(Indefinite and definite articles at the beginning of song titles are ignored, so A WOMAN LIKE YOU is on the "W" page, and THE KING IS ON THE THRONE is on the "K" page.)
RAGHUPATI RASHAVA | Bob Dylan/Allen Ginsberg(?), 1971 | S |
Recorded at The Record Plant, New York, 17 Nov 1971 - intended for Ginsbergs "Holy Soul Jelly Roll" album, but as yet unreleased - according to some reports this is not a Dylan/Ginsberg composition but a traditional song called RAGHUPATI RAGHAVA associated with Mahatma Gandhi and also with the Weavers. Thanks to Gil Walker for information |
RAINBOW | Bob Dylan?, 1983 | N? |
Song recorded during the "Infidels" sessions at The Power Station, New York, 14 Apr 1983 |
RAMBLIN' WOMAN BLUES/RAMBLIN' WOMAN | 1969 | N |
Unreleased song written by George Harrison, recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London in 1969. This song is misidentified on several bootlegs as being written by Dylan, but it is actually only a Dylan pastiche |
REACH OUT | 1981 | N? |

THE RED DOOR | 1967-68 | Y |

Otherwise unknown song title named by Helena Springs in an interview with Chris Cooper printed in "Wanted Man: In Search Of Bob Dylan" edited by John Bauldie (Black Spring Press, UK, 1990) - may be included on a demo tape by Helena Springs performing her joint compositions with Bob, no Dylan performance known |
The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs
- 3CD Expanded Edition which contains two versions of RED
RIVER SHORE
RED RIVER SHORE [GIRL FROM THE RED RIVER SHORE] | Bob Dylan, 1997 | S |
Out-take from the "Time
Out Of Mind" sessions, which took place at Criterion Sound Studio,
Miami, FL, Jan 1997. This
song title was long thought to refer to a traditional song, THE
GIRL ON THE RED RIVER SHORE - thanks to Tim Dunn for confirming
that there was indeed a copyrighted Dylan song with this title. THE
GIRL ON THE RED RIVER SHORE is listed in John A. Lomax & Alan
Lomax's book "American Ballads & Folk Songs", with words from Slim Critchlow
of the Utah Buckaroos, Salt Lake City, UT, an interesting connection
being the first line of the fourth verse:
This line was of course borrowed by Bob for NOT DARK YET from "Time Out Of Mind". Now released in 2008 on "The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs" with a second version on CD3 of the 3CD Expanded Edition. |
RED TRAVELLIN SHOES | 1961 | N? Y |

