Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for information that iTunes are offering a multimedia download of The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 called Bob Dylan Bootlegs which includes music biographies, rare photos and interactive lyrics to accompany the 35 tracks of the 2CD set. This will be expanded to include the whole of the Bootleg Series albums. |
CD3: Bob Dylan & The Band: Isle of Wight - August 31, 1969
Original Isle of Wight Festival 1969 handbill - front scan by Manuel García Jara |
This is the original recording by Eliot Mazur and Glyn Johns, mixed by Chris
Shaw at Strange Weather Studio. As described below, the 2013 remastered versions
of the four recordings released in 1970 on CD4 are different from the same four
tracks included on CD3. All the otherwise unavailable performances are listed in 2013. The original handbill from the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival (10" x 5¼") has a picture of Bob from Nashville Skyline on the front with a list of the artists performing on both days, while the rear includes a form to use to order tickets. A two day ticket cost £2 10s (£2.50!). |

Bootleg CD release (1998) |
Shown above are the sleeves of two Spanish 7" singles using pictures from the Isle of Wight Festival with Bob is his very unexpected white suit, plus a sample of bootlegs of this show, none of which are in this quality! For the 1972 TMOQ bootleg LP of the show, see below. Thanks to Fred Muller for pointing out there is an error on page 36 of the book that contains the four discs: the date of the IoW concert is given as 30 August 1969. The correct date – a day later – appears on the previous page relating to tracks 7 and 8 of disc 2. Also on page 36 Fred finds it a bit annoying that the track numbers need to be advanced by one as the MC’s introduction is track 1, She Belongs to Me is track 2 and so on, totalling 18 tracks (17 songs). CD4: Self Portrait remastered It was originally reported that the remastered Self Portrait would be resequenced with the originally proposed running order, so that it would start with Alberta No. 1 (see the acetate set below), but this has not happened. The album was remastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound, Edgewater, NJ. Both Peter Coulthard and Éamonn Ó Catháin have found that on the remastered release there is a very annoying glitch which occurs between 47 and 48 seconds into Copper Kettle. The error on their copies seems to be a "skip" of maybe half a second at the point where Bob sings "...jugs a-filling...". From Peter's correspondence with Sterling Sound it appears the glitch is present on all copies of the remastered album. All copies of the deluxe limited edition with Self Portrait had completely sold out before mid Sep 2013. In mid Oct 2013 Sony Music announced they will be sending new copies of Another Self Portrait (1969-1971): The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 [Box set, Deluxe Edition] with a replacement CD 4 that don't contain the defect on Copper Kettle, and these have now arrived. The CD of Self Portrait in The Complete Album Collection Vol. One, Nov 2013, appears to be the same as the replacement CD4 here, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s. Of the remastered Self Portrait Isle of Wight songs, Fred Muller says: "Essentially, the remastered Self Portrait mimics my vinyl version in that the “one more time” edit in Like a Rolling Stone, the feedback squeal in Minstrel Boy and the fading of Levon’s drum roll at the end of The Mighty Quinn have been retained. Like a Rolling Stone running times: On the new Self Portrait the track duration is 5:21. On Isle of Wight the track is 5:25 but includes audience chatter and the count-in at the start; the performance itself starts 8 seconds later making it 5:17 in duration. The reason the edited version runs longer than the full version being that the pitch is different – the mastering was done at different tape speeds and these differences have been maintained." |

The West Houston Street Acetates, 2014:
124 West Houston Street, Greenwich Village, New York City |
Thanks to Jeff Gold, Bruce Mulle and several others for news of 149 Dylan acetates from the Nashville Skyline/Self Portrait/New Morning era that were found in a New York building in West Houston Street, Greenwich Village, that was once rented by Bob as a studio. These have been named "The West Houston Street Acetates" and contain many unreleased versions of Dylan songs from the period. They will be listed in full on the 2014 page when time permits. For full details, see here. |
Self Portrait (1969-70):
Like A Rolling Stone - live, Isle of Wight Festival, 1969, scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca (R-1099) |
The version of Belle Isle from Self Portrait,
here called "Bright Star Of Belle Isle", on the 45 RPM acetate shown sounds very
close to the take from The
Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), having a
different mix but the
same spoken intro. However, immediately after the song Dylan clearly says:
"Always wanted to have done that, it's one of my favourites... Let's just try
this one". The only double sided acetate in the batch, with eight tracks from the 26 Apr 1969 and 3 May 1969 Self Portrait recording sessions, Columbia Studios, Nashville, TN. Side 2 has unreleased versions of Folsom Prison Blues and Ring of Fire (both with full electric band.) All other songs are alternate mixes to the released versions. |

