"Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?" - 8" mono acetate, Columbia CO 87184 (USA), Dec 1965:

R-0530  Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? - slightly longer version than that released as a single in Jan 1966

Confirmation of this item required! If it exists, it's still a rarity.

"Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?" - 8" & 12" stereo acetates, Columbia CO 87184 (USA), Dec 1965:

CrawlUSStereoAcetate.jpg (17309 bytes)
Photograph from eBay
R-0513 Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? - stereo version, officially unreleased until 2015

The left-hand acetate has an "audiodisc" generic label and typed text. It was manufactured for Columbia by Capitol Magnetics, Winchester, VA. The right-hand acetate has a generic label from Columbia Recording Studios, Nashville, TN, with red handwriting. The length is shown as 3:37.

On his Electric Dylan site Roger Ford says: "Here the ten seconds of extended play-out in the stereo mix do at least give us a little bit more singing by Dylan - a sort of hummed blues riff in between his blasts on the "police car" whistle, plus a shout just as the track fades."

Scan by Gerhard Schinzel

Unfortunately this stereo version did not appear (even in very poor quality) on a CBS Spanish single in 1972 as previously misreported. The performance available on Masterpieces (1978) and Biograph (1985, remastered CD release 1997) and the 2000 Essential Bob Dylan/Ultimate Bob Dylan compilations is from the original single and still in mono!

The single version released in Nov 2015 on the 18CD Collector's Edition of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (CD10, track 12) is in stereo and has been remixed from the original tapes. R-0513 will still remain a rarity, because of the limited availability of this massive set.

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for finding the audiodisc acetate on eBay and to Gerhard Schinzel for the scan of the Columbia acetate.

"Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?"/"Highway 61 Revisited" - promo and commercial 7" mono singles, Columbia 4-43477 (USA), Dec 1965/Jan 1966:

Columbia 4-43477 (USA) - A-side of promo single with handwritten date, scan by Renaud Depierreux

Dylan discographies give the US release date as 27 Dec 1965, but members of the internet newsgroup rec.music.dylan disputed this date, claiming the single was not in record stores until Jan 1966. According to Hans Seegers, 27 Dec 1965 is the date the US single was released for airplay (see the stamp on the B-side of the promo Columbia single), not to stores, while Renaud Depierreux's promo single has a handwritten date of "12-18-65" (18 Dec 1965), which is even earlier. Renaud's single has matrix numbers: Side A - JZSP 112316-1F, Side B - JZSP 112315-1F, the same as the numbers beneath the catalogue number on both sides. Some US promo copies were mislabelled and had the B-side label on both sides even though the A-side played "Crawl" correctly.

The B-side, Highway 61 Revisited, is the mono album version (3:20), slightly shorter than the stereo album version (3:28). This was a rarity (R-0488), but is now included on the mono release of Highway 61 Revisited as part of the 9CD set The Original Mono Recordings in Oct 2010. This single was re-released in Nov 2011 in a boxed set of four 7" mono vinyl singles. The sleeve used the CBS Denmark front design, see below, while the labels had a similar design to that of the CDs in the 9CD mono set with a "365 SOUND"/MONO/arrows logo.

Columbia 43477 (USA), 2010s:

"Columbia 43477" (USA) - fake front photo by Francisco Lima

Thanks to Francisco Lima for finding a picture sleeve for "Columbia 43477" with what looks like a copy of the original 7" single. Hans Seegers thinks this is not contemporary, and it is almost certainly unauthorised by Columbia. Peter Denzler has found another "43477" sleeve, which again may be a fake, but this time the photos are contemporary.

This single was re-released in Nov 2011 in a boxed set of four 7" mono vinyl singles. It uses the 1965 US sleeve but this was poorly reproduced - both the 2011 and 1965 scans are by Augie Krater and you can see the 1965 sleeve is cleaner and brighter, while the labels had a similar design to that of the CDs in the 9CD mono set The Original Mono Recordings released in Oct 2010 with a "365 SOUND"/MONO/arrows logo.

The 18CD Collector's Edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 - Bob Dylan 1965-1966 The Cutting Edge includes nine of the mono 7" singles released in 1965 and 1966 with new picture sleeves and a "leopard-skin" spindle with which to play the singles. Columbia 4-43477 from Jan 1966 is included as Columbia/Legacy 88875124402-(SV)4 with the US commercial single labels. The front is from the Italian single release CBS 1900 but the rear is modelled on the rear of the US album Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits.

