The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 - Bob Dylan 1965-1966 The Cutting Edge
This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. |

Revised 07 January, 2024.
Thanks to Tim Dunn for information that The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 - Bob Dylan 1965-1966 The Cutting Edge will be released on 6 Nov 2015 in the USA and Europe, and on 18 Nov 2015 in Japan. This will be available in four formats: a 2CD set, a 3LP set, an expanded 6CD set, and a massive 18CD set that will include amongst other things all the sessions for Like A Rolling Stone, some of which were previously released in 1995 on the Highway 61 Interactive CD-ROM. |
|
The 18CD boxed set, which is available from bobdylan.com in the USA only, also includes nine vinyl 7" mono singles from 1965-66 in new picture sleeves.
Thanks to Harald Sigvartsen for pointing out that the picture on page 46 of the booklet of 2005's The Bootleg Series Vol. 7: No Direction Home - The Soundtrack is the one used for the front of all versions of this release in Nov 2015.
I have now updated the Official Rarities listings with all the tracks that are released in these sets. Previous rarities now released on the 2CD and 6CD sets are classed as officially released, but previous rarities released only on the 18CD set remain rarities! With the possible exception of the hotel room tracks on CD18 of the Collector's Edition, all the tracks on these three editions have been remixed in stereo from the original master tapes. These are reportedly in superb quality and much more "natural" to modern ears than the sometimes artificial 1960s stereo mixes. As Ben Rollins says in the book with the 18CD set: "released masters have been remixed in order to fit the sound of the way these alternate takes are presented... raw, immediate, unvarnished, unpolished" (thanks to T J Young for the quote).
The various stereo versions of the three 1965-66 albums are:
Bringing It All Back Home: the original 1965 stereo mix, original 1987 CD mix; 2003 SA-CD stereo mix by Greg Calbi, 2003 SA-CD 5.1 mix by Michael Brauer; 2013 SA-CD stereo remix by Michael Brauer.
The current CD release contains the CD layer of the 2003 hybrid SA-CD release mixed by Greg Calbi. The remastered stereo versions of the 1965 album tracks occur on the 18CD set as follows:
Subterranean Homesick Blues (CD1, track 24); She Belongs To Me (CD2, track 2); Maggie's Farm (CD2, track 9); Love Minus Zero/No Limit (CD1, track 20); Outlaw Blues (CD1, track 27); On The Road Again (CD2, track 16); Gates Of Eden (CD2, track 19); Mr. Tambourine Man (CD2, track 23); It’s All Right, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding) (CD2, track 18); It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue (CD2, track 24); Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream (intro with laughing - CD1, track 5, complete take - CD2, track 4).
Highway 61 Revisited: the Witmark "Rough Mix" tape, the original 1965 stereo mix, original 1987 CD mixes worldwide; the 1992 gold CD stereo mix by Steve Hoffman, 2003 SA-CD stereo mix by Greg Calbi, 2003 SA-CD 5.1 mix by Greg Calbi.
The current CD release contains the CD layer of the 2003 hybrid SA-CD release mixed by Greg Calbi. The remastered stereo versions of the 1965 album tracks occur on the 18CD set as follows:
Like A Rolling Stone (CD4, track 4); Tombstone Blues (CD5, track 11); It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry (CD5, track 15); From A Buick Six (CD6, track 5); Ballad Of A Thin Man (CD7, track 19); Queen Jane Approximately (CD7, track 16); Highway 61 Revisited (CD6, track 29); Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues (CD7, track 9); Desolation Row (CD8, track 11).
Blonde On Blonde: According to Roger Ford the different stereo mixes of this album are: US 1966 original stereo mix; US revised stereo mix introduced in 1968; original 1987 CD mixes worldwide (abridged 1, abridged 2 and full-length) by Tim Geelan; 1992 gold CD mix by Mark Wilder; 1999 SA-CD stereo mix by Michael Brauer (also used on the 2003 hybrid SA-CD release); 2003 SA-CD 5.1 mix by Michael Brauer (from the 2003 hybrid SA-CD release).
The current CD release contains the CD layer of the 2003 hybrid SA-CD release, the same mix as the 1999 SA-CD stereo mix by Michael Brauer. The remastered stereo versions of the 1966 album tracks occur on the 18CD set as follows:
Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 (CD16, track 20); Pledging My Time (CD15, track 15); Visions of Johanna (CD13, track 10); One Of Us Must Know (Sooner Or Later) (CD12, track 2); I Want You (CD17, track 11); Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again (CD15, track 2); Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat (CD17, track 5); Just Like A Woman (CD16, track 8); Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine) (CD16, track 14); Temporary Like Achilles (CD16, track 18); Absolutely Sweet Marie (CD15, track 6); Fourth Time Around (CD13, track 6); Obviously Five Believers (CD17, track 4); Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands (CD14, track 4).

