"The Traveling Wilburys Collection" - Deluxe boxed set (2CD+DVD+book), Rhino R2 167868 (USA/Canada/Europe),
12 Jun 2007; Rhino WPZR 30237-9 (Japan), 25 Jul 2007:
Thanks to Miss Taylor Long of Special Ops Media, New York, for the press
photographs.
Rhino R2 167868 (USA) - Deluxe set, scan by Gerd Rundel (First edition, white linen-covered slipcase) |
Thanks to Harold Lepidus and Jean-Pol Hiernaux for information that the two Traveling Wilburys albums were re-released in a set by Rhino in the USA on 12 Jun 2007. 1988's Volume One adds the previously unreleased 1990 tracks Maxine and Like A Ship, up to now listed in my Starlight In The East: Bob Dylans Unreleased Songs, 1990's Volume Three adds Nobody's Child from the 1990 Romanian Orphan Appeal album and a song previously only available on 1990 singles, the Del Shannon cover Runaway. The set is available in a standard digipak edition and a deluxe boxed edition, both including a DVD with a 24 min documentary and the five Wilburys music videos. The standard edition includes the three discs in a three-fold digipak with a booklet. |
Rhino R2 167868 (USA) - Deluxe set, scan by Jack from Canada (Second Edition, blue linen-covered slipcase) |
The deluxe edition includes the three discs in a two-fold digipak in a linen slipcase plus a book and an envelope containing four exclusive photographs, a Limited Edition Certificate (up to 100,000 as far as I know) and a sticker (just the Wilburys logo as shown here but on a black background). There is also a vinyl edition released in Jul 2007 and the tracks are available for download. European and Canadian copies are shown so far, I understand the only difference in the USA release is the FBI Anti-Piracy logo on the rear of the digipak and the discs. Thanks to Tjeerd Timmerman for scans of a promo "Watermarked" CD-R release which contains only the two audio discs, not the DVD. Thanks to Jack from Canada for scans of the second edition of the Limited Deluxe Edition, which has a blue slipcase instead of white, with "Second Edition" on the spine. His limited edition certificate is number 105,618, which implies that numbering started at 100,001 (after the 100,000 of the first "limited" edition).

It was previously reported that before his death in 2001 George Harrison was working on a Wilburys anthology to be called Maximum Traveling which would have contained three unreleased tracks recorded by the Wilburys with Del Shannon, although there seem now to be no plans to release these. |

The European Deluxe Edition uses the American slipcase with a card inside the shrink-wrap covering the back and top. The bonus book is reversible - the side shown has the title "THE TRUE HISTORY OF THE TRAVELING WILBURYS" (the text is actually the spoof biographies from the original album liner notes). The reverse side is called just "THE HISTORY OF THE TRAVELING WILBURYS" and has the actual story of how the albums came to be made.
Thanks to Harold Lepidus for news that Rhino Records in the USA are releasing the two Traveling Wilburys albums from this 2007 set as separate albums on 3 Jun 2008. As in this 2007 release, Traveling Wilburys Volume One will include the two bonus tracks Like A Ship and Maxine, while Traveling Wilburys Volume Three will include the two bonus tracks Nobody's Child and Runaway. For more details, see . These two albums have now been added to 2008.

Wil Gielen says: "The design is actually a ‘replica’ of a similar vinyl release (same artwork etc) that came out in Japan in the mid/late 70’s – it was a compliation album (regular shop release, not promo only) with the same artwork and I think also a mix of artists from different labels. (The original LP did not have any Bob Dylan related tracks though). It was popular because there were so many songs, for the price (it was priced lower than normal LPs of the time). I think that some record company staff must have remembered this release from when they were young, and wanted to try to ‘replicate’ it (this time only as a promo only release, there is no commercial release) with the same artwork. It’s very unusual for record companies to make joint releases, maybe this was to help keep the costs of manufacture and distribution to a minimum. But this is only a guess, I don’t have any information about this.
This is a promo only item and surprisingly there is a red/white promo issue sticker on the rear of the mini LP box. For the promo sticker, it is very unusual for a promo only – although sometimes you see the same stickers on promo only CDs on the Warner or East/West labels so it does happen sometimes. I guess this time, since it was such a deluxe set, it was probably only sent to a limited number of people and the record company wanted to keep a record of who received each copy (so the sticker has a serial number to trace the owner)".
Thanks to Wil Gielen for information and scans.
