FALSE BOTTOM | 1967 | Y |
Lyrics of a previously unknown song in a box of unrecorded lyrics and song fragments from 1967 held at the Bob Dylan Archive, University of Tulsa, OK. Thanks to Derek Barker and "Isis" magazine for information |
FARE THEE WELL | 1963 | O |
Early version of FAREWELL, see
below, based on the traditional song THE LEAVING OF LIVERPOOL,
as sung by the Clancy Brothers, the Spinners, etc. (thanks to Gil Lamont
for reminding me of this), Witmark demo, recorded Witmark offices, New
York, probably Mar 63,
also circulating on various performances January-May 1963. The
lyrics (4 verses) were published in "Broadside" and "Sing Out!" This
Witmark demo version was short-listed for "The
Bootleg Series, Vols. 1-3". Now officially released on "The Bootleg Series Vol.
9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964" in Oct 2010 as FAREWELL. The song was covered under this title in 1963 by Pete Seeger (see albums above) and by British skiffler Lonnie Donegan (see top of page) - the first occurrence of Lonnie's version I have details of is a 1965 album on the Pye Golden Guinea budget label called "The Lonnie Donegan Folk Album" (which is probably a compilation so I'd welcome details of an earlier releases). This version is available on CD on his 1999 compilation "Talking Guitar Blues: The Very Best Of Lonnie Donegan" (Sequel/Castle, 1999, UK), on a 1993 Sequel various artists compilation of Dylan covers "The Songs Of Bob Dylan" (Sequel NEB CD 655), and on the May 2001 release "It Ain't Me, Babe/Zimmerman Framed: The Songs Of Bob Dylan" (Castle Communications CMRCD 261, UK). Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for information that the Pete Seeger "Little Boxes" album is available by mail order from Smithsonian Folkways as a custom CD, Folkways FH 5302, see . The song is sometimes named wrongly as MY OWN TRUE LOVE |
FAREWELL | 1964 | S |
Later version of FARE THEE WELL, out-take from "The Times They Are A-Changin'", recorded Columbia Studios, New York, 6 Aug 1963. The lyrics to the version released on "The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964" in Oct 2010 are on bobdylan.com here, Available as a cover by Judy Collins on her "Judy Collins 3" and "Recollections" Elektra albums, also covered by the Carter Family, the Hillmen, Dion, Dorinda Duncan, Linda Mason and the Golden Gate Strings. Bob's version is now officially released on the soundtrack album of the Coen brothers film "Inside Llewyn Davies", Nonesuch Records, USA, Sep 2013, produced by T-Bone Burnett and the Coen brothers |
Two more Dylan cover albums by female
singers that contain the song FAREWELL: The Songs Of Bob
Dylan Through The Heart Of A Girl by Dorinda Duncan and How Many Seas by Linda
Mason - scans by David Plentus
FAREWELL PAMILINA | 1963 | Y |
Not a misprint for FAREWELL ANGELINA, released on "The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3", but the earliest version of FAREWELL, see above, submitted for copyright as an unpublished manuscript only. According to Clinton Heylin (Rain Unravelled Tales II, p 65) FAREWELL PAMILINA had only 3 verses - information on all the FAREWELL name and verse variations from Tim Dunn |

Lyrics of this
song were handed out to extras at the filming of "Hearts Of Fire", Colston
Hall, Bristol, 9 Sep 1986, and it's mentioned on a Dylan web-site as
being a possible Dylan composition. In explanation, Ian Woodward says: "I
was one of those extras at the Colston Hall. Though not visible in the
film, remember that I was paid to see Bob Dylan! Not many can say
that. As for the song, it was performed by Richie Havens ("Pepper" in
the film, I think). It is correct that the extras were given a copy of
the lyrics as I seem to recall we had to sing along. Whatever, I got my
lyric sheet signed by Richie - "To the Wicked Messenger, a friend
forever and ever, Health, peace, love, Richie Havens"." Interestingly, "Still On The Road - The Songs Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2: 1974-2008" by Clinton Heylin (2010) repeats the web-site assertion that it might be a Dylan song. In fact the song is by the Neville Brothers, and first appeared on their 1984 Black Top/Demon live album "Neville-ization". It has also appeared on "Treacherous: A History Of The Neville Brothers" (Rhino, 1988) and "The Very Best Of The Neville Brothers" (Rhino, 1997), "Live At Tipitina's 1982" (Rhino, 1998) and the various artists compilation "Mardi Gras Party" (Rhino, 1999). Thanks to "Isis" magazine for reminding me that the "Hearts of Fire" closing titles do indeed credit the song as performed by Richie Havens as Pepper Ward to Art and Cyril Neville. Thanks to Tenho from Finland, Tim Dunn and Ian Woodward for information |

FOREVER MY DARLING | Ferdinand Washington/Don Robey, 1983 | N? |
Song recorded during the
"Infidels" sessions at The Power Station, New
York, 26 Apr 1983. Thanks to Gil Walker and Tom Ostoyich for the information that this is
actually a song called PLEDGING MY LOVE, written by Ferdinand
Washington and Don Robey
(the first line is "Forever my darling our love will be true.").
Bob recorded several covers, including THIS WAS MY LOVE by Jim
Harbert, at these sessions as warm-ups, this song was one of the ones
not initially identified. PLEDGING MY LOVE was originally recorded by Johnny Ace (John Alexander), who shot himself while playing Russian Roulette in his dressing room backstage in Houston, TX, on Christmas Eve, 1954. It was released posthumously as a single in 1955 on the Duke label, becoming his biggest hit. The president of Duke Records was Don Robey, who regularly claimed a writer's credit on the songs he released. PLEDGING MY LOVE by Johnny Ace can be today found on CD on his "Memorial Album", originally released by Duke Records in 1955 and now available as MCAD 31383. Johnny Ace also released in 1954 the original version of NEVER LET ME GO, recorded by Bob in a live version with Joan Baez and the Rolling Thunder Revue, The Forum, Montreal, Canada, 4 Dec 1975, from the Columbia 12" promo EP "4 Songs From "Renaldo And Clara" ", see "Searching For A Gem", 1978. This is a hoax song title named in a joke article in the UK magazine "New Musical Express" in the early 70s about a fictitious Dylan Christmas album called "Snow Over Interstate 80". For more details, see my "Snow Over Interstate 80" page. |
