This is part of a list by release date of international (now including the USA, which was once listed separately) promo and commercially-released stereo 7" and 12" singles and EPs for 1978 that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know many are not included on any other Internet site. Special thanks to Hans Seegers for many of these items! Stereo promo versions of commercially released singles that were formerly listed in the Promotional Items sections of the yearly pages are now listed here. Singles released in this time period exclusively for promotional purposes are now here also. I would also like to include cassette singles here, but I don't have any, and none have been notified to me so far.
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Bob Dylan and The Rolling Thunder Revue - "4 Songs From "Renaldo And Clara" " - promo 12" EP releases, Columbia AS 422 (USA), Jan 1978:
Renaldo And Clara (see VHS & DVD 1970s) lasted for over four hours, and was very badly received by critics. It had only a very short cinema release, even in a badly chopped-down two hour version. The full film was shown on TV in Europe a couple of times in the 1980s. It has never been commercially released for home viewing, which is a shame because it contains around 45 minutes of superlative concert footage. For informed discussion of this and Bob's other screen appearances, see C.P. Lee's well-received book "Like A Bullet Of Light ". This promo-only four track 12" EP contains an otherwise unavailable performance from the rehearsals before the film and three from the live shows. It has a plain buff card sleeve with a front sticker and either a black or a gold promo stamp. The record has white promo Columbia labels. For full details, see 1978.
People Get Ready (Curtis Mayfield) - rehearsals, Studio Instrumental Rentals, New York, October 1975, also released on the 1993 Japanese promo CD Mr. D's Collection # 3, see 1993.
It Ain't Me Babe - live, Harvard Square Theatre, Cambridge, MA, 20 Nov 1975, also released on the Japanese promo CD Mr. D's Collection # 3, 1993, and European Unplugged Dignity CD singles 1995, and now also available on the 2001 Japanese live compilation Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances, see 2001. The version of this performance released in Nov 2002 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue, is a remix.
Never Let Me Go (Joseph Wade Scott) - duet with Joan Baez, live with the Rolling Thunder Revue, The Forum, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975, also released on the 1993 Japanese promo CD Mr. D's Collection # 3, see 1993.The omission of this song from The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue (see International Album Releases (Regular) ) is inexplicable!
The fourth song on this EP was Isis, also live with the Rolling Thunder Revue, The Forum, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975. No longer a rarity, this was later released as the B-side of the 1984 Dutch Jokerman single (see 1984), and on Biograph (see 1985). The version on the bonus DVD with the Limited Edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue is an otherwise unavailable remix of this (see 2002).
Clinton Heylin's "Bootleg" book says that my second copy of the 12" EP, like most circulating, is a counterfeit because the "DEMONSTRATION/Not For Sale" stamp is black whereas the printing on the genuine item (such as my first copy) is in gold - however this story is disputed by Bob Paxon, who has had record industry connections, and says both are genuine. Arie de Reus says the copies with black stamps were produced at Columbia's Pitman, NJ, processing plant, and are indeed genuine.
The Band - "El Peso [The Weight]"/Bob Dylan & The Band - "Van A Dejarme Libre [I Shall Be Released]" - limited edition 7" stereo single, Hispavox/Warner Bros (no catalogue number) (Spain), Apr 1978:
This is the only 7" single from The Last Waltz with Bob Dylan released anywhere worldwide. It was in a limited edition of 100, the copy shown is #37. As the B-side is a Dylan rarity, full details are in 1978.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for the information that my copy (shown above) was made in Heemstede, Holland, but not actually sold in that country. It was distributed Europe-wide to countries that didn't release their own local version. He says: "Your 'Dutch' rear sleeve was never released in Holland. It was made in Heemstede, Holland, but only for export to all European countries who did not made it themselves and ordered it from CBS International in Heemstede. Your rear sleeve comes with a sticker "CB 111" over the printed "EC (in a circle)"."
Shown above is the actual Dutch rear sleeve plus a rubber-stamped promo label and detail of that label with "Niet voor de verkoop" (not for resale) and the CBS logo on the stamp.
Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

SALE" stamp on the B-side over the "COLUMBIA" logo. Jeremy Mayle and Jürgen Wasser have copies with jukebox strips. For worldwide commercial releases of the US single with the same two tracks, see below. The Canadian single has the 4:17 edit as the A-side, so is listed in 1978. |

"Baby Stop Crying"/"New Pony" - 7" single, CBS 11916 (Costa Rica), Jun 1978:
This very rare single was made in Costa Rica by Indica S.A. (Industria de Discos Centroamericano) and distributed throughout Central America. It came in a distinctive orange/yellow Indica sleeve. This was a special sleeve made to commemorate the centenary of recorded sound with the logo "100 Años del Sonido Grabado. 1877/1977" used for the first time in 1977 but also in the period 1978-79. After this time, Indica returned to the usual orange/white CBS design, see 7" Single Sleeves.

Both tracks are the regular studio versions from Street-Legal.

|
S CBS 12 6718 (Ireland) - 12" single B-side scan by Manuel García Jara |
The song title on the B-side of the 12" single is printed as "We'd Better Talk This Over" - a British English speaker has corrected the grammar! The rare Irish 12" single uses the UK sleeve but the record was made in Ireland.
The photograph from which this 12" single artwork was derived was used in 2001 for a UK promotional CD single to celebrate Bob's 60th birthday called The Voice Of Every Generation, see 2001.

"Changing Of The Guards" - 7" jukebox singles, CBS JC 117/118 (Italy), Dec 1978:
CBS JC 117 (Italy) - A-side scan by Peter Denzler |
These two singles apparently each had the full-length version of the
track from Street-Legal (6:36) on the A-side and a no Dylan track on
the B-side. JC 117 has Io Ti Amero by Ana Y Johnny, while JC 118 has
Black Water Gold by The Sunshine Band. Peter Denzler says: "JC 117 has an edit of Changing Of The Guards, which I think to be unique; it is not the single edit, but a fade out of the album version, fading out 38 seconds early at 5:58 mins." Although the record label lists the song as 6:36 - the then standard length - Tom Willems confirms it is 5:58. The edit is now included as a rarity in 1978. (His copy has a plain white B-side label with handwritten information but the side still plays R-0765. Does JC 118 also have the faded version? Changing Of The Guards, the full original Street-Legal version (6:36), is 30 seconds shorter than the 1999 remixed/remastered version. It's now still available on CD on 1994's Greatest Hits Vol. 3, and even on the 2007 3CD set Dylan, so it's not a rarity. Thanks to Hans Seegers, Peter Denzler and Tom Willems for information and scans. |
