Bob Dylan In Concert: Brandeis
University 1963 (2010) |
This page is part of a list of original releases by release
date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums.
They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the
Searching For A Gem
list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing
here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo
releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. |

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to
existing entries, please let me know!
Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities -
see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the

the collection of Oddbjørn Saltnes with assistance from contributor
Magne Karlstad.
Release date of regular CD edition: 11 Sep 2012 (USA),
7 Sep 2012 (Europe/Australia/New Zealand), 26 Sep 2012

The album artwork was again designed by Japanese-American art
director and graphic artist Coco Shinomiya, who also designed the
artwork for Together Through Life and Christmas In The Heart. She
has an impressive portfolio of albums by many prestigious artists. The cover photo by Alexander Längauer reproduced here courtesy of
www.123rf.com is of one of the
supporting statues of the fountain of Pallas Athene (1893-1902) outside
the Austrian Parliament in Vienna, the four figures representing the
four principal rivers of Austria. She represents the Vltava (Moldau)
River which flows through the modern Czech
Republic including Prague (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) and was sculpted
in 1902 by Carl Kundmann
(1838-1919). An early report
that the statue is "The Ecstasy of St. Theresa" by Gian Lorenzo Bernini
from the Cornaro Chapel, Santa Maria della Vittoria, Rome, proved to be
wrong. The rear insert photo is by William Claxton, the photo on the
rear of the front insert by John Shearer (with a background photo by
Albert Watson), and the band photo in the centre of the front insert is
again by John Shearer. The album is 68 mins and contains ten songs:
- Duquesne Whistle
- Soon After Midnight
- Narrow Way
- Long and Wasted Years
- Pay In Blood
The chorus of this reportedly standout track includes the line "I'll pay in
blood, but not my own."
- Scarlet Town
Scarlet Town is the fictitious town mentioned in the lyrics of the traditional
song Barbara Allen recorded by Bob at the
Gaslight Café, New York, Oct 1962, from
the Starbucks limited edition live CD
Live At The
Gaslight 1962, see 2005.
Scarlet Town is also a song written and recorded by Gillian Welch on
her 2011 Acony Records US acoustic album The Harrow And The Harvest.
- Early Roman Kings
The first single, to be available for download from 7 Aug 2012
- Tin Angel
The Tin Angel was a nightclub in San Francisco, CA, an acoustic club/café
in Philadelphia, PA, and also the name of a
1954 Folkways
album by Odetta and Larry Mohr. Tin Angel is also a song by Joni
Mitchell from her album Clouds.
- Tempest
The 14 minute song about "The Titanic", which refers several times
to
James Cameron's 1997 film "Titanic"
- Roll On John
The song about John Lennon including quotes from Beatles songs.
Roll On John is also the name of a traditional song
recorded by Bob in 1962 during an interview with Cynthia Gooding for the
"Folksinger's Choice" WBAI radio programme, New York City, recorded 13 Jan
1962, broadcast 11 Mar 1962. It was officially released on There Is No Eye:
Music For Photographs (Smithsonian Folkways 40091, USA, Nov 2001), a
compilation CD accompanying the book "There Is No Eye" (quote from the
Highway 61 Revisited sleeve notes) by John Cohen, see
2001.

information that in this picture of Bob by John Shearer used for the inner sleeve front of
Record 2 of the vinyl release, and the rear of the front insert of the
CD releases, the background photo of a woman on the left behind the song titles is by Albert Watson and called "Breaunna

This limited edition 2LP
set comes in a wide 12" sleeve that holds both records. The set also includes
the CD release in a paper sleeve. The included CD in both the US and European
sets has a different catalogue number from the CD in the standard and limited
editions, see below. Both records have printed inner sleeves, the rear of the
inner sleeve of Record 2 is plain black. The vinyl set was pressed in
Haarlem, Holland, by Record Industry for Furnace Mfg, USA.
The
front sticker of the US release has the same text as the European release except “88725457601S1”
at the bottom - the EU 2LP set has “88725457601”. On the rear sleeve the
barcode and the copyright line are different from the EU 2LP set. The US release
also does not have the white Sony Music logo. The record
labels have different text round the circumference and to the right of the centre hole
than the EU 2LP set. The copy shown has matrix numbers:

88725 45760 1
(Germany for Europe) - front with sticker, scan by Gerd Rundel |
The European release was
made in Germany by Optimal Media, not Holland as originally reported (although
Arie de Reus says the discs themselves were also pressed in
Haarlem, Holland, by Record Industry). Additionally there is a
flyer inside – on the front is the cover title photo and on the rear is the same
picture as for the front of the inner sleeve of Record 2. The copy shown has
handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1: AL 88725-457601, Side 2: BL
88725 457601, Side 3: CL 88725 457601, Side 4: DL 88725 457601, plus
“STERLING” stamped on each side. Dr Walter Roedl's copy has matrix numbers:
Side 1 - AL 88725-457601 C545760 RJ (handwritten) STERLING
(stamped) 3C 83811-01 A1(handwritten), Side 2 - BL 88725-457601 C545760 RJ

Side 4 - DL 88725 457601 C545760 DL RJ (handwritten) STERLING (stamped) 3C
83811-02 D1 (handwritten).
The CD has a
different catalogue number from the CDs contained in the Standard and Limited CD
Editions. This is because it was also manufactured by Optimal Media. The CDs in
the CD packages below were manufactured in Germany by Sonopress.
Thanks to Dr. Hanns Peter Bushoff, Gerd Rundel, Dr. Walter Roedl and Derek
Barker for information and scans.

