LAUGHING WHEN YOU WANT TO CRY | Bob Dylan/Gene Simmons, 1991 | D |
Song co-written with Gene Simmons of Kiss, who said when interviewed in 1996: "Bob Dylan and I wrote a tune together, which has yet to come out, which we have yet to completely finish, although it's been demoed already. I wrote a lyric for it called LAUGHING WHEN YOU WANT TO CRY. But certainly when I sat in the same room with him in my guest house, 'cause he came to my house to write this tune, you're aware of people that have been here before you, who have made their mark while I was still in diapers. This is the king of lyrics. For me to sit in the same room and be treated as an equal is the highest honor. Then to find out one of the girls in his band, Scarlet Rivera, who I used to see for awhile, she knew nothing about the band when we first started out. I told her we wear makeup and she went back and told Bob and for a while he started wearing whiteface. KISS! Been there, done it, bought the T-shirt." Other sources date this collaboration as being from just before the time Kiss released their "Revenge" album in 1992. There's no other information about who actually recorded the demo mentioned. Thanks to Gil Walker for the information. Thanks to Alex Filosa for news that in Jan 2018 Gene Simmons released "The Vault 1966-2016", a collectable model safe full of Simmons memorabilia including 10CDs plus a bonus CD, including three co-compositions with Bob Dylan on CDs 5 and 6 - EVERYBODY WANTS SOMEBODY, NA, NA, NA, NA and WAITING FOR THE MORNING LIGHT, the last of which was previously released in a shorter version in 2004 on Gene's solo Sanctuary Records album entitled "A**hole". CD5 also contains a 15:40 track called "BOB DYLAN WRITING SESSION". Each safe costs $2000 and will be hand-delivered to the buyer by Gene Simmons himself! (Presumably just in the continental USA.) LAUGHING WHEN YOU WANT TO CRY is not included! |

LISTEN, ROBERT MOSES | 1961 | N? |
Thanks to "Isis" 181 for information that a Harvard Graduate School of Design essay published in 2010 stated that Bob wrote this song for activist Jane Jacobs in the early 1960s to support her campaign to get Robert Moses, designer of the planned Lower Manhattan Expressway (LOMEX), to drop the project, which would have levelled fourteen city blocks in Little Italy and displaced almost 2,000 families and 800 businesses. A plan to build the roadway, originally conceived in 1941, was set in motion in 1961, and again in 1965 and 1968, but has so far been blocked successfully. The lyrics are said to be in the Tuli Kupferberg collection of the Fales Library of New York University, and were published by the New York web-site "The Gothamist" on 26 Jun 2015. Thanks to Ben Ross for information that John Cohen of The New Lost City Ramblers says that this was probably sung to the tune of LISTEN MISTER BILBO, the song written in 1946 by Bob and Adrienne Claiborne satirising Mississippi Democrat US Senator Theodore Gilmore Bilbo (1877-1947), an man of outspoken racist views. The song has been recorded by Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, etc. John Cohen says: Although I never heard of this song before, it seems totally possible that Bob wrote it .He was living in the middle of the Village back then.. and responding to what was around him... And his girlfriend Suze Rotolo was an activist, and eventually a great advocate of the Village. The first line is the clue to the form, structure and possible melody of the song. Look in the "Peoples Songbook" for the song LISTEN MISTER BILBO. The opening line goes "Listen Mister Bilbo, Listen to me, I'll give you a lesson in history, listen while I tell you that the foreigners you hate, are the very same people made America great." The story of Jane Jacob's fight against LOMEX is told in a 2010 book by Roberta Brandes Gratz: "The Battle for Gotham: New York in the Shadow of Robert Moses and Jane Jacobs" (Nation Books, USA) |

LONG DISTANCE OPERATOR | 1965 | L |
Performed live by Bob and The Hawks (later The Band) in late 1965. There is only one confirmed performance, at Berkeley, CA, on 04 Dec 1965, but it may have been played at other shows in this tour, notably Chicago, IL, 26 Nov 1965 (perhaps its live debut). Thanks to Bob Stacy who writes: "In the "Chicago Tribune", 27 Nov 65 (the day following the show at Aire Crown Theater, 26 Nov 65), the reviewer Bruce Plowman noted, "Dylan introduced a new song last night, one which he wrote, called 'Long Distance Operator'." Also, someone who attended the show at San José, CA, 12 Dec 1965, remembers hearing the song. No studio version is known. The song is on the Columbia "Basement Tapes" album, but in a cover version by The Band. The lyrics are still on bobdylan.com here. Thanks to Tim Dunn for the information that the song first appeared on the album by the James Cotton Blues Band "Taking Care Of Business" (Capitol SM-814, USA, 1970) and to David Plentus for telling me that it can also be found on the 2CD compilation "Chicago Blues Masters Vol. 3" (Capitol 36288, USA, 1997). Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for pointing out that the version of Long Distance Operator (4:32) on the 2005 boxed set "The Band - A Musical History" (Capitol 72435-77409-6, USA, 2005) is listed as previously unreleased and recorded at Goldstar Studios, Los Angeles, CA, 21 Feb 1968. The so-called Basement Tapes version is 3:40, but the new performance is in fact the same recording with an edited verse restored. (It is actually well known that not all the tracks by The Band included on The Basement Tapes album were versions that were actually recorded there!) The live performance from Berkeley is now officially released on the 208 track download set 50th Anniversary Collection 1965, Columbia/Legacy (USA), 4 Dec 2015 (R-1645, see 2015) |
A LONG HAIRED MULE AND A PORKEPINE | 1966 | O |

LONG TIME GONE | 1962 | O |
Performed for home recordings in Minnesota and New York from August 1962, and later as a Witmark demo at Witmark offices, New York, March 1963. This song was included on the Warner Bros Publisher's Sampler LP XTD 221567 (see "Searching For A Gem", 1967). Available as a cover by Odetta on her album "Odetta Sings Dylan" (RCA Victor LSP-3324/LSM-3324, US, 1963, stereo/mono) along with LONG AGO, FAR AWAY above, and by Hamilton Camp on his "Paths Of Victory" album along with GUESS I'M DOIN' FINE (see the "G" page for a picture of the album). Thanks to Dr Hanns Peter Bushoff for masterminding the 2000 German CD release and for the copy of the album. Thanks also to Tim Dunn for pointing out that on the latest CD release of this album the song title is incorrectly shown as "LONG TIME AGO" on the rear insert and the CD itself. It's correctly titled in the historical notes and reproduction of the LP back cover in the CD booklet. Thanks also to Rich Lerner for the copy of his album. LONG TIME GONE was officially released on "The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964" in Oct 2010 |

LOOK YONDER | Bob Dylan?, 1984 | N? |
Song recorded at Cherokee Studios, Hollywood, CA, 6 & 7 Dec 1984, during the "Empire Burlesque" sessions. It's possible it could be Elmore James' LOOK ON YONDER WALL, although Clinton Heylin in his book "Still On The Road - The Songs Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2: 1974-2008" (Constable, 2010) thinks not |