Thanks to Brian Grist for information that in Robbie Robertson's newly published autobiography "Testimony" he writes of recording Tell Me Momma at the same session (21 Jan 1966) as She's Your Lover Now, yet no evidence of such a recording has yet come to light. On page 207 he states: "We rambled through a song called She's Your Lover Now. Then another new tune, Tell Me, Momma, with its salty punch line- "Baby, tell me, what's wrong with you this time?''" Is the author mistaken or did Dylan and The Hawks work on it in the studio that day when the tapes were not rolling? If they did record it, why no sight of it on The Cutting Edge? (Only live versions of Tell Me, Momma are known to exist, all now found on the Columbia/Legacy 36CD set The 1966 Live Recordings, 2016.)

Thanks to Stephan Pickering for information this is
not the original Take 4, which appeared exclusively on the Canadian mono
pressing of Blonde On Blonde. On the original Take 4 Bob makes a vocal
slip that's been rectified on all other releases of the album. At the end of the
fourth verse he sings "how could they ever have...uh...'suaded you". This was
corrected by a splicing from Take 1, "how [could they ever have persuaded] you".
This track includes the splice!

There have been complaints on Facebook about a glaring omission from the 18CD set - the session recorded at Levy's Studio, London, 12 May 1965, with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. The only excerpt which has ever surfaced is the Miami Sales Convention Message snippet of If You Gotta Go, Go Now (R-0042, see 1965). John Mayall now lives in California, but he is originally from Macclesfield and attended the prestigious King’s School here. I've now been told the tapes from this session are not part of the Dylan Archive. They are not listed by Michael Krogsgaard's "The Bob Dylan Recording Sessions", but the excerpt is listed in his "Master of the Tracks" book. Clinton Heylin reports that the results were unusable because too much wine was consumed! Also, where is Church With No Upstairs, rumoured to have been recorded with The Hawks in 1965? I assume it's here, but under a different name. According to Tim Dunn's The Bob Dylan Copyright Files, Bob copyrighted Church With No Upstairs in 1988 as part of the Dwarf Music catalogue, along with the instrumental Number One.
The tapes for the session listed by Michael Krogsgaard that took place on 14 Jan 1965 from 7-10 p.m. including John Hammond on guitar and John Sebastian on bass guitar have also not been found. The songs listed as having been recorded then are: Love Minus Zero/No Limit (CO85270); I'll Keep It With Mine (CO85271); It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (CO85272), Bob Dylan's 115th Dream (CO85273); She Belongs To Me (CO85274); Subterranean Homesick Blues (CO85275).

The tracklist is the same as the 2CD release below. This 3LP set was released in North America and Europe only. Each set comes in a 12" x 12" card slipcase that holds all three discs plus a 12" booklet. Each record comes in a picture outer sleeve with a cut-out centre and a plain coloured inner sleeve that also has a cut-out centre. The only text on each inner sleeve is the catalogue number plus "SV1/2/3" printed vertically at front bottom right.
The sleeve and record label designs are based on Dylan Columbia and CBS 7" single releases from 1965-66. (Sergio Mariano Romay is particularly pleased that the labels of Record 2 are based on the Argentinean promo releases of the time.) This release also contains 2CDs with different catalogue numbers from those of the 2CD release below. The CDs come in card sleeves which are based on Dylan CBS 7" EP releases from 1965-66. The US release was added to this page after the European release, so the booklet and sleeve scans are not repeated and are shown below.
The records of the US release have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 88875124431-A 24359.1(3), Side 2 - 88875124431-B 423 24359.2(3), Side 3 - 88875124431-C 24359.3(3), Side 4 - 88875124431-D 24359.4(3), Side 5 - 88875124431-E 24359.5(3), Side 6 - 88875124431-F 24359.6(3). Each side has also stamped “STERLING” and handwritten “RKS” in the vinyl (this means it was mastered at Sterling Sound, Edgewater, NJ, by senior engineer Ryan K. Smith).

