This page contains items that aren't eligible for the main Searching For A Gem or International Stereo Releases lists because Bob does not personally perform on them, but are nevertheless of interest to Dylan collectors. There's no specific qualification for inclusion other than I have the item or it's been notified to me by a contributor as being worthy of inclusion. This is not intended to be a comprehensive section on Dylan Covers. The late Dave Plentus' excellent Dylan Cover Albums site is now kept alive on Expecting Rain by Karl-Erik Anderson here and these pages are not intended to match or replace it. Because Bob's songs gain an extra resonance when sung by women, this page includes notable female cover albums (and a small number of other releases) contributed by Dylan collectors. The other Honourable Mentions pages are listed below.

These mono EPs licensed by Vanguard have her cover of Bob's then unreleased song on the A-side and different other songs. In Spain, the EP "Buen Viaje, Angelina [Farewell Angelina]" was released in the same picture sleeve simultaneously under two different licenses and with two different catalogue numbers: Amadeo (HAM 257-05) and Vanguard itself (HVA 477-05), even though they were manufactured and distributed by the same company (Hispavox). Also shown is the French Amadeo release of the 1965 US Vanguard LP (VSD-79200). Farewell Angelina also appeared in a live version from 1983 on her Vanguard anthology Rare, Live & Classic, which has several performances with Bob, see 1993.

Joan Baez - "Joan Baez" - stereo vinyl release, Vanguard C 104/7 (NL), 1968:

Vanguard C 104/7 (NL) - Side 2 scan by Manuel García Jara (includes three Dylan covers)

This was an exclusive compilation made by Vanguard for "Boek en Plaat [Book and Record]", a Dutch mail order club. (A different Spanish mail order club with the same name, "DiscoLibro", released an exclusive edition of Desire.) This album has the "Boek en Plaat" logo on the rear sleeve, but not on the record labels, as was usual for records made for this club. It includes three Dylan covers on side 2: Farewell, Angelina, Daddy, You Been On My Mind and It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (tracks 1-3), but the most interesting track on this record is We Shall Overcome (Side 1, track 1) credited as performed by "Joan Baez accompanying herself on the guitar with Bob Dylan". Joan Baez sings and plays guitar, but there is also an ensemble vocal - Bob must be singing background vocals here. There is no information for this track, but it is on fact the performance from Joan Baez In Concert Part 2 (see Honourable Mentions), not the live performance taken from the Newport Folk Festival from the Vanguard album Evening Concerts At Newport Vol. 1 (see 1964) as previously listed.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

This album by Odetta was noticeable for including covers of several songs then unreleased by Bob including Long Ago Far Way and Long Time Gone, both now officially released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964 in Oct 2010. The picture on the rear of the 2000 CD front insert is from her 1963 RCA Victor album Odetta Sings Folk Songs, which included Blowin' In The Wind, not on the 1965 album. For legal reasons the EPs were published in Spain by EMI through another subsidiary ("La Voz de su Amo" = "His Master's Voice").

Linda Gayle  - "Maggie's Farm"/"Got My Mojo Working" - mono 7" single releases, Columbia 4-43462 (USA/Canada), Nov 1965;  "Linda Gayle" - 7" mono EP release, CBS 5993 (Portugal), 1966:

Columbia 4-43462 (USA) - 7" single A-side picture from www.discogs.com
Linda Gayle is not Linda Gail Lewis, the sister of Jerry Lee Lewis who also recorded an album with Van Morrison. She was an obscure rhythm and blues/country female singer who recorded an excellent cover of Maggie's Farm released in Nov 1965 and produced by none other than Bob Johnston! Manuel says "Bob Johnston captures the same spirit of Highway 61 Revisited recorded only a month before this single!" The two singles recorded by Linda Gayle for Columbia Records were compiled and released in Portugal as a very rare EP from CBS in 1966. Curiously, the catalogue number of this EP is 5993, the consecutive Portuguese release after Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited EP (CBS 5992).