RIGHT HAND ROAD BLUES | Bob Dylan?, 1985 | S |

In The Right Place (Atco, USA, 1973) - Dr. John's album with
"co-composition" RIGHT PLACE, WRONG TIME
RIGHT PLACE, WRONG TIME | Mac Rebennack/Bob Dylan, 1973 | N |
In his autobiography "Under A Hoodoo
Moon" Dr. John (Mac Rebennack) says: "A lot of
different artists pitched in to give me lines on the song RIGHT PLACE,
WRONG TIME. Bob Dylan started it off by laying a line on me - 'I'm on
the right trip, but in the wrong car.'" Thanks to Gil Walker for the information |
RIO | Michael Nesmith/Bob Dylan, 1977 | N |
Previously misreported as a collaboration between Bob and Michael Nesmith of the Monkees, released on Michael Nesmith's solo album "From A Radio Engine To The Photon Wing" (Pacific Arts, USA, 1977), and also released as a single. There's a live version on Michael's 1999 Cooking Vinyl album "At The Britt", although the CD release of the original album appears to be out of print. Although RIO was a major hit for him, it isn't on his "Best Of" album! Thanks to Jack from Canada for pointing out that the song is also on the compilation "The Newer Stuff" (Rhino, USA, 1989). Information from Don Wedge: "I'm
currently editing a book of recollections and anecdotes about The Monkees using
both new interviews with The Monkees - except Peter Tork, who won't; talk, that
is. Recently I transcribed a Mike Nesmith radio interview from the mid-80s and
came across this: Thanks to Tim Dunn for the information that there is no mention of Bob anywhere on the original album or in the copyright records. Derek Barker in "Isis" 145 says that Don Wedge was a hoaxer and there was no such radio interview, also his book about The Monkees has never appeared. It therefore seems likely that there was no Dylan involvement in RIO, and this has reportedly been confirmed by Michael Nesmith |
ROCK EM DEAD | Warren Smith, 1986 | L |
Performed with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers in 1986, and also mistitled COME ON OVER AND ROCK EM DEAD, this is based on Warren Smiths URANIUM ROCK, although Clinton Heylin in his book "Still On The Road - The Songs Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2: 1974-2008" (Constable, 2010) thinks it's different enough to be classed as a new song |
ROCKIN' BOAT | 1981 | S |
Recorded during "Shot Of Love" sessions at Cream Studios, Los Angeles, CA, 01 Apr 1981 |
ROCKING CHAIR | 1961 | N? Y |
Lyrics in a manuscript left by Bob at the home of Eve and Mac McKenzie after staying there in Summer 1961 - not the same song as the circulating YOUR ROCKING CHAIR (Bob Dylan/Helena Springs, 1978) |
ROCK ME MAMA | Bob Dylan/Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, 1971 | S |
Out-take from "Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid Original Soundtrack", recorded at Burbank Studios, Los Angeles, CA, February 1973, based on the song by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup. A reworked version of this song called WAGON WHEEL is credited to "Bob Dylan with additional lyrics and melody by Secor" on "OCMS", the 2004 Nettwerk Records album by Old Crow Medicine Show (Ketcham Secor is a band member). This track is published by Blood Donor Music (BMI)/Special Rider Music (SESAC) - Special Rider is Bob's publishing company. The 2007 version by Jason Webley and Reverend Peyton on the 11 Records label (11 Records XI-08, USA, 2007) sticks more closely to the "Pat Garrett" out-take and is credited to just Bob Dylan. Bizarrely it's on a 10-track limited edition (1,111 copies only) bonus CD "2 Bottles Of Wine" given away with a 7" vinyl single! Now also covered by Italian "Cyber-rocker" Michel Montecrossa on his "Michel Montecrossa's Michel & Bob Fest 2008" 6CD/6DVD boxed set (Mira Sound Germany, 2008). Finally released by Bob on "The 50th Anniversary Collection 1973", Dec 2023. Thanks to Tim Dunn, David Plentus and Jack from Canada for copyright and other information |
Michel Montecrossa's Bob Dylan & Michel Fest 2002 6CD set (Mira
Sound Germany, 2002), which contains his cover of ROCKS AND GRAVEL
ROCKS AND GRAVEL | Brownie McGhee/Leroy Carr, 1962 | S L |
Song from the withdrawn version of "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan", recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 01 Nov 1962 (CO76986 - "band" version). see "Searching For A Gem", 1963. An earlier solo version was recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, on 25 Apr 1962 (CO70096). This song was also performed live at various locations in 1962 including the Gaslight Club, New York and the Finjan Club, Montreal (these performances were released on "grey" albums in Europe in the 1980s). On bobdylan.com the lyrics of ROCKS AND GRAVEL are listed here, but there the song has a 1963 copyright to Bob, renewed 1991, although other authorities give the writers as Brownie McGhee and Leroy Carr. Notice the lines later reworked for PHANTOM ENGINEER a.k.a. IT TAKES A LOT TO LAUGH, IT TAKES A TRAIN TO CRY! Also known as SOLID ROAD |
ROCKY FLATS PERIL | Yehudi Ben Israel/Bob Dylan, 1978 | N? |
New words by Yehudi Ben Israel (Leo J. Rosenberg) to Bob Dylan's MASTERS OF WAR! |
ROCKY MOUNTAIN BELLE #2 | 1961 | N? Y |
Lyrics in a manuscript left by Bob at the home of Eve and Mac McKenzie after staying there in Summer 1961 - information from Clinton Heylin's book "Revolution In The Air - The Songs Of Bob Dylan Vol. 1: 1957-73" (Constable, 2009). The song is a variant of ROCKY MOUNTAIN BELLE as sung by Ramblin' Jack Elliott |
ROMANCE BLUES | Bob Dylan/Helena Springs, 1978 or 1979 | N? |
An otherwise unknown song copyrighted in 1980 listed by Tim Dunn in his book "The Bob Dylan Copyright Files 1962-2007" (AuthorHouse, 2008) - a version may exist with vocals by Helena Springs |
ROUND AND ROUND (?) [I SEE YOU ROUND AND ROUND] | Bob Dylan?, 1984 | R |
Rehearsed at the Beverley Theatre, Los
Angeles, CA, 23 May 1984 - not the Chuck Berry song, which Bob has also
performed. Query from Gil Walker: "In his autobiography (which seems
to contain more reliable information on the '84 tour than I've seen
elsewhere) - Ian McLagen reports that Dylan briefly rehearsed a cover
of a "naff" Jimmy Cliff song, at Carlos Santana's
suggestion. Any chance this is it?" Jimmy Cliff does not seem to have recorded or copyrighted a song with this title, but it may not be correct - for example the song listed in Dylan reference works as I'LL BE AROUND is actually called I'M GLAD I GOT TO SEE YOU ONCE AGAIN! Information please! ROUND AND ROUND is a song sung by Lionel Ritchie - is this it? Note to non-British readers: "naff" means "unfashionable, lacking in style", i.e. the opposite of hip or cool. In his book "Still On The Road - The Songs Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2: 1974-2008" (Constable, 2010), Clinton Heylin calls this I SEE YOU ROUND AND ROUND |
ROUND AND ROUND WE GO | 1971 | N? Y |
Six line fragment found in Bob's New York garbage can at the end of 1971 by A.J. Weberman - information from Clinton Heylin's book "Revolution In The Air - The Songs Of Bob Dylan Vol. 1: 1957-73" (Constable, 2009) |
RUN DOWN | Bob Dylan?, 1983 | N? |
Instrumental recorded during the "Infidels" sessions at The Power Station, New York, 11 Apr 1983 - Krogsgaard believes these takes may actually have been rehearsals for BLIND WILLIE MCTELL, released on "The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3" |
RUNNING | 1969 | O |
Recorded at Columbia Studios, Nashville, TN, 26 Apr 1969 (CO99070) for "Self Portrait" but not used, then planned to appear on the 1973 "Dylan" album, but finally dropped. Krogsgaard gives no author information. Peter Stone Brown identified the likely source as the 1956 country song RUNNING AWAY by Floyd Tillman. However, "The 50th Anniversary Collection 1969", released on 6 Dec 2019, includes this performance, now revealed as an unreleased Dylan song, although it is apparently based on the Tillman song |
