 with Isis and R-0137 (both my copies)

Renaldo And Clara (see VHS & DVD 1970s) lasted for over four hours, and was very badly received by critics. It had only a very short cinema release, even in a badly chopped-down two hour version. The full film was shown on TV in Europe a couple of times in the 1980s. It has never been commercially released for home viewing, which is a shame because it contains around 45 minutes of superlative concert footage. For informed discussion of this and Bob's other screen appearances, see C.P. Lee's well-received book "Like A Bullet Of Light ". This promo-only four track 12" EP contains an otherwise unavailable performance from the rehearsals before the film and three from the live shows. It has a plain buff card sleeve with a front sticker and either a black or a gold promo stamp. The record has white promo Columbia labels. For full details, see 1978.

People Get Ready (Curtis Mayfield) - rehearsals, Studio Instrumental Rentals, New York, October 1975, also released on the 1993 Japanese promo CD Mr. D's Collection # 3, see 1993.

It Ain't Me Babe - live, Harvard Square Theatre, Cambridge, MA, 20 Nov 1975, also released on the Japanese promo CD Mr. D's Collection # 3, 1993, and European Unplugged Dignity CD singles 1995, and now also available on the 2001 Japanese live compilation Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances, see 2001. The version of this performance released in Nov 2002 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue, is a remix.

Never Let Me Go (Joseph Wade Scott) - duet with Joan Baez, live with the Rolling Thunder Revue, The Forum, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975, also released on the 1993 Japanese promo CD Mr. D's Collection # 3, see 1993.The omission of this song from The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue (see International Album Releases (Regular) ) is inexplicable!

The fourth song on this EP was Isis, also live with the Rolling Thunder Revue, The Forum, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975. No longer a rarity, this was later released as the B-side of the 1984 Dutch Jokerman single (see 1984), and on Biograph (see 1985). The version on the bonus DVD with the Limited Edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue is an otherwise unavailable remix of this (see 2002).

Clinton Heylin's "Bootleg" book says that my second copy of the 12" EP, like most circulating, is a counterfeit because the "DEMONSTRATION/Not For Sale" stamp is black whereas the printing on the genuine item (such as my first copy) is in gold - however this story is disputed by Bob Paxon, who has had record industry connections, and says both are genuine. Arie de Reus says the copies with black stamps were produced at Columbia's Pitman, NJ, processing plant, and are indeed genuine.

This is the only 7" single from The Last Waltz with Bob Dylan released anywhere worldwide. It was in a limited edition of 100, the copy shown is #37. As the B-side is a Dylan rarity, full details are in 1978.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

"Baby Stop Crying"/"We Better Talk This Over" - 7" singles, CBS 6697 (Holland for Europe/West Germany), Jun 1978:

CBS 6697 (West Germany) - front scan by Hans Seegers (promo release)
Both tracks are the regular versions from Street-Legal.

The West German promo has a "CBS-Blitzinformation" sleeve in a new orange/yellow design. For the sleeves of the various West German promo singles with the previous red/white promo design, see yearly pages from 1971 onwards.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for the information that my copy (shown above) was made in Heemstede, Holland, but not actually sold in that country. It was distributed Europe-wide to countries that didn't release their own local version. He says: "Your 'Dutch' rear sleeve was never released in Holland. It was made in Heemstede, Holland, but only for export to all European countries who did not made it themselves and ordered it from CBS International in Heemstede. Your rear sleeve comes with a sticker "CB 111" over the printed "EC (in a circle)"."

Shown above is the actual Dutch rear sleeve plus a rubber-stamped promo label and detail of that label with "Niet voor de verkoop" (not for resale) and the CBS logo on the stamp.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

"Baby Stop Crying"/"We Better Talk This Over" - 7" singles, CBS 6697 (Spain), Jun 1978:

CBS 6697 (Spain) - front scan by Hans Seegers

Máximo Díaz Peña has a Spanish copy of CBS 6697 in a plain white sleeve. It is mislabelled in that it has the same A-side label on both sides, even though the vinyl plays correctly. Hans Seegers informs me there are two label variants:

  1. "(P) CBS Inc. 1978" above "Depósito Legal" on side 1.
  2. "(P) CBS Inc. 1978" below "M-39248-1978" on side 1.

The mislabelled single is of the first type. For the variants, see below.

Thanks to Hans Seegers and Máximo Díaz Peña for information and scans.

Columbia 3-10805 (USA) - A-side of promo and commercial versions, scan by Hans Seegers
Both tracks of the US single were the standard album versions from Street-Legal. For a promo release of the US single with a 4:17 edit of the A-side (this single has it as 5:17), see 1978. The US single was also released as a promo with a "DEMONSTRATION - NOT FOR SALE" stamp on the B-side over the "COLUMBIA" logo.

Jeremy Mayle and Jürgen Wasser have copies with jukebox strips.

For worldwide commercial releases of the US single with the same two tracks, see below. The Canadian single has the 4:17 edit as the A-side, so is listed in 1978.

