The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964
This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. This set is actually in mono, but it's included here because it has been added to the bobdylan.com albums page! They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. |

The following Witmark demos have been officially released on regular albums:
The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 [Rare And Unreleased]
1961-1991 (1991): The Times They Are A-Changin';
When The Ship Comes In; Walkin' Down The Line (but see below)
The Bootleg Series Vol. 7 - No Direction Home: The Soundtrack
(2005): Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right
Thanks to Martin Andrzejewski for some observations on Walking Down The Line on Bootleg Series Vol. 9, confirmed by Ian Woodward: "On The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 Walking Down The Line is asterisked and indicated as previously released on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3, which is true but not quite.
First of all, the The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 track misses the first 35 or so seconds (compared with the 3 LP vinyl bootleg I found on my shelf). These 30 seconds contain a guitar doodling, Bob asking "right now?" and a lengthy harp intro. Then, on the boot, Bob starts singing: "Well I'm walking down the line", whereas on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 the first line beginning with "Lord I'm walking down the line", a phrase which is obviously picked and inserted here from a later verse.
The reason seems to be that the beginning of the original song has some background noises. Just like some blasts of wind hit the microphone through an open window or whatever it really is. This noise can be heard into the second harp solo, just before Bob starts to sing: "Got a heavy headed gal". It seem like they copied a later "Walking Down The Line" verse including part or whole of the following harp solo to solve the noise problem.
Right now, on The Bootleg Series Vol. 9, the song starts at its original beginning but is nevertheless tampered with because the background noise stops after Bob sang "Well I'm Walking Down The Line - I'm Walking Down The Line". To me it sounds as if the song has now its original beginning, but then it is melted as early as possible with the The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 version, to get rid of the background noise. That means, that we probably have a copy and paste part between second 40 and second 56."
One performance has been released on a limited edition of a regular album:

Columbia/Legacy 88697 76179 2 (Australia) - front of slipcase with sticker, scan by Stuart Moore |
I've received scans of two copies of this release, one bought in Australia from Stuart Moore, and one bought in New Zealand from Bill Hester, and they both look as if they could actually be the US release. There is no indication of country of origin on the packaging or the discs, unlike the bonus mono CD Bob Dylan In Concert: Brandeis University 1963 (see 2010), which is identified as being from Australia on both the card sleeve and the disc. As they don't have the Sony Music logo, again unlike the Australian Brandeis disc, I therefore suspect these copies were actually sourced from the USA. Bill Hester also tells me the set is being sold in New Zealand without the slipcase and the booklet! This set has catalogue number Columbia/Legacy 88697 80600 2. |

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for information and scans of the commercial release. The Japanese release comes in a slipcase with a wraparound obi and a front silver foil sticker advertising the CD Bob Dylan In Concert: Brandeis University 1963 (see 2010). In the package is a voucher to send off for the Brandeis CD as in The Original Mono Recordings (Sony Music SICP 2951-59, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s). There are two booklets, one in English and one in Japanese. Otherwise the packaging and disc design are similar to the European release. Thanks to Arie de Reus for information that the Japanese Brandeis concert CD will be shipped in Feb 2011 to Japanese addresses only (no international shipping). Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for information it actually arrived on 5 Mar 2011!
