By popular request, an extracted list from Searching For A Gem of promo or commercially-released tracks on Dylan releases from Columbia that are not available on Dylan albums in the USA. It makes up an interesting list! It was formerly presented as a "fantasy" compilation album, in an attempt to coax Columbia into releasing a Rarities Album, but I've abandoned that concept as some found it confusing. I still want it to happen, although it obviously couldn't be part of The Bootleg Series as all tracks have already been officially released.

This list doesn't include tracks from:

50th Anniversary Collection 1962 (2012)

50th Anniversary Collection 1963 (2013)

50th Anniversary Collection 1964 (2014)

50th Anniversary Collection 1965 (2015)*

The 1966 Live Recordings (2016)

Bob Dylan Live 1962-1966: Rare Performances From The Copyright Collections (2018)

The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1975 Live Recordings (2019)

50th Anniversary Collection 1969 (2019)

*The 50th Anniversary Collection 1965 set consists entirely of live tracks, see Early Field Recordings.

Revised: 07 January, 2024

These tracks are all from commercially-released albums and singles. They exclude live performances, which are here (1961-87) and here (1988 onwards).

Non-Album Dylan Compositions on 7" Stereo Singles

Only three officially-released Dylan songs from singles are not available on his regular albums, all from the 1970s! Positively 4th Street and Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? from the 1960s have not appeared on regular albums, but have since been released on Dylan compilations listed in International Album Releases (Regular).

R-0084 George Jackson - "Big Band" version from 1971 single

R-0085 George Jackson - Acoustic version from 1971 single

Both of these tracks have appeared on LP and CD compilations, for full details again see 1971.

CBS4859FR2.jpg (30458 bytes) R-0130 Rita May - Desire out-take, A- and B-side of the Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again single from Hard Rain, see 1976 and 1977

This has also appeared on the 1978 CBS/Sony Japan and CBS Australia 3LP set Masterpieces, see 1978

R-0149 Trouble In Mind - Slow Train Coming out-take (4:17), B-side of 1979 singles with one verse omitted, the three international A-sides were Gotta Serve Somebody, Precious Angel and Man Gave Names To All The Animals

R-0150 Trouble In Mind - B-side of a 1979 Brazilian single, Slow Train Coming out-take (5:13) - this release with Precious Angel as the A-side reportedly had the full song unlike the versions released elsewhere, although I have never seen hard evidence for it.
For both of these see 1979. The Brazilian single may never have existed, but R-0150, the complete version of this rarity, has now been released on Pure Dylan: An Intimate Look At Bob Dylan, Sony Music Germany 2011, see below

Trouble In Mind Take 1, recorded Muscle Shoals Studio, Sheffield, AL, 30 Apr 1979) (4:50) was released in 2017 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 13 - Trouble No More 1979-1981 (Deluxe Edition). The B-sides of the 1979 Columbia 7" singles, either with one verse omitted (R-0149, 4:17) or in full (R-0150, 5:13) both remain rarities.