7" promo and commercial singles - S CBS 6499 (UK), 14 Jul 1978:

S CBS 6499 (UK) - 7" test pressing, A-side scan by Tom Willems (the B-side label is plain white although the side does play New Pony)

Both tracks are the regular studio versions from Street-Legal. This single reached #13 in the UK charts and is in fact Bob's last UK Top Twenty single!

The 7" promo single has buff CBS paper labels with a large red "A" on the A-side. Ronald Born has supplied scans of three copies of the commercial single with different label designs - the A-side of the third copy is exactly the same as the A-side of the second copy, so is not shown. Hans Seegers informs me that there are also copies of the commercial 7" single with "STEREO" on the A-side only, plus copies with injection labels, which could be in either dark-red or brown plastic (the difference on scanning is too small to show). These may date from the late 1970s/early 1980s. For the equivalent US 7" single, Columbia 3-10805, see above.

The UK Limited Edition Special 12" Single, CBS 12-6499, had a picture sleeve and orange/yellow paper labels. The tracks were the same as the 7" single. As far as I know this was the first Bob Dylan commercial 12" single. The Irish 7" single of CBS 6499 exits unbelievably in four variations. As the first and second are similar, only the variant text is shown. The differences all concern the text to the right of the centre hole. As can be seen, the placement and alignment of the text elements differed widely!

This 7" stereo single came in a generic CBS/Sony Japan single sleeve with an insert. Four copies are shown, all with the same insert. The first has white promo labels, the second has the orange commercial labels but with a promo stamp, and the third and fourth are regular commercial releases. The first variant commercial release has the same label style as the promo release without Japanese song titles. The second variant commercial release has Japanese song titles under the English titles.

This very rare single was made in Costa Rica by Indica S.A. (Industria de Discos Centroamericano) and distributed throughout Central America. It came in a distinctive orange/yellow Indica sleeve. This was a special sleeve made to commemorate the centenary of recorded sound with the logo "100 Años del Sonido Grabado. 1877/1977" used for the first time in 1977 but also in the period 1978-79. After this time, Indica returned to the usual orange/white CBS design, see 7" Single Sleeves.

François Guillez has a copy of the UK commercial release with a solid centre that was used as a promo in Israel and has English/Hebrew overprinting in black. "CARGO" must be the Israeli organisation that imported the single. The Hebrew letters to the right of the centre hole below "STEREO" mean "PROMO" and the letters at bottom right mean "Israel". The song title on the B-side of the 12" single is printed as "We'd Better Talk This Over" - a British English speaker has corrected the grammar! The rare Irish 12" single uses the UK sleeve but the record was made in Ireland.

The photograph from which this 12" single artwork was derived was used in 2001 for a UK promotional CD single to celebrate Bob's 60th birthday called The Voice Of Every Generation, see 2001.

Thanks to Hans Seegers, Kenneth Robson, Gerd Rundel, Ronald Born, Manuel García Jara and François Guillez for information and scans.

"Changing Of The Guards" - 7" jukebox singles, CBS JC 117/118 (Italy), Dec 1978:

CBS JC 117 (Italy) - A-side scan by Peter Denzler
These two singles apparently each had the full-length version of the track from Street-Legal (6:36) on the A-side and a no Dylan track on the B-side. JC 117 has Io Ti Amero by Ana Y Johnny, while JC 118 has Black Water Gold by The Sunshine Band.

Peter Denzler says: "JC 117 has an edit of Changing Of The Guards, which I think to be unique; it is not the single edit, but a fade out of the album version, fading out 38 seconds early at 5:58 mins." Although the record label lists the song as 6:36 - the then standard length - Tom Willems confirms it is 5:58. The edit is now included as a rarity in 1978. (His copy has a plain white B-side label with handwritten information but the side still plays R-0765. Does JC 118 also have the faded version? Changing Of The Guards, the full original Street-Legal version (6:36), is 30 seconds shorter than the 1999 remixed/remastered version. It's now still available on CD on 1994's Greatest Hits Vol. 3, and even on the 2007 3CD set Dylan, so it's not a rarity.

Thanks to Hans Seegers, Peter Denzler and Tom Willems for information and scans.

"Changing Of The Guards"/"Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power)" - 7" single, S CBS 6935 (UK), 29 Dec 1978:

S CBS 6935 (UK) - A-side scan by Hans Seegers
Both tracks are the regular studio versions from Street-Legal. The B-side has a misprint on the word "Señor" - the tilde over the "n" to make "ñ" is misplaced to over the "e"!

For a UK promo 7" single with the same catalogue number with both full length and edited versions of the A-side, see 1978.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

"When I Paint My Masterpiece" - radio station promo?, Columbia (catalogue number?) (USA), 1978-79:

R-0139 When I Paint My Masterpiece - a previously unknown version is said to have been played on the radio in the US in 1978-79, this could have been the live version from the film Renaldo & Clara, but it has not been otherwise reported as a radio station promo. Can anyone confirm?