The set of four single-sided acetates contains the Self Portrait album with its final mixes, but with the tracks in a slightly different order from that released (four scans on right). There was a rumour (above) that the remastered Self Portrait with the Deluxe Edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) would be in the original sequence, this may be it.
Tracklisting:
Side 1: Alberta #1; I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know; Days Of 49; Early Morning Rain; It Hurts Me Too (released on Side 4); Little Sadie #2.
Side 2: Let It Be Me; Little Sadie #1; Living The Blues; Woogie Boogie; Belle Isle; Like A Rolling Stone (live). (Living The Blues is track 3 instead of track 5, so Woogie Boogie and Belle Isle become tracks 4 and 5)
Side 3: Take Me As I Am (Or Let Me Go); Copper Kettle; Gotta Travel On; Blue Moon; The Boxer; The Mighty Quinn (live) (Take Me As I Am (Or Let Me Go) is track 1 instead of track 6, so the other tracks are 2-6).
Side 4: Take A Message To Mary; Minstrel Boy (live); She Belongs To Me (live); Wigwam; Alberta #2;
All The Tired Horses (released on Side 1).
New Morning (1970):
|
Variant 1 of New Morning Side 1 shown has five songs: If Not For You, two mixes of Day Of The Locusts, Time Passes Slowly, and New Morning, Winterlude is missing. The label has Bob's handwriting choosing one mix of Day Of The Locusts and modifying titles. Apart from the rejected mix of Day Of The Locusts, these may be the released versions of the songs. See the 2014 page for full details. |

Father Of Night (released mix), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca |
Time Passes Slowly (alternate unreleased take), scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca (R-1113) |
Variant 1 of New Morning Side 2 shown has six songs: New Morning; Sign On The Window; One More Weekend; The Man In Me; Three Angels; Father Of Night. This acetate has Bob Johnston's handwriting on the label and Bob Dylan's handwriting on the sleeve. Sign on the Window has an extra 7 seconds on intro, The Man In Me has an extra 4 seconds on intro, Three Angels has an extra 2 seconds of organ at the beginning. Similar mixes to released album. See the 2014 page for full details.
Variant 2 of New Morning (two discs) has an alternate sequence, but all tracks could be the released mixes.
Variant 3 of New Morning (again two discs) has only ten tracks in a different sequence, omitting Winterlude and Three Angels, but all tracks could be the released mixes.
Also shown are acetates with The Man In Me, If Not For You, Father of Night and Time Passes Slowly. I as yet have no information about The Man In Me, but If Not For You is the album track from New Morning with a different mix including strings. Father Of Night is the New Morning track, but Time Passes Slowly is an unreleased take very different from those released on New Morning and this album The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971). See the 2014 page for full details.
More out-takes from Self Portrait and New Morning are included on the controversial at the time out-takes album Dylan (1973), the very limited 2CD set 50th Anniversary Collection 1969 (see 2019) and the equally limited Dec 2020 3CD set 50th Anniversary Collection 1970, see 2020. |

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971)" - limited edition stereo 180gm vinyl 3LP release, Columbia/Legacy 88883 73489 1 (USA), 27 Aug 2013:
Each record of this 3LP set comes in an outer card sleeve and an inner paper sleeve, and the 3LPs are housed inside a thick card slipcase, which also holds the 12" booklet. Although the European 3LP set below uses the US slipcase (with a sticker), the outer and inner sleeves of the LPs, the LPs themselves, the CD sleeves and the CDs themselves of the US release are different from those of the EU release.
The rear of the US outer LP sleeves have no "SONY MUSIC" logo next to the Columbia logo and different copyright text at the bottom
The US outer LP sleeves have catalogue number "88883 73489 1 JK1/JK2/JK3" on the spine while all EU outer sleeves have "88883 73489 1"
The US inner LP sleeves have catalogue numbers "88883 73489 1-SV1/SV2/SV3" while all EU LP inner sleeves have "88883 73489 1"
The rear of the US CD card sleeves have catalogue numbers "88883757172-JK1" and "88883757182-JK1" and different copyright text on the bottom
All discs (vinyl and CDs) have “Made in U.S.A.” and different copyright text in the circumference
The US booklet looks the same as that of the EU release.
The flyer for The Complete Album Collection Volume One with the US 3LP set is exactly the same as the flyer for the US 2CD set below. It has the catalogue number as "88883734872 I1" instead of just "88883734872".

The heavy card slipcase measures 8¼" x 8¼" (same size as that for the Deluxe Edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs: Rare And Unreleased 1989-2006) and contains two square hardcover books, one including the four discs, and one called "Time Passes Slowly" with photographs. On the rear of the slipcase Self Portrait (CD4) is wrongly listed as being from 1969, not 1970. Gerd Rundel has a copy where the rear slipcase is misprinted with blue colouring on the right-hand side.
The four CDs are housed in pockets inside a fold-out disc section with the information booklet bound into the front half of the first book. The pockets are reproduction of contemporary CBS singles sleeves. The CDs have US copyright information and catalogue numbers CKA-373488, CKB-373488, CKC-373488 and CKD-373488. Like the 3LP set above, the set also includes a flyer for the Complete Album Collection boxed set, due for release in "Fall" 2013. This set contains rarities, so is listed in 2013.
Thanks to Michael V Palinkas for spotting the mistake in the deluxe edition book on the page describing the Isle of Wight concert disc, giving the recording date wrongly as 30 Aug 1969. The concert was recorded on 31 Aug 1969. Éamonn Ó Catháin also points out that on a player that shows CD TEXT, Wild Mountain Thyme on CD3 is wrongly listed as "Wild Mountain Time". This must have been a Friday afternoon production!

Ironically, the design of the remastered Self Portrait CD is not the same as that of the record labels of the first release of the album in 1970, but of the later release from 1971 onwards! The first release record labels used the 1960s "two eye" "STEREO"/"360 SOUND" style. |