These are not the same as the US matrix numbers, but each side again has also stamped “STERLING” and handwritten “RKS” in the vinyl as the US records.

Collector's Edition 18CD Release
"The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 - Bob Dylan 1965-1966 The Cutting Edge Collector's Edition" - 18CD set, Columbia/Legacy 8887512440211 (USA), 6 Nov 2015:
Columbia/Legacy 8887512440211 (USA) - photo from bobdylan.com |
The 18CD Collector's Edition cost $599.95, and was only available from bobdylan.com in the USA, who accepted worldwide orders! The release was limited to 5,000 copies and was sold out in Jan 2016. Buyers from outside the USA had to pay shipping, import duty and VAT! Each copy had a numbered Certificate of Authenticity - mine is 2262/5000. Todd N has a copy where the certificate does not have a number but instead has the text "MANUFACTURER PROOF - NOT FOR RESALE". This is the only copy I know without a number, but it appears genuine in all respects as everything in the package is present. |

Purchase of the 18CD set also includes a link for a digital download in various formats. The discs are numbered "88875124402D1" to "88875124402D18", and use the design of 1960s Columbia Special Products Limited Edition record labels. CDs 1 to 17 are olive, black and white with alternating designs, but CD18 is red, black and white.
All tracks listed above that are exclusive to this set are rarities and are listed in 2015.
Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for information that 100 copies of the 18CD set (all sold out) were imported into Japan for a cost of ¥95,000 including 8% sales tax, shipped on 18 Nov 2015.

This May/Jun 1965 single is missing from the set, maybe because it was not released in the USA. The UK single did not have a picture sleeve.

Front of German sleeve (my copy) |
Two
singles were also released in Germany and the UK in Nov 2015 with an alternate take of
Like A Rolling Stone and front sleeves based on the 1965
Danish
single release CBS 201.811. The front photos are
different from the photo on the front of the single in the box! The German single, exclusive to the Nov 2015 edition of the German "Rolling Stone" magazine, contains an alternate take of Like A Rolling Stone and a piano demo of Desolation Row. They are tracks 15 and 18 of CD1 of the 2CD set The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 - Bob Dylan 1965-1966 The Best Of The Cutting Edge. |
Front of UK sleeve with £4.99 HMV store sticker (my copy) |
The UK single, exclusive to HMV and costing £4.99, contains the same alternate take of Like A Rolling Stone and a solo acoustic version of She Belongs To Me. The B-side is track 4 of CD1 of the 2CD set The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 - Bob Dylan 1965-1966 The Best Of The Cutting Edge.
For both of these Nov 2015 singles, see International Singles: All Formats 2010s.

Columbia/Legacy 88875124402-SV3 (USA) - front (my copy) |
Columbia 4-43389 from Sep 1965 is included as Columbia/Legacy 88875124402-(SV)3 with the US commercial single labels. The front is from the Danish single release CBS 201.824 and the rear is similar to that of the 1966 French EP release CBS EP 6270, although the pictures are in colour, not monochrome. |

Columbia/Legacy 88875124402-SV4 (USA) - front (my copy) |
Columbia 4-43477 from Jan 1966 is included as Columbia/Legacy 88875124402-(SV)4 with the US commercial single labels. The front is from the Italian single release CBS 1900 but the rear is modelled on the rear of the US album Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits. |

|
Columbia/Legacy 88875124402-4 (USA) - B-side with title mistake |
Thanks to Fred Muller for spotting that the B-side record label of the Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?/Highway 61 Revisited single lists the song title wrongly as "Highway 61". The sleeve of this single implies that Highway 61 Revisited is the A-side but Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? is this single's A-side, although Highway 61 Revisited was the A-side of the original Italian single.
For the original 1966 singles, see 1966. The stereo version of Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?, officially unreleased until this set, remains a rarity!
For some reason, singles 5-9 no longer have the original Columbia US catalogue number on the labels.

