WAGON WHEEL | Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup/Bob Dylan/Ketcham Secor, 2001 | S |
Title of reworked version of Bob's version of Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup's ROCK ME MAMA, out-take from "Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid", recorded at Burbank Studios, Los Angeles, CA, Feb 1973. A cover version of this song is credited to "Bob Dylan with additional lyrics and melody by Secor" on "Troubles Up And Down The Road", a 2001 limited edition EP by Old Crow Medicine Show (Ketcham Secor is a band member), and later on "O.C.M.S.", their 2004 Nettwerk Records album . This track is published by Blood Donor Music (BMI)/Special Rider Music (SESAC) - Special Rider is Bob's publishing company. Thanks to Tim Dunn for copyright information. The song has now also been recorded by Against Me! on the charity album "Protect: Benefit For The NAPC" (Fat Wreck Chords, USA, 2005); by Onkel Tims Hütte [Uncle Tim's Cabin], a German band including Searching For A Gem contributor Ronald Born on their 2008 Pool Records Germany album Nearer To The Fire, by The Whiskey River Band on a 2011 single; by Nathan Carter on his 2012 Sharpe Music Ireland album "Wagon Wheel", also released as a single and as the title of his 2013 live show; and by Darius Rucker, former frontman of Hootie and the Blowfish, on his 2013 10 Spot Records US album "True Believers", also released as a single. WAITING FOR THE MORNING LIGHT | Bob Dylan/Gene Simmons, 1996 | N? |
"Billboard" in Jun 2003 revealed that Gene Simmons' first solo record in 25 years would feature songs co-written by Simmons with Bob Dylan and the late Frank Zappa. The album was finally released on 8 Jun 2004 in the USA on Sanctuary Records entitled "A**hole"! The UK promo CD single of WAITING FOR THE MORNING LIGHT from the album is dated "17.05.04" (17 May 2004). The Dylan co-written song, "WAITING FOR THE MORNING LIGHT," was born out of a one-day writing session at Simmons' home in Los Angeles six or seven years ago, the Kiss bassist/vocalist reveals. "Bob came up with the chords, most of them, and then I took it and wrote lyrics, melody, the rest of it," says Simmons, adding that he kept urging Dylan through the years to put lyrics to the song. "I'd see him on tour, and I'd say, 'Bob, you wanna write the song? And he would say, 'No, man, you write it, Mr. Kiss.'" Of the one-day session, Simmons says, "We understood each other right away. He picked up an acoustic guitar, and we just tossed it back and forth, 'How 'bout this, how 'bout that?' And he started to strum, because he -- at least with me -- tended to talk and strum guitar at the same time. And as soon as I heard the first three or four chords, I went, 'Wait, wait, what's that? Do that again.' So I went and started to write a lyric around that." Thanks to Alex Filosa for news that in Jan 2018 Gene Simmons released "The Vault 1966-2016", a collectable model safe full of Simmons memorabilia including 10CDs plus a bonus CD, with a longer version of WAITING FOR THE MORNING LIGHT on CD6. CD5 contains two more Dylan/Simmons co-compositions, NA, NA, NA, NA and EVERYBODY WANTS SOMEBODY, plus a 15:40 track called "BOB DYLAN WRITING SESSION". Each safe costs $2000 and will be hand-delivered to the buyer by Gene Simmons himself! (Presumably just in the continental USA.) For a 1991 song co-written by Bob and Gene Simmons see LAUGHING WHEN YOU WANT TO CRY. Tim Dunn says: Just received the new April 2018 issue of "Goldmine" magazine with an interview with Gene Simmons. He discusses working with Dylan and mentions their writing session, which lasted 6 or 7 hours. Three tracks on "The Vault" involve Dylan, apparently NA, NA, NA, NA, EVERYBODY WANTS SOMEBODY and WAITING FOR THE MORNING LIGHT. Simmons says that Dylan wouldn't finish the lyrics "so eventually I just sat down and wrote the lyric and found variations of that which became two other songs... NA, NA, NA, NA has that title because I couldn't come up with a chorus lyric, and WAITING FOR THE MORNING LIGHT and EVERYBODY WANTS SOMEBODY were other variations." He adds "Bob came up with some chords that I liked a lot, and I started humming a melody...riffing back and forth...just outlined a few variations...So over the years, I tried to get him to write the lyric...'No, Mr. Kiss, you write it'." One version of WAITING FOR THE MORNING LIGHT is on his album "A*hole". None are in the Copyright Office records as of today. |

WALK DOWN CROOKED HIGHWAY | 1964 | N? Y |
Copyrighted Nov 1964 and lyrics published in the New York folk magazine "Sing Out!" Jan 1965, but there is no record of any studio or live performances. Stephan Pickering says this was in fact a prose piece called "Condensed from 'Walk Down Crooked Highway'" above the lyrics for ALL I REALLY WANT TO DO (pp. 32-33). The piece itself was part of the growing manuscript of what was then called "Tarantula Meets Rex Paste", but, along with several other pieces, was not included in the final Macmillan version of "Tarantula". |