Thanks to Fred Muller for spotting that the B-side record label of the Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?/Highway 61 Revisited single lists the song title wrongly as "Highway 61". The sleeve of the original Italian single implies that Highway 61 Revisited is the A-side but Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? is this single A-side, although Highway 61 Revisited was the A-side of the original Italian single.

Thanks to Larry Crum, Hans Seegers, Renaud Depierreux and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

CBS 201900 (UK) - acetate A-side scan by Arie de Reus
The European release date was definitely Jan 1966 or later - this is supported by the fact that the UK single labels below have the text "(P) 1966" and the Dutch single labels below has the text "Recording first published 1966" (Highway 61 Revisited is listed as first published 1965, as you would expect). Also, the French test pressing is dated 5 Jan 1966 and the UK acetate on the right is dated 14 Jan 1966.

Shown above is a 7" single-sided metal acetate of the A-side of CBS 201900 (UK). Because there's a hole punched through the metal of Arie's copy it's not possible to read the release date. Bruce Mulle has a copy of the same acetate where the release dated in 14 Jan 1966, with "14/1" added in red marker pen, with all the other variable information typewritten. Bruce's copy comes in a generic CBS UK 7" sleeve. Both acetate labels have suffered damage from glue leaking through.

The promo UK single was available with a push-out centre only. The commercial UK single was available with a push-out centre and a solid centre. |François Guillez hs a commercial copy with a promo sticker on the A-side. It comes in a generic orange CBS UK sleeve and has no sticker on the B-side.

Some copies of the UK single are reported to have had a picture sleeve, but this may well have been one of two "generic" Highway 61 Revisited sleeves sold in 1965 - for illustrations of these generic sleeves provided by Hans Seegers see 7" Singles Sleeves. Other European releases had picture sleeves as shown below. As stated above, the B-side R-0488 is included on the mono release of Highway 61 Revisited as part of the 9CD set The Original Mono Recordings in Oct 2010, so is no longer a rarity.

"Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?"/"Highway 61 Revisited" - 7" mono singles, CBS 1.900 (NL), 21 Feb 1966:
I previously listed the release date of this single as Jan 1966, the same as the UK release date, but Tom Willems says the book "Hypnotist Collectors" by Jean-Louis Dréau and Robert Schlockoff (Média Presse, France, 1989) gives the release date as 21 Feb 1966. The single did not enter the Dutch charts, so they're no help.

Right of centre hole: catalogue number is shown as "1.900", playing speed shown as "45 RPM"
    three sub-variants as shown

  2. Left of centre hole: publication date on A-side "1965", publication information printed immediately below time.
Right of centre hole: catalogue number is shown as "1.900", playing speed shown as "45 RPM" (B-side same as variant 1 with "1966")
    three sub variants as shown

  3. Left of centre hole: publication date on A-side "1966", publication information printed lower.
Right of centre hole: catalogue number is shown as "1900", playing speed shown as "45 rpm"

The publication date for the A-side should be "1966" and for the B-side it should be "1965", but it's incorrect on some label variants as shown on the table in red.

CBS 1900 (Sweden) - promo sleeve, front scan by Hans Seegers

The Swedish promo sleeve with the red BOB DYLAN" is extremely rare, as it was printed for CBS by Philips and the reverse bears the Philips logo and text "AB PHILIPS-SONORA" on the back. This was a proof sleeve which was only used for copies which were distributed to music journalists. As can be seen, it is a folded sheet 1½ times the size of a normal sleeve, with printing on both sides.

Michael Bällstav has found a copy of CBS 1900 in a different sleeve, plain white on the rear. The owner thinks the sleeve is Swedish because it is similar to the other Swedish orange top designs, even though Swedish sleeves were normally the same front and rear. Magne Karlstad thinks it is possibly a test print, the regular CBS 1900 release has an unusual yellow-green top which may be a misprint.

The former R-0488 is included on the mono release of Highway 61 Revisited as part of the 9CD set The Original Mono Recordings in Oct 2010, so is no longer a rarity.

Thanks to Magne Karlstad, Hans Seegers and Michael Bällstav for information and pictures.

The former R-0488 on the B-side is included on the mono release of Highway 61 Revisited as part of the 9CD set The Original Mono Recordings in Oct 2010, so is no longer a rarity.

These singles did not have picture sleeves. Stuart Moore has a copy of the first variant of the Australian single with a "NOT FOR SALE" stamp on the B-side.

The second Australian variant has identical distance between the Allan's logo and the catalogue number above and the matrix number below on both sides of the labels to the right of the centre hole. The B-side looks identical to that of Stuart's first variant copy apart from the promo stamp. Manuel García Jara has a copy of this single where the A-side has the same promo stamp.