- front of slipcase with sticker, scan by Keith Schweiger (limited edition) |
The limited edition comes in a card slipcase with a booklet containing
pictures of magazine covers featuring Bob from all around the world (see the
European limited edition release below). The CD
in the limited edition is exactly the same as the standard CD, with the same
catalogue number. Thanks to Keith Schweiger and Hank Wellman for scans of the US limited deluxe edition. Thanks to Jens Winter for scans of the Canadian limited deluxe edition,
which has a special limited edition CD made in Canada. The slipcase has a Canadian front
sticker in English and French, but has the US copyright information on the
rear, not the Canadian information as on the CD's rear insert or the CD
itself.

"Together Through Life" - 2CD+DVD release with T-shirt, Columbia

(Europe/Australia/New Zealand), 7 Sep 2012:
Columbia/Sony Music
88725464142 (Europe)
- front of slipcase with sticker, scan by Gerd Rundel (limited edition) |
The European CDs contained in the
Standard and Limited CD Editions were manufactured in Germany by Sonopress,
unlike the CD contained in the Vinyl 2LP set, which was manufactured in Germany
by Optimal Media.
In
Europe
the catalogue number on the rear insert of the Limited Edition is the same as on the
rear of the slipcase, but the
CD itself is the one from the standard edition, so they produced a different
rear insert for the Limited Edition, but not a different CD. To make things more confusing the
catalogue number in the barcode of the slipcase sold in Germany (as well as
Switzerland and Austria) does not match any of the other
catalogue numbers. Thanks to Derek Barker for spotting that the different German
barcode is actually on a sticker, and if you peel off the sticker, the rear of
the slipcase is the same as my copy bought in the UK. In the UK the complete standard CD package with
inserts and CD
were used in the Limited Edition!
Thanks to Derek Barker for information. Thanks to Gerd Rundel and Wil Gielen
for the European and Japanese catalogue numbers and to Gerd Rundel and Jens
Winter for the scans.

Book Union (a chain
of stores in Japan) had a free "gift" item if you bought something in their book
shop. It's a 13.5 cm x 4.5 cm (approx. 5.5" x 2") Bob Dylan bookmark made from
glossy thick card. The two pictures on the rear of the bookmark are: "Record
Collectors' Magazine", issue for Oct 2012 with a Tempest article inside;
the Japanese Tempest limited edition album (Sony Music SICP 3663). The
bookmark was released separately from the CDs, and no Dylan purchase was
required.

unique catalogue number on the digipak: 88725464152, but the CD itself is

compare catalogue number and barcode with European limited edition)
For scans of the European front insert and CD, see above. Thanks to David
McBride for photos of a copy with a promo sticker. Jens Winter has a copy of the
Standard Edition sold in Germany and says: "To
my surprise it doesn't show the catalogue number on the rear insert I expected
(88725457602), but the same as the German Deluxe edition again (88725465412 )
instead. As with the US/UK editions the only difference between the Standard and
Deluxe Edition is the sticker on the jewel case. This sticker (as well as the
CD) bears the 88725457602 number by the way. So my guess is in those regions
where they sold the Deluxe Edition with the unique rear cover
(Germany/Austria/Switzerland), they used the same CD package also for the
Standard edition. We not only have two different Deluxe versions in UK and
Germany, but also two different Standard versions!"

(Japan) - front of slipcase with obi and sticker, scan by Wil Gielen |
Like the
Japanese limited edition above, this release has a wraparound obi with
release date "12-9-26" (26 Sep 2012), withdrawal date "13-3-25" (25 Mar
2013) and USA release date "12-9-11" (11 Sep 2012).
The obi price is now
¥2,520
(¥2,400
plus sales tax) - the limited edition price was
¥2,800
(¥2,667

sticker, the same as on the limited edition: "To mark the 50th anniversary
of his debut! Official goods present prize draw! Bob Dylan signature
harmonica (30 winners). Details and how to apply are in the homepage link.
Closing date for entries 30th November 2012. Only the winners will be
notified". As well as the standard folded front insert, the album
contains an additional 34-page booklet with text in Japanese; lyrics to all
Tempest songs (in Japanese only); plus a complete Bob Dylan discography,
where the studio albums only are numbered (other album have different
codes), so Tempest is #35 (this site numbers it as #57).

All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker
card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown.
The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK41"
plus "DISC 45". The CDs are different in detail, the US
Tempest CD has
catalogue number "88691924312D45", whereas
the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-45". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria).