WANTED MAN | 1969 | O |
Recorded
with Johnny Cash at Columbia Studios, Nashville, TN, 18 Feb 1969 - lyrics on
bobdylan.com are here. Paul Cable reported in his book "Bob Dylan:

Pickering claimed to have a tape of Bob's demo of this
song. First performed live by Johnny Cash on his "Johnny Cash At San Quentin" album, this version also appears on the soundtrack album of the 1970 film "Little Fauss and Big Halsy". Also available are covers by George Thorogood and the Destroyers on their 1982 Capitol album "Bad To The Bone" (also compiled on "The Songs Of Bob Dylan", Start Records, UK, 1989), Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds on their 1985 Mute album "The First-Born Is Dead" and by Michel Montecrossa on his 6CD Mira Sound Germany set "Bob Dylan Fest 2001", see D page for details. WELL, WELL, WELL | Bob Dylan/Danny O'Keefe, 1993 | N? |
Although he has
never recorded it in the studio, WELL, WELL, WELL was first performed live by Don
Henley at the Walden Woods Benefit, Foxboro, MA, 6 Sep 1993, and
broadcast by Westwood One as part of their "Superstars In Concert"
series, show #93-43, in the week of 18 Oct 1993. Thanks to Tim Dunn for
information. The first release on CD was by
David Lindley and Hani Naser on their album "Playing Even
Better" (Pleemhead 75676-2, 1995), followed by an outing on Maria Muldaur's
"Fanning The Flames" album (Telarc Blues CD 83394,
US, 1996, also on
her compilation "I'm A Woman: 30 Years Of Maria Muldaur" (Shout!
Factory DK-301219/Rhino OPCD-7614, US, 2004).
Gil Walker says: "The guy I heard about the song from is also a film/music critic for a local group of weekly newspapers; he told me he asked Maria about the song at a recent club appearance, and she told him, that, as far as she knew, no one else had released a version of the song. Where did she get it? She said she just called up Dylan one day and asked him if he had anything on hand she could put on her new record - so he sent it to her! Unfortunately, she didn't say (or John didn't ask) whether she got sheet music, a Dylan demo, or something else to work from." Thanks to Hans Marijnissen for the information that the lyrics are at Danny O'Keefe's web-site , and thanks to Gil Walker for this quote about the song from Danny O'Keefe's web-site explaining Maria's source: "I used to work for Bob Dylan's publishing company, Special Rider Music, and Bob sent me a demo tape and requested that I write lyrics to the song. I arranged the song and wrote the lyrics that you have below. David Lindley heard the song on a demo tape I sent him and recorded the song. Maria Muldaur and Mavis Staples also have a version of the song together. I think the meaning is fairly plain: poison the sources of water and we are all effected. Water is the life of the planet, as is the air, the earth and the fire within." Maria therefore received the song on the demo tape mentioned above performed by co-writer Danny O'Keefe, not Bob, so there is no circulating Dylan version. Danny O'Keefe released his own version in February 2000, on his album "Running From The Devil" (Miramar 090006-23148-2), its first appearance from one of its writers, and which also appears on his Australian Raven Records compilation "Danny's Best 1970-2000 - Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues" (Raven Records WWRAV 71098, Australia, 2005). Maria has also covered the unreleased Dylan song AIN'T NO MAN RIGHTEOUS, NO NOT ONE. David Lindley re-recorded the song with Wally Ingram on their September 1998 album "Twango Bango Deluxe" (Ulftone UTCD-003) and it has also been covered by Steve Howe with P.P. Arnold as guest vocalist on his Jun 1999 album "Portraits Of Bob Dylan" (Eagle Records, UK/Purple Pyramid CLP 0600-2, US). Also covered by Michel Montecrossa on his 2011 Mira Sound Germany 2CD set "Something That Counts: Climate Change Acoustic Concert - Michel & Bob Dylan Fest 2011", which also contains covers of COVER DOWN, BREAK THROUGH, GET YOUR ROCKS OFF and YOUVE BEEN HIDING TOO LONG. WHATS NEWS, PUSSYCAT? | Bob Dylan/George Robinson/Joey Kneen, 1966 | N? |
This song on the B-side of the 7" mono single by the Merseybeat group The Cryin' Shames produced by Joe Meek is Bob's ON THE ROAD AGAIN from "Bringing It All Back Home" with new words by bass player George Robinson. It is credited to "Kneen, Robinson" on the original single (Joey Kneen was the band's vocalist.). Robinson says: "I wrote the B-side of PLEASE STAY, WHAT'S NEWS, PUSSYCAT?. That is definitely mine, although I am now forced to share composer rights with Bob Dylan ( I ripped off the tune of ON THE ROAD AGAIN). I don't mind that! Apparently it is still getting plays on American TV stations, calling it 'Freakbeat'." (PLEASE STAY was co-written by Burt Bacharach, as was WHAT'S NEW, PUSSYCAT?, the 1965 film theme song performed by Tom Jones.) The song can also be found on two UK CD compilations: "Telstar: The Hits Of Joe Meek" (Castle, 2005) and "Joe Meek Freakbeat: You're Holding Me Down - 30 Freakbeat, Mod & R&B Nuggets" (Sanctuary, 2008).