The third Australian variant has a narrower gap between the Allan's logo and matrix numbers printed below, identical on both sides. This time the A-side looks identical to Hans' copy but the B-side is different.

Augie Krater's copy of the New Zealand single BA-461082 is missing the "45" to the left of the centre CBS logo on the copies owned by Hans Seegers and Bill Hester.

The former R-0488 on the B-side is included on the mono release of Highway 61 Revisited as part of the 9CD set The Original Mono Recordings in Oct 2010, so is no longer a rarity.

The 1966 single was released before Sony took over CBS. It has a folded insert with the lyrics in English in the centre. Les Kokay tells me these lyrics differ from the official lyrics from "Writings and Drawings".

This single is part of the CBS/Sony "Airplay" series and has a "747" sleeve (see 7" Single Sleeves) with two alternate rear sleeves and a folded insert. The rear of the insert lists Dylan albums with release dates up to 1971, so it's possible this is a reissue - the catalogue number dates the single as 1969. It was available in both promo (yellow label) and commercial (orange label) releases. The front, rear and inside of the insert of Hans Seegers' copy have price "¥400". Both the promo and the first commercial records have three-spoke push-out centres.

Even though this was a stereo series, these tracks are still in mono, as the stereo mix of the A-side circulating amongst Dylan collectors has never been officially released. The B-side is timed at 3:15 and used to be a rarity (R-0488). However, R-0488 is included on the mono release of Highway 61 Revisited as part of the 9CD set The Original Mono Recordings in Oct 2010, so is no longer a rarity. For a mono single with the same two tracks released by CBS in 1966 before Sony took over the company, see above.

Manuel has two copies with a modified price of "¥500": both have two small stickers on the front and rear of the folded insert hiding the original price, but not on the inside of the insert as shown. The first copy has the orange colour record with the three spoke push-out centre, identical to the one already shown, as well as the same "Pan-Am" sleeve. The second copy has identical stickers but now the record has an open centre and it has a different "Air-Play/Pan-Am" sleeve, not preciously shown on the 7" Single Sleeves page.

Thanks to Hans Seegers and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

"Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?"/"Highway 61 Revisited" - 7" mono promo and commercial singles, CBS 4-43477 (Philippines), 1966:

CBS 4-43477 (Philippines) - promo A-side scan by Hans Seegers

The very rare CBS 7" mono promo single from the Philippines uses the US catalogue number and has plain white labels with the text rubber-stamped. The former R-0488 appears to be the A-side for the promo copy. Matrix number "JZSP 112315" is on the Highway 61 Revisited side (the former R-0488), while matrix number "JZSP 112316" is on the Can You Crawl... side.

Unlike other Philippines singles released before, the promo and commercial releases are different! The green label commercial release now has Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? as the expected A-side (JZSP 112315) and Highway 61 Revisited as the B-side (JZSP 112316). The text style used in the commercial single is identical to other Philippines singles released before and different from that of the promo release; also, the matrix numbers are not between brackets and even the circumference text is different - the record labels of both releases must have been made by different printing companies.

This copy has (ugly) red stickers on both sides. These stickers have no text and they are glued over other previous stickers, maybe to hide some information (previous owners, radio station or library stickers. for example).

R-0488 is included on the mono release of Highway 61 Revisited as part of the 9CD set The Original Mono Recordings in Oct 2010, so is no longer a rarity.

"Highway 61 Revisited"/"Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?" - 7" jukebox and commercial mono singles, CBS JB 1900 (Italy)/CBS 1900 (Italy), Mar 1966:
This Italian single has the same catalogue number as the Jan 1966 European singles above, but the A- and B-sides are flipped. The rear sleeve is a reproduction of an article by Ray Coleman from UK "Melody Maker " magazine, 9 Jan 1965, and had already been used for international mono singles in 1965, see Mono 7" Singles & EPs 1965. This single is also available as a white label jukebox release, CBS JB 1900. This came in a generic jukebox sleeve.

Various Artists - "Philco Invites You To A Disc-A Go-Go Vol. 1"- 7" mono singles boxed set, Columbia Special Products CSP 120-1302 (USA), Jan 1966:
This box containing five current Columbia 7" singles has the same title as CSP 120-1325 listed here, which has orange text, not pink, and has a different Dylan single, I Want You/Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues (live). Manuel García Jara points out that the single selection in these boxes was completely random, so there is no point in buying one unless you know it contains a Dylan single!