For The Concert For Bangladesh by George Harrison and Friends, New York, 1971, featuring five live performances by Bob, see 1972. This single from Joan Baez is another charity fundraiser for the Bangladeshi people. It was made by Hispavox S.A. of Madrid for A&M Records (Hispavox also made Joan Baez Spanish Vanguard releases, see above). Also shown are US, UK and German releases. The 1978 Booker T single below was made by Epic for A&M Records, while the 1973 Booker T and Priscilla Jones single of The Crippled Crow with Bob playing harmonica was made by Ariola-Eurodisc for A&M Records, see 1973.

Roberta Flack - "Killing Me Softly With His Song"/"Just Like A Woman" - stereo vinyl 7" single: Atlantic/Discos Teal ATS 597 (Angola), 1973:

Atlantic/Discos Teal ATS 597 (Angola) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (all variants)

This very rare single with a Dylan cover on the B-side was released in the former Portuguese colony of Angola by Discos Teal Roda LDA of Luanda on behalf of Atlantic Records. There are two mistakes on the first B-side label - the song title is given as "Just Lik A Woman" and the record company is given as "Atantic" to the right of the centre hole. Ronald Born has a copy with the same front sleeve and record labels, but the rear sleeves are different. (Manuel explains there are actually four different rear sleeves and three different record labels.)

Holland

France

Germany

Other worldwide Atlantic single examples showing this was the regular B-side

Manuel's second copy shown has a third rear sleeve design and a second record label design - Just Like A Woman and "Atlantic" to the right of the centre hole are now correct, but the label has been printed at the wrong size so that "Atlantic" to the right of the centre hole is truncated to "Atlant" and the circumference text is almost entirely missing (some is just visible on the right edge). A fourth copy with a fourth variant rear sleeve design and a third variant record label will be added soon.

Other Atlantic single examples are included to show this was the regular B-side for this 7" release.

Bar None Records BRNCD 132 (USA) - front of card sleeve with sticker (my promo copy, rear is plain white)

This album recorded live by Mary Lee Kortes and her band at Arlene Grocery, New York, 13 Aug 2002, recreates Bob's classic 1974 album track by track, with the added piquancy that the songs are sung by a woman with no lyric gender changes. Mary Lee invites a male audience member to join her in singing Lily, Rosemary And The Jack Of Hearts, which he does extremely badly!

Thanks to Liz Campanile for the promo copy, which comes in a white card sleeve with a front sticker. Thanks to Jack from Canada for scans of the commercial release, which comes in a regular jewel case with a front sticker. The promo and commercial CDs are identical.

Julie Felix - "Starry Eyed And Laughing... Songs By Bob Dylan" - 2CD set: Remarkable Records RR 799-2 (UK), 2002:

Remarkable Records RR 799-2 (UK) - front scan by André Wilbers
American folk singer Julie Felix, who died in England in Mar 2020, covered Dylan songs many times in her long career beginning in 1964, much of which was spent performing in Britain, where she even had her own 1960s TV show. (I saw her live in Manchester in the 1960s.) This 2CD set has twenty Dylan covers. Julie has also recorded a cover of Blowin' In The Wind on a 1982 album with the same title, see Blowin' In The Wind Covers 1970s Onwards.

Tracklisting:

CD1: Chimes Of Freedom; Mr Tambourine Man; Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands; Subterranean Homesick Blues; One Too Many Mornings; Romance In Durango; Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues; The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll; Gates Of Eden; I Shall Be Released.

The song is actually Don’t Ever Take Yourself Away, which circulates amongst Dylan collectors on several bootlegs such as "The Genuine Bootleg Series". She's revised Bob's lyrics, rewriting the verses but keeping the tune and choruses. Back-up singers on this song are Betty Wright and Aisha McCrary, while other songs were co-written with Burt Bacharach, Carly Simon and Carole King who sings backup on their composition.