CBS LL-919-C (Japan) - front scan by Hans Seegers (1966) |
|
|
|
Columbia/Legacy 88875124402-5 (USA) - B-side |
Columbia 4-43541 from Feb 1966 is included as Columbia/Legacy 88875124402-(SV)5 with the US promo single white labels (although the equivalent 1966 white label promo single had red text, not black). The front is from the Japanese single release CBS LL-919-C, but the rear is a curious hybrid of Japanese and German singles ("CBS Liner No. 16"). Illustrated are a Dutch 1966 single rear ("CBS Benelux Liner No. 16") with six of the same nine CBS single sleeves shown and a collage of those actual nine West German CBS singles.
For the original 1966 singles, see 1966. The unfaded mono version of One Of Us Must Know (Sooner Or Later) was a rarity until the mono Blonde On Blonde album was released on 2CDs as part of the Oct 2010 9CD release The Original Mono Recordings.
"Rainy Day Women #12 & 35"/"Pledging My Time" - Columbia/Legacy 88875124402-(SV)6 (USA):
Columbia/Legacy 88875124402-SV6 (USA) - front (my copy) |
Columbia 4-43592 from Apr 1966 is included as Columbia/Legacy 88875124402-(SV)6 with the US commercial single labels. The front and rear are from the 1966 Italian single release CBS 2307. |

The A-side is a 2:26 edit of the 4:35 album track (listed on the 2015 single as 2:25), and the B-side is a 2:06 edit of the 3:48 album track. For the original 1966 singles, see 1966.
"I Want You"/"Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues (live)" - Columbia/Legacy 88875124402-(SV)7 (USA):
Columbia/Legacy 88875124402-SV7 (USA) - front (my copy) |
Columbia 4-43683 from Jun 1966 is included as Columbia/Legacy 88875124402-(SV)7 with the US promo single white labels with red text. It has a particularly silly error on the labels - the producer is shown as Tom Wilson instead of Bob Johnston! |

Standard Edition 2CD Releases
"The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 - Bob Dylan 1965-1966 The Best Of The Cutting Edge" - 2CD sets, Columbia/Legacy 88875124422 (USA); Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88875124422 (Europe/Australia/Brazil), 6 Nov 2015; Sony Music SICP 30597-98 (Japan), 18 Nov 2015:
This was released in North America, Europe, Australia and Brazil (standard CD format) and Japan (in Blu-spec CD2 format). It comes in a slimline 2CD jewel case in a card slipcase with a booklet. The reverse of the rear insert shows the front of a 1966 CBS mono compilation, Number One American Hit Parade, released in France and Israel. This album has an edited version of Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 (R-0051M) from Blonde On Blonde, plus Tombstone Blues, Like A Rolling Stone and Highway 61 Revisited from Highway 61 Revisited. For full details, see 1966.
Purchase of the 2CD set also includes a link for a digital download in various formats.
There are stickers over the barcodes of the US, European and Australian releases.
Columbia/Legacy 88875124422 (USA):
Columbia/Legacy 88875124422 (USA) - front of slipcase with sticker, scan by Gerd Rundel |
There are some differences between the US 2CD set and the European 2CD set: there are no Sony Music logos on the rear of the slipcase or the rear insert; the reverse of the rear insert has the catalogue number at bottom right, missing from the European release as shown; both CDs have US copyright text at the bottom (compare with the European CDs). The rear of the slipcase has a barcode sticker numbered “88875124422”. When the sticker is removed the originally printed barcode on the slipcase can be seen to have been incorrectly numbered “8887512442” (missing second "2"). |