R-0474 Highway 61 Revisited - 2:32 edit on A-side of mono album version (3:20)
As far as I know this 2:32 edit is unique to this EP, the track was edited to fit on the A-side with the title track.

This EP also contains the title track (now on Biograph but still in mono) and Tombstone Blues from Highway 61 Revisited. Thanks to Keith Venturoni for confirmation that the version of Highway 61 Revisited is indeed the edit.

The French EP sleeve shown has an index tab or "languette" - for more information about "languettes", unique to French releases, see 1965. However, Éamonn Ó Catháin has found a copy where the sleeve has no languette, and does not look as if one were ever present. There must therefore have been two releases, both with the same record.

CBS EP 6265 (Spain), Sep 1966:

CBS EP 6265 (Spain) - front without languette, scan by Manuel García Jara (first variant)
The Spanish release does not have a languette, but the sleeve is about 0.75cm larger than the French sleeve. The Spanish release was made by Discophon of Barcelona for CBS and has two rear sleeve variants. The very rare first sleeve has text "DISCOPHON - BARCELONA" at bottom left and "LIM - J. CORRALES 42. ESPLUGAS LL" at bottom right. The more common second sleeve has the "CORRALES" text at bottom left and "Imp. en España/Print. in Spain" at bottom right. The first sleeve is laminated on the front only, while the second sleeve is laminated on both sides. On both sleeves "Rainy" is misspelled as "Raindy". Jim Siddy has a copy where the rear sleeve is the second variant but is laminated on the front only, like the first variant.

CrawlPortFront.JPG (22619 bytes)
CBS 6283 (Portugal) - front with logo in black (variants 1A and 1B, my copy)

This EP has the title track from the single plus Maggie's Farm and On The Road Again from Bringing It All Back Home and Don't Think Twice, It's All Right from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. It was released twice, but there are two rear sleeve variants of the first release.

The first release sleeve was printed by Maránus-Porto, the front CBS logo is in black, and the bottom text line on the rear sleeve is right aligned. Manuel García Jara has a rare variant of the first release where the printer's name at bottom right is missing. The record has orange CBS labels with "FABRICADO EM PORTUGAL" at the bottom.

The second release sleeve was now printed by Gráficos Reunidos-Porto, the front CBS logo is now in red, and the bottom text line on the rear sleeve is now centred. The record has orange CBS labels that now have "FABRICADO EM PORTUGAL POR F.P.D." at the bottom. "F.P.D." means "Fábrica Portuguesa de Discos" but the complete name of this company was actually "Fábrica Portuguesa de Discos da Rádio Triunfo", then known as just "F.P.D." and later as just "Rádio Triunfo".

R-0051M-5 Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 - single edit, 2:26 (mono version)

The other tracks on this mono EP were Bob Dylan's Blues from Freewheelin', Pledging My Time (the full album version from Blonde On Blonde, not the 2:06 edit R-0052) and the single Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? The sleeve is laminated on both sides. The record of the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-EP-6288-A, Side 2 - CBS-EP-6288-B.

Various Artists - "This Is Folk Rock Vol. 2" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS YS-665-C (Japan), Jul 1966:
Despite the fact that Bob always rejected claims he invented or ever played "folk rock", CBS insisted in sticking that label on him! For the first album in the This Is Folk Rock series, see International Compilations: Various Artist Albums 1962-69.

FolkRockJpn2Front.jpg (29158 bytes)
CBS YS-665-C (Japan) - front scan by Hans Seegers
Side 1 had a rarity:

R-0051-2 Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 - single edit, 2:26 (stereo version)

Side 2 had One Of Must Know (Sooner Or Later) but it was the regular stereo album version, not the edited version (R-0380, 3:07) or the unfaded version (R-0050, 4:49) - for both of these see here. I also misreported that Side 2 of this album had the stereo version of Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? - this is now confirmed to be the "standard" mono version, as found on Biograph (1985, remastered CD release 1997) and the 2000/2001 Essential Bob Dylan/Ultimate Bob Dylan compilations. The only occurrence of the stereo version until 2015 was on a CBS stereo acetate, see 1965. (The CBS Spanish 7" EP and singles released in 1972 are now proved to have the track in mispressed mono, not stereo.)

CBS YS-665-C (Japan) - rear scan by Hans Seegers

The single version of Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? released in Nov 2015 on the 18CD Collector's Edition of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (CD10, track 12) is in stereo and has been remixed from the original tapes. R-0513 will still remain a rarity, because of the limited availability of this massive set.

The other tracks on the album are from the Byrds, Simon & Garfunkel, Chad & Jill Stuart and Chad & Jeremy.
